Cup Tea Rooms in Glasgow City

A very disappointing visit to Cup. We had not been for some time however things have changed for the worse. For a start, no cup cakes! On ordering a mozzarella and tomato panini I was served what looked like a morning roll. Not something you could share and certainly not worth £11. The only highlight was the Victoria sponge cake. However this was brought to us before our main plates were taken away and we waited over 20 minutes for the accompanying pot of tea after chasing this up. There seemed to be plenty of staff so why the slow service. Won’t be back nor the folk we tell.

A small portion for the price however, the food was tasty. Product unavailability and service issues negatively affected our overall experience, sadly.

My daughter bought a voucher from itison for afternoon tea for two. She called to book and said it was an itison voucher. She called again to rearrange booking and said again that it was an itison voucher. We arrived and showed the voucher and were seated. Then another member of staff came over and said they were not accepting the voucher. My daughter told them that twice she had said it was a voucher and she didn’t understand what was wrong. The manager then came over and explained that they were under new owners and not accepting the voucher. This all happened in front of other diners and we then had to leave. We have since found out that cup in merchant city are accepting the vouchers however it ruined our afternoon out. Very disappointed and won’t return.

We were a little early for our booking. The chef let us in, the manager was very unprofessional and didn’t really want us in the restaurant. We walked out because he made us feel uncomfortable. We would never return, and this would have been our third time.

The restaurant had been booked several months in advance, so they know we were coming. The organiser of the group had even phoned that afternoon to confirm everything. When everyone arrived we were lead downstairs to the dark dingy basement, which was cold. We waited over an hour and no food had arrived. The Duty Manager then told us they only had 3 vegan afternoon teas left, and offered us a ciabatta instead. Not in keeping with what we had expected. Given the duty manager didn’t appear until after 3.30pm, when it was too late to make arrangements for a large group to go elsewhere We have raised a complaint with the restaurant, as 'Sorry' isn’t good enough. I hope this matter will be resolved, the least they can do is offer a full complimentary afternoon tea, as compensation.

What a lovely tea room and restaurant just a few minutes from the station and town centre. The food was fantastic (we both had eggs Benedict and the Hollandaise was perfect) coffees were great and the staff were really helpful. The venue itself was amazing, beautifully tiled throughout and it was like stepping back in time. I will definitely go again. Great food,service, venue and price.

We went with an itison voucher. Waited for 20 minutes before even receiving water or our hot drink order. Food was not a patch on previous visits and some wasn’t what it was meant to be. My mum emailed and they advised it’s not owned by cup anymore but Is allowed to trade as cup during transition period. Wouldn’t have bought a voucher if we knew this!! Would advise to avoid and go to merchant city venue instead

I went with my son on the 3rd of January, we did not have a voucher so paid full price for the afternoon tea. To be clear everything we had was edible, but it wasnt what the menu told you, you would be getting. So i would say its worth it if you have a voucher but full price, you can get a better afternoon tea elsewhere. I think it started badly though with "what tea would you like?" Masala Chai please, sorry we dont have that, OK chocolate chai please, sorry we dont have that, OK, coconut cream please, sorry we dont have that. guess I'm having breakfast tea then. Now I did say to the staff it was a poor show that a tea room ran out of 3 popular teas but christmas and deliveries were blamed. Which I just dont buy, if you are a tea room, and know that on the 3rd of January you re-open and are full and people will expect tea, then your ordering has gone wrong. Also there is a 2nd cups in glasgow, surely you get some from them, if they have ran out then you need to question your ordering process. Additionally we went for orange juice in the absence of one of the teas, but you get charged for that Savouries were all nice, similar standard to whata you would make at home. There was no stand out flavours, all perfectly edible. Clotted cream was cream, the red velvet cupcake was just a buttercream cupcake that was pink, the passion fruit white chocolate choux bun was just a profiterole wtih dark chocolate. I just whished on the menu they had put the reality of what you were getting as it was edible just you end up disappointed as it doesnt meet expectations they have set. also for those like me who get cold easier, take an extra layer, its not the warmest place.

Went for afternoon tea. We have been there a few times before and loved it but standards have slipped. Food was not great. And at 25+ GBP per person I expected much better. Service was good and the staff was nice, but sandwiches were poor, only one measly slice of beef in a roll and nothing else (no salad!), profiterole tasted like the cream had turned in them, not sure what was served with the scones but it was not proper clotted cream. Cupcake was dry. Tea selection was shorter than last time and 2 were not available. My daughter (9) did not touch half the sweets on her children afternoon tea and she has a very sweet tooth and loves all desserts. She said everything tasted “not good”. That says a lot. Shame as we like the place and staff was nice but the food left a lot to be desired.

There was nothing about the food or tea that was good. Too much to put in here about the experience which was an end to my future daughter in laws hen weekend. The girl who seemed to be in charge had an awful attitude too. She tried to redeem herself by offering the bride to be a bottle of Prosecco. It wasn’t until we left that the rest of the party mentioned their issues which I wish we’d addressed at the time. At average £20 per head for a breakfast it should have been perfect. I was since contacted by the company saying they had sold that particular venue and moved their staff to the other one. Cop out I think. Do not recommend!

Disappointing Itison brunch deal. No butter with the very dry scones and when it was eventually brought to table it was too cold to spread. One roll had some kind of avocado paste and very fatty bacon. Vegetarian option was slightly better. Pastries were poor and industrial. I’ve had this deal before and it used to be great. Saving grace was the wonderful waitress who couldn’t have been more attentive but food was a real let down.

Whilst walking round the soggy streets, looking for a nice place for a cuppa that wasn’t Starbucks, we came upon this lovely place. Stunning interior and a wee slice of class and cheer in the sad looking part of city that Glasgow has become. Lovely staff and delicious food. Reasonable priced. Definitely be back.

Booked afternoon tea for my mums 86 birthday. Mum has a dairy allergy, but staff were very keen to talk to my mum and provide a selection that suited her, and she got a beautiful afternoon tea selection.
