Visited with another family for Sunday lunch - we were staying at a campsite up the valley. This is a “proper” British pub - lovely old building, welcoming atmosphere, decent ales, and hearty, well cooked food. With three 13 year olds in tow, we asked whether the kids portions would be suitable - they definitely were. Will be coming back.

We spent three nights near Pontfadog in late October 2019 while on vacation from the US, and spent two of those evenings enjoying dinner at The Swan. If we lived around here, we would gladly join the ranks of the obvious regulars that inhabit the bar area. Even as visitors, we were warmly welcomed. The bar isn't huge but is well provisioned. There was an adequate selection of beers and ales on tap, including several local and regional choices. The wine list also focused on quality and value rather than extensive selections. The food choices ranged from your pub classics like fish and chips and shepherd's pie, but also included a variety of special dishes. Everything we tried was spectacular, but the absolute highlight of our meals there were the pies. There is always a pie on the menu, but what's in the pie changes week to week. On the night, the pie was smoked pheasant and leeks. Absolutely amazing! A generous serving, it still left room for a bit of sticky toffee pudding with custard. Rich and moist and swimming in a bath of caramel and custard, astonishingly good. A group of ladies at the next table were watching our pudding come to the table, and were trying to be inconspicuous as the watched and listened to us rhapsodize over the first few bites. But I noticed that several of them also ordered the pudding! This is a wonderful little place, where even complete strangers feel like locals. The kind of place where people talk to each other from table to table. The kind of place I wish we had around the corner from our home here in the US.

We ate hear on one of the nights we stayed at the Mulberry Inn about 20 minutes walk away. We had had a good day on the hills around the area and had earned a hearty meal. This pub did not disappoint. The food is good honest pub grub. With well cooked very generous portions and a varied menu. The atmosphere was busy and the staff were very friendly despite being very busy. For a starter we shared the daily special main which was a collection of battered King Prawn, scampi, squid rings etc on a bed of courgette. It sounded more exciting on blackboard but was perfectly fine. For mains my wife had fish and chips with mushy peas which she said was very good. Made with good quality fish that was well cooked. I had a Steak and Kidney pie with chips and peas which should have fed 2 and could feed 4 at a push but I ate the lot myself. :) After that neither of us had room for pudding. We had a nice bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blancthat was very reasonably priced.

We booked a table for the New Year’s Eve dinners, we were served Fantastic food and drinks, very very tasty and presented lovely. The restaurant was busy and has a good atmosphere. I would recommend to anyone in the area. The bar has an open fire and a snug, which was warm and cosy.

Enjoyed a family meal here on a Tuesday evening. Dogs are permitted outside and in the bar (but, appropriately, not in the restaurant area). Food was well cooked, significantly exceeding our expectations of a pub-menu, with good use of local produce: four empty plates. Decent choice of real ales. The pub itself is in a small village and the owners, who have taken it on in the last year, are to be commended for their endeavours and enterprise; there are clear signs of the “work-in-progress” and they deserve good wishes as they continue renovations.

Great food with excellent service. A very varied menu, plus a board of specials. Many meals use locally grown ingredients, including herbs and veggies. A good range of quality wines by the glass and, obviously, by the bottle. Superb dessert selections, again including locally grown fruit.

If you are in this area, I would thoroughly recommend a visit here. We, a family of 5, absolutely loved the food. Would recommend the mushroom and Shropshire blue starter, soup, the fish and chips, steak and ale pie. Local pub, lovely people.

Six of us called in while on a narrow boat holiday having been there many years ago. Was good years ago but has got better. Place was very clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. Staff were very attentive and helpful and the food was delicious. Not the cheapest establishment we've been to (but not the dearest either) but you certainly get what you pay for. All six of us made different choices for the main course and all six of us enjoyed our meals. My wife, who has difficulty with her swallow asked for extra sauce to go with the chicken dish and she was more than adequately provided for. Would definitely go there again if in the area.

Very friendly proper pub; lovely people and quiz very good fun! A supper was provided which would have been excellent if we'd known it really was a proper supper not just a few sandwiches! It did say so so we should have trusted! Anyway our supper beforehand was superb, fish finger sandwiches advertised as a light bite but were substantial...I had chicken with barbecue sauce and cheese delicious and all the food looked excellent and was well reviewed by all our group. A definite recommendation for anyone near the Ceiriog valley, Chirk or even Oswestry! A brilliant proper pub!

The Swan changed hands a couple of months ago and if you measured the place by popularity alone it's good. But you don't need to, I don't think you'll only go there once as the menu is varied, imaginative and really well priced. This is not pub food but it is excellent. I am slowly working my way through the menu and have not been disappointed yet. The burger I tried stands out as the best I have tried and the portion nearly defeated me but I was not going to miss out and left the delicious chips instead. With hindsight I didn't title this correctly, I should have made it clear that the Cygnet has developed into a magnificent Swan.

My wife and I stopped over for food last night and was very impressed by the food, service and friendly staff. It’s a traditional pub that is very cosy with plenty of the original character and characters at the bar. As you walk in there is an open fire in the center of the bar area which will be great on a cold winter’s day, plenty of seating around. Almost tucked away behind the fire there is a very comfy looking leather sofa. The dining area next to the bar is very clean and has been updated. There is a good selection of food on the menu for both adults and children Highly recommend the Swan, Inn and will we will definitely being returning.

We stayed in Pontfadog for 1 week and visited The Swan twice. Once for a beer whilst on a walk and the second time for Breakfast. We asked if they did breakfast only to be told they only do this on a Sunday and it was a Monday we wanted to have it. Thankfully after asking the staff member asked the owner who said they would be prepared to open for breakfast ( for us ) on Monday morning if we gave a small deposit! This was great for us as they were so accommodating and I couldn't fault the food for £6.50 each.

Moved back to Whitchurch recently thought we would give it a try, Well driving up the drive we wasn't sure it was open no lights on the long driveway The table we sat at needed wiping the waitress didn't even notice it I had the burger which I must admit it was really really nice and at 13 quid was very reasonable My wife had the salmon which was a massive let down nearly 17 quid a small piece of salmon with potatoes and veg (which was about 5 pieces of broccoli and nothing else ) As for the drinks very expensive

We tried a selection of products from here including a sausage roll, large oggie and a pie. All were excellent, pastry and filling alike and good value, especially as we bought multiple items for which a discount is offered. Recommended
