Dice & a Slice in Colchester

It was pretty expensive, but the place did have a nice atmosphere, the staff were very friendly, my only complaint is that the food was average. the board game selection was vast, and it was a nice quaint experience.

Came for a teenagers D&D birthday game, all the young people had a fab time. We were made to feel welcome and were well loomed after. This gaming cafe has an amazing atmosphere. We will definately be back.

Had a lovely day only thing that let the day down was the garlic bread was over cooked but the toasted sandwiches were delicious they have a very wide range of games to play really enjoyed the day.

Popped in for a coffee and cake with family (daughter was home for the weekend with her partner), and decided to have a go at a couple of games. Great atmosphere, even better cake, and almost every single board game you can think of. Will definitely return.

Saw this on a local ghost tour and had to visit! Really nice relaxed atmosphere, airy and clean. And surprisingly fairly quiet. We visited around 1pm and not too busy with alot of tables taken. Mostly young families or groups of teenagers. The service is friendly and again very laid back. The food snacks we had were perfect for our afternoon gaming. A huge selection of games. What was going to be a short visit turned into a full afternoon. Highly recommend with friends for a chilled day.

Fantastic, this is by far one of the best cafes in Colchester I usually spend a whole day here with either friends or family, always lots to do and plenty of games to choose from!

This store is great, I went to play their new SWU event and the store was very welcoming, staff were super friendly, prices are very reasonable, the place is not as stuffy as other places I've played in. The whole place is great and I look forward to going back

Terrible wait for food 3 of us I received mine almost finished another jacket potato arrived that was almost finished mine was long gone friend enquired about hers still not done so she got a!refund and we left! We were there over an hour shall not return .

Obviously, you come for the games but the food is good too. I've had few vegan options including chilli baked potato, curry, nachos, and cake - all good quality and portion sizes.

Great little place to either kick back and relax or to enjoy a huge selection of games. The place was packed when I visited and every table had something different going on from classic board games to card games to modern releases to RPGs. Nerd heaven!

All staff very friendly and happy to help, the drinks were delicious and at a good price. The cafe was warm and welcoming with a large number of varying games. I found the cafe when I was looking for a place to try a game I had seen online and saw that their website listed them as having it. I booked a table and mentioned it in my booking message mainly just to check that they had it. We we arrived they had got the box out and ready and put it on our reserved table, a service I was not expecting and made for a great first impression. Great little board game cafe that I look forward to visiting again in the near future.

Always have a good time in Dice & a Slice. The staff are friendly, there's always a relaxed and fun atmosphere with likeminded people, and the variety of games on offer is exceptional. It's suitable for all people new or experienced to games or those who like to relax with a coffee and study or work.

We love Dice and slice and it's probably the only reason we haven't moved out of town. We come often to try new games all the time, never have to play the same game twice if you don't want too. The staff are always very lovely, some are really friendly and great to chat with. Food and Drinks you have a lot of options. Sometimes feel like the gluten food is sometimes a little smaller but just glad to have the option! I bring everyone I can here and you should too! They also hold events, including a monthly LGBT night with the local group!

We visited as a family group of ten. There is a good selection of games and the children enjoyed playing. However the service and food is very poor. We waited an hour for food and when it arrived, it was low quality and tasteless. Some members of the group went without food for a further 15 minutes. Staff were unsure if the vegan food we ordered was actually vegan. Two of the party have gluten intolerances and were given the wrong food, resulting in both being very unwell overnight. Some staff were clearly stressed because of how busy it was, and were quite rude at times for this reason. There appeared to be no manager on duty. We felt sorry for the staff, because they were clearly run off their feet and not supported.

Jacket potatoe l ordered for my granddaughter was inedible.Undercooked,spoonful of cheap cheese.

Really enjoy coming here with kids and friends. Food and drinks to buy and good price for all day board gaming. Lots of games.

Brilliant place to go out to, lovely tea and cake and the games room was amazing.

Tables too small to play a lot of the games on because as 2 players you are given a small table so you are limited as to which games you can play. Probably best to book a table in advance and request a big table. Have to edit this because I was given a caffeinated cappuccino instead of decaffeinated as requested, hours later I am feeling the effects of the caffeine with a pounding heart, I am highly over sensitive to caffeine so not happy.

This is our favourite place to go on our days off. My partner and I visit at least once a week. Incredible selection of Board games available to play and staff that are obviously familiar with many of them and are passionate. The space is great and whether it's busy or not, and it's a very good price for hours of fun. If you get hungry through the day they have a great selection of sandwiches and jacket potatoes and cakes to keep you going.

Came in today to spend time with my family for my last day in Colchester for a while. Absolutely fantastic time was had by us all. Delicious Chai Latte! Highly recommended. Brilliant place 👍🏻

We visited Dice and a Slice for a Saturday afternoon as we have visited board game cafes elsewhere and were looking for something to extend date night to all day. We phoned shortly after opening to book a table and this was quickly sorted (although you can walk in if there’s availability). We were greeted by friendly staff who were pleasant throughout our visit. We were seated and bought some drinks and began our session. They have a great library of games to play and we found some new 2 player games which we loved and will be buying. The food and drink range is great and reasonably priced, the nachos were so good and you definitely get your moneys worth! Great board game cafe and we will definitely return when I am next in Colchester. A big bonus is that the playing fee covers all day, not a time bound session like other cafes meaning we didn’t feel pressured or rushed when trying to learn new games meaning we enjoyed them more.

The place and the service was nice. I went for the LGBTQ game night. The food was pretty good and the place felt safe.

I arranged to meet some friends in Castle Park, Colchester today to do a play reading 📚. Unfortunately the great British Sumner let us down and it rained! Undeterred, we headed into town and chanced upon Dice and a Slice. There were 7 of us altogether. We had a very warm and friendly welcome from Drew, Chloe and Phoebe who could not have been more helpful, they catered for our every need! Four hours later after drinking, eating and reading our play we left having had a great time. In fact, we enjoyed the experience so much, we decided not to risk Castle Park next week but have booked a table at Dice and a Slice instead! Can't wait!!!

A hidden gem! If you’re just looking for a café, this is nothing special - but it’s clean, the prices are reasonable, there’s a surprisingly broad menu, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not going to play board games as there’s so many other cafés in Colchester, but it doesn’t bring the experience down - it’s a solid café. Where this shines is as a place for board games. For very cheap prices, you can play board games all day here, and there’s a huge variety to choose from. Had a great time here and will be visiting again soon!

Walked past on my way to Colchester Castle with family and thought it looked like the kind of place I’d like to visit, but sadly wouldn’t be able to at the time due to having other plans. On our way back from the castle and park my 4 year old announced she needed the toilet so we popped inside and asked if we could use the facilities. Staff were very friendly and helpful, directing us to the toilets without any issues. As my visit only involved using the loo, I can’t comment on the quality of the food, but I can say the toilets were very good; spacious and inclusive, which I always like to see. Cake on the counter looked yummy and I would have liked to have had time to stop and get some, as well as having a quick game as the place looked very nice and inviting. Will try to visit again properly in future!

I adore this place. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. Brilliant place to go if you're into board games and you can take your own to play. Reasonably priced table rental and a huge selection of games to play and a section to buy games also.

Great place for everyone, very extensive selection of board games. You need to pay extra for games as expected. The latte is good, nothing special but good. There are lots of chairs and comfy couches.

We sat at a table for 4 at 13:20 that was reserved at 14:30 which was perfect for us, but we queued up to buy food and it was 13:25 by this time and we were told that we could book an hour to play games but we had to vacate our table at 14:15 in case the people arrived early who had booked for 14:30. if this is the case, why don’t you reserve the table from 14:15? We were not offered an alternative table, although my wife eventually found one and we sat down to start playing a game with two of our grandchildren at 13:40 and a few minutes later, one of the waiting staff plonked a 14:30 reserved sign on our table saying we had only got the table until 14:30, despite paying for an hour for the 50 minutes. Not very good customer service and not a very customer friendly reservation service and quote an aggressive attitude from the staff today and they made it a really unenjoyable experience. (Oh and we have really enjoyed coming in the past!)

Our daughter took us to this place that I'd never heard of. We spent an hour trying to figure out how to play a particular game. In the end, we gave up but it was so much fun trying to work it out. And the hot chocolate I ordered was superb. I loved the ambience too. Already planning to go back soon

Me and my partner have been here multiple times and are never dissatisfied. There are a wide range of board games to play and the staff are always super helpful and friendly. The atmosphere is great with like minded people all chatting away about their games. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves playing board games as much as we do or just wants a coffee/bit to eat.

Great range of games to cater for all board game heroes 👏. Book a table if going on a Saturday as it is full, but just cruise on in during the week. Food and drink options are proper. Some of the two player tables are too small for some of the boards and way too small once you combine with some snacks and drinks.

Always a relaxed and calm ambiance

A cheerful games cafe inside a civic meeting venue. The cafe has a good range of food but when we visited, it took an hour to get ours and the coffee took 45mins. Luckily we were on a comfortable sofa! The atmosphere is friendly but quite peculiar. The kitchen staff seem very inexperienced and it's not somewhere to go if you're looking for speedy service or anything more than basic grub.

My trip to this establishment was rather delightful, the food was tasty and filling. The food was swiftly made and i ate it even quicker. The seating was luxurious to put it simply, the couch was extremely comfortable and cosy. service was impeccable and a sense of unity came from the kitchen. with everybody working efficiently shows great leadership. furthermore as i look around this hub of excitement, families and friends enjoying the cafe. My summary of this cafeteria is my rating! definitely recommend for all colchester go-ers.

We love Dice and a Slice for our staff nights out or Wednesday daytime visits. The staff are friendly and accommodating. There is a wide selection of games and we feel at home when we come to play.

Took the grandchildren there just before Christmas. Food quite good but felt it was a bit pricey Kids loved it though

A nice cosy cafe, where you can sit down and work with the free WiFi, play board games with your friends and enjoy delicious food and drinks. This certainly is one of Colchesters hidden gems. There is a huge selection of various games to help you pass the time. It is also open late on weekends so is definitely a good alternative to those bored of night clubs and pubs (like myself) Go give it a go!

A fun atmosphere and friendly staff.

My cousin and I popped in with her 9 month old daughter. We ended up not playing games because the baby woke up as soon as we got in and she smelled the food! The staff were helpful and friendly and the food was nice although it took a while. It’s mainly snacks, but they made me a pizza from scratch with a kind of tortilla wrap base. I enjoyed it. The hot chocolates were really good! Would definitely recommend.

Lovely cafe with great food and drink and loads of great board games. My son and I played Pass the Bomb, Scrabble, Shut the Box and World Quiz whilst we were there. The staff were so friendly and helpful. A really fun place to take my son that's a bit different.

We love dice and a slice and have visited many times either as a family at the weekend or myself and my four year old son in the week! Plenty of games to pick from and we have found some great news games we had never played! The food is all very good too especially the nachos! Always a lovely selection of yummy cakes available too! Great concept, simply done! Many enjoyable hours spent here! It is my son's favourite place he always asks to come here!

We had a day out to the Dice and a Slice, we took the family which included the very small people. Place was tidy and well presented and the person working till gave us an overview of where we would find everything. The board game selection is massive, although the ones suitable for small people as you would perhaps expect is far smaller. Kids enjoyed the ones we played, and thankfully all contents were there. Table we was on was plenty big enough to spread out as well. We had some warm drinks fairly early on, mostly hot chocolates (orange one was very nice!) Lunch was perhaps a little more of a mixed bag, jacket potato's were good but some of the other meals didn't quite hit the mark unfortunately. Perhaps need a few more kid friendly options on the menu to. Kids weren't keen on the milkshakes, and to be fair I tried one and was a bit disappointed too. We had a good time, and a perfect option if you don't want to be stuck inside at home / weather not great outside...!

Visited here a long while ago pre covid and have not had the opportunity to go back again until last week when I met an old school friend I had not seen for 44 years. Still the same great service, but only had coffee as my mate does not eat cake ! I returned this week with my partner and we had a meal and I had cake too, which was very nice . My partner was slightly disappointed as there was only chocolate brownie on offer for gluten free people ( everywhere does chocolate brownie and he is a bit bored of it ) apart from that everything was very good thank you.

Good atmosphere and concept - average food and drink - overall, it's a unique offering locally and for those that want some entertainment while they eat, this is a pretty good place.

So so so thrilled that Colchester has it's very own boardgames cafe! A lovely neat place with friendly staff and yummy snacks and drinks. Excellent variety of board and card games available to play at the café and/or to buy! Love it! They know their stuff, keeping up to date with the dice tower news, latest releases, etc. Highly recommended.

Always a pleasant way to spend a few hours. As a massive board game fan, it's a delight browsing the shelves (though having kids in tow does limit my options for actually playing!) and be able to "try before you buy". The selection of new games for sale is extensive. Most of the games were in good nick but some were a bit tired - staff were made aware so hopefully can be fixed up. Operation, for example, had only one body part and no batteries. The cafe serves food quickly and at reasonable prices, though I do wonder if the menu could do with some slightly more 'interesting' vegan options (e.g. options with vegan cheese - the nachos looked gorgeous, if only I ate dairy).

A great place to chill, get some good food and play the day away with a large library of games of all complexity and for all ages. Friendly staff and a cool bright atmosphere. Spend a couple of hours or the whole day you won't regret going.

More than just boardgames. Has a really good and extensive menu with plenty on offer for anyone especially if you have dietary requirements. Plus have a great selection of cakes and decent coffee all at reasonable prices. You can also pay by the hour or for the day to play the extensive range of games they have we had children aged 2, 5 and 6 who found something to play. Would definitely go back again

A lovely café with a fantastic twist. The site itself is accessible, with a ramped entrance to the building. The café has an expansive menu of both classic café items such as hot drinks and cakes to soft drinks and hot, surprisingly tasty food at a great price point. The cafés main selling point, stocking hundreds of board and tabletop games is cheap to access with a wide selection to choose from. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, suggesting a selection of games for new board game players that worked with two people, and are polite, not approaching patrons for orders. You can also bring your own games to the site and use one of their larger tables to run a group activity of your own. Could not recommend more highly.
