For the relatively high prices charged we would have expected decent cuisine. Instead the dishes looked as if they were thrown together. Linguine floating in a tasteless sauce with a few bits bits of dried chicken.. Red Thai curry …..dried chicken, very little watery curry sauce at the foot of plate. No offer of chutney. We have eaten here a number of times but will certainly not be back. Something has gone seriously wrong in the kitchen

What a great pity the way the food fayre has changed. I have eaten there perhaps 30 times in the last 10 years and often with different friends and family. They, themselves, have gone back with their families. It was always a quality eating experience at a reasonable price. The setting is wonderful and the service was warm, informal and efficient - no change there. But, the menu is now more extensive and much, much more expensive. For example, burger and chips at £18?! Despite the lengthy menu, the restaurant previous favourite of steak pie was no longer on offer but we ordered fish pie - also at £18. Disappointingly, the pie was presented in a bowl on an enormous plate with a litre portion of mixed veg (which was cooked perfectly). It’s impractical to ‘fish out’ (excuse pun) food from a bowl using a fork. It may be easier to prep but the diner should be considered too. The pie was tasty but too little and over-priced. To be fair, when commenting to the waiter, he discounted the cost by £4 which was a nice gesture. I’ve had so many wonderful meals there that I will go back but, sadly, unless it resorts back to its previous ‘recipe’, it’s at risk of losing its well-deserved local reputation. As much as it caters to golfers, a very significant proportion of its custom is local but yesterday’s experience smacked of exploitation.

I was so looking forward to going here with friends for my birthday on Saturday night. We have always had first class service and quality food at the restaurant but, it was evident from our drinks order, that this was not the case on Saturday. We ordered 3 pink gins, one with lemonade, one with tonic and one with slimline tonic, with beer and some soft drinks. We asked the waiter if he was sure the gin was pink gin as soon as it arrived as it was completely clear. He went away to check and assured us that it was. We went ahead and tasted it but, of course, it was not pink gin! We asked the waiter to come over and explained it definitely was not pink gin so he came back with three pink gins but didn't know which one had tonic, slimline tonic or lemonade in it. The starters arrived and, everyone was a bit disappointed, to say the least. The standard of produce and portion sizes had clearly dropped since our last visit. Three tiny haggis bon bons were placed on a sqirt of whisky mayonnaise for 2 of our party. Another was presented with 6 battered prawns, more batter than prawn. And we had to get the waiter's attention again to ask for oatcakes for the smoked salmon 😒. The main courses were not much better. Two of our party were presented with dry, overcooked haddock, which was more heavy batter than fish, frozen chips and peas. On previous visits the fish was fresh, with melt-in-the-mouth batter and served with good quality triple cooked chips and a selection of seasonal vegetables in a separate dish. The steak pie was of similar quality with poor quality meat filled with carrot and celery to bulk it up and frozen chips instead of a choice of freshly prepared potatoes/chips and separate dish of seasonal vegetables. Finally, the fish plater was presented with only 2 of different types of fish that were advertised on the menu and with frozen chips rather than the skinny fries that were requested. We decided not to order any more drinks or dessert as we were so disappointed with the food and service, and couldn't see it getting any better at that point. One of our party did speak to the manager as we were leaving. The manager apologised and gave him a bottle of wine but I don't think any of our party will be eating here again Such a pity, as the restaurant was absolutely superb before. I think it must be under new management that have gone a step too far in cutting costs

Have been visiting this place for the last 17 years and as a local Aberlady resident it was one of my favourite goto place’s for breakfast and lunch. Till today it was always a great experience. Today I was with friends, totally 4 people, for Xmas lunch and experienced the following 1. Long delay waiting for food. The waitress did say expect 20 mins till food arrived shortly after placing the order. It took 40 mins and at no time did anyone approach us to explain about the additional delay. 2.The waiting staff were very young and do not seem to have had proper training on how to deal with customers. They frequently had extended periods with their backs to the tables while chatting and joking amongst themselves. Seems a serious management issue. 3. Once food did arrive it was not even in temperature. Some of the veg were borderline warm to cold. Just edible I did pass my remarks and comments to the individual behind the bar in the hope that improvements can be made and bring the dining experience back to where it was previously.

As you approach the Craigielaw Golf Club you experience one of those feelings that evokes memories of TV games shows where the contestants are shown pictures of the luxury resort they have just won as a prize... It's that good... the grounds are impeccable, the place is clean and modern... and those views!!! Well, who could beat those views across the firth of forth...? Quite simply - amazing. We were not so amazed, however, at the menu nor the food in the restaurant. Forget the menu advertised on the website. The evening dinner menu we were given was down to 4 or 5 of each starters, main courses and deserts... and don't even bother if you're vegetarian or vegan. The lady at the next table to us, choosing not to have either the veggie lasagne or veggie pie (neither of which, incidentally, that was actually listed on the menu), was reduced to having the nachos from the lunch menu! The menu we saw looks more like something that allows food to be assembled rather than cooked - the ubiquitous pate (that just needs taken out of the fridge) two soups - from pot to bowl... the fish platter (which I had) was nice but I could have got the same by buying a few things from the local coop - smoked salmon, mackerel and hot smoked salmon but surprisingly no prawns. It was fine but, as I say, assembled rather than cooked. The other half's lasagne, however, was a different story. It came with chips (carbs with more carbs) and an evenly spread layer of oil which seemed to have seeped out of the cheddar cheese on the top. Note to chef - lasagne does not have cheddar cheese in the recipe! What was underneath the oil slick was, the other half told me, ok. The staff were young and need to be encouraged to stop gathering like a swarm of bees at the bar (often with their backs to the diners) and perhaps some improvement to the welcome at the desk. We we welcomed. We did notice, however, that some other diners found their own seats and one that even had to collect their own menu in full view of one of the waiters. With such a wonderful, almost world class venue and location, it was a bit of a let down hence the 3 out of 5 stars. Some major plus points... some things that could be better.

The menu available in the restaurant is much smaller than that on the website - only about 5 items for each course were listed. Salmon toastie (no paninis were available) was rather dry & salty. Side salad had 1 bit of tomato but huge amounts of "greenery" Not nearly as good as previous visits.

Usually enjoy visits here but arrived to a much reduced menu. Could have been told when phone booking made. Then an item was unavailable but only as the other meals were ready to serve. Fish platter poor compared to previously. Inattentive waiters and to make matters worse I got stuck in the toilet. When I got out and mentioned it they knew it was an issue. I really panicked at the time so not happy that they knew about it.

Popped in for lunch with partner who is a member. Lamb dish was delicious & my partner's battered fish was nice too. Was lovely and quiet when we arrived. Low conversation and we got a table with a great view. Was spoiled by couple with double buggy carrying very young babies being seated right next to us. The children weren't howling but the baby started to get a bit grizzly so we finished our meal quicker than intended and didn't stay for dessert. This place is open to everyone so I suppose they won't turn down money from patrons even if the babies weren't eating. I don't dislike kids but I enjoy eating out in peace and quiet. Sadly, this visit was spoiled a bit because of this.

Been coming here for years. Food usually decent enough to good. What really lets this place down is the service. We recently went for lunch and one of our party found an insect (looked like a maggot/caterpillar) in our food. We proceeded to take it up to the bar area to inform staff about what we had found but dropped the insect. Shortly after advising staff about what we had found and the food being taken away, an older blonde lady came over in a very aggressive manner asking “is there a problem here?!”. When I explained that my sister had found what looked like a maggot or a caterpillar in her food she said “well I’d like to see it” in a way that suggested we were lying. My sister advised her that we dropped it but would not be crawling around on the floor to look for it so if she could make sure her meal was taken off the bill and she didn’t want anything else as she had lost her appetite at this point. I may add that this lady did not offer another meal or even an apology and she ‘stomped’ away.

We arrived around 10 ish and nothing was too much trouble, the staff are lovely, especially the gent who served us, I assume he is the Manager. We didn't opt for the full Scottish breakfast, but instead both ordered the bacon, sausage, black pudding and egg. While waiting for it to arrive I admired the stunning views over the golf course and the water beyond, and my partner of course! Two hot plates arrived with local produce, 2 black pudding, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 pork links (amazing) and 1 egg, all perfectly cooked, and served with plenty of warm toast and a large pot of tea for 2. What a treat to be sitting in the lovely clean restaurant admiring the views and savouring a lovely breakfast, I could have sat there all day. Thanks again to the lovely staff, no wonder they look so happy spending their working days in this lovely part of the world. I look forward to returing soon to sample the lunch/dinner menu, which offers a good choice and isn't expensive. FABULOUS!

Floor to ceiling glass with wall length doors that open the dining room into an open air facility weather permitting.Views of at least 4 holes, plus another golf course next to the coast. Sunday lunch, very busy, Great service. Food was very good, table delivery. Downside was having to order from bar after finding a table. Would have been a five with full service.

Stopped after golf. We had salads which turned out to big enough for a meal. Our waiter even brought us more chicken for the salad because he didn't think there was enough in it(there was). One of the other people in our group had fish and chips, and said it was fine--not overly deep fried, but lightly battered.Nice view which made for a pleasant time

A great place to meet up with friends, enjoy nice food and be wowed by the view. The fish and chips were very good (better without accompanying salad!) and the staff very friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit to enjoy the amazing vista!

Met up with some friends for lunch which was very good but cannot say the same about the staff. Very poor reception, especially at the bar, felt as though we were an inconvenience. Waiter serving the lunch was exactly the same, when I asked for oil for my salad he practically stuck his finger in my plate and said I already had some. The view from this restaurant is stunning, the reason we went there, and the food was very good but we won't be back due to the unfriendliness. There are lots of other restaurants locally who are more than welcoming when you walk through their doors.

lady member of staff not welcoming. We were given one menu for 4 of us. The bar area was not even half full and there was no one in the restaurant. When we asked for more oil for the salad we were told there was some on our plate. We were there at Xmas in the restaurant and the food and service were impeccable. hence we returned. What a contrast. Won't go a third time. Food was good

Very rare that I see a menu and can find two or even three discrete meal options that I would enjoy. Four of us went and thoroughly enjoyed a superb Saturday evening meal in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Staff were attentive and chatty without being overly familiar and OTT.Ambience was great for a chillax and that's exactly what we did!The bill even posed a pleasant surprise and was really reasonable. For completeness I had Pate to start - awesome and then Lamb - beautifully cooked and succulent to the nth degree. We'll be back.

Staying in the hotel lodge area overnight we decide to stay local and eat in the hotel. Starters, mains and drinks and we have eaten, paid and left in less than 45 mins, Feeling of being rushed, plate and cutlery not down for more than a minute and they are cleared. A bit too quick and feel they want to get cleared up for the night. Medium steak with pate, other half raved, I opted for the steak sandwich which came in a burger bun perhaps better in a ciabatta. The bun was a nit dry as if it had been sitting out and the skinny fries were awful, the last scraps from the frier. Overall 50% happy but mine terrible. Shame.

Craigielaw is a really nice place, the setting is lovely and the menu is also very good. It is bar service rather than table service, however it is not like your typical golf course clubhouse. The menu is varied, although there are not that many 'lite bite' options. We had club sandwiches, which were absolutely massive, and came with a mountain of chips. We were very impressed by the flavour, and the staff were helpful.

We were taken to Craigielaw Golf Club restaurant for lunch by friends. We chose the indoor seating. The room was bright and clean with views over 2 golf courses and the sea in the distance. Smart and casual dress codes fit well during the day. I expected the usual golf club edible standard fare. What a pleasant surprise. Spoilt for choice menus, friendly relaxed young waiters and imaginative dishes got my attention. The food was melt in the mouth and attractive. We ended up prodding at each others dishes. There is clearly a chef or two at the helm here. Even the profiteroles were baked fresh, light and full of flavour. The bakewell tart was in a class of its own much to my husbands delight. Kept him quiet for a few minutes other than the odd groan of pleasure. All hand baked with a warmed sponge base. Good wines too. Can't wait to go back and try other dishes. 5 star from me for value pricing and service.

After considering all of the usual local places, my partner and I googled and found craigielaw. We were surprised to be able to get a table at short notice on a Saturday night and expected either very expensive or not great experience. We were surprised on both counts. We had a lovely evening with great scenery, service, food and value for money. I expect we will be regulars now!

I have eaten here a few times now as it’s basically almost on my doorstep with being just a short drive away, and I have never been disappointed. The restaurant is bright and clean with stunning views over the golf course and the River Forth over to Fife. The food too is very good, being freshly prepared for you with good quality Scottish and locally sourced produce. There is a good choice on the menu – something for everyone really. Prices are very reasonable for both the food and any refreshments that you want to go with it. Personally, I can recommend the Cullen skink, the beef stroganoff, the haddock and the profiteroles. The young waiters are excellent; always being friendly and very attentive.Although principally a golf course, non-members are welcome to visit the clubhouse and dine in the restaurant. And the best bit for me …… you don’t even need to play golf to visit here!

It may be essentially a golf club but this open-to-all restaurant is very good. The view is spectacular and the food and service good too. We went with friends. The menu is enough to satisfy those who want dinner or a bar snack. Prices are reasonable. I had the Mexican starter which was superb then the vegetarian crepe. Others had the pork loin, fish and stroganoff. All were impressed. Two managed to share a pudding. The Australian wine was very keenly priced and excellent. Service was friendly and professional. Well worth regular visits.

Recently had a very tasty lunch with family. Good choice of food but might be nice for a dish of the day option to ring the changes. Service was excellent but would prefer 5/10 minutes between starter and main! No sooner had starter plates been removed, main course was out! As it happens we were restricted with time so was no issue. Only comment I would make as a negative was the music in the dining area was too loud and my preference would be none at all as usually dine with company and I don't like to compete with music. Will return when in the area as was very clean, food was tasty and the view is gorgeous albeit it was pouring with rain on the day we visited!

We had a delightful lunch at East Coast Musselburgh today, choosing from their set menu. The restaurant is clean, contemporary, and tastefully decorated, which created a welcoming atmosphere. We both started with the mussels in a spicy tomato sauce that also served as a flavorful broth. The sauce had the perfect balance of heat and richness, complementing the fresh mussels. For mains, I opted for the Spaghetti Harbour, which was generously portioned and packed with clams and mussels. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the dish was hearty yet refined. My wife had the King Prawn Calamari, which was served with a light, perfectly cooked batter, accompanied by crispy skinny fries, a fresh salad, and tartare sauce. She loved the combination of flavors and textures. We washed everything down with a refreshing Leith draught beer, which rounded off our meal perfectly. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The facilities were well-maintained, including spotless toilets, which is always a good sign. Overall, the meal was excellent value for money, and we left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend East Coast for anyone looking for fresh seafood and a great dining experience in Musselburgh.

Went here today for a birthday meal What a total and utter disappointment the quality of the food was very poor. I would have rated it no stars but had to give at least one to continue with the review. The meal I ordered was billed as a triple steak burger, OMG it was awful, when it was served to me the burger was bone dry and very small, over cooked and totally tasteless. There was no burger sauce, (what we were offered was a bottle of ketchup and seriously watered down mayo) there was no onion or cheese only a little piece of stale lettuce and one slice of very thin tomato in the very dry bun. It was listed as being served with rustic chips but I actual found they were nothing more than a handful of frozen skinny fries from a bag. I was charged almost £17 for this which is an absolute disgrace. I've had far better any tastier burgers from McDonald's for a third of the price. My partner had what was billed as peppered chicken which was very poor, served in a skillet which was no deeper than a saucer and it was served without rice which was listed on the menu. The manager came over before it was served and gave her a spoon and we were wondering why you would need a spoon to eat the meal! Then It became apparent when it was served, hardly any chicken and a few bits of pepper and onion and was swimming in some kind of peppered sauce, hence the spoon. This was also priced around £16/17, again ridiculously over priced for what was actually offered. We checked out the menu online before booking a table but when we arrived we were given a totally different menu from what was online. Then to top it all we paid cash and after some time we had to ask for our change from the bill (over £5). When the ki Manager came over he then said "folk normally say just to keep the change " we were Shocked and utterly embarrassed by this comment. What an absolute rip off this place is and we certainly won't be back .
