Denleys, Essence of India in Exeter

First visit & had heard such great reviews from friends & acquaintances, so was really looking forward to the experience…. but unfortunately I was really disappointed. The food was bland, badly cooked & the service chaotic. I will not be returning!

Food was just as amazing as ever, and very quick.Staff are really friendly and genuinely happy to have you there.The seating has now extended to the back so there is much more room, keeping people a comfortable distance apart.I’m so glad Denley’s survived the lockdowns so I could go there again. Can’t wait to go again!*Apologies that I’ve only got a picture of the popadums (love the red sauce). By the time I remembered to take a photo of the rest of the food, it was already half gone!

Ordered a takeaway from our holiday air B&B, food delivered quickly and was very nice. Only sent one rice when we had thought we ordered 2, when we called to check they had misheard us rather than sending the wrong order. Kindly sent out another rice on the house within a few minutes, thank you.

Definitely worth checking out. We all really enjoyed our meals and the quality seemed very good . Service was also friendly. Just a shame they are not close to where we live so we can go regularly.

Back in Devon, our first meal out had to be Denley’s. This time we tried different dishes. King Prawn Jalfrezi and a Lamb Shank with chick peas in a thick spicy sauce. Both were absolutely delicious. Their food is up there with the very best of our hometown Leicester and the Curry mile of Rusholme in Manchester, maybe in the No.1 spot!The staff are friendly and efficient. Highly recommended 10/10(we will be there again before our week is over)

We are visiting Topsham on honeymoon. We visited Denley’s for an evening meal. The staff were completely charming from the moment we arrived, really attentive without being intrusive. The food was fantastic, and the offering was different to Indians elsewhere whilst also including traditional curries. When they found out we were on honeymoon, they also came with a free bottle of fizz and free pudding (which whilst delicious we struggled to eat as we were so full!). We had a brilliant evening and will definitely return if we are back in the area again.

Server rude and aggressive looks like he was having a bad day and wanted to take it out on customer .

During lockdown these guys have been absolutely fantastic offering a take away service better than any in the area. Wonderful food, courteous delivery drivers and great prices with discounts offered for an early collection. Best Indian in the South West 2020 completely deserved

The food was insane, we had the tikka masala, lamb biriani, chicken pasanda and it was sooooooo good!! we really enjoyed the atmosphere they make you feel so welcome and go above and beyond with service. Highly recommended!!!

Me & my wife & our 2 children were visiting family & friends in topsham & we advised to come to this restaurant & try out their meal well what can I Say because words won’t describe how we felt very welcomed by the staff such a friendly atmosphere, The food was absolutely outstanding plus the fact they were very up to date with the hygiene with cov19 all the staff looked to be very trained & professional,,plus felt very safe with my family their,, my advice to other customers is if your in topsham you have to visit this place to understand what it’s about, will definitely be back & thanks to all the staff at Denlys for making us feel like at home, excellent food excellent service 100/100 world star restaurant

Me and my friends went for a meal and the 3 females were made to feel very uncomfortable by the waiter, they made comments repeatedly throughout the meal, we were told that what we had ordered was boring which was rude and unnecessary, The food was very expensive and underwhelming, cOVID-19 regulations seemed very strange and unprofessional, we were charged £2 each for 12 poppadoms that we didn’t order or want, very disappointing experience

We ordered online and drive from Budleigh to collect as Denley’s has always had such a good reputation. Unfortunately when we got home, our order was incomplete. In addition, the curries we ordered didn’t taste good (as if they had been sitting around for longer than they should) and the chicken was really tough; so all round a very disappointing experience.

I found the covid precautions very disturbing. The waiter wore blue gloves throughout the whole evening and did not change these. This was discretely pointed out to the head waiter who said the man had been changing them. I explained I had watched him clean an area and relay it for the next people with no change of gloves and hand a man a drink all while still wearing the same pair of gloves. I explained I did not want to make a fuss but perhaps the said waiter did not understand about transmission of germs etc. The head waiter then went off I thought to explain to said waiter. He then came back to explain the waiter had been using hand sanitizer on his gloves I explained this was not how it is done and that he should just remove the gloves and practice good hand hygiene. Might as well talk to myself. Will not recommend this restaurant

Denleys has always been our go to place for an Indian, however the service is becoming extremely poor. We’ve ordered delivery 3 times in the last 6 months: the first time, it was 30 minutes late, the third time, 45 minutes late and this time over an hour. At 20.45 (40 mins late) we called to ask where the food was to be reassured that it was on its way... at 21:10 we called to cancel the order because it still hadn’t arrived and didn’t want to pay £35 for a meal that had probably been sitting around for forever. If you want your meal to be fresh and on time, I would avoid. Third time not so lucky.

First time trying it and is the best Indian I have had in a long time. Lamb madras was particularly good and tender.

An impromptu visit where the online booking facility was easy to use and able to accommodate. The value meal for 2 at £40 is a bargain. Food was excellent and service incredible. We will definitely revisit

We visited after reading the feedback on here. Neither of us are local so finding somewhere decent to meet up and eat is often pot luck.This was great. Definitely a cut above the normal mainstream curry restaurant. It’s very neat, very smart and well laid out. The menu is extensive with a wide range of specialities and lesser known Indian dishes as well as all the staple favourites.The food is well presented and fantastically flavoursome. It’s a bit more expensive than some but then again is a lot better than many.The staff were lovely too despite having to endure all the extra Covid imposed constraints.We’ll be back.On a side note - and nothing to do with the restaurant, Topsham is shockingly bad for parking!

Was staying nearby and noticed they were taking part in a Cobra eat out promotion , of bogof on Cobra and 20% discount. Staff were friendly, had some nice set meals, all the food we ordered was very nice. We would go again, didn’t get five stars as price a little expensive, and despite getting the bogof on the cobra no sign of the 20% discount, staff also kept ignoring when I kept mentioning the promotion. Having said this the food was very good.

Recommended by our landlady where we were staying, we went to Denleys. We went simple, popadoms and pickles followed by chicken tikka masala and lamb jalfrezi with rice and naan. Absolutely delicious 10/10. Friendly staff, great service. Highly recommended.

I came here with my husband and I was not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, extremely well presented, the staff were courteous, friendly and attentive! I thoroughly recommend this lovely little restaurant full of a large amount of flavours!

Had a takeaway for 4 people with starters, sides and naan bread, food came 20 minutes earlier than was stated when the order was placed. Everything was absolutely delicious, lamb was tender. Overall potentially the best Indian takeaway I've ever had. Highly recommended will definitely go back when I next visit Topsham

After a couple of previous visits over the years in a variety of configurations, myself and four friends visited Denleys on August Bank Holiday weekend. The first thing to strike us were how well Denleys is managing Covid safe guidelines at the premises. Our temperatures were taken on arrival and were were swiftly ushered to our table. Tasteful screens divide the tables and instantly we felt very comfortable in the safe environment they've created. The knowledgable staff really couldn't have been more welcoming and attentive, making spot on recommendations to suit the differing tastes of our rowdy little group.The food was nothing short of faultless - absolutely delicious, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. I've seen the odd negative review pop up about Denleys over the years, generally in relation to price. To that I say that the experience you receive at Denleys is not that of your average Indian takeaway. I firmly believe the price point well reflects the excellent level of quality and service you get from an evening at Denleys. It's the classic 'you get what you pay for' and perfect for a special occasion or reunion with friends after the long months of lockdown - you will most definitely will not be disappointed!

We regularly eat at denleys and we are always so impressed, therefore it only seemed fair to write a review and share our experience. We ate with our friends who were visiting from London on Friday evening along with our parents and we all had a great evening. The food quality and presentation is second to none and the staff are all incredibly friendly. It really is the best Indian in Exeter and arguably a fantastic curry house. You won’t be disappointed!

Me and my partner visited Devon this weekend and found this place not too far from the hotel. The staff were so attentive, the food was amazing, and they managed to do all this with the new covid restrictions as well. Such lovely people

We tend to set out benchmark pretty high with curries and this one matched the one we rate the most.The restaurant looks quite unassuming from outside, being on Topsham's high street, but inside, it really is a beautiful, contemporary place. Great care was taken on both our visits for cleanliness with COVIDAll staff here are so friendly, and the main guy is a native of Leeds, and knows what us northerners like! First visit, we ordered SHATKORA BHUNA MASALA and TIGER CHICKEN. These dishes came with naan bread and rice each, and were just amazing. Both were rich, full of flavour and certainly no shortage of meat and sauce. The onion rice we had was also extremely nice.Second visit, we had BAHARI MURGHI and KING PRAWN MASSALA BALTI. The king prawn dish was a little change from the regular Balti style, and it was done to absolute perfection. Rice portions were very generous and the naan breads also large. We recommend the Peshwari. We don't bother with starters or desserts because we cant manage them ever, but we did have two really nice bottles of champagne that were well-priced in comparison to other eateries. We were also given a couple of complimentary drinks of our choice.In all, this is a place that we cant recommend highly enough. Just superb, and if you're like us, you'll want to pay these guys more than one visit!

The food is exquisite. The staff are very friendly and covid 19 aware. Booking online is mandatory for track and trace regulations. I overheard another customer state that they had travelled a good distance as the experience previous was so good. Bottom line, would we return? Definitely.

Coming out of lock-down, we were the only customers for most of the time we were there, so had the place to ourselves. The staff were very personable, attentive and upbeat. The food was excellent and the dishes we chose were distinctly different and equally good.

We ordered a take-away for 4 people, to be collected when we wanted it 90 minutes later. Everything was ready when we went to pick up the order and we were served by a friendly member of staff. The food itself was excellent, but only gets 4 stars due to it being on the pricey side.

I have eaten at denleys many times and had numerous takeaways after touring the Uk with various business partners and locations this is andoubtly the best of the best and we will continue to use Denleys Regards Dave Piggott

This is the first time I have commented on takeaway food. Last night my husband and I shared a chicken tikka masala, pilau rice, garlic naan and vegetable samosas. The chicken was dry, unappealing, lacked in taste, and did not resemble any masala that I have previously eaten from any Indian restaurant. It had the appearance of having been around for a while, reheated and was barely warm. The only visible vegetable in the samosa was potato. The naan and rice was ok. Very disappointed, would not recommend and have no plans to return.

We decided to try Denleys after a shockingly very bad experience with Argie Bargie . The service on ordering was very professional and the food was outstanding . I’ve definitely found my new favourite curry house and it’s closer to home . 5 Stars for you guys highly recommended. Look forward to our next delicious meal . Keep up the good work . Thanks.

Firstly apologies to Denleys, I'm frontine NHS and haven't had a moment to think.After our takeaway debarcle in February , we were offered a free meal as an apology due to the issues we faced regarding the allergy and overpayment. The food was outstanding and, totally onion free so I could chow down to my hearts content. Once the manager had got involved all our concerns were ironed out, and provided a thorough explanation as to what went wrong. The food reminded me of why we love Denleys and we will definitely reorder again. Thank you to the management for excellent customer service.

I have not yet eaten in the restaurant but have had takeaways and home deliveries during the Corvid lockdown. I have ordered through the website and they call to take payment. The food arrives hot well labelled and generous portions. They deserve the plaudits they have had in food awards recently.

Well totally disgusting ordered food and agreed delivery price with this restaurant. Call 1 hour later to say travel price gone up 16 mins away . Will never order from them again

I really don't enjoy having to write a negative review, especially for a local place who previously have been fantastic. However we have spent a good part of today and yesterday just sorting out an overcharge of £18.10.We ordered the takeaway through, as I have an enzymatic reaction to whole onions. I spoke to the gentleman on the phone who advised me indian food is not for me, and I assured him I was fine with ground onions, to which he said he can't do onion free, so I told him in more detail that I was fine with ground, it was just sliced and chunks and whole onion.I ended up passing the phone to my other half as I was getting quite frustrated.My partner ordered two pilau rice, and the response to him was pilau rice was impossible to make onion free, so my partner said just one pilau and a boiled.This was at 16.23, we went in at half five as told and our food was being kept under the counter. We got it home and dished up, the pilau rice was completely onion free. The meal itself wasn't the same as before and was OK, not up to their normal standards but edible enough. I checked the receipt whilst eating,and was a good job I did! We were overcharged by £18.00 which included being charged two different prices for two pilau rice and we only had one. I phoned the restaurant at 17.00 and was told the manager would call me back, the lady on the phone was lovely and helpful.I hadn't heard so contacted the restaurant at 20.00,some three hours after my call. They confirmed the over charge and we had to go down there for the refund. We are only local but even so its a real inconvenience when you've just started a nhs training course and you need to be prepared for a Monday and all your time is spent sorting out a ruddy curry.Am so sad and so frustrated as their food and service is normally fantastic, we won't be going back.

I wrote a negative review about my takeaway experience back in 2017. But we were back several times since then, the most recent was October 2019, and man! what a difference! It was DE-LI-CIOUS. Tasty, super well presented, really excellent. It is so nice to have such an excellent Indian restaurant almost on our doorstep. What a treat.

I took my partner here for a birthday meal as an Indian meal is his favourite. We were recommended to Denleys by a good friend and we certainly weren't disappointed! The choice of dishes was excellent and it was lovely to see so many different choices compared to the usual ones elsewhere. The staff were friendly and very efficient and the food was excellent. We will certainly be returning.

We are regular visitors to the restaurant. We placed an online order at 17.00 ready for 18.30 collection. The food was ready on arrival. However, despite a journey of only a few minutes to get hone the food was at best tepid and some of it cold. This is not usually the case, it’s normally very hot.

Denleys - I'm really disappointed with the curry I've just had! In particular, the tarka dhal and saag aloo dishes were utterly tasteless. The tarka dhal was the consistency of soup and totally tasteless! Such a shame as I've had some nice curries there. Are you compromising quality for numbers of customers? I won't be swinging by again to find out. Lost a customer there.

Wow!! Just happened to come across this place when visiting the area for work. Went on a busy Friday night and just managed to get in so would advise booking. Service was top notch and the food was brilliant. One of the best Indians I’ve been to in some time. All the staff were so funny and had time for us and asked why we were in the area and genuinely seemed interested which was nice. The owner/manager was so cheerful and gave out a free baileys to everyone at the end because it was Christmas which was just extra nice. All the food came served brilliantly in lovely dishes. The food itself was even nicer and just the right amount of portions. Would 100% return if we were in the area again.

Twelve of us went for a meal on Thursday 19th September. From the start to the finish, we had a fab evening. The meals selected were delicious, beautifully presented. Also, one of our party did not eat curry... but they did a separate meal for her, and another of our group was completely allergic to tomatoes - again, a separate meal was done for her. Nothing was too much trouble and will certainly go again.

We had a take away from here first time we have been and we were supper impressed, the nan was so fluffy and tasty and the spice was just about right we will definitely be coming back here again.

Enjoyed a fantastic evening at Denley’s tonight. The new extension has really opened up the place and the staff were really friendly and attentive. The menu is full of traditional dishes together with some more unusual chef signature curries. I’d highly recommend the mushroom rice, Saag aloo, chicken tikka masala & peshwari naan to name just a few. Denley’s definitely deserve a visit plus they do take out too!! Would highly recommend.

Staying with friends in U.K. This place was recommended for a week night dinner. We were greeted at the door and asked to sit at the bar while we waited for our table (which had been booked) , I was surprised that we were then left sitting at the bar and no offer of a drink while waiting was offered, after about 10 minutes we were shown to our table and then offered drinks. We had a combination of three different dishes and rice to share between us and the food was fine and very filling, we didn't order dessert because the main was plenty, the nan bread was great. I thought the wines on offer were very expensive and the choice limited. I couldn't give more stars because of this and also because we weren't offered drinks while waiting for our table and in such a small area it was noisy.

We’ve just had a special family meal at Essence of India. Really lovely surroundings, fantastic food and really attentive service. Great advice on which meal to choose, friendly staff and really tasty food. We couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you.

We visited this restaurant last week for the very first time and was very impressed with the food the variety of dishes the meat especially the lamb so tender and the naan bread so light the best I have ever tasted. We enjoyed our meal so much we went again last night and tried two different dishes and we weren’t disappointed it’s going to be a regular restaurant for us for sure the staff are very pleasant and the dinning room

Ordered a Take away and meal was very nice. Staff very friendly when ordering and there is a place to sit and have a drink while waiting but we went down to the local pub for a drink instead. Meal very tasty. They do different deals in the week which is a great saving. Would recommend

I drove there with my parents and sister as a celebratory meal, last Saturday. My birthday had been the previous day. I was able to park opposite the restaurant and we crossed the road and went in. I, quickly, saw that we were the first ones to arrive. We were greeted at the entrance and shown to our table, which was next to a window overlooking the road. We were told, they were doing some work at the back as they were expanding the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of red wine and we given the menus. At first, I thought about having a set vegetarian menu for one. But, I changed my mind and went for the vegetable massala with pilau rice. My sister and I decided to share a poppadom and we also ordered four naan breads. My sister and parents had different curries. The poppadom was brought first and we had half each. As we were the only ones there, it didn't take very long for the waiter to bring our food on a trolley. He put our plates on the table and I saw they each had a pattern on them. I'd already noticed the naan breads were very big and my sister later told me, we should have just ordered two (half each). Everything was put onto the table and we started eating. As I don't eat very much, I found my meal to be filling (especially with the naan bread). We'd been given different sauces for the poppadom and we also used them for the naan bread. I couldn't finish the rice, so my dad had the rest of it. The staff had already been told about my birthday, and when a waiter came to ask us if we wanted coffees, he told us that he would bring something for free. After everything had been cleared, he came back with four little glasses of Bailey's mixed with Tia Maria and four hot towels. I didn't have a coffee, but a fruits of the forest dessert. When it arrived, it felt like it had literally been taken out of the freezer. By the time the bill had been paid and were leaving, other people had arrived and were having their meals. We'd been given a discount card for the future and were told we would get some money off after a certain number of visits and/or takeaways. I would recommend this restaurant, if you're wanting to have an Indian meal.

We found this restaurant by chance and were lucky to book a last minute table. This restaurant far exceeded our expectations and was a delightful meal . Between 3 of us we has two chicken tikka masalas and one chicken tikka balti , perfectly sized portions, very good quality of ingredients and fantastic service from the staff.

Some of the very best Indian food in the Exeter area, we mainly do take always but restaurant is excellent.

Delicious takeaway food. Be warned though - it's lots of plastic packaging. All the dishes are different with unique flavours.

Really made to feel welcome by excellent staff and good ambience. The food tasted very fresh and tasty. I liked the idea of reward stamps but will definitely return for the whole experience.

This was our first time here and it certainly won't be our last. The service was friendly if a little slow. But to be quite honest it was very busy in the restaurant and with takeaways so it's only to be expected. My one gripe was that people waiting for takeaway were queuing alongside our table, so we were constantly being jostled. When we go again I will ask for a table away from the takeaway. The food was lovely. We were a party of 4. I didn't have poppadoms but the rest of the group did and said they were lovely. I was the only one to have a starter. A sheek kebab and it was one of the nicest i've had. My main was a chicken dansak and it was amazing. the meat was beautifully cooked and the sauce was divine. One had a Jalferazi which was lovely. Another had a Tava lamb, which was tasy but some of the meat was chewy. My friend had a chicken tikka massala and although the meat was cooked nicely the sauce was very sweet. It was still very nice though. All in all a thoroughly nice evening with good food and a friendly atmosphere.

We have been visiting this amazing little Restaurant for a while and never had anything other than great service and a fantastic meal. Last night (Christmas Eve) was special though!

A really great curry in a lovely cosy atmosphere where the food is great and the staff are welcoming, happy and professional. Couldn’t have asked any more from my visit. Would defo go back again!

Took them a little while to get us seated as they were VERY busy. But once we were sat down the waiter was very attentive and the food was absolutely fantastic! Recommended!

We visited tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The staff were attentive and helpful and the food was delicious. We tried dishes that we have not seen on Indian menus before. The meal was rounded off with fresh orange slices and chocolate mints.

We've been meaning to visit Denleys for over a year now to find out if it was as good as people say and we weren't disappointed. It is isn't often that you can dine at a restaurant have have superb food and quality service. We really can't wait to go back.

6 of us all together 4 adults 2 teenagers.. Took my mother in law for an Indian here.. Omg the food was absolutely amazing we even raked about it the next day... All 6 plates we're empty.. Only had one fault they got the bill wrong!! but was soon rectified with a refund as didn't notice till it was to late.. But staff were very helpful and pleasant... Will defo be going back

Denley's is a great bet if you're looking for an Indian restaurant in Exeter. The venue is very small and can get busy so it's worth booking or at least phoning beforehand, but this adds to a cosy atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful. Most of all though, the food is lush and the portions are a perfect size. There is a great selection of vegetarian food too which I find is sometimes difficult to come by in similar restaurants in the area.
