Diwan in Birmingham

I've eaten Indian food in every corner of the world, yet I still rate Diwans as one of my all-time favorites. The staff are very service minded and the owner makes a point of saying hello to every table. The balti is one of the best is Birmingham and I make a point of going to Diwans every time I visit. I'm so surprised by some of the (very few) negative comments here, I ould rate this Balti House very highly.

A dozen of us visited and ordered a variety of dishes, but despite them having different names nearly all of them seemed to taste very similar. This is probably because the same sauce was used. Do piaza? Chuck in some onion, Vindaloo? Bang in the chilli. Jalfrezi? In with the red pepper, etc.etc. Whilst the sauce was pleasant, it was nothing special. I suppose this is the way by which you can have a menu that can advertise scores of "different" curries.

Pros Service was fast The food still tastes good The food came out super quickly Cons They squeeze 6 chairs onto tables only designed for 4 people. The waiter was trying to upsell a lot and was pushy for example trying to put pressure on us to order a curry each for our kids (I stood firm) as we ordered loads of sides and a curry for them to share. We've been going to this place ad hoc for decades and this is the first time it hasn't been a relaxed, non pushy atmosphere. The meat they gave us in the curry was minimal (5 small pieces of chicken. The waiters don't use manners They aren't child friendly

Food was served quite quickly. Shared a chicken jalfrezi balti, starter with two naan and poppadoms. Had a Coke without ice. Nice tasting & good service.

I paid a visit to my favourite balti restaurant, first time in almost 20 years. Happy to say the food is still very nice. But sadly the treatment I received when it came to paying the bill was nothing short of shoddy and humiliating!!! When I offered to pay by debit card, the card machine rejected my card at 1st attempt, normally when this happens myself or the waiter usually tries a 2nd time! By flipping the card over, this usually works!! But no not this waiter/ owner, he instantly inserted my card into the card reader. I due to not using the pin for over a year forgot it! When I offered to pay With cash, he became sarcastic, saying I was 5p short!!! Plus I didn't hear 'thank you' after I'd paid in full So as I only visit Brum once a year I'll have to try another place instead. Its a pity cuz I used to eat here frequently 20 yrs ago!!!!

Went on a recommendation, food was wonderful, staff very polite and attentive, felt well looked after. Baltis were exceptional, naan light fluffy and yummy and the thalis defeated 2 members of our group, there was just so much food!! Wish I lived closer would be there every week.

Me and my family have been visiting for years and ordering take aways... as usual, a great service and amazing food... highly recommend the Diwan

Had a great meal here when staying for the weekend in Moseley. Everything was really well flavoured and we had to try the Birmingham balti's which were superb. You bring your own alcohol which was fine with us. Service was good and prices fair. Would definitely return.

We go here quite regularly as it is my boyfriend’s favourite Indian restaurant to go to. It never disappoints & ends up being a cheaper night as you take your own alcohol!

Went with a part of 20. The staff were not phased and handled a large table well. Food came out in excellent time with excellent taste. Very friendly staff cracking jokes as they passed the table. Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely be back. The lemon dessert was very unusual and a tasty palate cleanser to end the meal

Me and my partner went this evening as it opened.I couldn’t take my coat off was cold staff not that welcoming.We really didn’t enjoy the food all veggie,the so called mint sauce which is a big part for me was awful no mint tasted like cream.We left most of the food wasn’t nice.

Came here with my partner & mum for a meal as we’d heard it was the best balti around so we were so excited to try it Starters were a 10/10 along with the naans perfectly cooked and so fresh, we had chicken Baltis and sadly although they were nice they just wasn’t an authentic balti, we prefer ours in proper balti dishes where it’s been cooked over a flame but this was just a metal dish with a standard balti sauce flavour. Overall the food was nice but if your looking for a curry more authentic unfortunately we did not find that here. Staff were friendly & food was so quick! 🙂

Fantastic food and friendly staff. Some of the best curry I’ve ever had - so good we’re going back tomorrow, but you do need to take your own drinks.

Family celebration. Excellent food in a more traditional setting. Most enjoyable and fair price. A good all round experience.

Wonderful, Excellent, Unbeatable, Tasty food. Have lived in Brum for 52 years. Have tasted every restaurant in the Triangle. Now for 10 years....I go ONLY DIWANS. Lovely helpful staff. So friendly. Reliable delivery. Never disappointed by any aspect of service or quality of food. Exceptional. Partner is vegan, I'm vegetarian. Chana Dahl is personal best ever. Tried nearly everything on menu before being vegetarian. Friends, family converted. Seriously why try elsewhere when you can go to THE BEST!

I had a delivery of tandoori fish and tandoori chicken with Balti lamb main plus a naan. The tandoori fish was large but dry. The chicken was substantial. The curry had lots of big chunks of lamb in a tantalising rich sauce. Enough for two...

Whilst on a family road trip, we stopped in Birmingham just for a curry. This restaurant in every single way did not disappoint - not only was it the most beautiful food ever, but the portions were also extremely generous. The staff were a delight...

No other Indian restaurant comes close to Diwan in Moseley. It's consistently fantastic, quality ingredients, cooked perfectly. The menu is varied and has some great specials and chefs recommendations, along side the "classic" dishes you'd expect.

The food is absolutely disgusting. I've had curries before and this us truly the worst curry ive have ever had.Ratgrr eat gutter water with salt than this pile of muck. If you like your curries stay away from this place. Waste of money

Excellent food whether eaten in or takeaway. We have had takeaway every Saturday since lockdown started and never been disappointed yet. The lamb is as good as it can get, the sauce is wonderful, rice perfectly cooked and naan bread superb. Looking forward to going...

I've eaten their food for years (take away most of the times) and they never disappointed. I've had fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes: I enjoyed all of them, so I do not have any particular recommendation. Reasonable prices. Definitely worth going.

Delicious! I visited with some friends and I had the chicken tikka starter and then the chicken tikka bhuna balti which was amazing. Garlic nan on the side freshly made. I’d definitely come back here! Top Notch.

My family and friends have been dining at Diwan since it opened. We have celebrated many birthdays and occasions here, but often just come for a meal ! We have dined a other balti and Indian restaurants, but nothing comes close to the food here....

Almost 95% of the main courses are described as a balti and as a result you can expect bland and generic food that is way below par - the staff are friendly but do try to rush you - I was being asked to order...

Really tasty balti, good value and been a regular here for many years, both to eat in and as a take away service. I feel its one of the best curry houses around. Never had a bad meal there.

I went for a meal on New Years Eve.. They were able to offer us a table. We were offered poppadums straightaway which came with a watered down mint yoghurt dip. It took ages for the starter to arrive and we started to get impatient. always a bad sign. Then waiter came with incorrect starter and instead of apologising he insisted I had ordered it. By then I was starving so I was going to eat it anyway and another waiter shouted over that the said starter should have been on another table. No apology issued. I waited again for my starter which was a chicken tikka which did not look as it if it had seen a hot flame, a bit anaemic but tasted ok. We had been in the restaurant by then an hour and 15 minutes and got fed up. We paid for out starters and left, as it had taken too long for the mains to come - service was rubbish. Would not go back.

The food here is amazing! Portions are large and very tasty, good value for money. Would return without a doubt and would recommend to anyone. Service could’ve been a bit faster but that’s a minor issue. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Portion was big and I can see why this place is popular. The flavour packs a punch and they put a lot of spices in the food. Personally it's not the best Indian food I have had, the flavours could be quite a bit more refined. Does it have a lot of flavour? Yes. Are they the right balance of flavours to make me want to return? Unfortunately not. When I are the food, I pictured the Chef putting the protein in a pot, throwing in all of the spices in the kitchen and then serving it up. I'm sure that didn't happen but from how it tasted, this seemed to be the case in my opinion. Many seem to love this place but unfortunately I wouldn't return. The food was ok, I've just had better.

Simply, the best Balti in the World. Well, I've travelled the world and had Baltis and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi food everywhere. I must have been to 200 restauarants or more in my time. This is still the best. Their Balti garlic Chilli Bahar is the mist tasty dish Ive ever had. Hot, but it's so tasty that the garlic nor the chilli in any way over-power the taste. And still the best value place I've been to.

I feel a bit of a fraud writing this review - I have been a regular visitor to the Diwan since it opened in 1989, when Khi was a young kid! We were due out with friends and I actually fancied trying the Royal Watan given the rave reviews it’s has received on here! Our friends who have only been to the Diwan twice with us before were insistent that we went there instead! Needless to say, peerless service and food. 8 papadums, two starters, 4 mains, naans and rice £42 - absolutely fab!

Went with a large party, place not too busy apart from our group. Staff were efficient but far from friendly, not a welcome or a smile from any of them. Tables were so close together that once some of our party were seated they could not move without disturbing 3 or 4 people, when I looked around the dining room this could have been avoided with a differing location. Food tasted good but my byriani was very light on the meat and others made similar comments. Will not be returning in a hurry.

Was recommended this restaurant and have now been on a number of occasions a traditional Balti. Each time have had a great meal, very fresh and tasty, large portions and a very reasonable price. Always seems to be busy well worth a visit but note no licence so bring your own alcohol.

Never had a bad meal here. The dishes taste fresh, are hot and very plentiful. Personally recommend the bhindi mushroom vindaloo (not on the menu but a quiet word with the waiter and a cheeky wink it is). Already looking forward to my next visit!

Great curry. Really tasty and perfectly spiced. The large naan was delicious. Freshly made and one was enough for our table of 5!

A group of us came here for curry and drinks and we were seated down on the lower level on a table for six. We were a bit squished together so we asked if they had a bigger table and they very kindly moved us to the higher level.Well.. the food is amazing! What can I say., everything we had was enjoyed, the curries are proper old school and so tasty! The chef that works here is very skilled. I personally had chicken Rogan madras and cheese naan bread. My naan had loads of cheese and it was yummy. There’s no point me recommending a specific dish because we all had different things and all were fantastic so you can’t go wrong.You can bring your own alcohol here.I highly recommend this restaurant and although I live nowhere near it I will be driving over there on a regular basis to get a takeaway.

The food here is unbelievable, they cook it to your liking.The service is amazing we go in a crowd and always looked after, it’s always best to book .Great delicious food,portion size more than enough I would recommend anyone to eat their.

My partner’s family have been coming here for years & its a firm favourite if we ever want a curry! We particularly like that it’s take your own alcohol & they allow us to order 2 curries & have half a portion of each. The naans are amazing & not greasy at all. Bear in mind the medium size is huge! Lovely, lovely curry!

Despite being in easy walking distance from home, i'd never eaten here before.I'd seen mixed reviews, but a friend always states this is his absolute favourite Indian restaurant in Moseley, so i thought i'd give it a go.The menu is varied, and the prices are very good.The restaurant isn't licensed, but as it was a Monday evening, i was happy to just have water with my meal.My starter of the Diwan kebab was excellent, and came with onion salad, which was also nice and fresh.For my main, i had a chicken balti vindaloo, with garlic rice and a keema naan.The vindaloo was gorgeous (very hot and spicy as you'd expect, but rich and sweet in flavour) The rice was nice and fluffy, and the keema naan was one of the best i've had, with lots of juicy meat inside.Service was quick, if a little miserable!....but i left full and happy.Highly recommended.

Hemos vivido en el pueblo de Moseley por un par de años, pero como este lugar se encuentra entre nosotros y Balsall Heath, tienes que hacer un viaje especial, en lugar de paso. Nos hubiera gustado que ese camino antes!La acogida y el ambiente es cálido y acogedor. El menú es extenso y ofrece una amplia gama de platos del sur de Asia - muchos no habíamos visto antes en un menú. Optamos por un Samosa vegetal compartido comenzó seguido de Balti Cordero Saagwala, Jhinga Masala, arroz Pilau Chili y cilantro naan pan. El menú de estados que puede ser que el tamaño preparado Jhinga o caliente caliente, así que solicité y me dijeron que no era posible variar el especias!La comida llegó caliente, picante y bien presentado. Comimos aquí con un grupo de amigos la última noche. Nos llena en nuestra pequeña mesa tan apretado que ninguno de nosotros podría pudimos conseguir el sillas a abandonar la mesa sin una lucha pantominesque, a pesar de que el restaurante estaba casi vacío. Pedí pakora vegetal, que era sin sabor de patata en una pasta pasada, no hay otras verduras, ni siquiera un poco de cebolla. A la principal. . . . Elegí un chefs especiales, uno de los platos más caros pensando que me iba a conseguir algo mejor que la tibia, minúsculo seco balti tenía allí el año pasado. Recibí un gran plato de salsa con unos 8 trozos de paneer ahogando. La salsa no estaba mal pero el paneer tenía la consistencia de un dedo seco de pescado cocidas, que se deterioró como cã trabajé por mi plato hasta comestible.Yo solía venir aquí todo el tiempo cuando vivía en Mosely 15 hace 20 años. este restaurante era genial entonces. Ahora prometo nunca volver.ps. No dañaría los camareros a levantar la sonrisa extraña también.

I visited here yesterday with some friends, and ordered veg pakora, and a chefs special, the pakora was sliced potato coated in thick gram flour, the 'special' called bharta was a tepid plate of gravy which had a lovely edge of oil, plus some hard dry cheese in it, no sign of even an onion let alone a pepper, which I paid more money for than a standard balti. The best bit is I could still taste it 14 hours after eating. Now thats value for money....yes its cheap and cheerful but I wouldn't feed that to a starving dog.....eat here if you have no idea what good food tastes like.

Visited for late lunch as was in Birmingham for t20 finals day and did not fancy stuff in the stadium. Bhuna lamb, tandoori deluxe with fresh naan bread was tasty and authentic. Staff were attentive and pleasant. Oh, pappadoms with sauces/chutneys were delightful.

A second visit here and not disappointed. I really enjoyed my meal and it was worth every penny. A little slow on taking our order, but it was very busy. The staff were very friendly. A definate one to return to.

I'm not to keen when it comes to a curry, because I have never had a curry that has left me wanting another, that is until I visited the Diwan Balti, Six of us ordered different meals, and each of us all agreed we had just experienced, and consumed the best of what Birmingham has to offer when it comes to a curry, absolutely delicious, we really recommend this restaurant. Also the staff had a good rapport with their customers nothing was any trouble for them, Best evening out in ages, which was a bonus. The six of us agree on this review. So them a try.

We've had food here on several occasions and it's always tasty and delicious. Great customer service. Nothing is too much trouble. The balti chicken tikka is worth a try as is the balti lamb & prawn dishes.

Así ha sido casi dos años desde "TIKKA" (internacional) asociados klub kurry han revisado el Diwan y entre nosotros hemos visitado más de 20 veces con facilidad. Pero la última noche era especial, así que aquí vamos. . . . . bienvenida muy amable y nos llevaron a nuestra mesa por Zaf que siempre tiene tiempo para nosotros.

Grupo de colegas de diversas partes del Reino Unido, quien quería una auténtica experiencia balti. Otra suma comentarios este lugar realmente bien. Buena comida, mucha variedad, traer sus propias bebidas alcohólicas (Aldi a unos pocos metros) y un personal amable. Grandes panes Nan mesa enorme siempre una agradable sorpresa.

Yo solía cenar en este restaurante con regularidad, pero siguiendo mi experiencia reciente no se apresuraban a volver. Nos sentamos en la llegada, y luego a la izquierda por 15 minutos antes nos dieron un menú. Pedí mi comida, pero encontré que gritaba en el camarero como él era se destacó en el extremo de la mesa en un restaurante ruidoso. Pedí un trago, el cual llegó 20 minutos más tarde después de ordenar de nuevo. Pedí el plato kebab que estaba sheesh muy seco y sin sabor, y mi pollo y curry de verduras estaba lleno de aceite. El único comentario positivo que puedo dar es que la comida estaba bien caliente a la llegada.

First time visiting last night with friends, the food was excellent and the staff are so friendly, I will be visiting again & I highly recommend.

Fuimos un sábado por la noche con un grupo de 8 amigos y disfrutamos de una tradicional balti, así que llévate tu propio sin licencia de alcohol. Un poco de pescado entrante Tandoori seco pero los platos principales que tenía (pollo y champiñones balti) era buena. Pan nan eran demasiado grandes y terminamos dejando mucho.

He estado yendo a el Diwan desde principios de los 90; era grande entonces y ha sido cada vez desde entonces. Así que decidimos parar para tomar un bocado rápido en nuestro camino a casa los domingos por la noche. Fue a 5. 30 cuando llegamos así que fuimos los primeros, aunque pronto se llenaron con diners dispuestos.

Consistently great food, service and price. Only criticism is the watery dips that come with the pappadums...

First visit and certainly wont be the last. Food was lovely , fresh, tasty and well presented. Service was efficient and friendly. Recommend booking as very popular. Nicest curry I have had in a while

Venimos a este Diwan cada Navidad para una familia tradicional curry (en las leyes son de Birmingham). Balti Balti Bhuna Jalfrezi y son especialmente buenos como el pan Naan enorme. El personal es muy amable y servicial. Sin duda merece la pena una visita. Aproximadamente £100 por una cena para 7, que sería muy difícil conseguir un mediocre para llevar curry para 7 en Guildford.

Han estado aquí varias veces, ya que es uno de los favoritos de mis amigos. Tenemos un club de curry, sobre 15 personas cada par de meses. Es muy buena para estos grupos bastante grande, limpio, acogedor, con excelente servicio, traiga su propia bebida.

Been in this restaurant 3 of us, we liked their food, specially I ordered lamb biryani... The was exactly what I wanted, tadka was nice as well , definitely will be back, atmosphere and service was very good. Menu is cheap as well!

Visitamos el Diwan con nuestros dos hijos temprano en un domingo por la noche. El camarero era fantástico con los niños y nos dio buenos consejos sobre el menú. La comida era magnífica. Pedimos un Korma para mi hijo de 8 años. Dijo que era el mejor de todos. Mi balti Madrás estaba lleno de sabor y picante muy bien. El calor era genial y no sólo hizo caliente con guindillas como sucede en muchos casas balti. Sag pollo de mi esposa fue excelente. Fuimos oír recomendaciones siguientes y las críticas. Sin duda regresaremos. Una gran relación calidad-precio. Entrantes, platos principales, naans y arroz cuatro, todo bajo 50 libras. Calidad a precios razonables. El único inconveniente era la mesa era pequeña, que era un poco irritante, pero sólo un pequeño problema con creces por la calidad de la comida.

This place has been here yonks over 20 years to my knowledge it's a small and cosy little place serving authentic and reasonably priced food they do a fab Dhaal and fresh baked Naans

Wonderful food a cut above most curry restaurants. Fresh spices and expertly prepared. Service is low key but friendly and efficient. This place ticks all the boxes.

Recientemente me pidió comida y pedimos desde aquí no hay gambas como un amigo tiene una alergia a los mariscos. Por desgracia llegó con gambas y me llamó ya que tuvimos que desechar la comida por la carretera porque es muy alérgico y tuve que llamar a una ambulancia para ayudar a él. Después les llamamos un miembro de personal acordado no pedimos gambas. Porque pedimos un reembolso y les dijo este es un serio problema para otros clientes, el miembro del personal pasaron la llamada de teléfono a un miembro de personal enior, quien dijo que no le importa la alergia y fue nuestra culpa! Recomiendo No comer aquí si tiene alergias. Haremos esto a la agencia de normas alimentarias y tendrá más!

Encuentro con unos mates después de cricket y queríamos algo local. No podría haber encontrado un lugar mejor. El servicio era amable y genuina y no era inoportuno. La comida era fantástica. Entradas mixtas tierna y sabrosa con un buen nivel de las especias. Los platos principales eran de buen tamaño de la porción, extremadamente sabroso y nuevo perfectamente condimentadas. Good service, good value and tasty food. I usually order the 'chef's recommendation' as this is half portions of two main dishes - that way i get to taste a bit of variety. Usually one of the dishes is better than the other though.

Excellent food and friendly staff. A really great idea is the combination menu, where you get two smaller baltis so you can sample a wider range of dishes. Probably worth booking if you are going at a busy time - weekends.

I have been a loyal customer for year 15years plus. the service has gone down hill and change of chef doesn't help when you have been going for year and used to the same curry for years what a shame I won't be retuning sorry.

Good food, friendly service, best fluffy naan breads. We frequently visit a number of Balti restaurants in the Balsall Heath and Moseley areas with a large group of friends. This is our favourite for its pillow-like naan breads and friendly service.
