A first class meal, without blaring music, you could really relax and enjoy the conversation . We both chose the steak and it was as good as any I have ever eaten.

The menu was very retro (70s) with the likes of prawn cocktail or melon to start. The food was better than I thought. The food portions were slightly smaller than average. The restaurant decor looked like something pre-60s. The waiters were friendly and pretty efficient. I'm glad I came to experience the restaurant but not one I'll rush back to

We were on a weeks holiday and this restaurant was recommended. They opened the restaurant , as it was my birthday , service 100%. Our waiter was so polite helpfull and made up feel so welcome. Food excellent. Wish we had found this at the start of the week and definitely would have stayed at the hotel , the Grange. Next time in Newark booking into the Grange and using their on site cutlers restaurant

Visited with friends to restaurant not hotel. Car park was fairly full but very few people in the bar or restaurant. The establishment is very neat and tidy. Bar area was comfortable and service was ok. The restaurant itself is like stepping back in time to the late 50's, early 60's. Service from the young Hungarian waiter was pleasant and efficient. The older couple also serving I guess must be the owners who were pleasant enough but not over welcoming. The real let down though was the food which was the epitome of bland. Everything was tasteless. Our starter of salmon fish cakes was accompanied by allegedly a sweet chilli sauce. I have never seen a bright pink chilli sauce before- I think it was prawn cocktail sauce that had maybe seen sight of a chili flake but just no taste. The fishcake itself was tiny and there really should have been 2. The main courses followed in a similar vein, unappealing and tasteless. The worst pork fillet ever seen swimming in what looked like the tomato soup that Julie Waters served up !!. The frangipani dessert was stale and the cheese board was uninspired. In essence this is the sort of food that may be good for convalescent homes but not in a what looks like a nice comfortable hotel. Frankly if I had not recieved the 25% discount through the Gourmet Society I would have complained but chose not to do so. The bill was not expensive, just not value for money. I don't like giving negative reviews and I'm sure with some tweaks this place could be great.

We took our Grandmother here for Sunday Lunch at approximately £17 per head it's not one of the cheaper places to eat Sunday lunch but it was much better than your average car very, the menu choices were varied with simple flavours and the special touches that good restaurants add, like a very good chutney with the pate starter and slivers of fresh fruit with an exceptionally good creme brûlée. I had baked supreme of chicken with wild mushroom sauce and it was exquisite, beautifully tender and great flavour, it was accompanied by a platter of fresh vegetables for the table which included the type of roast potatoes you wish you could make at home (something a lot of restaurants struggle to get right) my husband had the beef which he said was very tender with delicious gravy. What made this place stand out for me was just how well they treated our Grandmother, she's been before and they not only remembered her name but remembered what she'd eaten at her previous visit, they remembered how she liked her food portioned and showed genuine interest and sense of humour in chatting with her. I can't distinguish one member of staff because every person we came across treated her the same, which for someone who now doesn't get out very much is priceless. I have no doubt in my mind where we will take her next time we go, so if you want a decent meal and the kind of service that you can't pay for then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place.

Stayed one night whilst meeting friends for dinner. The hotel is great , nice rooms with very comfy beds and very pleasant staff. We were the only people in the very cosy restaurant on a Wednesday evening although some people were eating in the bar. The food was fine , not WOW but OK .My only criticism is that it is a very limited menu .Two beef dishes. a pork dish , the obligatory sea bass , a chicken salad and two vegetarian dishes . If you have the chance stay over and have the breakfast. It is super , freshly coked and fried bread as it should be . we will be back

Celebrating my sister and brother in laws Golden Anniversary, just a small party of nine, nice and quiet, a typical hotel restaurant, the service was calm and expertly done, the tables laid beautifully, the food was very good, obvious as every plate went back empty, the sweets were perfect, more empty plates, it was nice to eat fresh veg that was cooked just right and not raw, as is with many places these days. And the last word goes to the 'Ladies Room' immaculate with lovely decor and nicely perfumed.

A gem of a place in this historic market town. The ambience is of a quiet club and the dining area genteel with class. The secret garden is a Victorian/ Edwardian sanctuary - a perfect place for tea or Pimms. The main a la carte meals themselves were served efficiently and with deference and decorum by the two pleasantly attentive (and attractive) Vincze brothers. The fayre was rated on average 7.5 out of 10 by the dozen of us attending. Definitely a wonderful relaxing and charming watering hole with that someone special - one day hope to try the guest rooms too in in this handsome building. Thank you Tom and Sandra Carr (Directors) for giving Newark-on-Trent a somewhat prestigious place to dine with style. Peter from Pink Diners Club

What a lovely restaurant, great, friendly staff, service was excellent. The meal though, was expensive and pretty mediocre: On the plus side, the steak was cooked perfectly, and was nicely tender, although unfortunately a generous peppering detracted from the taste somewhat. The chips (considering this main course cost more than £16) we're bog standard frozen 'pub' chips - thee were a lot of them, but I would have been much happier with fewer 'proper' chips. The fish cake was rather oily and soggy. Overall the servings were very generous, which meant that I had rather a bad case of indigestion for several hours ! I take some responsibility for that, though.

Visited for Sunday lunch, which was ok.The meat was well cooked and the Yorkshire pudding was excellent, just wished there was a bit more on the plate for the money.Bit of a sombre atmosphere like there was a funeral going on but over all ok.

only visited this hotel for a meal it looked very smart. All the staff were very helpful and the food was brilliant - we had booked for a wedding anniversary and they made us feel very special. We started in the very smart bar area where our orders were taken and were shown through to our table when the starters were ready. Bit expensive but well worth the cost. They also do afternoon tea in their garden and we will return to try this out at some point.
