Cup Merchant City in Glasgow City

Merchant City Gin 71 is CLOSED permanently. Their website is still accepting reservations and will accept your credit card details as a no show guarantee against reservation.

Booked an afternoon tea at Cup Merchant City for my wife and me. This was to use a voucher given to her by her aunt. My wife had had trouble getting the online system to recognise the voucher number and was told by the people at Cup Renfield Street that they were not honouring Merchant City vouchers. I made the booking for 18 July and sent in an email request for clarification about the voucher. No response. The day before the booking I received a confirmation email. So far so good. So on the 18th my wife and I make our way to Merchant City. The shop is closed. No sign explaining why. Check the website Merchant City location is permanently closed. Not in a very good mood we hike over to Renfield Street to be told Merchant City location closed in December after selling the Renfield location to other people entirely and not paying the new owners back for any Cup vouchers that Merchant City had collected the money for. So Renfield Street takes the blame while Merchant City takes the money. I’m told the Merchant City owner owns other properties near the dearly departed Cup MC. Based on our experience, I’d keep a close eye on your wallet if you go into one. I’d give Cup Merchant City 0/5 (or less) if I could.

We had an Itison voucher for afternoon tea, we had booked weeks ago for a date that suited us, but the day before going, in the morning got email from them saying looking forward to seeing us and later same day someone from Cup phoned saying they were cancelling our booking due to staffing issues. I asked what happens now to be told bluntly either book for another date or contact Itison for refund, due to holidays and work commitments and voucher expiring soon we couldn’t book another date so will have to get refund. Very disappointed in Cup’s lack of customer service

We have been going to Cup since it was around on Byres Road and have always loved visiting when in Glasgow. Booked a morning breakfast for my wife and I while in Glasgow. It took 30min to be asked what we wanted to drink and most teas and even sparkling water were not available. 20min later we finally got asked what we wanted to eat. When the food turned up over an hour after we arrived, my wife's gluten free food clearly had regular food mixed in which she couldn't eat. Staff clearly were not attentive and the food was below expectation. We feel really disappointed by this experience as have always loved Cup. I see a huge change from the old Cup and feel a sense of sadness at its downfall. I would advise staying clear of Cup Glasgow especially if you have allergies.

Arrived yesterday found ideal table asked for 2 wines to be told it was table service outside place was strongly quiet compared to everywhere else went outside to be greeted by an extremely rude waitress who told me half an hour wait to be served when asked why was abruptly told its just me seeing the place was very quiet a group of guys came in to be told the same thing couple sitting down had watched this and said they couldn't believe what was happening , once again asked if we could get drinks from bar to be told also half hour wait we left in disgust iam sure management wouldn't be happy at that rude waitress chasing everyone away will never be back

I had an incredibly disappointing experience. Despite it being a busy Saturday, the service was abysmally slow. It took over an hour to get just two pints of beer. What made the situation even more frustrating was the sight of a manager sitting inside on a laptop, seemingly indifferent to the chaos unfolding around him (short man, dark hair, dark short beard wearing a blue stripped shirt) The ONE staff member appeared overwhelmed and unorganized, and the lack of management oversight was glaringly evident. For a place that's presumably prepared for weekend crowds, this level of inefficiency is unacceptable, the place wasn’t even close to half full. I would not recommend Gin71 even if you’re dying of thirst as you’ll probably end up dead. There are plenty of other establishments in the area that handle busy nights far better. At

I received 2 x 40.00 gift vouchers for the Gin Tasting months ago. Not been able to use yet as website always says "no events at moment, check again soon". I wonder how many 40.00 vouchers they sell are never redeemed?? Certainly wouldn't recommend buying these as a gift, bit of a rip off really. Website really not clear that the Gin Tastings are few and far between. Not to be confused with the Gin Spa which is a fabulous business and couldn't be more helpful!

Annoyed with poor greeting: Gave waitress my name and booking time and the instantly told I must have made a booking with the other Gin71@Renfield Street. I felt a little bit panicked cause I thought I had mis-booked for our group of 5. I had to retrieve my confirmation email and prove I made this bday booking (correctly) 2 weeks ago. No reason or apology given that the error was on their part. Delay in bill: Asked for the bill. Noticed we had waited an unusual amount of time. Waitress came over and asked us to re-confirm our first order, wrote it down. Ready to go but still waited about again. No reason given for wait. Lack of training? - Brought 2 types of menu then 5mins later withdrew 1 menu - friends had already chosen something from that menu. - Waiter asked if drink was single or double but all gins are double as stated on the menu.

Disappointing. Group of 12 for afternoon drinks & snacks. Really slow to take our order even though it was quiet, served half the table their drinks then came back several minutes later to say the Gin Flights the other half of the group ordered were not available. Tried to order from the menu of “71 gins” but at least a dozen were not available. Bar snacks also unavailable. Some people had to try three times to get a drink they had in stock. Nice decor & music.

Victoria sponge was not even a sponge in its last life. Scones like bricks, tasteless Where's Wally type of filling in the sandwiches, search party still out looking for a filling and a waiter. Crap service. No plus points at all. Crowning glory toilet tissue for hand drying in the toilets. AVOID, GO TO A GREASY SPOON BEFORE CONSIDERING HERE

I honestly wish I’d read the reviews BEFORE going. We went as a family of three for afternoon tea as a Mother’s Day treat, it took ages for someone to take our order, and let’s face it if you’re booked for afternoon tea there’s really no need for time to look at the menu as it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion apart from tea or coffee. We were eventually served our hot drinks 25 minutes after our arrival, by the time our food arrived, another 25 minutes later the drinks were stone cold and I had to ask for these to be replaced, this wasn’t offered I had to ask. The food was enjoyable enough when it did arrive but exceptionally overpriced. Throughout our visit we watched harassed staff running around like headless chickens and almost every table was trying to attract their attention, when they did manage it and it was no mean feat they were all complaining about their wait or missing items. I emailed the manager to highlight the issues and express my disappointment, the response was that they would investigate the matter and they ask that if we do return could we let them know first so that they can ensure that the experience is nothing short of exceptional, surely at £102 it should have been exceptional anyway?

What a great bar, cafe and general venue. Luca runs a lovely spot in the centre of Glasgow. Great afternoon tea with a few drinks. We will be back in the better weather to enjoy some gin outside! Attentive service and warm atmosphere.

Had a great first visit to Cup Merchant City. We had been given a voucher for an afternoon tea for 2 for our birthdays. Food was lovely and the staff were there to help when we wanted more jam and milk. The iron teapots were rather unusual. Decor and ambience were just right. Heading back in a few weeks for the Morning Tea and fully expect it to be just as good.

Disappointing. Had been looking forward to coming back for afternoon tea. It was amazing last time. However this visit was disappointing. Service was slightly grudging and sullen. One food stand appeared almost immediately and sat and sat. This was before the drinks order was taken and about half an hour before the second one arrived. So maybe not as fresh as it could be. Food was ok. Five stars last time. Something not quite right.

Went in for food he gave me menu and drinks. Then forgot about us I approached him about ordering food he said it was now closed so no food we were there and hour before cut off for food being made it was the manager that was on the floor he gave us theme u then when he was questioned later when we went to pay for drinks he denied giving us the menu at all which was a lie not good he should be spoke to about doing his job properly

Excellent choice was a friend’s birthday. Nice variety of small breakfast rolls with usual fillings and relish. Scones and croissants were ok too and as much tea coffees as you want. Staff lovely and didn’t throw us out even although we exceeded our 2 hours

Excellent food and service, there was four of us having the three course Christmas menu, each course was superb.

Staff were all lovely and the drinks were good though drink prep was very slow which, in a gin cocktail bar, probably needs speeded up.

What a wonderful time we spent here today. I hadn’t seen my friend for nearly 3 years as we now live at opposite ends of the country. I have coeliac disease so choosing where I can eat safely is the first thing to sort out before any social occasion. I booked Cup in the Merchant City as I’d seen It recommended on a facebook coeliac page..we all want to help each other. It was not the cheapest option in the city but I reckon today proved it was the best option. We were early..it was dreich outside and we took the chance of turning up half an hour before our booking to see if we could even sit in with a drink before afternoon tea service. The maitre de was just delightful. It was not a problem. He laid our table and brought us drinks. When the trays arrived my gluten free one was separate and when I went later to congratulate the chef on how good it was he told me he was sorry that the mince pie was not homemade! I’ve been for many snacks where the gluten free options were ALL bought in prepacked! Everything else was made in house and was delicious. Neither my friend or I could finish the tray of goodies but we were given goody boxes to take home. We were fortunate it was not too busy and the staff kindly let us sit and catch up way over our allotted time…they definitely deserved their tip 👍😊. Well worth a visit and in our opinion great value for money. Thanks lads.

Came last night for dinner, unfortunately the chef had to go early but we had fabulous drinks , service was fantastic and the manager really looked after us, we will be back for dinner soon , thanks very much!

I was initially interested in checking this place out as it was used as a location in a book I read and sounded interesting. It definitely did not disappoint. I decided to try one of the Gin flights, this was really cool as it allowed an opportunity to try 3 different gins paired with appropriate garnishes and tonics/mixers.

After our experience of chaos in August when we visited, manager Alva and her team more than made up for it yesterday when we gave them a second chance. She had said shecwould honour itison voucher regardless of date because of what had happened, and she did, and above and beyond. We had our morning tea experience which is what we wanted, and we throughly enjoyed. We got sense they had taken on board our feedback and welcomed opportunity to prove they could deliver a great experience. They did from the moment we arrived. Good and prompt service ,without being intrusive or effusive. Alvanley got it spot on, and was clearly supporting new member of staff which was nice to see. A great experience. We still have one voucher left and will be back for the morning tea again as it is such a nice change, in a lovely setting and with great service. Thank you.

My workmates chose this lovely venue for my retirement party and I couldn't have been more pleased. The staff covering 'The Tasting Room' yesterday were so efficient and accommodating and the food was excellent. My colleagues with dietary requirements were very happy with their selections also. I've been to CUP before and I'm confident I'll be back!

The afternoon tea is brilliant .It was a gift from my brother and I'd recommend it as a present .In fact I'm going to do that for a friend soon .

Visited yesterday and had a sauvignon blanc and chicken wings with honey and sweet chilli sauce. Delicious and excellent value.

Came with my friend as part of a day out for her 50th. Ordered gin flights, told we couldn’t get them because it would be a 45 minute wait because they were too busy. So ordered other gins which we were told would be a 35 minute wait. Then told one of those gins wasn’t available so I changed to another. When our drinks eventually arrived, we placed another order straight away of a different gin and a glass of Prosecco to save another wait. That gin wasn’t available either then told they didn’t have any Prosecco too. Changed our order then after these two drinks we gave up and left. First time here and don’t think I’d be back. Would’ve rated one star except the people serving were lovely, very helpful and friendly.

If you’re a gin lover, this place has a solid variety of gins and tonics/mixers. I found the service lacking, but the gin was great.

I decided to try this from a TA recommendation. We were very pleased. No booking required and staff were very chatty/polite. We ate eggs florentine and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough. I really enjoyed the EF, but the scrambled eggs were a little over on the smoked salmon. Very nice americano to wash it all down with, though. Thank you very much.

Using voucher for afternoon tea. Staff took time to explain how the experience would proceed and also everything delivered on the cute wooden tea stands. There was enough variety in the edibles and we were offered the option of boxing what we did not consume to take away. The location feels like a secret spot, decor is charming and the staff are helpful and polite.

Q code table service worked perfectly and the staff were great. Ate spicy wings and sourdough bread with oil. Super little place

Had afternoon tea today , absolutely delicious . Everything was so fresh . Excellent service , nothing was too much trouble for staff . We had to change times and had a fussy teenager . Lovely ambience . Would highly recommend .

Mmm. Ordered warm toasted sourdough with churned butter olive oil and balsamic. Got cold bread, butter squares in a packet, and a bowl of olive oil with a spot of balsamic. Returned it. Apparently what I got was "off the old menu". Yeah, right. Couldn't be bothered and hoped I'd say nothing sounds more like it. Had food and two rounds of drinks, and had to grab the attention of passing waiting staff each time. Not once were we approached to ask if we wanted anything. All in all, pretty poor experience.

Went early Friday evening! Lovely venue. Only disappointment is you can't take all the drinks out to the terrace.

Went here for Afternoon Tea. Couldn’t fault the quality or quantity of the food but it was served on an unusual wooden contraption with little shelves for everything. No issue with that until I saw the kitchen staff wipe some down with a grubby cloth and no sign of any sanitisation! Guys, there’s food touching all of that! There was an excellent selection of beverages and top ups are free. Watch the Stump teapots though, ours had no screw holding the lid in place and anyway the lid was grubby with dried tea stains on it and the top of the pot handle…… not impressed! There were four scones but one wee pot of jam and a tub of clotted cream, not much over possibly eight surfaces ( 4 cut in half). Service was dead slow and at least one table had to ask them to hurry up, it didn’t really bother us as we had not time constraints but heaven help you if it was a busy period! Would we go back? Of course, but I hope they read this and take heed before we do!

We were in for drinks on a Sunny Saturday afternoon this weekend . We were greeted and opted to sit outside in the courtyard. The server told us to order via the barcode on the table. We tried to order drinks as guests but the App wanted our name and address contact number and email. There was only one person serving and bringing drinks and she was run off her feet. We felt sorry for her she looked overwhelmed. After failing to catch her eye we got up and left. Gin 21 , What is wrong with employing people? The App may have been useful during Covid but there is no need for it now. It is called the hospitality sector for a reason. Why should customers have to give you all their details to order a drink, when you cant be bothered to speak to us or take our order? What do you do with all our information? It’s a lovely setting and courtyard , just a pity its not very welcoming. A disappointing experience.

Iv been to many afternoon teas which are always hit or a miss. Cup merchant city definitely was a hit. The decor and atmosphere was classy and modern. Service was very good too. You get free refills on all hot/cold drinks with a large variety of teas. The food itself was lovely but for me there wasn’t a big enough savoury selection for the price per person. Sweet selection was ideal. Overall is a perfect location hidden in Victoria court for a nice chilled catch up with friends and family. I actually had prepaid gift card which I purchased at the renfield street Cup but was told I couldn’t use there which was very angering due to changes apparently. There loss however was not ur gain….

First time for dinner last night with an itison gift Wow the food was beyond excellent and the service very friendly Food piping hot will def go back just back from another itison voucher another fantastic visit staff so attentive the food plentiful a must The gins are v pricey be warned !!

We were there at 10.30 and it was almost empty. We asked for breakfast, but there wasn't served any food until 11, so she said. While other people got food on the table. We didn't feel welcome at all. Very strange and no hospitality.

I’ve been here a few times for drinks and it’s a nice place to sit out and enjoy the world go by. Visiting post-pandemic, the restrictions don’t take away from the experience. The waitress who served us was really lovely - happy to stand and chat for a minute. The toilets could be doing with some maintenance work - locks, doors, toilet seats all in need of repair. Otherwise they’re clean but I’d expect more of a place like this. The only down side was that a lot of the gins we wanted to order weren’t available. It’s also not cheap - between £8-11 for a drink. Update: been here for an afternoon tea and the service and food were excellent. A couple of cocktails were unavailable and the toilets are under repair but otherwise good.

Very disappointing experience. My husband received a voucher for the 5 course tasting menu. Despite booking ahead of time for it, we were disappointed to be told on arrival they no longer did it. We were offered the value of the voucher against our bill. Nothing more The manager seemed to think he was doing a favour by giving us that.. The food was poor at best and the choice very limited. Felt the managers attitude was poor

We booked for afternoon tea which was £24 pp. the savoury sandwiches were very basic. The waiter was very nice but he was so much under pressure to tell us that they need the table back. In fact 4 different waiters kept asking for the table back despite other empty tables that were available or Atleast looked available, you only get two hours per booking so by the time food comes it’s time to leave. I really felt rushed. The sweets were nice apart from the rock hard scones that had a sour butter taste of baking soda.

Afternoon Tea at Cup was part of a package at Gin Spa. The spa was very good, very friendly and welcoming staff. Really enjoyed the treatments with a lovely attentive, professional therapist. Just a pity the staff in cup weren't so friendly or welcoming. We were shown to our small table in a corner at the back of the tearoom. Waitress muttered something about gin or prosecco. We were given a glass of prosecco which was included in the package. We should also have been offed a gin and tonic which was never received. When the waitress brought the cake stand she did describe what was on the stand but not so much in a pleasant way. We started to eat but ten minutes later we were still waiting for tea. I eventually had to approach a member of staff to ask for it. When it eventually arrived the waitress just plonked it down on the table without a word. We were never asked if everything was ok or if we required anything else during our time there. As we were leaving the waitress lifted the cake stand without a word or even any eye contact .It looked like all the staff had fallen out with each other. Not a good atmosphere and not the best afternoon tea I have experienced. When outside my friend said why did you leave a tip when the service was so bad? I asked myself the same question ! I would return to the spa but not to cup.

Booked a Mother’s Day afternoon tea for me and my mum. We were seated downstairs next to the serving area, with not a lot of room between tables. It was very busy, unsurprisingly, and staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. Tea cups were half filled and they took a long time to bring milk. The afternoon tea itself was really nice, lovely scones, sandwiches and cakes. A definite low point was when two members of stuff conducted a conversation over our table as if we weren’t there!

We avoided an overpriced hotel breakfast and tried Cup. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Coffee was lovely and Cup breakfast and waffles both very tasty

My mum and I went today for an afternoon tea and we had booked the wrong time for it (we were an hour early for that service) Adam, who gave us an amazing service, said we were welcome to stay and have a drink instead...

Had an excellent afternoon tea here - staff were very friendly and attentive (but not overly so). Food was delicious and varied - lovely filled rolls and croissant, scones with cream and jam and a varied selection of desserts. Boxes supplied to take home any...

Good was lovely but lacking in seasoning, especially the beef. Was giving no indication that we wouldn't be able to have dessert as the kitchen clears at 9pm. A heads up and we would've ordered before hand. Service to start was very slow. Not menus, drinks order taken... 2 staff just chatting at the bar, on their phones. Cocktails were fab. Rating for drinks then food.

I visited today for the first time for the spa treatment , it was such wonderful experience from being greeted at the door to leaving.. Thank you to Lorraine for the massage and reflexology and for your knowledge and explanation of treatments. Afternoon tea was amazing, thank you to the chefs for a lovely and delicious afternoon tea including a vegan option and we appreciated all the knowledge and recommendations that the waiter recommended. To all the staff that were working today, thank you so much for making us feel welcome and for brilliant service 👍looking forward to the next visit.

Excellent christmas menu & gins. A must for all gin lovers, would highly recommend one of the gin flights if you want to try a few different ones.

Visited Cup Merchant City on 23rd December for a festive afternoon tea. Staff were very friendly upon arrival, but unfortunately, both the service and the afternoon tea itself were extremely disappointing compared to previous visits. After being seated, we weren't brought a hot drinks menu...

Walk In, Saturday 17th December. Was really looking forward to visiting the venue. Access was a tad confusing, sign on door directed you to go through the shopping area, not from the outdoor seating area. Was greeted by Slav, it immediately felt like we were being an inconvenience, as we hadn't booked. Poor communication. We were then directed to a table. Venue wasn't very busy, maybe 70% capacity. Plenty of staff on hand. Our waiter Derek, was very friendly and polite, however, was new to the team and lacked knowledge and experience of Gins and Pairings. Given its a Gin Bar, I'd have expected the knowledge to be there! Took almost 15 mins for the drinks to reach the table, despite the tray of drinks being sat on the bar. We had to ask for them to be brought over. Had the service been better and had we been made feel welcome, we would have stayed longer! Finally, paying the bill, there was an issue with the Card Payment, because the signal was poor. Eventually paid by cash. Overall all, this could have been so much better and its disappointing that the energy and knowledge just wasn't what I'd expect. To note, the 2 payment attempts, which declined at the time, were taken from the bank! This was followed up during the week and the Manager on Duty was super helpful, apologised for the inconvenience and offered to rectify the situation immediately.

We went for the festive afternoon tea when in daytime the venue masquerades as "Cup". This was to celebrate the occasion of my friends birthday . The decor is fab and looks even better with festive decorations. No high tea plate tiers here. A lovely twist is plentiful food being served on a bookshelf like ensemble. Theres a long list of goodies, Salmon wraps cream cheese & cucumber rolls, ham & cranberry rolls. Various savoury bites. A real surprise was a small cup of parsnip and bramley apple soup which was delicious. Cakes and pastries were too many to list. See pics to get an idea. We shared Coconut tea and Hawaiian vanilla tea from amazing cast iron teapots. Service was exemplary. We were attended to immediately on arrival Staff were very friendly and chatty and nothing was too much trouble. Anything you don't eat can be boxed up for you to take home and enjoy later. The cost for two happy people was £54. Not excessive for the Quality, quantity and service received. The venue is nestled in an indoor arcade at Virginia Court . Just off Virginia st which becomes a gin bar in the evenings. There is also a tented outdoor seating area perhaps more suited to summer nights.Thoroughly recommended for any special occasion.

Late brunch with family and friend after The Great Scottish Run. Two vegetarian and Two full Scottish breakfasts with pots of tea. Breakfasts were freshly cooked, hot, delicious and plentiful. Staff were friendly and efficient. Good location- Would recommend.

Have been in here before, and had bad service, but decided to try again yesterday. I shouldn’t have bothered! The waiting staff were completely disinterested, and the service was ridiculously slow. The drinks were good when they arrived, but I’m afraid they didn’t make up for the terrible service. There definitely won’t be another visit!

Went in here today for a coffee and cake, staff were all helpful and attentive,cake was fresh and lovely and soft not like other establishments where the cake is always hard and you don't know how long it's been sitting, coffee was a good size, keep up the good work, I look forward to my next visit

My wife likes gin. No problem there. I, on the other hand, don't care for gin so asked for a beer. No draught beer available. Apparently, the tap was malfunctioning.
