Terrific chips and top battered sausage! What’s not to like.

Had fish & chips here whilst staying in Hebden Bridge. I had seen the mixed reviews and so I was dubious but they were some of the nicest fish and chips I have ever had. The chips were crisp on the outside but lovely and soft on the inside and the piece of fish I had was a good fillet of fish that broke off into thick flakes - better than I get near home. I would visit Crown Fisheries again and would recommend it to others.

The fish and chips were superb!!! First time I’ve visited here and I could smell the chips two streets away! I can tell you now the fish was one of the best I’ve ever had, white, thick, tasty and the batter was superbly crispy and tasty! I even went back within an hour to purchase a second portion for my husband! We really enjoyed the food! I want to go again and try their special of king size fish and chips which costs just over £10! That would be ample for us two pensioners and my 5 yr old granddaughter, therefore a very good value meal that is so tasty that we would all enjoy!

Awful food, chips was soggy and inedible. way overpriced. Threw 99% away. Save your .oney and go elsewhere

Absolutely horrific. All food horrible and chipped a tooth trying to eat the chips. Fish was pretty much raw. Drinks were only good thing.

My recent visit to Crown Fisheries in Hebden Bridge was nothing short of a disaster, a grim reminder that not all local eateries can deliver on the quaint charm and quality one might expect from a picturesque Yorkshire town. What should have been a delightful stop for traditional fish and chips turned into a 2024 comeback special of League of Gentleman. Upon entering, the ambiance was overshadowed by the palpable tension behind the counter. The woman who greeted us, presumably the owner or a long-suffering employee, was the epitome of hostility. With steam almost visibly emanating from her ears, she projected the vibe of someone perpetually on the brink of a volcanic eruption. Her hair, black with striking grey roots, seemed the only genuine thing about the place, offering a stark contrast to the forced smiles one might encounter elsewhere. But oh, how I longed for those insincere pleasantries over her scowls and sharp tones. I have attached an artists impression. Ordering food felt like an imposition. Each request was met with an eye-roll or a sigh, as if our desire to sample their fare was a personal affront. It was clear she had no interest in being there, and she made sure we knew it. Everything seemed too much trouble for her, and I found myself apologising for merely existing in her space, let alone ordering. And then, there was the food. Oh, how I wish I could say the culinary experience made up for the lackluster service, but alas, the fish and chips were as mediocre as the service was terrible. The batter lacked crispness, the fish was unremarkable, and the chips were forgettable. It was a meal that could have been forgiven if the experience had been pleasant, but under the circumstances, felt like adding insult to injury. In summary, if you're seeking the warm, inviting atmosphere that Hebden Bridge is known for, along with a serving of delicious fish and chips, I regret to say you won't find it at Crown Fisheries. There are plenty of charming locales in the area where your patronage will be appreciated and rewarded with both delightful food and service. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere. This is a local fish and chip shop for local people. There's nothing for you here.

Spam fritter season is upon us again, first review of the year. Spam Fritter, 7/10 Would have been a 9/10 but batter was too soggy. Nice decent thick Fritter, proper spam, as mentioned only let down by soggy batter. Now this may have been my fault asking for vinegar so I'm going to review this Chippy again and have one 'dry'. Chips and sausage not bad, better than most.

Awful...Worst fish and chips ever. Chips were rock hard. Even my dog struggled to eat one. Then the ducks turned their beaks up at them. Fish was very dry and rubbery and tasteless.

Dreadful. Reheated chips. Reheated fish. Dry and disgusting. Peas hard as bullets in a watery slop. They should be ashamed of taking the money. Avoid at all costs.

New staff who took the xxxs rip off

Chips virtually inedible. Fish fell apart and had strong unpleasant aftertaste. Serving staff unengaging. Used to be great, clearly new owners.

Chips are a mix of too crunchy, chewy and hard, and a lot of spiky ones!….I had to eat with my front teeth as I almost lost a filling….I’d say they were last night’s chips warmed up! Don’t bother they’re awful.

Not been in for a few months , went in with my grandson this morning. Different staff on , asked for chips and curry twice , charged £9.40 . There was easily a 50% reduction in chips , we won't be going there again.

Bit pricey but the food was good

Perfectly pleasant staff unfortunately what we ordered was awful. The king size fish was dry & tasteless with the batter overcooked. The chips were stuck together and claggy. One of our party couldn't eat it it was so bad.

I went here for food for my friends today, (I checked it was still cooked in bed dripping due to being Vegan myself, and it was) My friends were really disappointed in all the food. Tiny portions and they couldn't eat many of the chips at all as they were hard not tasty at all. I asked for a small fish, but get the impression that all their fish are small. Staff were perfectly pleasant, and place was clean, but unfortunately food just wasn't up to standard. Not sure if an off day...

Massively depends who's frying as to what experience you get. Shorter guy, Rick, 5 stars. taller guy, 1 star The difference in consistency seems to be staff training.

Absolutely awful chips… bought 2 bags and not even able to eat half a bag. Chewy, bad, rotten over cooked you name it we got it. I’m sure it is a mishap as pictures on here made me head to this chippy.

Went in for a king-size fish and chips with curry sauce and a sausage and chips very simple order.. they forgot about my sausage and chips had to prompt after they wished me a good day which is fine... told In the shop by the cook the chips we're fresh out by 4mins get home 2minutes away to find 90% of chips on both meals pretty much like like crisps... on the plus the fish was great

The best chippy. I drive twenty miles to have fish and chips cooked in dripping. Oh my goodness so tasty. Also, if having chips sample their Irish curry sauce. Delicious.

Easter Friday, the queue was 25 minutes and then the fish batter was soggy. Still edible and tasty, even, but it has to take less time than this to serve 10 people, surely?

Well to say this is the worst fish and chips for quite a while, fish batter soggy,fish not sure what it was but it did not look or tatse like cod or haddock, chips uncooked and soggy. Never Will I go again, two chaps working there may also want to address their personal appearance. Shocking

It surprising that in a town like Hebden Bridge where over half of the population are either vegetarian or vegan that this place still cook's in animal fat not only is it unhealthy it absolutely stinks so bad that it makes you feel sick 🤮 It's time to enter the 21st century and start using sunflower oil

Was here to visit the Christmas market, really fancied a Fish and Chips was so surprise how good it is, and everything was so fresh, as every order were cooked as people are ordering it, despite a Christmas Market bring lots of non locals but this little fish and chip still bought in many of the locals in.

I visited Crown Fisheries a few weeks ago. The staff were very friendly, and chatted as I waited for my freshly cooked fish and chips. The short wait was worth it, as this was the best fish and chips I've had for years.

We had fish, chips and battered sausage. The fish was tiny and the batter was wet and greasy. The chips were greasy and both were a soggy mess which neither of us could eat and pretty tasteless. The battered sausage was slightly spicy and very average, eat went in the bin Would not go back, should have realised when there were no other customers

Upped thier game recently and have improved. The fish i had was delicious and was cooked just how a fish should be. I cannot comment on the restaurant as I used the takeout service on the side. Although one gripe was the fish bap/bread was a tad on the small side. Maybe bring the long buns back. The scallop and sausages are also amazing. My recommendation is a fish butty with curry sauce!

Called in on a Sunday evening. Chips were horrible, stale and chewy. Tasted like the oil was going rancid. Suspect they’d been sitting there for way longer than they should have, definitely not fresh food served here. Colleagues have told me it’s best avoided, they were right. Would rather travel to Friendly Fisheries - their food and service is great.

My parents went here on Sunday and got a regular size portion of chips, there were hardly any chips & it cost £2.60. My Mum & Dad are both pensioners and this was a little treat but they were both disgusted at the quantity & price, they have been going here for years & cannot believe how much it's changed recently. Unfortunately my Mum and Dad won't be going again instead they will continue to go to David's Chippy in Milnrow near the Tin Bobbin where there meagre pension goes further.

Consistently great fish & chips at a reasonable price. Can get a chippy tea with all the trimmings (gravy and a can of pop) for two for less than £20. With other takeaways, you're looking at upwards of £40. You can't beat Crown for value, and the chips being fried the traditional way (in dripping rather than oil) is the (deep-fried) cherry on top.

Spent our hard earned money buying fish and chips here, what are waste. The fish was of some unknown species and flash fried so under cooked on the inside and as for the chips, rubbery and tasteless. Don't learn the hard way, avoid at all costs and warn your friends

Long wait for soggy fish and an equally soggy pie (microwaved). Chucked it and went elsewhere.

I won’t be giving this place my money again there is a young girl in there who clearly has no customer service and twice she’s been rude to me throwing money at me no manners either I questioned why I was paying for the tray which how else are you going to eat won’t bother next time. Makes it more worse that the manager was stood right next to her & never said a word rude!!!!

Avoid!! Overpriced undercooked food, rude incompetent staff and cramped seating. I’m sorry to have to write this review as it’s never nice to be negative but I just can’t let our experience slide. Firstly we were taken aback by the prices, not to sound cheap but it cost us £13.50 for a “large” fish and chips with a curry sauce, whereas for comparison there’s another fish shop in a neighbouring town where the same costs £7! We also ordered a coffee and a tea. The coffee arrived with no milk and we didn’t receive the tea. I told a member of staff about it and received the reply “oh right” and she laughed. All the staff also had a very miserable expression throughout. Eventually the tea came with the food, which quite frankly was appalling. The batter was nice, but this was the only positive. The fish was bland and many of the chips were hard and undercooked. Portion sizes were also laughable for a “large” and begs the question what a normal size would have looked like. Considering there are so many better fish restaurants around, with fairer pricing and nicer food, do yourself a favour and go elsewhere!

Visited this fish and chip restaurant for the first time today but won't visit again. Asked for Plaice and chips, no plaice as the order had not been delivered. The lady was very apologetic stating yesterday was their first opening after lockdown. Asked for Scampi and chips whilst my husband had fish and chips. These dishes are served with bread and butter and a pot of tea, we did not want the bread and butter. The scampi when it arrived was obviously overcooked and looked it. I never said anything but when I tried to eat it, it was not very pleasant so I left more than I ate. Admittedly it does state the chips are cooked in beef dripping but again not very tasty. When I went to lay the lady asked was everything OK, I did say the scampi had been overcooked, she said Oh really I'll tell him Very disappointedand won't go again. .

First time visit to this chippy and we were not disappointed. Fantastic fish and chips, also had some scraps and loved it! We have been to a lot of chippys and this place is well worth visiting, highly recommended👍👍

One of the best traditional fish and chip shops in the UK

When our group arrived here we were told there was no food left. Very disappointing as customers. A fish and chip shop running out of food? Having spoken with a local lady we were told this isn't the first time it has happened. Fortunately there was a nice Chinese takeaway across the road. I can highly recommend the food we got there. Needless to say we won't be using the Crown Fisheries again.

The worst chips I've ever had. Tasted like cardboard, pale as a baby's backside. Absolutely horrible. Dry potatoes tried to chew but had to spit them out. Curry sauce wasn't much to write about either, was a sad attempt at Chinese curry sauce.

Really tasty haddock and chips and excellent customer service from Sam when the shop was unexpectedly closed.

I arrived in hebdon Bridge to try the grilled cheese booth on my lunch break whilst working in the area. Unfortunately this was closed so the chippy was ideally located, I then ordered a chip butty to fill myself up, can't go wrong with a chip butty.... Wrong, my portion was mediocre the bread cake was no bigger than a Warburton roll and I asked for curry sauce and salt. This was poured all in one spot so I'd get a full mouth of salt whilst eating the what can only be described as frozen chips. Not traditional sort of chippy chips you would expect, I'm not sure wether or not I had curry sauce on as there was so little on them. I shall not be going again

It's not hard to remember, 'scraps!' Underwhelming dry fish, missing half its batter and poor chips. For over 15 quid for fish and chips twice with 1 sausage you'd expect better.

Been here quite a few times and the food has always beet spot on. Today however was shocking. Chips, fish and battered sausage were dripping in grease...£12 thrown straight in the bin...wont be going again. One star is generous.....

Lovely meal today. Couldnt have been more Welcome on such a cold day. Normally use the take away which is always great but today stayed in the cafe. Very enjoyable lunch. Chips cooked beautiful, fresh,hot and crispy Staff very polite attentive but not intrusive. Would highly recommend.

Stood in queue for 10 minutes when we got to front of the queue was told they didn't have what we wanted sold out couldn't they have asked what we wanted on entering the shop found counter assistant a bit brash and coughing into her sleeve and not washing her hands.

Best fish & chips I have had in a long time

Have called into here for years when visiting the town and use the takeaway side of this traditional chippy. The latest visit was as good as previous ones, battered sausage & chips was perfect, food was hot, great value prices and the service ok. Amazingly 'scraps' are available which is rare nowadays! There was a slight delay as a long queue was there being at lunchtime, so to be expected, but we always think a busy chippy means the food must be good and in our opinion it was. Recommended !

Call into 25min wait for fish chips still no service who ever got it now should be bit more aware that not good also staff playing Christmas songs it's still only Nov not good call at other chippy guests what fish chips service in 5min so if you're business should be running a lot faster

I'm sure I've had worse fish and chips, but I can't remember when or where. Soggy chips, slimy undercooked fish (even though the batter was over-browned). Never again!

Today was shocking.took 40 mins before we had to go and ask for a menu,the table had plates and left over food,not cleared while we sat patiently ,we had to ask for a cloth to wipe it our self and clear,they forgot our order, and our drinks. we had to ask for fork's and knife's, the service was shocking,and the fish was soggy.the owner didn't seem to care when we complained , never going back again :(
