Turned up for a pre booked lunch with our friends, immediately after they were married in Newbury. Restaurant was closed. They had not bothered to notify us and 6 weeks later there is still no apology! Absolutely disgusting way to behave. Don’t deserve to be in business.

Very let down by this venue. It was booked for bank holiday Monday for a special birthday. We called to check they were open, got a call back to confirm they were and our reservation was taken. A couple of days before the weekend we got a call from them to cancel. Very difficult to book elsewhere at this late stage. It feels like they are complacent and do not feel the need to try and give good service to customers or potential customers. It has put us off ever going there. A very bad first impression.

The setting is everything here! Its a shame that the food, décor and ambience don't match the 5 star setting. The outdoor area is simply a mess. The jetty is falling apart, the wooden planters that are crumbling were all full of weeds and the outside had the feel of a restaurant lacking money or energy to keep the place looking smart and cared for. Yes these things do matter! The furniture looked tired and the cushions for the chairs looked like they had the stuffing knocked out of them! However we did not let this put us off what was an enjoyable experience. The mozzarella/basil/Tom salad was average and lacking in presentation. The main course was good however and deserts were ok. In the end we focused on the amazing location, enjoyed our wine and voiced our frustration to each other of what the restaurant had been years ago when it was the Leatherne Bottel. Whilst we were having lunch a famous businessman arrived for lunch and he voiced his approval for the lunch just had but quickly told the staff that his dinner at the same restaurant on the Saturday previously was "crap". I would therefore concur that the food is somewhat hit and miss. However in these times I know how hard it must be to deliver excellence when the hospitality industry has taken a battering since covid. Its not an easy place to get too so I can only imagine how hard it is to recruit and retain staff as well in this area of outstanding beauty. I hope they make it work! A day spent sorting out the outside environment and a focus on more consistency with he food then they should have a winner on their hands!

Lovely setting, had a lovely wine, tuna carpaccio was nice, but all the other food was disappointing - inauthentic, poor value and oversalted I'm afraid. Cream does not belong in authentic Italian carbonara!

A real mixture of experiences for us. We arrived by boat and moored alongside the restaurant. The setting is beautiful and a great place to see the sunset and has some lovely tables at the waters edge. However the mooring area is very untidy with broken planks and in part is unusable and there are weeds and other debris floating around. As regards the food the starters were excellent and the complimentary bruschetta very tasty . Drinks are reasonably priced as well. The service was excellent .Unfortunately my spaghetti with bacon was not worth £22 , there was hardly any bacon so really just a bowl of pasta , and my wife's lasagne was just sheets of pasta with no meat filling, at £19.50 was very disappointing. The cocktails were excellent and the puddings reasonable. So overall a mixed experience , which is why I have only given it an average rating.

Apart from the Asian bar tender who was so rude to us regarding the mooring of our boat the rest of the staff were brilliant. Starters were fine. Main courses were decidedly indifferent. Not sure we will return . Been here many times in the past but definitely not as good as it was.

We have just come back from a wonderful lunch. We arrived at 1pm with our friends, and sat talking till 3.30, long after they had closed. Lunch menu is limited but excellent value at £23.50 for starter, main and coffee, with some superb desserts for an extra £6, and a complementary Bruschetta appetiser thrown in. Staff were brilliant, and the location is unbeatable. You sit by the Thames, watching the boats and geese go by, looking out over the valley to the Wessex Downs. Come back in the evening and you will see some of the finest sunsets in the UK.

The welcome and service were very good. The staff were genuinely charming and attentive. It was spotlessly clean and tidy. The food was also very good. We had the sea bass and a fillet steak aux poivres. But we were the only diners there. Perhaps because it is the end of the season, and/or it being an out of the way place. An empty restaurant is sometimes a little off putting, through no fault of the restaurant. The food presentation appears to be in something of a time warp and could be brought up to date. Apart from this "minor" point all was fine and enjoyable.

Unfortunately, we have had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. A group of our family have got together for my mum's birthday, and have all traveled quite far to have a lovely meal with my mum at a seemingly high-end restaurant. My stepdad had chosen this restaurant with thought to make the day special. I am vegan. My stepdad had called in advance to ask if the restaurant can cater to a vegan diet, and they said yes. My mother and grandmother are both vegetarian, but lean more towards a vegan diet if the venue caters to it, which the manager assured us in advance they did. So they both chose the vegan option in this instance. I would like to note that the rest of the party are full meat eaters. When we arrived, we were assured that the chefs have prepared something vegan that we are sure to enjoy, but it was secretive as to what it was. Now, this is a high-end Italian restaurant with beautiful seafoods and meats, and not with a cheap price tag. I would like to note in advance, I am not a fussy eater whatsoever, and understand that if I am to go out for a meal with my omnivore family, I will sometimes have to accept a more basic meal that chefs have kindly put together for me for my requirements. I would never contend this, and do fully understand that sometimes my options will be limited. On this instance however, I feel like my dietary choices were used against me as a personal insult. We were each served a plate of frozen vegetables, boiled with no seasoning, straight from a freezer bag. Our other plate we were each served was straight from the freezer as well, consisting of two frozen vegan chorizo sausages, three frozen fishless fingers, and a chicken kiev filled with dairy cheese. All atop a bed of sad, limp lettuce. Now, imagine those were all standard meat products, and try imagining that as your "surprise constructed meal" at a restaurant that charges no less than £20 for a plate. I asked for the manager, who showed me all the freezer packaging and confirmed in fact yes it is dairy cheese. He was not concerned or sorry at all. Luckily for me, my diet is only a preference and not an allergy. Be warned if you have allergies, these guys have zero concern. The manager was totally dismissive. I am sure plenty of closed-minded people will read my review and think I am the problem for being vegan. Honestly, if a very expensive Italian restaurant cannot imagine the very basics of: - Basil, pine nut and olive oil pasta - Avocado salad - Creamy mushroom pasta (with coconut milk or dairy-free cream) - Spinach ravioli - Pizza with no cheese and a couple of veggies Then I am slightly embarrassed that the restaurant is able to put a £14 pice tag on a dish consisting of nothing more than four prawns cooked in butter. The manager was condescending and had no intention of apologising or learning from mistakes. He said he can have a free drink on our next visit - as if he expects us to visit again. This was my mum's birthday dinner. As I have mentioned, I am not a fussy eater. But the food we were served was insulting and frankly embarrassing for a group of people who call themselves Italian chefs. I cook more exquisite Italian food at home with my discounted Lidl ingredients and 3 minutes of searching on Google recipes. Again, if you are a meat eater and think a plate of two chorizo sausages, three fish fingers and a chicken kiev served on wet lettuce is your idea of fine dining, please, buy a cook book and use your imagination. I am really not the pretentious vegan character that some reading this may think. I'm easy-going and relaxed about food. Wet broccoli and a sad fishless finger just wasn't in my mind for my fine-dining Italian meal which the manager had confirmed a week in advance could cater to a different diet. All together, we still spent £170 a couple of drinks, and a couple of mediocre meat-based pasta dishes. Who knows what it would have cost if they wanted us to pay for the "authentic" Italian Tesco freezer items too. Happy birthday, mum.

When I first called up to book the table they got the day wrong.. once corrected I specifically requested a riverside table. They called me back to confirm Saturday morning and I asked about the riverside table which they said only 6pm bookings get first pick… I wasn’t impressed. We arrived at 7.15 and there was a table available on the river front which they reluctantly let us sit at! Felt unwelcome. Took 45mins to order food… by the time starters arrived it was dark and I had to use my Iphone to see the food😂. No candles or laps provided!! The then brought over what looked like a bike light to the table..which revealed the huge spiders on the table 🤯. We asked to move the the patio took our drinks and the waiter said he would bring the rest.. 20mins later the “rest” arrived as they thought we had left !? … finally our mains arrived and they where not worth the money. Starters where nice Mains - bland and plain Didn’t have pudding as had, had enough by then! View for sun set was stunning though

The setting on the bank of The Thames is magical and as always the staff were very welcoming and made the whole experience a dinner to remember. I started with the Antipasto di Mare whilst my wife had the Gamberoni alla Griglia and both were excellent. For our main course, I had Lasagna and it was delicious. My wife had the calves liver with sage, another hit. The meal was accompanied with a great bottle of Nero D’avola. We will be returning again. There is a new chef for this Summer and the food has moved to a higher level.

What a fantastic restaurant in the best possible location on the Thames. The food was perfect and the staff were exceptional. We came by boat and moored up outside. We arrived late on Sunday (closes 3pm) but we’re happy for us to take our time. They also welcomed our dog. This is truly a perfect restaurant whatever the weather as the inside is lovely and still offers views of the river. The outside area is also covered if necessary. The location is stunning but the food quality is really, really terrible and overpriced. I think I’ve never eaten that bad in many years. Starter tasteless, carbonara and lasagne not authentic, they looked not fresh and absolutely awful. Plus, the restaurant itself is very bad maintained and filthy. The staff was lovely and friendly but the management should do something about the restaurant considering all the bad reviews!

We had amazing lunch date in this lovely restaurant. As surprise from my boyfriend. Place .. Views is amazing, passing boats and wild birds.. very beautiful. Plenty sitting area outside. Very cosy inside. All the staff was very so friendly and welcoming. Amazing food.. cook to perfection.. couldn’t find any fault. Outstanding! Such nice flavours and juicy meat. I haven’t tasted anything better. Even roasted potatoes was the best I ever tried. Complimentary bruschetta was such delightful surprise. As I had in my mind ohh no bruschetta on menu. And then there you go they delivered it to you and plus some olives! What a surprise! For starters we had raw beef.. not sure what was actually called, and it was the best fillet of beef I ever tried, I wouldn’t ever think that raw beef can taste like that!! Amazing! Grilled Tuna steak and prawns for main was so delicious. So juicy. Had smoked flavour, like cooked on bbq. Not sure how was that done and it was delicious! Tiramisu for pudding was so refreshing and so light.. again the best ever! I love tiramisu! All meal was such flavours and texture celebration in my mouth! I felt like I spend couple hours in Italy. Steak perfectly cooked. Fish well presented and well prepared. (Dishes are coming with a huge amount of green leaves. I loved that!) Desserts are simple and on point. A slice of pre-made happiness. I would definitely recommend. The location of the place with the always moving nature and the boats is amazing. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We have got the friendly welcoming. Haven't been since many years ago when it wasn't an Italian Restaurant. Was keen to try it, but what a let-down. We went for lunch. Starters were fine. Main courses were a different matter. My wife ordered a steak, medium-well done. It was seriously overcooked,...

We had an evening meal here under great recommendations, on arrival the atmosphere & scenery were great! Problems: the service was very poor full wine glass was knocked over by waiter & not cleaned up Had to chase a replacement glass Main meal took an hour & half to come. Food was over priced for quality. Dead plants on the table. Solutions: Better communication with guests of slow service Managing guests expectations Staff training Possibly review prices

Beautiful location. Shame it was let down by slow and arrogant service, until we reminded the waiter that we were customers who were about to pay a hefty bill and hadcevery right to be miffed about the service! By the time they stopped making excuses for poor service and paid us the attention we deserved, the damage had been done. Most of the food we ate was lovely but that just isn't enough to keep people coming back especially when we paid over £60 a head for lunch!

A1 location, food A2. Wonderful, pretty much unparalleled location right on the river- stunning. Not sure the food quite lives up to the location or the prices - competent and decent Italian however not outstanding. Visit once

Really impressed. We booked a table for Saturday lunchtime on the waters edge... it was absolutely beautiful. Within a few moments of turning up we were seated and had the team getting us drinks and just being incredibly attentive. Not long after we ordered our starters and mains. The starter came really quickly and it was delicious. Just wonderfully simple food, well prepared and incredible ingredients - Italian food at its best (in my opinion). The mains and the wine were again amazing and rarely have I had a meal that made me so content but not too full. The price reflected the quality of the food and service and I would definitely recommend Don Giovanni's to friends and family.

Food was really poorly presented and hellish expensive Drinks far too expensive. The whole place is selling itself on it's position and charging for the privilege the manager was surly and seemed bored with having9 to deal with customers!!! The place really does need some...

Friendly, helpful staff. Great setting, though no water safety precautions (railings, life-saving equipment etc) we felt was a BIG oversight as the terrace is literally on the river. Food was perfectly cooked and well presented, if not a little over priced.

Although the setting is beautiful .. my spaghetti was dry and my husbands gluten free pasta (obviously shop bought) was cold and mushy. Of course he sent it back . My side salad that I ordered to come with my dry pasta came late with no dressing. The salad was dry and lifeless. When we told the waiter we were disappointed, he said “well it’s up to you if you want to come again “ !!! I was in shock with this comment !! We will definitely not be returning and I advise that you stay clear to.

Very disappointing. Nice riverside setting. No beers just bottled larger. Asked for gin with only few ice cubes. It arrived full of ice. I sent it back and it came back with ice scooped out. Also served with all tonic poured in rather than served...

Nice location but sadly that's it. They had a busy weekend and were out of alot of vegetables. So, gave them benefit of doubt as these are indifferent times. Main waiter, just seemed like he'd rather not be there. No doubt as its been so busy . Tried to have a laugh and again, benefit of doubt. When I booked, I advised them.i was Coeliac and they said that was no problem. My arrival was seemingly unexpected and no gluten free bread available. For those who can't eat gluten, will know this comes across as almost prejudice. No excuse in this day and age. The gf pasta was cold to warm, and sent back. New one returned, was hot but over cooked. Gf pasta cooking is not difficult but care should be taken. The side salad never arrived with the main course. When reminded, it had zero dressing. Very nicely, I said that sadly there have been a number of disappointments. UNBELIEVABLY the waiter said, " if you don't want to come back, that's up to you" I work in the service industry and I would never dream of saying that. "How can we help to make your experience better" would have been more like it. They don't obviously care about repeat custom for their over priced (for the quality) dishes. Happily for them we will not be returming or would recommend.

I’ve been here a couple of times for lunch, and both times have been fantastic, the service and food is exceptional, top that off with a riverside setting, you’d think you’d been transported to Italy.

There was a George Michael tribute act on that we weren’t made aware of on booking. That also meant a much smaller menu than usual that again we weren’t made aware of beforehand. They tried to cram us on a rubbish outside table then moved us inside but we were the only ones. The singer was on a break when we arrived and the music being played was incredibly loud- we literally had to shout at each other and the waitress couldn’t hear us. Food was ok, staff were lovely but service was rushed, ordered gin and tonics and weren’t given a choice of gin. Had to ask what we had been given. Even knives and forks placed the wrong way round when they finally arrived! Wouldn’t have bothered leaving a review but actually for the price you would expect a lot more!

Disappointed!! - What can i say.. Really disappointed with the food & inconsistent service, i should of looked at the recent reviews before making the mistake of booking - The view and setting is incredibe but almost £50 pp for food i could make better at home is a joke. If this place was in a town center without the views it woild be out if business in no time.... Everything we ordered may as well have either been from a supermarket frozen packet or jar sauce, iceberg lettuce garnished most dishes - hugely overpriced for what was served. £4 for a soda water! Wow PLEASE READ ALL RECENT REVIEWS BEFORE BOOKING!!! I would recommend that you get a picnic the other side of the river and enjoy jist the same

Food was alright. Prices are inflated because of their deals for 25% off every day with certain companies. £18 for lasagna that's just as good as a ready meal... Service was great and the staff were very lovely. It was very loud inside as it was school holidays when we went so probably would visit later in the evening to avoid this.

Just had a fantastic pizza from Patrons Pizza. The crust was amazing - crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside - and the toppings were fresh and delicious. We ordered the Gotham and Smokey Sunset and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be back to try more of their menu!

Superb lunch menu. Delicious food, the house white was perfect with it. The waiting staff were attentive, professional, efficient and charming. The restaurant with its selection of pictures and clever use of mirrors created a fabulous and comfortable environment. We'll be back.
