Donwell Chippy in Sunderland

Usually have no issues. Food is lovely so 5 stars for that. Twice in 2 weeks an item has been missing. Then it’s another half an hour wait for it to be delivered. Heard them in the background saying it’s over there. Not even an apology.

really happy you can now select which curry sauce you want. we like both, but it's good you can pick between the curry or the chip shop curry. our food was fab as always. fish gorgeous and a very good size for small.

The fish was hot, chip butty cold & kebab & chicken meat lukewarm. Food was tasty but threw out the chip butty as it was cold.

Great Place to get your chippy, JUST down my road and really local. Staff are great and I go here once in a while if I fancy a chippy. I walk down the road, enter, wait for the chippy and boom! A great chippy to enjoy! The only bad thing I got to say is it is really cramped! Really small place to wait and there are no seats inside so you can’t eat in but otherwise they do Christmas decorations, Halloween decorations and a lot more and I just really like this place, five stars given

Favourite chippy always hot and quick, wouldn’t buy from anywhere else

Ordered a doner kebab got a huge bag of chips and and a huge bag of kabab meat. Not exactly a doner kebab. Would prefer quality over quantity. Ideal if you needed to feed a big family on a small budget

Orderd food and jt took an hour and a half to come which was an absolute joke get it sorted please cos that made me very very angry . But ur food is nice so I’ll come again js not waiting an hour and a half again poor stomach was rumbling

food was delicious and huge portions as always. collected my order and it was sooo busy the staff were all over the place and customers were complaining, so I just wanted to let the staff know they are doing an amazing job. Thanks for the food 😁

Chilli awful "salsa with curry powder" Pizza tasteless Chips half cooked

Really tasty, first time we’ve tried a pizza and it was lovely. My daughter loves the kids kebab option, definite value for money

The app said the order was ready to collect and the order hadn’t even been started. There was confusion to the order and items. It took an additional 40 minutes

Kebab meat chip butty was exceptional

Food was delicious , ordered to collected only needed to wait a few minutes. Shop was super busy which I always to believe a good sign. Staff clearly working very hard to get orders done swiftly.

Curry a no no horrible rest of food lovely

I can’t fault the food. The fish was lovely. But. I was running later at arrived for a 20:05 collection at 20:20. I placed the order at 19:40. When I arrived the staff didn’t have anything ready for me and I had to wait another 15 mins for my food. I would still recommend but for quieter days. The staff are also very helpful and friendly even when they are rushed off the feet and stressed.

Use to be lovely, now going back down hill. Making up words and lacing everything in chilli and not putting it on the menu. Health and safety out of the window. Won't be back!

Tried here after a recommendation but due to high delivery charge, stale tasting pitta bread that had holes in it and fell apart, regular onion rather than red onion in the salad (I mean in 20 years I've never come across that :-s) I won't be back. The meat was decent enough in the kebab (and you got plenty) but that's about it. It's a shame as I had high hopes but I'll be going back to my regular takeaway sorry. I will add that the delivery was prompt which was great and I wasn't waiting ages like at other establishments.

1st and last visit here. Ordered for collection but that doesn’t mean anything because you have to stand in the queue and wait whilst the other 15 people in front get served. Got to the front after waiting 40mins (when I was told it would be ready to collect in 20mins now 1 hour ago). Then I was told my order had been sent out to someone else by delivery by mistake but the “delivery driver had noticed it was the wrong order and was bringing it back so it would be here soon.” Then I heard someone who worked there say that customer had been on the phone saying they’d got the wrong order which was my order. So delivery driver hadn’t noticed and it had been in some random persons house who’d opened it and they were going to give me it still. I walked out in the end. Do not trust this place and would never eat from here.

Apart from spoiling my mixed wrap by not putting the garlic sauce separate the food was nice.

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time, my first time ordering from here won't be going anywhere else from now on shame they don't have a ten star option quality and quantity of food is unmatched definitely recommend.

My food is late it has not turned up it is past the delivery time and it says on the app that it has been delivered but it hasn’t, not happy at all I want a refund!

First time ordering from here and it was amazing! We ordered the chicken tikka , donner kebab and chips for £10.50 . Well worth the money it was rammed packed and tasted Devine . Full tray of kebab meat and a load of chicken tikka on top then the chips were wrapped separate. Fed 4 of us and leftovers for tomorrow. Best kebab we’ve had 10/10 . Think this will be a weekly occurrence now :)

What can I say if your over 40 you remember the o my chip shop in Washington worth going to was the village when the Chinese guy owned it. This place is know the only chip shop in Washington worth giving your money to 10/10 prices are great lunch time special for under £5 with a drink or you can go to bells and spend £12 for the same thing and not as nice

Fish has went rapidly down hill lately for some reason.

Haddock was bone dry just left it won’t buy again you are the only fish shop I purchase from very dissapointed

So early in fact I missed the door I went off 19:25 / 19:45, I was in back garden and made sure my son was their from 19:20. I also didn't here my phone as it was in the house lol, u can't make this up lol as uve been after one since my sister got them for part of ma dads 75th birthday party stuff so been looking forward to it for a while lol.

What an absolutely lovely local chippy, visiting from down south and we were greeted by the lovely staff and advised on some different foods we don't usually have back home , Food was large portions at reasonable prices , the fish (haddock) was cooked to perfection and the curry sauce was lovely too. If you're in this area it's well worth a try.

I ordered food tonight it arrived again with food missing I will never go back to this place again this is the fourth time the girl on the phone taking the orders ask me twice I repeated it back twice pitter bread and chips missing 23 pound order I spend a lot here every week never again

fantastic as always, only thing I'm not keen on is the curry sauce which is slightly spicy (partner loves it though) and not chip shop, but never had bad food from here

Food never showed up, women at the end of the line had no clue on what to do other than tell me that we will have to wait for the driver to come back, apparently no manager in to sort something out absolute shocking service normally spot on. I’d highly recommend some customer service training in hole to handle situations instead of being like er I don’t know

Shocking customer service, waited an hour and half food never arrived was told had to wait for the delivery driver to return to the shop and was expected to wait for a call back to let me know what happened so at this point looking at 2 hours to wait for food, manager wasn’t present apparently something had come up and they are the only person at the shop to deal with customer complaints. Beyond a joke customer service needs to be looked at highly recommend some training instead of having someone just saying ‘er I don’t know I’m sorry’

First time mixed kebab absolutely amazing !!

Chips dry, half of burger black ( burnt ) got 6 chop suey rolls they were all wrapped together 5 were soggy and the other one so crispy hard had to take batter off as would of cut my gum. The only thing that was nice was the half sausage and the peas. Very dissapointed

Shocking! I walked out in the end and gave elsewhere our business. Called in on Sunday afternoon with my two children, stood there waiting for ages and no one took any notice. Everyone else was then spoken to and served. I was up visiting family and it was as if you knew I was wasn’t from donwell and completely blanked me in every way! Never experienced anything like it.

Not as nice as it used to be!! Garlic Bread wasn’t cooked, chips all bruised & fish certainly doesn’t smell fresh. Don’t think we’ll be ordering from there again as it’s not worth the money!! The delivery driver is a lovely/friendly man though.

Donwell chippy is always good, but tonight we discovered why you pick up your fish and chips. Overcooked, tasteless fish, lukewarm chips. A shame, next time we’ll pick up.

One of the worst experiences I’ve had here first time trying this place tonight got treated absolutely disgusting waited 45 minutes for one item the staff is rude just had pure attitude and no customer service they didn’t even apologize or anything a wont be back as it’s terrible I will be putting this over social media!!! I ordered one fish pate we waited 45 mins for it and when my mother in law got it home the potato was hard there was one women with black hair saying I ordered a Mince pie not fish pate and there was a young lass with short hair I didn’t even get a apology from the staff about the wait was terrible

No chilli sauce with kebab - chips didn’t taste fresh

Ordered 12” Kiev with a bag of chips and tub of garlic sauce, driver turned up with bag with chips and garlic, went back to the shop to get pizza , came back with same bag but chips weren’t fresh even though the driver said they were , pizza was nice, garlic sauce was nice but watery, chips weren’t nice cos they weren’t fresh, shame cos the 1st time we used them after they took over from the last owner they were fantastic, pizza 9/10 , chips 2/10 and garlic 4/10 , for £16 I can get better, sorry Donwell chippy you’ve just lost me as a customer 👎👎

Food is lovely and the portions are generous. Staff are nice and the place is clean. Definitely one of my regulars. Only downside is, you can order on just eat to collect but when you're told it's ready to collect, it's never ready

Normally decent. Forgot pizza tonight brought it was cold and greasy. Doner meat was awful and salad on wrap was awful.

our food was delivered in about 15 minutes after ordering, brilliant. food was hot and very tasty. fish was delicious. the curry sauce is lush.

30 minutes late. Don't mind it being late but it was stone cold so had been sat somewhere going cold before it was delivered.

First time ordering, and definitely not the last. Absolutely hands down the best chippy tea we have had for a very long time. Thankyou!

Very tasty pizza, deffo will be going back. Big shout out the delivery man that helped me while my other hand was taken up, he kindly shut the door for me so I could just get myself in. Little things in life. If I had change I would have tipped him, always next time.

Our local chippy and the best by far!! We ordered a large amount of food (4 pizzas, a portion of kebab meat, chips and some sauces). Our order was ready to collect within 10 minutes of us placing the order, food was delicious as always! Reasonably priced and amazing value for money, the portion sizes were huge! Fed 5 of us and there was plenty left over for the next day!

Very clean and hygienic place, HUGE portions too. Very friendly staff. Now under new management and their menu has a much larger selection to choose from.

Went on Friday What a disappointment the fish was half the size and the batter was soggy the chips were cold and looked as if they had been reheated at a cost of £15:70 for 2 so called large cod and 1 lot of chips felt so let down as normally they are lovely but I have been informed that they have been taken over so if that is the quality you are going to dish out I will not be returning and will be using the one in the Village which is still owned by the previous owner

2hrs for delivery and arrived cold we had to reheat it. Won’t be getting food delivered again.

First time I have had a paremesan from anywhere and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will certainly be ordering one again. Everything else on our order was very nice.

Although we have been into the shop and bought food, this is the first time we have ordered via Just Eat and had the food delivered. We were very happy. The food we had was lovely. We will certainly be ordering again.
