Pretty disappointing dinner here. Came and ordered two steak baguettes, each costing almost £20. They came covered in a caremelised onion chutney and so much melted cheese and yet, were still so bland. Bad bread, bad steak, bad cheese. It came with a watery chimichurri sauce for dipping, which didn't really feel thought through with the rest of the dish. Won't be back.

Me and my pals all from london/kent came to the ducks inn after we played Gullane. We tried to come last year but because of the open we couldn't get a space it was soo busy. The average golfers great video with the nice owner also wanted me to come more and visit the pub for a drink. We had a great table in the pub and we all had a lovely 3 course meal at a good price. Everyone loved their meals. I had the fish and chips which was fantastic. The fancy dessert I had, the panna cotta with all the fancy extras was exceptional. We had a lovely young waitress with glasses. She was very nice and helpful. This is a fantastic spot and I will come here every single time I come to Scotland. We will be back Thank you

I came here for lunch with my brother after a walk on the beach. We hadn't booked but there was loads of space. We chose to eat in the bar as it looked old (in a cool, traditional way) and comfortable, but I think the menu in the restaurant is the same. The service was amazing and the food really tasty. Both Kirsty and Zsolt (we were so impressed we asked for their names) were friendly and helpful, appearing when we might need them but not more than that! It was a pleasure to meet them. I had the chicken burger and my brother the steak sandwich. We also shared halloumi fries which we didn't need as the portions were substantial! All of it was delicious. We wished we'd saved room for cake or pudding. We will definitely be returning as soon as we can. Thank you for a lovely experience. (oh and the toilets are nice and clean!)

Booked a meal in the restaurant for last night My husband and I each had three courses We weren't disappointed with any of them. The food was exquisite and beautifully presented. The staff were very good at looking after us without being over the top. My main course of sea bass was realy delicious and husband's rump steak the same. Would definately recommend this restaurant especially for a special occasion.

Whilst on a trip for a friends 30th I looked into booking an EXTREMELY last minute dinner for 14 people. Ducks Inn were kind enough to squeeze this booking in and were fantastic on the phone. They were super helpful and accommodating of such a large group, going to the effort of emailing me their menu and allowing us to pre-order to aid in the kitchen prep. They also took my number just in case we would run late or need to be in touch (again understanding the challenges of organising a large group). When we arrived they sat us in their dining area and we had very attentive wait staff, who took our drinks orders and poured us all fresh water as well. We had a variety of different meals throughout the group, with a few portions of the mussels, battered haddock, steak sandwiches, one of the veggie salads and beef/chicken burgers. The portion sizes were huge! (Particularly the mussels). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal and drinks, and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back in future!

My wife and I have just spent two and a half weeks in various parts of Scotland and Ducks Inn absolutely stands out for the quality - and value for money - of the dinner we had. The bar/restaurant has a really friendly vibe to it and is clearly popular with locals (always a good sign). My wife's vegetarian and had roasted pumpkin ravioli with parmesan cream to start followed by puy lentil and vegetable ratatouille, both of which she really enjoyed. I had hot smoked salmon with a glorious gin foam followed by seabass with celeriac puree and creamed potato. Both were really delicious. Fairly full, we managed to share a very generous selection of cheeses (apparently supplied by Haddington's 'cheese lady'). The wine list is excellent and the service was attentive and friendly without ever being too much. And, given the price inflation we're seeing at the moment, I was struck by how fairly priced everything is. Thoroughly recommended dinner venue for anyone in East Lothian (or, indeed, Edinburgh as Aberlady is only a short drive outside the city - and a lovely spot to walk around if you've not been).

I visited with a friend on 9 September 2022. At the time of reservation, I confirmed on my booking that I was a wheelchair user. On arrival I was able to access the premises without any difficulty BUT when I needed to use the toilet, I was told that I could use the ladies!! To be clear, the only advantage the ladies have over the gents is that you can get through the door in a wheelchair for privacy to empty a catheter bag into a bottle but nothing else. There is no space to turn your wheelchair or indeed access one of the toilet cubicles. In raising my complaint with the owner Malcolm Duck, his response was...and I quote...."We have a number of wheelchair users who come here. The ladies toilets are wheelchair accessible, that is demonstrated on a fairly regular basis. They are not, and we do not describe them as, disabled. That would create a different expectation......"If you asked about disabled toilets you should not simply have been told we don't have them, you should have been told we have wheelchair accessible ones. I am sorry if this caused concern." Doesn't this explanation give a whole new meaning to the working understanding of wheelchair accessible?! And why offer ramped access to a bar/restaurant that does not have the prerequisite toilet facilities available?

Very disappointed with the restaurant. Service wasn’t great either. Website says they have double rosette and “fine dining” so we were expecting a great dining experience. Staff inexperienced, don’t know how to hold the wine glasses/drinks when serving, it was almost like throwing stuff on your table and a quick dash to leave, even dropping cutlery. We were told in the beginning that there’s no mussels available, which was fine. I ordered the garlic and chilli prawn to start and had to devein a couple of the prawns. It was drowning in oil and serve stupidly in a miniature pan which was awkward to eat. Because they had no mussels so I ordered the linguine omitting the chorizo. Food again was swimming in oil and to pay £18.95 for tiny portion of linguine, I’d expect something. Except, presentation was non existent, had to devein a prawn again myself, and didn’t really enjoy the food. All I can’t taste was the oils and spring onions. And not once we were asked how was the food. My partner on the other had enjoyed his Gnocchi. But everything was just a let down and it’s a shame, as I’ve always wanted to eat here every time we drive past Aberlady.

I have no links to previous review and I ignored it prior to my stay. If a member of management was available I would have stated to them my opinion. This hotel probably okay if you are on a lads golf trip. Ground floor and bar area was pleasant however stair carpet leading to bedrooms manky and I was there on a during dry weather so hadnt seen shampoo in a while.. I booked a dog friendly room and again carpet unclean. My dog was cleaner. I made mistake of using bathroom with no shoes on. Came out with used plaster which had come from previous guest.Room 5! Toilet seat lid stuck and shower head rail u/s. Decor dated and whoever had been recently in the loft hatch had left their dirty fingermarks on the hatch. We had a drink in the bar which was fine however bar stayed open till 1am and the noise was so bad from drunk male golf guests that I had to ask the barman at 1230pm if he could close the door to courtyard so that we could get to sleep. He listened to my complaint however I think the noise was excessive for a Monday evening in a quiet village.BTW I like a party but couldn,t tolerate the noise any longer. We only ate breakfast in the hotel and it was passable however my wifes poached eggs were hard and the staff should watch their chat in the kitchen. We could all here the swearing and the chat over who was going for a cigarette while the other did the tea and coffee!

Came here for lunch and sat outside, lovely seating area in perfect spot for catching the sun. We ordered food, I got an eggs Benedict which was alright but the eggs were hard. I wouldn’t come back here again purely because of the single use plastic. The food arrived in cardboard boxes and plastic cutlery wrapped up in a plastic bag. There is no bonus to this method, the company are wasting money whilst contributing to the current climate crises. Change to reusable normal plates and cutlery and you’ll be saving money whilst saving the planet:)

Firstly we were disappointed by the menu as the menus that were being used were not the ones advertised on the website and they were extremely limited. We ordered our meals and everything was brought out apart from one of the main meals. Eventually we asked a young waiter where it was and he said he would go and check he didn’t come back to tell us how long it would be or apologise for the delay. The meal was brought out once the rest of the party had finished, again no apology. We then ordered deserts for the 5 children, we ordered 4 brownies and 1 ice cream. The waiter brought themout but brought two ice creams we explained that we had only ordered one ice cream. Next thing the waitress came out and questioned us about our order it was as if she was trying to argue that we had ordered it when it was her who had made the mistake. It took us several attempts to explain what we had ordered for her to eventually admit she must have misunderstood when taking the order. The food was bog standard and to have had such rude service made the whole experience extremely disappointing. It is safe to say we would not return!

Having heard about the Inn through a popular golf travel series we already had high expectations and Malcom and his staff exceeded them. The Inn was warm, comfy, hospitable and the ideal place to relax after a days golf. Bar staff were friendly and helpful, as were Malcolm and his Wife but accompanied with a sharp wit that keeps you on your toes. You really get the feeling that they care about their guests and that many end up coming back as a result, I know that I will. If I had a criticism, the shower was not the best, a small detail but one that I always look for in a hotel and I think by open acknowledgement the dining wasn't quite up to usual standards as a result of COVID restrictions but I would still rate it as a 5 star experience and one of my favourite stays in the UK.

My wife and I stayed in May 2019 for one night, while doing a short 4 day trip for a Wedding. The place had been recommended to me by a colleague and I had also seen it on 2 Golfing Vlogs.Massive Positives:Owners and staff. We had flown very early and also had recently returned from the West Coast of America, so were suffering from jet lag. My wife asked if we could check in early, and we were accommodated immediately. We both went straight to bed and slept well, which left us in a very good mood for the remainder of the stay. When at the Bar the owner was engaging and interesting. Little touches like this by both owners make a huge difference IMO.Food:I had high expectations because my colleague (who recommended the Inn had glowing reviews) and both my wife and I loved our meals. Presentation was lovely and execution equally so. I had the venison and my wife the beef cheek. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and left the restaurant more than satisfied. Pricing and execution equaled excellent value.Breakfast was adequate, but not in the league of the dinner for execution or quality.Bar:this was this highlight (marginally ahead of the food). It is a throwback to how bars used to be and was full of golf paraphernalia, which for a golf nerd like me was amazing. The owner was incredibly kind to walk my wife through a lesson on Scotch whiskeys and we sampled 3 or 4 while playing darts. The bar is old-fashioned and I hope it stays this way, as it adds to the charm of the Inn significantly, and the putting games make it very fun too. What to expect:The Inn is an old building and some of the corridors and our room are either old fashioned or a bit tired in places. Saying this they are clean, so no complaints there. The conundrum is if they were all modernized, the Inn could lose some of its charm IMO. The only reason I state this is so anyone who reads these reviews, knows what to expect. I am already planning a trip back with golfing buddies and separately with my father. The town is beautiful and the golfing options are plentiful in the area. If you are looking for somewhere as a base to play golf in the area, have good solid food and a cracking bar, this is your place.

I am impressed with the Ducks Inn having, just the week before, visited a restaurant in Elie who struggled to adapt dishes to meet my cow’s milk-free requirements. The Ducks Inn, however, were so unphased by this and the waiter was really knowledgeable about what was in the dishes and how they could be adapted to be dairy-free. I was able to eat anything, just with some slight alterations. And the alterations did not take away from the flavours at all. The goats cheese starter was sensational, oozing out of its case and mixing with a lovely ratatouille sauce. The fish main of hake and prawns was adapted to include a lovely broth. The cost was a very reasonable £20 considering the high quality of the dishes. We sat outside in the beer garden with our dog enjoying the sunshine and the sights and sounds of the high street of Aberlady. We will definitely be back to the Ducks Inn and will definitely be recommending to all

Having booked the bar for a supper we were guided, without question, through to the restaurant which wasn’t a problem. However moving from the warm, colourful and familiar surroundings of the bar one couldn’t help but feel that you had climbed into the wardrobe ‘Narnia’ style as we entered the stark grey sparse surroundings of the restaurant. This was a total contrast to the last time I visited this establishment, a few years ago, and sadly so was the food experience. The fish and chips and mushy peas were chosen - what could go wrong? The fish was very fresh however it was almost as if the plate had been passed through a flavour removal device as the only thing that had any flavour was the peas. The staff were very efficient; almost too professional - to the point of robotic. All in all an overly pretentious atmosphere, which seems like the panacea for the east coast demographic, but it doesn’t make for a comfortable dining experience and that may be the answer as to why you don’t get the honest feedback from your diners.

But it seems on complaining the owner seemed to say it was our fault for eating a very expensive meal in the bar and not the restuarant where there is tablecloths and everything because the bar is for drinking and should not be poluted with smells of food. I think the owner needs to refresh himself with the licensing laws. The room also require modernising.

We visited this highly recommended restaurant this week and ate in the bar. Though the two chicken dishes ordered were tasty enough the actual portion sizes were very small and quite pricey. The only additional vegetables we could have ordered were green beans and they already came with the dish. Someone in our party also ordered the lobster ravioli. This came as three parcels and was smothered in a mushroom sauce drowning out any flavour of the lobster. It was a starter size really and as others reviewers have commented previously, not at all good value for money. The worst part of our meal were the desserts. Although one was nice enough the sticky toffee pudding was the worst we have ever tasted. It took ages to arrive and when it did it was heavy, lacking in any flavour and completely cold in the middle! Stopped here for lunch after visiting Aberlady reserve and Gullane beach. Excellent and friendly service. We sat outside as it was a lovely day, and we ordered fish and chips & chicken. Both were fab and homemade! Lovely meal in a lovely place! Recommended!

Stayed here for one night when travelling in the area. Very warm and friendly welcome. The room was very spacious and had a four poster bed and lots of light in the room. It was very clean in all areas. We did not eat in the restaurant as it closed on a Monday. We hope to try it another time when passing as the food has great reviews.

Nice pub with some games going on . It seemed to be a men only bar. Expensive drink more so than the Craigielaw lodge hotel which has a captive audience.

Stopped on the Motorbike with the other half for a little nourishment and to get watered. Luckily it was a fantastic day so it was the outside seating in the sun out the front that really invited me to stop. We started with some caffeine, the coffee was spot on with no lack of milk on the side to cool it in the spring sun. We had the Ceasar salad and the smoked salmon sandwich. Bot where presented really attractively and the portions where spot on. Would recomend this place to any passer by looking for a upper mid priced lunch with quality and a lovely setting. Shall certainly be going back on my travels.

Visited with my husband for our 15 year Anniversary & had the tasting menu & overnight stay. Absolutely everything, from the warm & genuine welcome, to the incredible food - every morsel cooked with love, to the fantastically friendly staff, comfortable room & beautiful breakfast was just perfect. It's a joy to visit a family run business where the family really care about giving the best service - and do! We can't wait to go back! Thank you so much to the team again. I've uploaded the photos of our food, but it tasted even better than that! I have a shellfish allergy, which the chef didn't know about until I arrived, but it was absolutely no problem to offer me alternatives (which were by no means second best!) Foie Gras for example!

After a walk along the beach we were ready for some food. We had always wanted to visit the Ducks Inn and were not disappointed. The staff were very welcoming especially the owners daughter who spent some time chatting to us. We also met Malcolm the owner who welcomed us very warmly. The menu was good. I had fish and chips which was very fresh and the tartare sauce was so delicious. My husband had the steak sandwich which was well cooked. If you like great food and a warm welcome you will not be disappointed. Will definitely return on our next beach visit. Thank you

We had been for a health giving walk along the coast and arrived at Aberlady. Too scruffy to pop in to this handsome looking place? Not a bit of it. The sign states. "Muddy boots and dogs welcome." On January 2 you expect a little disarray. There was organised chaos with a new pan of soup on the stove and the bread still in the oven. Did it matter? Not a bit, as we were gathered in by the warm welcome from Malcolm Duck and his staff. The bar is golf themed, but in a nicely idiosyncratic way. The new bar menu had a bit of something for everyone. To make up for the absence of our first choice, we were offered the last two portions of oxtail tortellini from the a la carte. This dish is a real labour of love - trust me, I've made it. But not nearly as well as chef Michal Mozden. Topped with an anchovy and caper butter, these were sensational. I then went for the stone bass and orange hollandaise sauce. Seriously curious, since fish and orange just don't go together. Well, they did here. Stone bass is firmer than seabass, especially when as well cooked as this was. On the side was a large puddle of orange hollandaise, which was a perfect match. In between, a whopping portion of crushed potatoes. This can be dry, but not when it comes with as much butter as these had. Not for those watching their cholestorol, but perfect after a few blowy miles. I hadn't been here for years (when it was merely very good), but can't wait to go back for a full lunch or dinner. Wonderfully good.

Quick lunch with my parents who were staying there. Lovely food but always annoying to hear another table complaining they weren't getting 'local' priced drinks. May be we should have gone somewhere else for those?

We ate here one evening with a booking at 7.30pm. When we arrived there was one other table occupied, however it took me asking if we could order before anyone came to serve us. The food then took around 40 minutes to arrive. The place is rather like a canteen and we only got cutlery and napkins after we ordered. It is not cheap (£15 for a burger) but the food when it eventually arrived was well cooked and tasty.

Was pleasantly surprised by the recent upgrade to interior and menu at Ducks. Always one of our favourite restaurants in East Lothian, it appears to have moved up a gear with the menu choices also. Wild boar ravioli with mushroom tea starter was lovely! Main courses great too. The 2008 rioja reserva accompaniement was delicious. Hope to be back soon.

I honestly and genuinely don't know what to make of this place. After a coruscating Hootsmon (Scotsman) review of a few years back we'd deliberately avoided eating here. But time moves on, and as it's local to us a bit of experimentation seemed appropriate. We booked for lunch, but the startled chap we introduced ourselves to was the beginning of a strange experience... We were the only diners all lunchtime. Seating ourselves by a window in the (enormous) dining room we felt like extras in a rerun of "Separate Tables". In hindsight we should have sat at one of the tables in the front room - definitely cosier. The dining room shouts 80s Hotel Dining Room, - tired, worn floors, pastel colours, some failed light bulbs... Does anybody care, or, as I suspect, is this place heading inexorably towards its next makeover/takeover in search of a profit? And yet, and yet... The service from the professional and cheerful waiter was perfect; the gaps between the courses spot-on; the food ( battered fish & chips and roast lamb, vanilla rice pudding) absolutely couldn't be bettered. However, including tip (well-deserved), the bill (without alcohol) came to £76. For that money I'd expect pretty good mid-range/sub fine-dining in a city centre establishment. Sadly the down-at heel Kilspindie just doesn't cut it, and it may be that the well-off golfing fraternity are spending their hard-earned at Greywalls down the road.

Went twice a couple of days apart. We had the fish n chips and the burger chips and the second visit we ordered the same but swapped meals. The burger was outstanding, large and juicy and incredibly tasty. The fish was perhaps the best we've ever had. The chips, more like roast tatties, large crispy on the outside and fluffy n soft on the inside.Celeriac Soup and Fennel soup truly delicious. The service was outstanding and each day had totally different staff as well.We had our wee dog with us and she got the 5* trestment on both days.

My buddy and I stayed 2 nights to enjoy golf in the surrounding area. Malcom and Fiona are excellent inn-keepers and the hotel is warm and inviting. The rooms are continuing to be updated but are clean and very functional. The food was very good so I am not very sure about the other reviews. Everything we had was delicious. I would recommend staying here for the fun and convenience.

My wife and I stayed the night in the hotel and had dinner in Donald's. The food was excellent (we had starters and mains but were too full for dessert). Considering the high quality of the food, the dishes were also very reasonably priced. In short, we would definitely go back to eat here again without hesitation.

We coupled a meal here with an overnight stay as this is a Restaurant with rooms. This meant that we could enjoy a drink with the meal without worrying about driving home immediately. The only disappointing part of the meal was that we were the only diner's in the Bistro, a February mid-week, but we did get very attentive service! The food was excellent, from the starters (Smoked Salmon and Mushrooms on Toast) through to the Main Courses of Shellfish Linguine and Liver and Bacon. Each plate was well presented and full of flavour. The Sticky toffee pudding was excellent and while the Chees Board was very good, the only issue with the meal was the £12 charge for the trio of cheeses, which was on the high side.We chose a Pinotage from the extensive wine list and were not disappointed. The waiter was very friendly and professional, like the other staff in the House.Overall an excellent meal and one that we would like to repeat again.

Went here for lunch just before Christmas and was very disappointed. We read the previous review and were slightly concerned about the limited choice available so we rang to check a few days before our visit. We were told that the full bistro menu was available, as well as the fixed price lunch menu. This turned out to be misleading because when we arrived there was only the lunch menu (3 uninspiring choices for each course), plus three other "specials" on offer. We did manage to find something from what was available, but were generally unimpressed with what arrived. Portions were very small (the sea bass consisted of one very small fillet, a couple of small slices of beetroot, some leaves and a small potion of fondant potato), and the food was average at best. Maybe the kitchen was focusing on preparing for Christmas Day and other festive events, but this experience would not encourage me to return. I am surprised by some of the high ratings, but perhaps they try harder when they are offering the full bistro menu. Being mislead over what would be available was also annoying.

I had high hope for this restaurant considering all the reviews and the menu online looked promising. We had booked in advance but when we arrived we were told that there was only a limited menu due to it being close to Christmas. We were disappointed that we hadn't been advised of this prior to arrival. The food was nice although the portions very small. They only had 3 choices for dessert but the one we wanted wasn't available. We went with high hopes but were left unfortunately underwhelmed. The service and staff were friendly just a shame about the limited choice.

Popped in here for a quick bite recently. Very welcoming young man served us - liked his sense of humour and this made us feel at ease straight away. There is a really nice feel to this place - we had a drink in the bar whilst deciding on the menu. Both had burgers (i feel a theme starting in my reviews……) which were served with pulled duck! Awesome. There was little atmosphere to the place but we were there in between lunch and dinner so that's to be expected. Decor could probably do with upgrading but was there for the food, so not too important for me. Very clean and presentable tho. Would definitely return.

I'm going to be in the vast minority with this review.I was disappointed ...... city pricing, out-dated décor, average presentation of food and too many trainee staff.Maybe we were unlucky with the night we chose (a Saturday night though) or we chose our main courses poorly ...... Pasta (with chicken) and the Seafood Chowder. The Chowder certainly had quantity challenges when priced at £16.95 and it really wasn't very inspiring. Our main waiter was excellent, very attentive and mortified that we were not entirely happy with our meals. I'd probably still give it a second chance sometime as clearly a lot of people really rate it. I'll see.

Despite a hiccup, on our part, with the online booking. Our party of seven were accommodated without any problem. Each course was beautifully presented and the taste matched too. The owner came to check all was OK and was very attentive. Our group contained some elderly relatives and any special request was dealt with easily. It was slightly pricey especially the sweets but you can get over that when they are so delicious and it was a special occasion. We will definitely be going back.
