I would never recommend anywhere that charges £21.60 for two medium glasses of what is clearly cheap supermarket wine.

By far the best hotel I've stayed in , in a long time! The room was exceptional with all mod cons and little home made soaps as finishing touches. Bed was the comfiest bed ever and beautifully decorated. Staff were lovely especially Carol who made our stay extra special, food was amazing and breakfast was top notch! Not much to do in the village but you have everything you need here for a relaxing break away.

We visited after hiking in the local area for a late lunch ( 1500). The pub itself is very tastefully decorated and has a great ambience. Service was great and the bar has a large choice of draft beers. To start I had the fish cake ,which was served with a poached egg and tartae/ hollandaise sauce. It was easily the best fish cake i have eaten and the sauce was sublime. Main course was steak pie served as an individual pie with triple cooked chips and veg. Whilst I know this is typical pub grub it was great and was a generous size. Desert was an apple and calvados cheescake with pistachio ice cream. Again the quality was top draw and presentation was up there with a top end restaurant. My wife had minestrone soup which looked and tasted superb, followed by a burger with the chocolate fondant for desert. We both agreed it was easily the best “ pub” meal we’ve had for many years. In all a great experience and reasonably priced.

We visited on a Thursday evening while staying in the area. I chose the cheese souffle to start, which was light, airy and very cheesy. A decent sized portion of bread accompanied it which meant none of it was wasted. For mains we ordered the haddock & chips and bream. The batter on the haddock was light and crispy and the chips were well-cooked. The bream was perfectly cooked. The only negative is that it didn't come with much in the way of vegetables and the side order of greens was £5 which when added to the cost of the bream brought it to just under £30. If you're going for dessert we'd highly recommend the snickers dessert which is very aptly named! There is a good range of well- kept cask beers and also reasonably priced wines by the glass. Service was friendly throughout. Of note, pre-booking is advisable as most tables were full on the Thursday, so I imagine it is even busier at the weekend.

This is a great restaurant. We made reservations for four, but a couple we met on the Dales Way came in at the same time but didn’t make a reservation. The staff were so kind to create two more places at our table. The atmosphere is very nice, it’s an old building, beautifully made into a very nice restaurant. The food was very good. Highly recommended.

Good things first; nice atmosphere, very friendly staff, good wine list. The menu had one vegetarian starter and a soup and two main courses, however the starter was also one of the mains in a larger option and the soup was sweet potato, the same as one of the mains so not really any choice at all. The ragu was very poor, cold, under-cooked sauce and starchy pasta. The "sweet potato fondant with sorrel, sage & oyster mushroom fricassee and herb cream" promised much but was none of those things - a big chunk of sweet potato, some cubes of sweet potato, some sweet potato peel, a few mushrooms, some shredded herbs, and a pot of runny sauce. All this for £20 a plate once service was added. I'm no chef but I would have been embarrassed to put that on a plate in front of anyone, the "new team of chefs" certainly gave us a memorable dining experience but probably not in the way they intended.

This was the most appalling meal I have ever been served in a restaurant. I don't think the chef knows what a ragu is and has not yet learnt how to cook pasta - pretty basic stuff. Some watery tomatoes, a few tiny pieces of undercooked aubergine, and starchy overcooked pasta - a flavourless meal, all served luke warm. It just simply is not good enough to serve food of such low quality, let alone charge nearly £20 for it. I would advise anyone who wants a vegetarian meal to avoid this pub.

Visiting for the first time with my partner she didn’t want a starter because she didn’t think she was hungry enough but I had one, scallops !! When it came it was three of the smallest scallops I’ve seen in actual fact they were cut in half £15 for 1.5 scallops and over cooked . Main courses, chicken sous vide endive salad £19, absolutely tasteless this is what my partner had I had fish of the day which was plaice I like plaice £25 it was under cooked and not fresh we sent them both back and still paid them £50 for the privilege. I don’t normally complain and I will pay for good food but this wasn’t a good experience, which is a shame because pub does have nice feel about it .

We stayed at The Dalesman on a rainy Tuesday (22/08) and were warmly greeted when we arrived. We were upgraded in our accommodation at no extra cost, which was a lovely start to the stay. The bar area was cosy and had a vast array of spirits and wines to choose from. The room we stayed in (2) was spacious and immaculate throughout and would request this room, when we return. We booked in for Dinner and enjoyed an excellent meal with warm and attentive service throughout. We were the only people booked in for breakfast, but were not made to feel out of place, being the only ones ordering food and enjoyed a fantastic breakfast, with the sausages needing to be mentioned, as the best I have ever eaten. Thanks again for a fantastic stay and we will see you again soon.

We'd just arrived for a week's stay in Sedbergh. Called into the Dalesman early evening to ask if they could accommodate a table for 5. Waitress just looked at us and said, "No." We then walked across the road to the Red Lion and received a warm welcome and ate there. We returned to the Dalesman one sunny afternoon to sample their Sedbergh gin. Whilst ordering at the bar, we asked to book a table for our final night in the village. The barlady went to book us in & I told her we also had a small dog and she just looked up and said. "No dogs inside." On both occasions, the staff were abrupt, almost to the point of rudeness. Unfortunately, this was the coldest hospitality that we received during our stay in Sedbergh, and pleased to say all the other eateries gave us a warm welcome, including our small dog. Shame, because the pub looked nice.

I came here last year as I got a voucher and it was good so thought I would try again as its fairly local to me. Yes delightfull is the word, I would say better and you can tell, the price is better value than when we were last here and the flavours are totally different. I can only comment on the lunch menu though this time. Four of us ate I had the lamb flatbread, my partner had (as she always does) fish and chips now this needs a mention gluten free battery and what a difference, so so crispy, my sis had the ploughman's and my mum went for scallops off the evening menu. Service was faultless and we were the first in but by the time we left it was full but it created a lovely atmosphere for daytime. We all decided to come back for dinner and booked on the back of it as the menu looks very decent

This was my first trip to this lovely village/town. We dropped our son off for the summer school and picked him up ( amazing week at the school too) and we checked out all the menus for each place as there is more choice than first meets the eye . We made a bee line for the dalesman as on the menu instantly you had symbols for various types of dishes and allergies. This saves you asking and quite often waitresses not knowing g!..I have to be gluten free for medical issues and believe me it can be a pain in some places. Food was a bit of a wait but it was very busy, during the week too. Service after we started was brilliant and attentive. We did get chatting to the gentleman that served us and he said that all the staff were local which sort of goes with the vibe and the village too. My hubby lived the beer selection and I have to me tion the MIP rose wine....divine. We want to come and stay soon. Praise where praise is due.

I was in sedbergh for both business and pleasure. I was lucky enough to have a fine day, which in July was lucky believe me. I got to sit outside and have lunch with a colleague, although noisey with traffic it is nicely shielded with greenery to prevent some noise. I had the lamb flat bread which was full of flavour and the tasting, I had apple tatin before but peach I was unsure of, and I was not disappointed at all. Service was good but not over the top. I ate here in in January and I can see an improvement. I for sure will eat again next time. I have to say sedbergh has some great places to eat.

Another member of our party had got there before us the night before and received the same abrupt tone… she really should be provided with some training or the management should take care to teach her how to approach customers.

We arrived on a warm Saturday afternoon around 3pm. We had travelled to look at a possible property to buy and so we were scoping out the area. When we arrived it was not busy, but a few people in and plenty of space inside. We were looking to have a meal and drinks before we went on a walk. At the bar, we asked if food was still being served and the reply was in no uncertain terms an abrupt "We don't allow dogs inside!" So we didn't hesitate and left - it never crossed our mind to sit outside and eat! Is the management aware that they are on the border of the Yorkshire Dales, near the Lake District, the mecca of dog walking, "Herriot" country and Wainwright walks? It's legendary, to sit by the fire with your dog and have a pint, but they seem to have missed that literary and cultural connection that tourists want to experience - how very stupid of them! Maybe they also missed the memo that dog ownership has increased after COVID or that almost everyone we passed had a dog, or that they are surrounded by farms with sheep and sheep dogs! It is unfathomable to my mind that we were not allowed to pay the best part of £30-£40 for two meals and drinks INSIDE with our very well behaved dogs who quietly flop down under the table. The expectation was to banish us to the outside - what if the weather changed, then what? Eat soggy food in the rain? It's Yorkshire and the weather changes hourly! If they had said 'Well we have a 'dog friendly space' and directed us there, that's fine, we understand not everyone is a dog fan and some people allergic. The pub even had two distinct rooms so that would've been possible and acceptable, Quite frankly, a country pub in an area where dog walkers literally flock to, made famous by a local vet that doesn't allow dogs simply beggars belief. If anyone is thinking of going for a meal in a lovely country pub, with a warm dog welcoming atmosphere then all of the food establishments in Kirkby Lonsdale - even the high-end Italian restaurants are dog friendly and packed with dog walkers and their owner's enjoying drinks and meals - go there because the Dalesman is not dog friendly and as a consequence not even human friendly.

I am struggling to find the right words to review this bar where we had dinner. I rarely give such a bad review and I know the hospitality trade has suffered greatly but our experience here was awful. The food is dreadful, in fact our whole visit would be laughable if we hadn't wasted such a lot of money. We started with a couple of beers and one aperol spritz which was their only drink resembling a cocktail. The spritz arrived and must have contained a thimble full of aperol, the drink was clear rather than the usual amber colour (wish I had taken a pic). We ordered wine for the meal and chose a bottle of Malbec at £24 but were told this bottle wasn't available but could be replaced by another Malbec at £10 more! We had heard the staff telling an adjacent couple that another wine was no longer available and then later heard the two waitresses discussing the fact that they had run out of chardonay?? They also ran out of food choices off the menu early evening (we were there just after 6pm). We could hear people around us (two different tables) moaning about the service and the prices they now charge (£16 for fish & chips!!!). On to our experience of the food. We both ordered the vegetable en croute. What arrived was not en croute, there was no sign of pastry but instead we were given a plate of stewed veg on top of burnt toast which we crunched our way through trying not to break our teeth in the process! Main courses were the trio of lamb (distinctly average) and the beef cheek ragu which was in a word "shocking". The waitress asked how I had enjoyed the ragu when she collected my barely touched plate and I told her in a quiet voice (not wanting other patrons to hear) that it was in fact tasteless. I would say that it resembled pasta with beef soaked in plain water. I had only eaten a few mouthfuls but was still charged for the dish and there was no apology. I would like to add that I travel all over the world and I write many reviews and refer to Tripadvisor in the majority of cases before visiting a restaurant. However we booked this place for dinner on discovering our own hotel (Black Bull) was closed for evening meals on Mondays and had I known of the rating of 3.5/5 I would never have booked. I would ask anybody reading this review to please not make the mistake we made and go elsewhere, it has to be better than this.Sent from my Galaxy

Lovely little pub with a comfy, rustic outdoor seating area. Service was quick and efficient, and the lamb Sunday roast was definitely one of the best we’ve had. Nice desserts too. Worth the visit if you’re in the area!

On our first night in Sedbergh we had pre-booked a table and had a very good meal so we rebooked for the next night. Unfortunately, this was not as good as two of us ordered burgers which were slightly raw in the middle. We had...

Really pleased we found the Dalesman, after 2 or 3 days admittedly not too strenuous days walking a section of the Dales Way and staying in our campervan nearby - especially as many of the other pubs, restaurants and cafes in the town seemed to...

Fell lamb, heaps of veg, two pints of "Old Man" ale from the Conniston brewery. Fantastic. Careful Covid precautions. Some things are still right in this world.

We weren't expecting tapas at a traditional pub in this region but that's what we ordered and what a hit it was. An excellent, varied selection of tasty little dishes. We went for just about everything on the menu, sharing between three. Puds were more...

We were on holiday and staying in a cottage near by. A good selection of beers and the food was excellant. It was fortunate that the weather was warm and sunny as dogs are not allowed inside but plenty of seating outdoors

Lovely place, proper English pub with brick work, beams and fireplaces. Had the bacon chop, broccoli and roast potatoes which was lovely and cooked to perfection. Lovely welcome on arrival and a nice selection of beers. to avoid disappointed you need to book in these times. Also has rooms which would be a great base for exploring the Dales or Lake District.

Very very hospitable and excellent food. Really welcoming when we arrived with no booking. Very well kept beer. Very good choice on the menu and good quality food. Staff were very helpful and prompt with service - thoroughly recommend; all round a great find. Perfect for a lunch on our long and tiring bike ride.

We grabbed a very spontaneous 2 night stay in Sedburgh and found a local for dinner. Unfortunately for us not dog friendly, but staff on the phone happily reserved an outside table and wanted to accommodate us. The food was fantastic. We are not picky, but have in our last 20 years been lucky enough to have eaten at some amazing places. My husband said ‘This is honestly one of the best, if not the best I’ve ever had’. He had the Tomahawk for 1. He does not compliment easily. I had the pork belly rib, son had the fish. All outstanding. Genuinely was not expecting this. Not for any reason other than we were just grabbing a quick dinner locally to fill a hole....the staff were fantastic too. Blown away. We may just pop back tomorrow as the burger on the other table looked incredible

Stayed in the two bed cottage as no rooms available. Needs updating, bathroom etc. Single bed in small room stained. Kitchen ok but oven dirty and the whole place needed a good clean, dusty shelves, lights. Comfy bed and good linen. Restaurant under staffed although bar man very good under pressure. Social distancing was a problem as people queued at the bar. Food ok. Had fish and chips. When we went to check out in the morning I was going to raise cleanliness issues but it looked like the cleaner was front of house and checked us out. Perhaps they are struggling with staff issues.

Food ok, tho when I commented that I couldn't find any anchovies (which had been detailed) as part of the salmon caesar salad, the waitress was quite surprised at my query & then on enquiring in the kitchen, came back to say there weren't any in stock.I was looking forward to a glass of gin to celebrate my birthday, but neither of the fairly common gins usually stocked in pubs, were available. A pint of cider sufficed. Service was not great, so unfortunately not rewarded.

The staff were really friendly, they had a good selection of beers and board games and a lovely warm fire. They offer lots of tasty sides, recommend the onion rings and the paprika chips! Little bit pricey.

A lovely pub with friendly staff. The pub food looked delicious and there were plenty of specials to choose from. We went for the tapas and chose one of each of the dishes on offer. The presentation was good, but each dish was heavily coated in batter which put us off. This pub is definitely worth a visit if you are passing, but perhaps avoid the tapas!

Lovely traditional pub with a great selection of beers and real ales on hand pump. Roaring fire on a really rainy day served great food with a good selection including desserts. Good service and we were a party of 10

Best thing about our lunch was that the cafe was dog friendly. The coffee was OK but only lukewarm. The soup and toasties were a massive disappointment. Only time we've ever been served soup we couldn't eat. It was meant to be tomato soup but it was so thick that it looked and tasted more like a pasta sauce. Taste wasn't impressive and it was loaded with soggy croutons. The toasted sandwich had unmelted cheese. It was floppy, spongy and almost soggy. Horrible. If you can't get soup and a sandwich correct you shouldn't be working in a kitchen

Can’t fault the service and the usual Costa coffee standards. But seriously marked down for atmosphere - a noisy aircon unit or fan filled the space with white noise, absolutely impossible to hold a conversation.

Used to be a little bit different, a little bit higher quality in ingredients and in beer offerings. Now it’s just the same downgrade Peroni to Nastro etc. Save a few pence but turns the product into the same as everywhere else instead of that small cut above. Such a shame.

Very down side is no dogs allowed. I have caravan close by and most my neighbours have dogs but they don't visit the pub. Shame
