Beyond me why it takes 30 mins to put a sausage roll and a spoon of coleslaw on a plate. Service is useless. Another man had to ask for a take away box for a sandwich after he waited 30mins. If this was a real business it would be bust.

Grounds of the Dales Centre are neglected, weeds everywhere, shrubs and hedges need attention. Broken border stones. Tearoom is always short of something or other on their menu. The teapot for two provides barely enough tea for two small cups, overpriced compared to competitors. Gift shop has typically overpriced "craft" items which seldom seem to sell and has very few customers. Staffed by at least two people it must be run at a loss by the council. Still, it's subsidised by council tax so why worry.

£4.75 for a dry pastie that was 80% pastry. The mince pie was slightly better but really bland. Also the weakest tea in the North Pennines (how much would an extra teabag in the pot cost?). Shame as Stanhope is a beautiful place in a fantastic area.

Called for late lunch. The menu is limited to start with but most of our choices were 'unavailable' This is not the first time this has happened, so won't be going back, The young person who served us was polite, pleasant and helpful, couldn't be faulted, but overall, wouldn't recommend the place. It appears that stock levels are kept to a bare minimum - need to get the balance right. Coleslaw left a lot to be desired, 'mature cheddar cheese' toastie definelty wasn't mature cheddar. Did they think we wouldn't notice? No brown bread so had to make do with white. Overall, disappointing.

Stopped for a late lunch on a Monday afternoon and they had very little available which was incredibly disappointing so we were left with very few options other than what they had to finish from lunch products. Cakes didn’t look great either so we didn’t bother with them. Only had machine for coffees so couldn’t cater for those who don’t have regular milk.

A superior standard visitor centre in Weardale with a tea room specialising in home cooking. It also includes a comprehensive information centre and gift shop. Other outlets in the picturesque courtyard offer a range of cards, chocolate, gifts and crafts. Further on site facilities include the Durham Dales garden. My wife and I had a short walk round the site and were impressed with the design and beauty.

I met two friends here yesterday for lunch. I had been concerned because of some of the previous reviews but cannot overstate how pleasantly surprised I was! I arrived early but on explaining to the delightful lady serving that I thought 'the reserved table' might be mine she reassured me that I was very welcome to sit there and that even if it wasn't she would make arrangements when necessary. I had a delicious coffee, with complementary biscuit, while waiting and read my book in comfort. When my friends arrived we chose from a very good menu of 'light bites' One had lentil and bacon soup which looked - and I was assured - tasted great; another had quiche which was warmed at her request and came with a reasonable amount of salad garnish and the third had a bacon brie and cranberry panini also well garnished. Two of us completed our meals with delightful cake/tray bake. The facilities are warm, welcoming and I don't think we could have found a better place for what turned into a two hour + visit! I highly recommend it. (Oh and 'cards' taken in payment for even small amounts with no issues whatsoever).

For such a beautiful little place it seems to be blighted with bad eateries. More often than not I usually swerve this establishment due to its ridiculous prices. However, this is not the reason for never coming back to this place. The reason is the miserable attitude of the woman who served us this day. She was nearing the autumn of her life, wore glasses, and actually made me feel really uncomfortable. No please or thank you, no eye contact, and when she did look at me I felt like I was something she scraped off the bottom of her shoe. She is obviously in the wrong job and should get her feet up and steer clear from people who want to enjoy their day out. All she has to do is stand at the till and take money, serve the odd order now and again and smile, or even pretend to be happy! The heavy prices are one thing, but misery personified is another!

Had the ‘lentil and vegetable’ soup and was expecting a soup thickened by lentils with tasty vegetables. Nothing of the sort. The soup was excessively thin and watery and the vegetables were vastly overcooked, bursting into balls of water In the mouth. The ‘stock’ had no real flavour except for an unpleasant taste at the back of the throat. I asked for a brown bun, and if I hadn’t known that that was what it was meant to be I never would have guessed. It might have seen a sprinkle of brown (definitely not wholemeal) flour at some point, but it was small, insubstantial, very neatly white and with almost no taste. For my drink I had a herbal tea. Thankfully, there’s little they can do to spoil a tea bag and hot water.

I have NEVER been served by a more miserable assistant than the one who served me here. (and I've lived in London for 10 years, so trust me, I've had a few) Surly, barking at me. When I started politely giving my order I was greeted with a "Drinks First!!?" command. She honestly was like something out of a Victoria Wood sketch. I was made to feel like a total inconvenience to her and she wanted to be anywhere but working there. Why on earth is she in a front of house role? I heard other customers complaining about her too. Completely spoilt the experince.

The Durham Dales Centre tearoom in Stanhope is part of the Durham Dales Centre complex. It is roomy, modern and has a limited menu of hot and cold snacks, primarily variations of the sandwich theme. From a hot perspective however, they do nice sounding home made pies, baked potato etc. We just had tea and coffee which were fine and prices throughout the menu are most reasonable. Service was speedy and friendly.

Visited the new plant shop which has just opened in the little shopping arcade and decided to pop into the tearooms for 'coffee and cake'. Ordered 2 coffees a can of pop and 3 slices of cake, which came to £15.55. Unfortunately there seemed to be a problem with the card machine as our payment would not go through. It wasn't our card as we'd used it just 5 minutes prior to purchase plants on the same complex. Understandably the (very pleasant) girl serving us asked her (not so pleasant) supervisor for advice and this is were the tone changed and we were treated as though we were about to do a 'eat, drink and run'!!! We only had this card on us, no cash but were told in no uncertain terms by the very abrupt supervisor that she 'could not let us leave the premises without making payment first' to pop to the cash machine at the Co-op in Stanhope! But without any other method of payment what exactly did she expect us to do?? We're local, we live in Wolsingham so, as demanded by the supervisor, we left our name and telephone number - she even checked to see we'd left the same name as was printed on our payment card, and we were instructed to return immediately to make payment and they close at 4pm today, and she again reminded us we *must* return today. What we had intended to be a pleasant break for coffee and cake before returning home to put our newly purchased plants into our garden, turned very sour and the decidedly average cakes and luke warm coffee left a bitter taste. We duly returned immediately with payment and that will be the last time we set foot in this tearoom. The supervisor would do well to learn some customer service skills and perhaps be a little more trusting of folk - life is much more pleasant that way!! A very disappointing experience.

We called for coffee and cakes and were very disappointed at the quality of food. This was the first time I have ever had a slice of apple pie in a pudding bowl - not sure why it was served this way. the crust on the pie was so thick I couldnt eat it and there were barely any apples inside the pie. Coffee was horrendous so altogether we wish we had called at the other little coffee shops nearby because there was no way the experience could be worse. Dont waste your money here.

Whilst I have visited several times and ordered hot/cold drinks, I have only visited twice for food.On Saturday (27 Aug 2016), we ordered 3 jacket potatoes and 2 children's [sandwich] lunch boxes. It took 35 minutes (I kid you not!) for the food to arrive. On a previous occasion we waited in excess of half an hour for food and were shouted at by a member of staff after requesting a refund!Treat yourself to fish & chips at the "Market Plaice" instead!

We have tried this cafe a few times and I can honestly say today was the worst experience ever. We ordered our lunches and after a wait of 30 minutes they arrived. I had ordered a ham salad. I was told (after waiting 20 minutes) there was no ham, I asked for a chicken salad, none. I was told I could have turkey and then told there was none. I ended up with a quiche which was acceptable unlike the salad which was dreadful. It was served on a rather small dish. Tasteless potatoes in mayonnaise. Diced beetroot, a minute green salad, a small spoonful of coleslaw. All in all a big disappointment. We both made a resolution never to return.

We went to see the Durham Dales Centre, particularly the chocolate shop but sadly it had closed down. We went into the café for a snack and found a reasonable selection of food and pleasant staff.

We have been coming to this delightful tea room, in the pretty village of Stanhope, in the heart of Weardale, for many years. The tea room has steadily improved over the years but the home cooking has always been excellent. Whether you want morning coffee, a breakfast, afternoon tea, a snack or a full blown lunch, the choice is yours. There is always an excellent selection of delicious cakes and scones. Our visit today was for lunch and I enjoyed a lovely slice of steak pie, with new potatoes, carrots, swede and cauliflower, with separate gravy boat, for £6.75. The pie had a light crust and the deep filling was absolutely packed with meat. Tasty and delightful. My wife had a bacon, mushroom, cheese and tomato panini and her mother had a slice of cheese and onion quiche, both of which were nice.If you want to explore the magnificence of Weardale, awash with purple heather at this time of year, this is a great place to stop for refreshment.

We stopped here on our way home from Durham. Stanhope is a lovely little town and well worth a look. After a look around and a takeaway lunch we called in here for a cup of tea before setting off again on our journey. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The tea was good and the seating comfortable.A useful place to stop while travelling through Weardale.

We visited the town, which is a lovely little bustling place with a choice of independent shops. As we passed the Durham Dales Centre we decided to have a snack but we did see full lunches being served. Good selection of cakes and traybakes and choice of sandwiches, soup, etc. at reasonable prices. Only downside - we waited ages for the food but this of course could have been because of the lunchtime trade.

It does look a bit like a canteen but is very clean.Found most of the staff friendly. We only ever have tea, coffee and cakes. Cakes are delicious and there is a good choice. Coffee also good. Never had main meals. Menu appears to be usual cafe selection of jackets and sandwiches. Can get very busy as do get coachtrips in on their tours into Weardale. Its a long wait if queing behind them! Dogs are not allowed inside which means we can only visit when its warm enough to sit outside. This means we dont go there much. Its part of the visitors centre so there are various others things to see and do. There is parking there, but not a lot.Its worth going if you are passing through, but not worth a special trip.

The room is a bit dingy with dark furniture and dark blinds. There is no atmosphere. More like a canteen or supermarket cafe. The food and drink is not cheap - which is why it is disappointing really. Coffee is from a cafe machine - no proper coffee here. The ingredients in the food are ok but not high quality - eg. That cheap yellow orange cheese. The scone is quite nice. The place is clean. It's handy if no where else is open.Bit sad really.Staff are a bit hitty miss. Some are friendly whilst others are down right rude.Hmmmm if there's somewhere else open.... I'd go.

My daughter took my wife and I for the 45 minute drive from Barnard Castle through the picturesque Durham Dales to Stanhope to visit a friend and for a day of sightseeing and shopping. We had a lovely lunch in this cozy tea room. My wife and daughter had a delicious Leek & Onion Quiche and I had the Coronation Chicken Sandwich. We were happy with the food as well as the friendly service. We would definitely come again.

Went with a friend for lunch on a Sunday, thankfully we got there early as it filled up rather quickly. Menu has a variety of meals, snacks and a selection of cake, all at very reasonable prices. Had a sandwich which came with a side salad for £3.99. The tea rooms were clean and tidy with very helpful staff, I'd definitely go back.

A frequent visitor to this establishment it always is very welcoming. It can get busy in the summer, and I've enjoyed a great English breakfast and Sunday lunches. It is good value for money, no frills home cooking. Favourite dish Mince & Dumpling with vegetable and the do offer large or small portion..although I have to say the small is only slightly smaller. Good selection of cakes for a sweet tooth with your tea or coffee. It certainly doesn't over promise or under deliver. The staff are always very welcoming and pleasant.

Discussed pint Guinness gone upto £5.90 a pint, said to staff, cost gone down and owner has put up Guinnes to a very high price, even the staff agreed really hike up price, they too thought it was pure greed. Will not use this pub again.

Ordered BBQ chicken loaded fries and was served frozen chips not fries with frozen strips of chicken covered with cheese and a squirt of BBQ sauce. Husband had pie of the day, said the pie was nice but the gravy was lumpy and too thick won’t be going back there again

Visited first time after lock down (I believe it’s opened under new management) on a Saturday afternoon. Booked a table for food and glad we did as it was very busy. The service was slow but this was mentioned on our arrival as they were under staffed and didn’t predict how busy it would be. However, the atmosphere was fab (lively, sport on the TV and a range of music was been played) and at the time we hardly noticed the wait between drinks and food! We ordered three different meals (Yorkshire Pudding, Cheeseburger and chicken and cheese baguette) portions were huge (for £6.95 each) and delicious. Lager and cider were reasonably prices too. Hopefully the place gets a well needed refurb under new management as it is the only negative - but I appreciate the pub has just recently reopened and Rome wasn’t built in a day! We’ll definitely be back.
