Had the goulash. The dumpling I am sure was barely cooked. Not nice.

Very friendly pub with alot of locals and dogs. We have been back this week April 22nd 2025 All the staff are so fun,happy and just the best The food is absolutely lovely and the staff can't do enough for.you. It's lovely when you return and the same staff are there as that in itself says how great the pub is A special Thank You to Tom for always smiling and having the quickest sarcasm 🤣

If you're looking for good food and great beer then look no further, we popped in for a bowl of goulash and we weren't disappointed. We had probably the best pint of Old Peculiar we've ever had, if you like or if you've never tried goulash then this is the right place you won't be disappointed. All the staff were polite and friendly and clearly proud of the service they provide. That's why we come back every year. Thank you

Snug, relaxed pub with a good selection of beers and excellent food. A great place to relax after a walk or enjoy lunch or dinner. The goulash is very good as are the other dishes on the menu. I'd recommend the salt and pepper chicken, it's served with a katsu curry sauce and is very tasty. Quick service even when busy which is most of the time! Definitely worth a visit.

Fantastic pub, we visit every time we come to Keswick. Friendly staff, lovely food and atmosphere. We will always recommend a visit to our friends and family. Special thanks to staff Sophie, it was very busy this weekend both inside and out. Sophie was incredibly friendly, spent time chatting to us and other customers and was warm and friendly. Busy wee pub , we were lucky to get a table but were well looked after by the staff....had the famous Goulash washed down with some fine local ales

Never miss the Dog and Gun for their famous goulash. A member of staff called Ru went above and beyond to make our visit perfect. I wish all pub staff would do this. Enjoyed an evening with 3 friends having decent food & good beer .Bar service above par with bar staff, notably Ru keeping us on our toes... working hard to keep up with the excellent repartee. We left having had a good time certainly having been "Ru(de)" in the nicest possible way. Cheers D & G.

Best pub in Keswick. We’ve been coming to Keswick for years and always come back to the Dog and Gun. This week we have been served by Ru. She’s a superstar. Always up for a laugh and really makes us welcome.

Enjoyed a cracking pub visit with decent service, lovely staff, and a top notch pint of Wainwrights. One constructive note: the vegetarian Hungarian goulash could be more substantial. Traditional goulash features hearty portions of meat and dumplings, but the vegetarian version lacked adequate substitutes. Using vegan dumplings, which are straightforward and cost-effective to make, would enhance the dish’s heartiness. Given that meat is typically the most expensive ingredient, adding plant-based alternatives should be feasible without significant cost. My vegetarian version looked like a lot less food than my friend’s meat version and appeared to be less value for money. The sauce in my vegetarian one was a lot more watery than my friends too.

Menu was the best around and the food looked really nice but as they don't reserve tables there were singular people taking up family tables and there was no room more often than not. Quite a few families came and went as there was no tables suitable. Shame but will try again no doubt

We called in for an early evening meal to celebrate my wife's birthday. We chose the beef and ale pie , good size pie and nice pastry however the beef inside the pie was a bit fatty and chewy not very nice. The prices are not too bad comparable with other pubs in the area. The pub itself has plenty of character and good service from friendly staff. I don't think I'll be having a meal there again but would call in for a couple of drinks. Good pub with plenty of choice just a shame about the pie.

Great pub. A favourite of ours in Keswick. Very welcoming. Staff friendly and always give the dog a fuss. Attentive on food allergy issues which is very reassuring. Ru has taken care of up on our trip to the lakes.

Nice food and drink with a friendly atmosphere.

The kitchen had literally just closed when we arrived, but as we just wanted goulash and could be served quickly, someone made an executive decision to sort us out. We were very pleased as we'd had an active day and the goulash was our reward/treat. Great pub, great food & now we see them as having great staff too. Every time we come up to Keswick we gravitate to the Dog & Gun.. it’s our Lakes local. Tonight we had food which was quick coming out and tasted lovely, good value for money in the Lakes. The staff were super friendly & a special acknowledgement to Jo behind the bar.. Brilliant atmosphere for a rainy Thursday evening in Keswick.

Lovely pub with open fire, quite busy but hardly a wait for food. Dog friendly. Immaculate toilets. Good range of beers and gins. We ate steak and ale pie & meat goulash both delicious and filling

Quaint old fashioned traditional pub in the centre of town. Lovely open fireplace with a blazing fire. Warm and welcoming staff. Excellent range of food and drinks available at reasonable prices. Wheelchair accessible entrance and room to manoeuvre. We had an enjoyable light lunch and coffees. I would have given full marks if there had been an accessible toilet and the hot chocolate drinks which were advertised had been available.

Great choice of real ale. Tried 2 nights to have an evening meal but the pub was full. What a shame. Very popular pub

It’s been one of my favourites for many years - went back yesterday and it’s still as good. Great service, great atmosphere and great Guinness.

Great bar/restaurant food really good, fantastic atmosphere, lots of walkers, relaxing after there day hiking, prices reasonable , lovely coal fire very friendly staff so nice and welcoming, only problem is it's so busy and, you can't always get in , I recommend this 🍻,dog friendly

The food was really nice however the service another member of the public got was awful. She was rude and horrible and it did upset me seeing the man be treated this way. Don't know why she was rude wether it was the gentleman or that he had a polecat,

I've got ptsd and bi polar and how a female member of staff spoke to me in here was very confrontational and ruined my lovely day in keswick,it's just very unprofessional people can clearly see I've got mental health problems,I carry an invisible mental health badge and My animal is an emotional support animal I'm aware I will get a reply passing the blame on to me as I've red other reviews and you have a answer for everything and can never take criticism of any kind this has made me feel very unwell, and stop calling ya self animal friendly when you are clearly just selective breed of dogs friendly and discriminate against other types of animals and when someone like me questions this as racism against certain types of animals you get all abusive, anyway just no need to speak to me in such a unprofessional angry way and if I was a angry person I'd of reacted but I just left,anyway please spare a thought for mental health customers in future and handle us with some compassion and empathy and you will see we are decent people 😊

After a long walk in the mountains, this is a lovely pub to relax in. With an open fire and a friendly atmosphere we felt nice and relaxed. We came back the following day and had their Goulash as we had seen someone have it the night before. It had loads of meat in it and was delicious. I would definitely recommend this pub.

Lovely no frills country pub in middle of Keswick. Very busy at weekend afternoons, food has good reputation.

Excellent pub. I was going to give it 1 star just to keep people away as it gets so busy, but it's no surprise as it's an excellent pub. Would recommend. Also Loweswater Gold is top tier.

A group of 6 of us enjoyed a fabulous evening last night. There is a reason it’s the busiest pub in Keswick, it’s the best. If you can’t get a seat it’s worth the wait! The Old Peculiar beer is a lovely pint and the Goulash was top notch. The pub is famous for its atmosphere, service and Goulash. It most certainly did not disappoint I’m happy to say……. If you are looking for a good local pub with fabulous staff and you are reading this then look no further; you have found paradise! 😎 Oh and they love well behaved dogs 🐕

Great place, the goulash was so great. A little secret my girlfriend is Hungarian who was with me and said it was more of a Porkolt, but she loved it! Service was amazingly friendly and the beer was great too

Always looks warm and cosy everytime we walk past , popped in and wasnt disapponted. Always seems to be busy . Fancied the famous Goulash but no idea how you get a table , its busy all day.

We’ve visited The Dog and Gun several times during our holidays in Keswick, especially over the Christmas period, and it never disappoints! The food is always delicious, with a great selection that never fails to hit the spot. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit even more enjoyable. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day out exploring the beautiful surroundings. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Keswick – definitely a highlight of our trip! Also very dog friendly.

Great Lake District pub with charm and character. Good range of local beers and ales. The goulash is the dish to go for too.

Busy pub. We went here for the open log fire and Guinness but left after one pint. Service was very slow and a little disorganised. Not much in the way of an atmosphere.

Super oldy worldy hostelry, welcoming, smiley and knowledgeable staff. Quaint decor, lovely place to meet and spend evenings with friends and family. A good collection of local and wider range ales, lagers and wine. Go on give it a try, you won’t be disappointed, a must try is the locally produced ‘Woof Bang’ ale.

Cosy warm welcoming pub right in the heart of Keswick. Goulash was absolutely delicious. Dogs welcome.

Lovely pub in the centre of Keswick, with traditional style beams and warm welcoming atmosphere. Within minutes of our arrival at 12 noon, the pub filled up, always a good sign. Staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. Both the bar and food service were efficient. Food was very good, nicely presented and tasted lovely. Good selection of dishes are available from the menu. This pub has a greet selection of local real ales and beers. Dogs are very welcome in this pub, water bowls and treats are available for them. The interior was very cosy and looked nice having just been decorated for the festive season. Everything was immaculate and tidy.

I was recently in the pub after a long day of walking and the beers I had were delicious, so thanks to whomever described the flavours. Also tried the famous goulash and it’s earned the hype it’s got.

Called in for lunch. They do a cracking goulash , but had none today. So had to pick something else from the menu. Everything was frozen so not very inspiring. Very average, but filled a hole.

Staff good, bar quiet small with not much seating inside. Lots of seating outside so no problem. Looks nice after the refurbishment last year.

Ghoulash during Halloween seems appropriate.

Very busy but the staff were really helpful, helping find the right cask ale and the food was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the goulash! If you’re looking for a cozy little place to bring your family and have a delicious meal and a refreshing drink I’d definitely recommend coming here. The Loweswater Gold was as good as ever.

My wife saw a 'reserved' sign on a corner table so I went in to enquire if I could book a table for dinner. The old guy behind the bar advised no bookings taken just come in and find a table. When I said my wife had seen a reserved sign he replied "no she didn't". Even after I pointed out the sign on the table, no apology. Very rude, and stopped us from trying to get a table later.

In my opinion the best pub on the face of the earth. The greatest goulash and beer with a tremendous atmosphere made even better by Ru who has a tremendous personality. Thankyou

We had fish and chips here and it was absolutely amazing also we had the steak and ale pie and was one of the best we have ever had. We were served by Ru. We also enjoy the atmosphere in the Dog and Gun as it’s our third visit this week due to the friendly bar staff (especially Ru)and we enjoy the beer as well.

We had a delicious meal today, there were five of us and two dogs. Goulash, pie, fish n chips and scampi. Very tasty. A special mention to Ru who was friendly, professional and attentive. Thank you
