When visiting family in Dumfries, we always come here for more than one meal. On a rare occasion where there is an issue, you only have to say and it's sorted with politeness, friendliness and no fuss. That is rare as the food is great. Decent portion size, home cooked, well cooked and fresh. The service is fabulous too, again polite and friendly.

Our family were on holiday at Glencaple and we spent the day with them. They treated us to lunch at the Nith Hotel. It was excellent in every way - the location, the dining room, the staff and the food. My steak pie and sticky toffee pudding was exacly to my liking and watching my grandson consuming an excellent 16oz stake (which was perfectly cooked) was a great pleasure. We have a photo to prove how large and well cooked it was. All 6 plates were returned empty and would thoroughly recommend to anyone. I cannot comment on the prices - I was not paying !!

Went with the girlfriend to The Nith as I've never been before, and after today's lunch we will definitely be back! I had the macaroni cheese with crispy shredded chicken on top, and everything about it was really nice; good side salad, garlic bread and chips, Mac and cheese was cheesy funnily enough, and the chicken was a nice topping. My girlfriend had the sweet chilli chicken with rice and chips and she said it was one of the best meals out she's ever had! Will definitely be back, also staff were welcoming and friendly, plus the location of the main restaurant is nice and relaxed.

The Hotel is situated in the lovely riverside village of Glencaple, 5 miles south of Dumfries, next to the River Nith and the views from the restaurant over the river and surrounding countryside are outstanding. The friendly staff are welcoming and efficient even when the quite large restaurant is busy. A wide ranging menu certainly meets our requirements and the food and its quality and quantity has always been very good or better.

We had set out to eat at the Boathouse but it was full so we tried the Nith. The servers were so friendly and helpful. Came out to the Nith for lunch with a friend to take advantage of the eat out scheme and I honestly wish we hadn’t bothered. The food was abysmal. The Brie wedges were clearly bought in frozen with a little side salad that so went it flooded my plate. They didn’t even dress the salad. Waited a decent amount of time for our mains which were two bacon and cheese burgers. This was the straw that broke the camels back. It was under seasoned, overcooked and over all just awful. The coleslaw was a watery mess which I assume was also bought in. Can’t fault the young girl that served us. She would have probably made a better attempt at cooking out food than the so called ‘ chef ‘. Ignore the 4+ star rating because they certainly are not!!!! Don’t waste your time or your money.

Thought we would get a few salads tonight as no one could be bothered cooking...'just nip to the Nith' someone said. Sounds like a good idea. However an hour later we were just leaving with our steak salads! 1 HOUR! for steak salads! Got in....ready to tuck in and steak isn't cooked how we had ordered it! £40 wasted on uncooked food, an hour wait and 3 salads! If you think about 'nipping' here for take away food don't! After a walk by the lovely scenic River Nith estuary we wanted an evening meal: the Nith Arms looked good, it’s right by the estuary. In daytime it has a great view over the estuary towards the mountains. By night it’s pitch black but the car park is well lit fortunately. The restaurant was very clean I must say but the meal I had was disappointing: I chose Chicken burger and chips, the chicken turned out to be undercooked and pink inside, I told the waitress and she brought me another one which was fair enough. It has an excellent Trip Advisor status so it’s a pity to have to give it a poor review: if you don’t have the chicken it’s a very nice place.

We are regulars at The Nith but will have to consider other venues from now on. Firstly we ordered s starter of spicy chicken wings and 4 arrived for the pricely sum of £5. Then we had a roast beef dinner which was tough and a turkey dinner. The portion sizes were very very poor for the asking price and we left hungry and disappointed. Come on The Nith, time to pull up your socks and offer good value for money and better quality food.

We enjoyed the sites and meal our large family shared here. A fairly diverse menu, with some items suitable for vegetarians, we all ate extremely well. With exception of the lovely older lady at the bar, all the waiting staff seemed to be extraordinarily young and unskilled. Chatting together rather than tending tables, cell phones visible and in use, serving from left and right, armpits in patrons' faces, scraping food on plates together to carry more plates, ... all very low-brow. The caliber of food and location (with a beautiful ship at port too) should warrant better representation by staff. More etiquette training required: it matters.

The food at the Nith Hotel is excellent, and we weren't surprised to see the restaurant filling-up with non-residents. Triy the "steak special" - a 16oz steak for £10.95 - for real value. Bear in mind that it's thin-cut, so it won't come rare... The Seabass with vegetable stir-fry was a really good choice - though you can assume the fish is farmed somewhere in the Med - but no different to anywhere else. The roasted Duck Breast with plum sauce was good too. Starters are around a fiver, mains £10 - 15. Only disappointment was the Haggis with Whisky sauce: I really couldn't detect the whisky...I sould have ordered a shot from the bar and poured it on.. A hot peppercorn sauce would have been better. One point to remember - the restaurant is up a flight of stairs from reception and there is NO LIFT

Unfortunately the slow service let the Nith down yet again. There is one senior waitress who is run off her feet trying to look after everyone and she does a good job but there are several younger waitresses who don't seem to do very much. They spend their time laying tables for future customers instead of attending to diners who are waiting for their plates to be cleared or for the next course. There is sometimes too much talking to be heard in the kitchen instead of all appropriate staff out attending to diners. Slow service lets this place down very badly indeed.

Visited the restaurant at The Nith when my wife and I were staying in the village of Glencaple with her brother who is a local resident. The welcome was friendly and we were taken to a pleasant table in the comfortable, warm but slightly dated dining room. For starters we enjoyed freshly prepared and flavoursome options including crostini and breaded camembert, which we followed with well cooked and pleasantly presented main courses served on warmed plates. The main courses included breaded haddock for me and steak pies for my wife and brother in law. The vegetables served with the meals were nicely cooked and served hot. We did not order dessert but the menu options looked tempting. Wasn't too impressed overall from the service or the meal. I ordered a well done steak, it had obviously been pre cooked earlier in the day and warmed up. Staff didn't bother returning to table to ask how meal was until clearing plates away. Was difficult getting a drinks order taken by the staff also, when the drinks finally arrived there was some missing from the order. I understand it's a busy time for pubs etc, our table had been booked well in advance so the staff were aware of the numbers for that night. Much better service from other pubs in Dumfries.

When you are in Dumfries and want a delicious high tea then the place that I am about to review is the place for you and that place is the Nith Hotel which is located in Glencaple which is located just west of Dumfries.I visited this hotel today for high tea and had a great experience, the high tea package consists of a delicious main meal of your choice of which I chose the gammon steak with a fried egg which was delicious and I would highly recommend, bread and butter with butter from Lockerbie creamery which is delicious too, scones with butter and jam which I enjoyed and cakes which are enjoyable.Other reasons that I like this place are that the place is clean and inviting, the staff are friendly especially our waitress tonight and the welcome is warm.I would recommend this place

The Hotel has a warm, comfortable and inviting atmosphere, During winter months the large open fire offers a welcoming sight. The main menu is varied and extensive as is the special menu which is often changed with various choices. The meals are cooked as they are ordered and not left on a hot plate in the kitchen to be served as and when. There is also a varied drinks menu.Highly recommended.

My friend and I went for a meal tonight. The main meals were lovely and no complaints. We both ordered the "Homemade rice pudding topped with caramelised pears". The order wasn't rang upto the kitchen so it never came, we had to remind the staff. It eventually came and was cold and the rice was uncooked. We sent it back and when it returned it was hot but still uncooked. We returned the dessert a second time and we were offered an alternative. Also the pears were cold, tinned and not caramelised. Overall dessert was a big let down. When paying the bill separately one of us was charged full price where as my friend got a free pudding. Was very disappointed that I had to pay for the dessert. However, I have to say that the bar man was very good and apologetic for the poor dessert just a shame I had to pay for it.

We visited for an Anniversary lunch for 11, we had a great food and service, I come here for a treat and the midweek steak deal for £9.99 is great value. The staff are always polite and quick at serving.

5 of us went for a steak. Only £9.99 but it should have been edible. Two were okay, two were a little grisly, one was inedible. We were told that one would be free, when it came to pay we were charged half. Poor barmaid was left in a predicament, it wasn't her fault!!!!!. We as a group have been regular visitors, but never again. Sure it will be their loss.

I was here tonight with my husband and I ordered the beef burger with haggis. The burger was burned and I told the waitress I couldn't eat it. She informed me she would tell the chef. On paying the bill I again said about the burger to be told again that she would tell the chef. Needless to say I had to pay full price. If they want customers to come back discretion always errs in favour if I only had to pay half the cost but to pay the full price is unsatisfactory to say the least.

The Nith has the best food in Dumfries and has extremely reasonable prices with specials and always friendly and helpful staff. The decor is a bit dated and it's a bit of a drive out from Dumfries but always worth it for the amazing food.

We recently chose to eat here after reading other reviews on Trip Advisor and on the recommendation of a work colleague and were not disappointed. It was a busy Saturday night when we arrived but we were seated and served very quickly (we had booked our table which I would advise). I expected to have to wait for our food but again it arrived quickly and the food was excellent. Although it was busy, it was easy to have a conversation without the whole place hearing what you are saying, the tables are well spaced out and all staff were efficient friendly and helpful. Will return soon and cannot recommend it highly enough. Well done all!

My wife and I stopped at Glencaple Quay en route to Caerlaverock Castle. I checked the menu at the Nith Hotel and was impressed. We returned slightly early for their 5 p.m. opening and sat outside with the most wonderful views over the Solway estuary. We ordered their 16oz. rump steak meal and were delighted with the quality. We have lived in Argentina for years where beef is fabulous and we would have been happy to match this with meals we 've eaten there. At £9.99 this is simply great value for money. Desert was equally copious and tasty. The rest of the menu looks terrific and I'm sure we will return even though we don't live nearby . Service was very friendly and there were many happy customers being seated even though this was early on a Tuesday. Faultless!!

Attended a funeral reception and the staff could not have been nicer and put on a fine spread for me as I am a Coeliac.

Absolutely gutted to find this place had ceased trading, since our last visit in August 22. This hidden gem was part of our journey down south for the past 7 years, after stumbling on it by accident. It offered a hearty meal for a fraction of the price they charge, at a service station
