Nice garden and friendly staff, Sunday lunch looked great too, but they were fully booked

Came here for an evening meal - 5 of us. I thought that £15.95 was steep for fish and chips but I had not reckoned on the portion size! The fish was hanging off both ends of my plate and was absolutely fantastic. The rest of my party thought so too. Great service too

Lovely little country pub that gas a good selection of beers, from your usual lagers and some real Ales. I ordered a Brewers gold ale which was well kept and tasted lovely. Food was ok, the side salad was a bit on the limp side, and the scampi was a tad bland. Maybe some of the other dishes were better.

I had a really tasty burger and chips, the staff were friendly and there was a delightful retro stereo from the early 2000s playing some classic tunes.

The only pub for miles and no other pub needed. Good local ale, lovely garden that is ideal for bird watching and spotting the occasional passing monkjac. I may have pressed the 1 star by mistake, please ignore. It's 5 all day long. The Dog and Pheasant beers went to my head.

Unfriendly and unhelpful. Wanted to grab a very quick bite to eat before a wedding but barmaid said she couldn’t serve me because of other bookings. It was 12.00 and had just opened and wasn’t Sunday brunch. Would have been happy with a take away (the jacket potato or baguette) but wasn’t offered the option. Felt like my custom wasn’t welcome at all.

Just had the best bbq ribs I think I’m ever going to have…. Not sure if anything will top this. Spent a lovely hour and half eating here during our camping trip at Fen Farm. Thoroughly recommend dinner here. Great portions Great value Great company.

We always visit the D&P whilst on holiday. Staff are very welcoming. The food is good and is reasonably priced. This is just, in general, a really nice, friendly place. They also allow dogs and have treats & water bowls. They have a decent size garden to sit & relax in on nice sunny days.

We've been three times with our dog and had a good meal each time. The dog enjoyed the sausage we enjoyed our pub grub.

We came here tonight as a last minute decision and what a find. If your looking for a decent traditional pub meal you've come to the right place. The food was all homemade nothing pre frozen the house red wine was delicious local ales and home cooked food at an Incredibly reasonable price and the service. Well the service was amazing the lady was running the bar and serving and had a guy (Ben I think his name was) on hand running around making sure everyone was comfortable and well fed and watered it was packed. Quiz night. And we booked late and last minute and they both served us smiling! Hard to do in the hospitality industry when your packed to the rafters. I genuinely can't wait to come back. And am relieved finally that somewhere on Mersea has a good menu a specials board and everything cooked to order ! Thank you for making a mid week treat something really special. Ps try the lamb shank you will not be disappointed !!!

Loved the friendly vibe I felt as soon as I walked in & that gorgeous dog Mowgli I met there!! I ordered the veggie burger and my goodness it was the right amount of spicy and juicy crispiness! The best thing was the chips!! Extra crispy and fluffy in the middle!! Love!! Had Xmas dinner here and loved the vibe and ended up meeting new people here & grew a new appreciation for the warmth of this place - deffo recommend!:)

The food here is out of this world, the menu has been thought out beautifully. The staff are extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. Debs always makes a special effort with everyone that steps foot in the pub. Also, doggy friendly! Cannot wait for my next visit, hugely recommend dinner & drinks here.

Food was extra greasy and massively overpriced, one woman staff was very friendly but if you have money to waste then ok but value for money is a definite NO NO.

Frozen Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire pudding on a £16 roast. Very disappointing. We unfortunately, sat in the bar. Full of loud, opinionated, shouty, local middled aged men, where quite literally, no topic was off limits to be shouted about. Truly one of the worst experiences in a ‘restaurant’ I’ve had. Ours ears actually hurt. Would not recommend.

Didn't get to eat here as although nearly empty inside and outside said they were to busy and had to book in advance. This was after they'd served and charged for drinks. Very rude staff.

Honest review from and ex pub manager and 20 years in the catering industry We visited from a nearby holiday site as it seemed like a nice place to lunch , we did read previous reviews about booking a table if you have a dog and that I would recommend as the dog friendly side only has 3 tables in it. A very Sturm lady behind the bar telling us that dogs are only welcome this side which wasn't obvious when entering the pub so maybe address this issue. Menus are written on a board so if you are eating outside you need to take a picture before you go out and decide. No draught anything yesterday as they had issues . Wasn't a great start . We found a spot in the garden to chose our food and then quickly left to find somewhere else to eat as the variety and choice of food was very poor and there wasn't something for everyone plus a bit on the pricey side for us. Shame because this is in an ideal place to be a little gem small changes make a big difference especially for large family's visiting

I love this pub. We get a great welcome from staff who know our names and remember our regular order. Dogs welcome in one bar. Food is excellent. Fish and chips highly recommended.

Popped in Sunday afternoon and was nicely greeted by the landlady, busy but was acknowledged and placed order for Sunday lunch and a pint of ale. The roast dinner was plentiful and well cooked. I was given extra dish of cauliflower cheese to my surprise as well as mint sauce to accompany the lamb. All the staff were extra accommodating and friendly. Nice clean beer garden with plenty of parking.... Well worth a visit and I will definitely go back. Well done Dog and Pheasant team 👏 👍 👌 and thank you

We all ordered meals with chips, which had spent far too long in the deep fat fryer. My chips were browner than my battered cod. At £16 it did not represent very good value for money, didn't look attractive and certainly wasn't anything special

Great dog friendly pub, lovely food, and real welcoming service.

Visited on a Sunday for lunch. The service was initially good, nice welcome when we arrived. But trying to get the attention of a member of staff to ask for a dessert menu, the bill, extra drinks etc was very difficult. We were also sat in the room from which the garden was accessed and as they serve food out there the door was either propped open for long periods or opening and closing regularly. It was a sunny day but breezy so we were in a draft for much of the time. The meal itself was a mixed bag. Nice veg, the cauliflower cheese was amazing, potatoes roasted to perfection. But for £15 each, the meat tasted like it had been purchased pre sliced and the Yorkshire puddings were frozen ones, not home made. Puddings very expensive -£7 for what was clearly from the cash and carry. Filled us up but didn't feel it was value for money. Would be unlikely to return.

We went in a large group for dinner, in the room at the side. We can only say that the service was great, very friendly and efficient, nothing was too much trouble, and the food was superb! Well done to the team, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good food and great service, loved the use of pretty simple tech. And the fact it was sooo close to the campsite we were at was perfect. Would recommend.

We ordered the Pie of the day and Sausage with mash. Both were delicious. The gravy and season veggies are perfect. Separate table area which is dog-friendly. No frills pub with great food. What more would you need after a day running around the island.
