We went to a cabin for the weekend as a group of 4 adults and on the last night we drank and awful lot and needed a cure the morning after. We went to the local garage to grab snacks and water and saw a Cranstons Cafe and thought we would go back pack up and return. It was a Sunday and we were greeted but found it odd that we were then told our table number and just pointed in the direction of said table and given menus. We had to get extra cutlery and salt/pepper despite being plenty of other tables being served. The food we thought was a little pricey however it did not disappoint! The miso mushrooms on toast were amazing and the hash browns were nothing like I’ve ever tasted just maybe a bit too crispy which I guess is personal preference. We were never checked on and there was no announcement of a 2 minute silence and had we not have read the sign on the way in we would never had known which we assumed most diners did not. The menu also says their is a free drink with the full English but when ordering we were never guided and when we went to checkout a flat white was not part of it but any juice/soft drink was but my sister still paid for hers. All in all food was great service was subpar.

Wife has an allergy for fresh tomatoes to which I made the server aware of, she was then TOLD that she would not want the beans then by second server. For context we both ordered the full English. My wife advise these were fine and yes she did want beans, 2 mins later male server again challenged my wife said it was confusing! Wife quite rightly advised she had already clarified this prior and was only allergic to fresh tomatoes. Whilst food was excellent the lack of listening to my initial statement and subsequent challenges were not appreciated. Lesson for staff LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS hence my rating for service.

Cranstons offers an upmarket range of food products in a very pleasant purpose built building just of the A66 at Penrith. As well as the normal groceries found in the chain supermarkets it has a great deli and butchery counter (also a take away with ready to eat option) Fresh fish, dry goods, wine, and other drinks are also available. The store is well run and the staff are very pleasant and helpful. There is also a good restaurant/cafe upstairs offering a menu ranging from breakfast items through lunch to tea and cake choices. There is usually a daily special item available. The restaurant is not open late afternoon or evening. The location makes it a good choice for a break when travelling through the area (access time from the M6 is a few minutes depending on traffic)

Was shocked and incredibly saddened to learn that Cranston's chicken products are from a factory farm in Penrith, and their pork products are from indoor reared pigs, both of which are the cruelest way to produce meat/poultry. Never shopping there again.

Cranstons is a great place for dining, situated just off the M6 on the outskirts of Penrith. Plenty of parking available. We have been frequent visitors of the services at Tebay but as their popularity has grown, the services have been overcrowded and overpriced. Cranstons is a brilliant alternative to visit, just a few miles further north of Tebay. The food was good, and excellent waiter service (rather than the canteen style at Tebay). The coffee (flat white) was superb! There are also plenty of gf options available and lovely looking cakes. I can't rate the atmosphere as it was very quiet during our visit, but the cafe is well laid out with plenty of room between tables, very clean and soft music playing in the background. In addition a great farm food shop downstairs for purchases after eating. I can highly recommend.

A Cumbria institution, whether dining in or buying quality produce for use at home. I have family that always ask for me to take them a couple of their family sized steak pies.. One thing I would like to ask the or maybe two is, could they bring back their wonderful Cumberland sausage that was flavoured with garlic, OMG that was so delicious and could they please bring back their Steak and Kidney pies. So delicious, so hard to get these days. Keep putting out the tasters and looking forward to seeing wjat the festive Pre order menu is going to bring this year. We went to Oswald's the cafe on site. When we arrived it had just closed, 4:30pm? With the store being open longer couldn't the cafe get some evening business? Quite quiet when we went in as they had stopped serving food shortly after we arrived. Food was delicious and service was very good. However.... Went to the toilet before continuing on our journey and the first toilet had 7 empty toilet rolls on the floor and no actual roll for use, the second toilet was similar but had some roll left. It also had a sanitary towel lying on the floor. Disgusting conditions and I was shocked. Had I went there first I wouldn't have eaten there at all. They were about to clean the toilets but it was obvious this hadn't been done for a long time. Worst I have seen in any eating establishment ever. It's a shame because it spoiled an otherwise lovely visit.

The restaurant had limited choice, I opted for Eggs Benedict. The sourdough toast was only slightly toasted, but that did not matter as the overcooked poached eggs had been put on the bread as had a deal of the cooking water had been leaving the "toast" soggy. The Hollandaise sauce was placed on the side of the plate, not on the hard eggs, and there was not enough Hollandaise to be a factor in the taste. The bacon was fine.

So first I want to start with saying that the staff on our visit were all lovely and very friendly/attentive. I also should mention that the scone and coffee I had were both lovely. The reason I am only giving three stars is down to the menu. It’s so boring I decided just to get a scone and find lunch elsewhere. Both of the days specials were a slightly different take on something already on the menu. Even without adding any more ingredients to the menu it could be diversified a lot. More choices of fillings for the sandwiches for example - you already do black pudding so why not offer a black pudding roll. Pricing I thought was also a bit over the top on certain items. The full English in terms of what is on the plate would probably be the the small breakfast options in most places (the one old ladies would order). The breakfast rolls seemed reasonable and honestly would be more filling than the full English for half the price. Rarebit at £14 was also a bit of a chuckle- bit pricy for cheese on toast with some red onion chutney. Nice atmosphere but wouldn’t return without checking the menu first.

Despite such a pleasant hotel and a great gentleman on reception, the people in the room directly above us were stamping around like a couple of elephants. I did complain to the receptionist, who did go and ask them to tread more quietly, but after he did this, the inconsiderate idiots in the room above started stamping louder. I will be complaining again in the morning, because for a big, professional hotel like this, it should at least have sound proofing on the floors and ceilings. Date is 15/11/24

We visit Dufton at least twice a year and eat at The Stag Inn. Rachael,Matt, and the team are always welcoming. The food is always excellent, and my allergies are catered for. During the winter months, the log burners are burning in the bar area, and the restaurant has beautiful views. It is a busy pub, and booking a table is recommended to avoid disappointment.
