Lush food, great choice of drinks, great atmosphere, fab music and all with amazing service! Well worth popping in and we will be back!

We stumbled upon this bar/restaurant while passing along Grey Street during our visit between Christmas and New Year in Newcastle. The outside menu seemed tasty, and the inside looked warm and welcoming. We decided to book a table for the following evening, and it didn't disappoint. We sat near the kitchen and could see the attention put into the food preparation, and once we tasted it, wow, we could tell the kitchen was producing quality food. We had opted for the small plates (Tapas). The nibbles of bread and olives came with a selection of cheeses and dips. The other pinxtos and gourmet plates were generously sized, with plenty of choices. The staff were amiable and professional, and we recommend Dacantus if you are in Newcastle.

We visited for lunch on a very cold day in the week before Christmas. It is a tapas menu, but not a traditional Spanish tapas menu. Many of the dishes we chose had some very inventive, seasonal twists. For example, turkey and cranberry, croquettes. We very much enjoyed all our food and the service was excellent.

We have never seen or tasted tapas like the food we were served. Good portions and amazingly tasty. Service was great. Ambience was fab. Definitely would go again.

We visited on Saturday. Was a lovely place and lovely staff, the only downside was the breakage on the accessible toilet. I felt uncomfortable and incredibly vulnerable, in 2022 having to ask to go to the toilet isnt good enough. Please fix.

Fantastic variety of tapes, beautifully cooked with well matched wine a total delight. The staff are very friendly and helpful, totally recommend,a must for food & drink lover's..🍹

It is located on the attractive street leading up to Grey’s Monument. It has outdoor seating at the front and the interior is characterful. They serve small plates and we took advantage of a lunch offer which was £16 for three dishes. All the dishes were excellent as was the service. We had a very enjoyable lunchtime.

This is our 4th visit In the last month and we are still knocked out by the excellent range of gins & the fabulous variety of cocktails, as well as the very friendly & helpful staff. We will be back totally recommend.

Popped into Dacantus for a few drinks with friends, haven't been in since before the pandemic started, and delighted it's still as awesome as ever! We got seats at the bar, and had some great drinks. 2 of our party are pregnant but there were lots of options for them, including some yummy alcohol free gin and mocktails. The rest of us had some lovely wine, some different gin and cocktails. Such a great atmosphere, and excellent service. Can't wait to go back.

Christmas menu is to die for, definitely recommend trying the prawns in blankets. Gins are delicious & service is always spot on.

An excellent selection of gins on the menu (although would love to see some more local ones stocked - Newcastle gin, steam punk, holy island, Alnwick, poetic license for example). Food was very good with a great range to choose from. All arriving beautifully presented and great service from the staff. We also had a bottle of cava which wasn’t the best (perhaps an additional option on the fizz would be great). Food wise, the tomato, guacamole and Brie bruschetta was great (although ours arrived without the guacamole. Not sure why…) and the king prawns were beautiful with a large portion provided too.

Haven’t been for a while and boy have I missed it. Two liquorice double gins went down a treat with potato bravas and chorizo. The stuffed chicken and pine nuts is a family favourite and was exquisite. Lovely ambience, service and staff. Perfecto

Enjoyed a wonderful night for dinner/ drinks for 6 people. Gin choice is endless….very knowledgeable staff. Thank you Jenny! Blood Orange Gin!! Food was fabulous….all dishes freshly cooked so arrived to table at intervals, as expected with authentic tapas dishes. Panko dates stuffed with Gorgonzola and walnuts was delicious. Service was excellent…Manager Becky exceptional …. Don’t miss this little gem of a restaurant!!

Delicious tapas, wine and a huge gin range. Food was lovely, the service was friendly and attentive. Just a shame we couldn’t stay for another drink beyond 10pm.

Louie en el bar fue extremadamente servicial y ofreció un gran servicio, recomendando la bruschetta de cerdo que disfrutamos inmensamente. El ambiente era romántico y relajado, tuvimos una velada realmente encantadora y estamos ansiosos por volver para probar más del increíble menú.

Cenamos aquí el sábado por la noche y fue una primera comida perfecta después del cierre. Reservamos en el último minuto y nos informaron que tendríamos nuestra mesa durante una hora, lo cual estuvo absolutamente bien para nosotros, pero en la noche el personal logró reorganizar nuestra reserva, lo que nos permitió una hora extra para cenar. La comida era increíble (como siempre) pero el personal fue muy atento, tenían todo el equipo de protección personal apropiado y fueron muy profesionales.

If you only Vist one Gin Bar in Newcastle make it Dacantus it has a great & varied selection of world class Gins, fantastic,Friendly & helpful staff.tottaly recommended

We chanced upon this place on Saturday night with no reservation. The tables were fully booked but the staff said we could sit and eat at the bar, which we were happy to do. Shared a few dishes off the menu, not authentic Spanish cuisine by any means but it was tasty, friendly service and a pleasant atmosphere.

It's all about the gin here. Choice of 120 or so I think! (Other drinks and tapas are available.) Well worth a visit if you fancy a buzzy and vibrant gin bar

We arrived to be greeted by a really friendly barman and took a seat in a bar with a nice atmosphere, even on a quiet Sunday early evening. Nice touch of free tapas with our drink which was very much traditional Spanish. What followed with our food subsequently was very far from the Spanish tapas as advertised on the door. The menu advertised Gourmet tapas. Spanish tapas and what is on offer were not quite aligned. Our bruschetta for instance is hardly Spanish tapas. The other tapas we ordered were disappointing and not the slightest bit authentic. Overall the staff are lovely, the bar atmosphere nice and we would return for a drink but eat somewhere else before hand.

Lovely little informal tapas restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. Well informed waiting staff who are well versed on their extensive menu. An extra special touch is the free taster tapas given on arrival with your chosen drink. Definitely will be going again.

Every time we come here we always get fab service. I like to try new gins and the staff have patients of saints because am fussy. I can never decide, but tbf there is a lot to choose from! They ask me what I like and they make whatever they think, and ive not been disappointed yet!! We have always getting a sample of tapas, we have loved every sample they have brought us. Every time we’ve came here the place has always been clean & tidy.

The NE1 Restaurant Week this January at Dacantus, Grey Street, was an opportunity to taste six of the new dishes on their new tapas menu. The Tasting Menu was based on two people sharing @£15 per person.The food was delicious and it was served at a leisurely pace so that there was time to appreciate each of the six courses. At each stage the components of dish were described. The restaurant was quiet in the early afternoon when we dined there but the décor, service and food combined to give a fantastic dining experience. We enjoyed the dining experience so much that we cheekily asked if we could return with our neighbours the following week so they too could try the “tasting menu”. The manager kindly agreed to this cheeky request and he arranged for a slightly different tasting menu for the four of us. On this occasion there were four extremely satisfied customers who left after two hours of first class dining and service. If they are not too busy then Dacantus might be prepared to repeat this “tasting menu” for you if a booking request is made.

Visited in Dec 2019 with friends for cocktails and a few bits of food. When we walked in I noticed the place stank like bad eggs. After a few mins the whole group of friends were talking about it and so we (along with another table) decided to go elsewhere as the smell was so overly powering. I wouldn't rush back. Surely the staff noticed the smell too.

Visited this place last Saturday, this is not a restaurant, expensive for what you get. Food was tasty but nothing special and wouldn’t consider it a meal.

Fantastic selection of gin. 128 on the menu!!!! Staff were very knowledgeable and drinks were expertly made, served in lovely large glasses as well Only popped in for a quick drink but food looked delicious so definitely be back to try that next time

Had amazing food and given we had little time provided with great speed and service. Truly some of the best food we’ve had in Ages. We’ll be back there ASAP - even without the theatre. Totally recommend it. Eric

Visited Dacantus for a quick meal before a show in Newcastle. Had gin and Tapas, which was very tasty - the staff were fantastic, especially Louis and Mal who really looked after us. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a smaller venue to have a great night!

What can I say? I can’t fault this place at all. Very attentive staff, beautiful drinks and mouthwatering food.

My wife and I visited here on our anniversary for lunch, we love it here and are always impressed with the great Spanish staff, friendly atmosphere, superb food and vast gluten free options. Great place, good value and a favourite of ours.

Visiting Newcastle for the weekend, we looked to TA for advice on where to eat. Visited at lunchtime to suss it out. Very friendly, attentive service offering great advice on what to select from the menu. Prawns pil pil were outstanding. So good we returned for dinner. All staff very knowledgeable and welcoming, but especially our Yorkshire waiter. Will definitely return when we come back to Newcastle.

In the day Decanthus is lovely for Coffee especially on a nice day as you can sit outside they present you with Tapas which is a lovely touch I intend to have lunch here next time I am visiting as the Tapas is delicious then in the evening the selection of Gins is great as are the staff I had a glass of Moet Champayne for £8.50 which I think is a very fair price

Sat at an outside table on my first night in Newcastle, having just arrived that day from the US West Coast and drank beer and ate great tapas while watching the Saturday night club crowd parade by. Great food, and great service by Azz, my server. Highly recommend!

Having drank at Dacantus numerous times I’ve the last few years but never eaten there we decided to rectify this and book a table for a Friday night. Due to mobility issues we asked for a lower table then the usual high bar tables they have and the restaurant said this wasn’t a problem and was all set up when we arrived which was much appreciated.

I had some time to kill in Newcastle before a business meeting so popped in (on my lonesome) for a cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised to received a complimentary tapas dish with my drink. I was a bit peckish but didn’t think I had time to order food. Both arrived quickly and the dish (meatball and potatoes in a Mediterranean sauce) was really tasty. I’d definitely go back there for food. The waiter was super friendly and welcoming, very smiley and helpful. The bar/dining area and toilets were both clean and stylish. The bill was less than £3, so with the tapas dish this was a bargain! I’d definitely recommend it.

We were shopping in town & wanted to get some lunch. We were walking past & saw there was a free table, so went in. I’m so pleased we did. The food was delicious, we both had the set menu. I was expecting small portions, but they certainly weren’t. Whilst we were waiting for our meal we were give free tapas & it was yummy. I noticed they did this with other customers who were in for drinks. The white Rioja I had was very good & the service from the staff first class. The other thing that impressed me was how clean & smart the toilets are. We’ll definitely go back when next in town, it was such a good meal.

Visited Newcastle to see the Bodyguard

From the second we walked in we could see that the 1 member of staff that was on was pretty busy but he still took the time to greet us and welcome us. We later found out he was called Shaun. His service was impeccable and his gin knowledge was second to none. I would recommend this place simply based on their amazing gin menu, which offers something for every gin lover, but the service is what takes this place to the next level. It is small and intimate and staff treat you as if you are the only customers there. If you have the chance, you must go!!

We went here on Saturday for drinks and an anniversary meal . We regularly go here for drinks ( the most amazing gins served here ) but have never eaten here before .

I never knew there were so many different gins and so many different tonics. The number of different combinations one can have is mind boggling. It was quite quiet mid afternoon so the barman had time to come and talk to us personally to advise us of the different combos. A brilliant experience on a wet Friday afternoon

What a lovely place, we were served at the table and chose from a drinks menu which had more flavoured gin that you shake a stick at.

Group of Four people we had a lovely meal and where looked after by Becky who helped us choose food and a couple of bottles of nice Tempranillo wine and gins. Lovely gluten free cheesecake for pudding ! Food was excellent will definitely visit again.

6 of us went here for our gin and tonics on Saturday afternoon. We really love it in here, good atmosphere great gin menu and of course your complimentary tapa. Always good here.

Called on speck with 3 friends. There was no seats available as very busy Saturday (7.30 ish) but as we were leaving 3 ladies offered their seats as they were about to leave. We were well pleased. Once seated the waiter explained about the drinks menu which is all we wanted. Too many gins to choose from so difficult choice but once received we all enjoyed them and glasses they were served in were lovely. The waiter had only been there a couple of days but he was so friendly and pleasant and anything he was unsure of he asked a colleague. Enjoyed the company, drinks and the bar in general. In all a lovely experience. However on reading other reviews we didn't get any complimentary tapas......... but we had just eaten ..........so maybe next time....... as I would visit again.

Called in with family who were up visiting in the area. Had a great time, excellent service and the tapas with your drinks is a great plus. Highly recommended

First time eating at Decantus and I will absolutely return based on the service, food quality and value for money.

We chose this restaurant because of Meerkat meals. Once we paid we were told they do not accept this offer despite participating on the website. For a full price meal the food here is disappointing and overpriced, service is also poor compare to other restaurants on Grey Street. St Vincent on the quayside is a far better choice for similar cuisine.

Visited here last night with friends for a meal and a few drinks. Wine was poor quality and not cold and that was the best bit. The food.....wow it was bad. I ordered two starters as lighter bites, the pate which was absolutely disgusting and smelled like feet - was totally inedible. And the prawns which at £13 were frozen and reheated with burnt garlic and oil poured on top. To be fair the waiter understood when I explained how shocking the food was and he removed it from the bill. A few others had the squid which was again frozen, reheated and dripping in the same oil as the prawns. I rarely complain in a restaurant but this place was something else, such a shame as the location is great but I’ll never return here and neither will my fellow diners.

Been here a few times and love the wine and tapas. Unfortunately we called in on Monday tea time .I was driving so asked for coffee . I watched the guy make an instant coffee which was luke warm when it came. Sent it back and said it was cold and why was the coffee machine not working .I don't know was the reply .he then took the cup of cold coffee and put it in the microwave. At this point I told him not to bother as I am not paying for instant coffee from the microwave .No apologies nothing except a dirty look .At this point we walked out and went somewhere else .will go back for wine but never again for coffee.

My partner and I booked a table in this busy (Saturday evening) bar/restuarant. When we arrived about a hour early it was packed and had a great atmosphere. I mentioned to a member of staff about or booking and was told, no problem, our table would be ready. Indeed it was ready EXACTLY at the time we booked for even thought place was bursting with people. They had marked our table as reserved for our booing time.

We booked this for my husbands birthday so there was 4 of us. We were greeted by Shaun (i think thats correct? we did have alot of gin to drink lol) who explained he would be teaching us about gin. We went for the 5 gin experience and it was actually really good. Shaun let us sample different types of gins and taught us how to create such different flavours by adding the simplest things. Shaun joined us in the gin drinking so that made it even more fun. He was really clued up on the history of gin and we all found it interesting. We were given a couple of complimentary tapas and a complimentary g&t; at the end. We did feel a bit light headed by the end of the session lol.

Last restaurant week I went to a chain down the street from Dacantus and was really disappointed. Calling in to Dacantus for a drink on the way home, we bumped into friends eating there. It looked great. This week I booked to come with friends who hadn't been before. We ate from the restaurant week menu. It was a lovely experience. Great, friendly service. Delicious food (especially the prawns pil pil and the cheesecake). Great menu of gins carefully prepared and put together. Even for non-drinkers, a great selection of tonics. Try hibiscus!

Not somewhere id' go for food, as it's very small with high tables and bar stools, but a lovely bar to stop for a drink and nibbles

I visited with friends for a girly catch up before Christmas. The food was great but the service was really bizarre. Firstly, they weren't rushed off their feet and yet everything seemed to take absolutely ages. When asked if they had cranberry juice, the waitress didn't know. She checked and they didn't so we asked for Elderflower and soda - didn't have that either (bit strange for a well stocked, modern gin bar.) When asked about other things, she didn't know either - her product knowledge was lacking somewhat. Between us, we had the steak, chicken stuffed with nuts and dates, lamb casserole and sea bass. All clean plates. The food was fresh, tasty and well presented. The strange and slow service didn't ruin the evening as we enjoyed each other's company but might make me think twice about going again as there are so many great offerings nearby.

Weve been to Dacantus a few times now but after our latest trip I had to write a review. Called in on New Years Eve afternoon supposedly just for a swift gin with the Mrs and another couple and were lucky enough to time it just right to get a table, ordered the gins (superb as usual) served by a very pleasant and knowledgeable lady who helped our friends to pick a drink as they were new to the place. We sat and enjoyed the great atmosphere and were brought some very nice complimentary tapas so decided to stay for another and order some food.

Went to this restaurant in between Christmas and new year as we had a taste card which meant we got 2 for the price of 1. The food was absolutely delicious had fillet steak with chips and veg and couldn’t fault it at all. The staff were incredibly friendly and I loved the garnishes the drinks were served with. Will definitely be back!

We were given a voucher for the gin tasting experience, Sean was really friendly and very knowledgeable. Lots of information to take in but very useful and some great gin tastes. We then had dinner and the food was just as good as the gin, a great day had by all.

This was our first visit to Decantus, but won't be the last. Bar was nice and quiet (it was a Tuesday evening) and the gin and tonics were delicious. The waitress was really friendly and attentive and also knew her stuff in relation to G&T; recommendations. Complimentary tapas is a nice touch too.

Awful - We went for a meal here and as we were sat in the bar area, other people were also using our table as a place to stand and socialise, it was dreadful. My husband and I couldn't have a conversation due to the people around us sharing our table. At one point the waiters couldn't get to our table to clear it. The prices are extortionate and the food wasn't anything special. I will never go back here.

Teníamos hambre pero no tanto que necesitábamos una comida completa. Dacantus nos ofreció una buena variedad de opciones en cuanto a tapas (grandes porciones) y vino. El personal fue muy útil al hablarnos a través del menú y lo que podría ser mejor para nosotros. Teníamos 3 tapas, todas muy buenas. También tuve un vino de Argentina - excelente.

We were recommended this bar so my friend and I found it. Only a small gin bar down from the theatre royal past Zzizzi’s. Quiet when we arrived at about 1 pm. We didn’t know it was a Gin bar which pleased me but my friend quickly became a convert. The tall stools were made of metal so not very comfortable but the drinks were fantastic. I stuck with my favourite Tankuerey 10 x2 and my friend had a drink with gin and coriander which she said was ok and her second gin was with orange and ginger which she loved. We had a chicken in tomato sauce tapas and a vegetarian aubergine slice which was tasty. We ordered wedges with aoli which was beautiful and so tasty. Our second complimentary tapas was again a wedge with aoli but unfortunately the potatoes weren’t cooked through. Apart from that it was so interesting to watch the various drinks being made. When your visit , which I hope you will, be sure to ask for your tapas.

Dropped in here for a drink. Wasn’t sure what to expect because I don’t drink gin and it’s a gin bar but anyway my husband wanted to go. What a surprise they had Rioja perfect, reasonable priced and was pretty good. We also decided to order the 2 course set lunch (£12) between us because we had dinner reservations somewhere else later on so didn’t want too much. Opted for the pork and then the paella. First an appetiser was brought which was a really nice touch and tasted really good! Then our meal was brought swiftly after. The flavours were really good and authentic and there was plenty! Overall a really tasty meal in a relaxed atmosphere. It was extremely good value and I would recommend in fact I have been raving about it all week! Will definitely be back.

Just love going here when in Newcastle. Brilliant atmosphere and staff who help you when selecting your gins. A magnificent choice of gins. Complimentary tapas also very good. A must do in NewcastleuponTyne. See you again soon!

My wife and I were lucky enough to find this Spanish restaurant while on a day out in Newcastle. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We are going to Almeria in Spain shortly and this was a perfect appetizer to our break. We will definitely return the next time we're in Newcastle.

If you’re into gins... and everyone seems to be at the moment. This is the place to go.

This gin bar has a great varied menu of gins and flavours. Beth really added to the experience with her questions of us and helped pick some great tasting drinks. We were given a small tapas of chicken chilli which was very good. A nice feeling in the place helped this be a nice start to an evening out with my wife. Service 5, value and tapas a four.

Wow...brilliant and knowledgeable service, amazing collection of gins. Good food. With over 120 gins and complimenting tonics on the menu and with 400 gins in stock, you’re sure to be pleased with the gins on offer. We will be back, was a great night out

Booked for a Saturday night before Theatre, not realising it was Restaurant Week. Arrived early and very busy. Table in the window was reserved for us from 6 pm great place to watch world go by. Got a drink and table quickly turned over for us. The three of us decided to order from the special 3 course restaurant week menu for an unbelievable £15. Staff were great attentive and chatty without being overly so. When ordering a drink you get a free tapas dish. We got potato and chicken with crispy crouton. I ordered the salad, my husband the prawn pil pil. Our other diner decided to just have main and desert. Food came quickly and presented perfectly. Small salad included grapes and walnuts. The prawn pil pil came with artichoke and a lot of garlic. Both good. My husband and myself ordered the hake and mother in law the chicken. All 3 came presented beautifully, not huge portions , but perfect size for 3 courses and the price. Three empty plates and all enjoyed it. Desert was warm apple pie and ice cream and a passion fruit cheesecake. Again no complaints, all washed down with a couple of drinks.

It is a while since I visited Dacantus but everything is till in excellent order. We had the Newcastle Restaurant Week Menu where you have limited choice but get three courses for £15. The food and service were excellent as they were on previous visits. If you like Spanish style food I reckon this is the best place in Newcastle.
