Christmas lunch 2023, £90 per head. Utter disappointment and a truly Fawlty Towers-esque experience. We had to laugh as it was Christmas Day but it was really awful. No one in reception, sign saying go to the bar. No one in the bar, eventually found a passing member of staff and we were directed to where Christmas lunch was happening. Through a door with a large sign saying ‘toilets’ past a kitchen set up and into what I assume is their banqueting space. We managed to catch someone’s eye and rather than being shown to our table we were waved in the general direction and had to please ourselves. After ten minutes of just sitting there I had to get up and ask a nearby waitress to take our drinks order. She seemed a little bit surprised we wanted drinks… Eventually some drinks arrived but it would take four more times asking for some water for the table before it came. Starters came out eventually and were fine. We then thought it would be nice to have some wine…. Me- could we have some wine please? Waitress- ……….. Me- do you have a wine list? Waitress- …..not really a wine list no…… what were you thinking of……. Me- maybe some white wine? Nice and dry? Maybe something from New Zealand? Waitress- erm…. I think we have a Pinot?? I don’t know about wine, I’m the wedding planner….. Me- ok let’s try the Pinot… Screw top of Italian Pinot Grigio plonked on the table and three glasses plonked down upside down….. By this point we really needed the wine! Mains were served, plated turkey dinner. We wait patiently for the dish of veg seen in the middle of all the other tables. It doesn’t arrive. I catch the eye of the waitress and enquire…. In her words ‘hmmm, they have run out of veg and there’s no more. I’m not sure what the plan is….’ No apology, nil, nada. Not five mins later we see veg sailing out to other tablets. At this point not even the wine is enough to soothe and we managed to ask the only sensible member of staff in the place, who magics up some veg asap. I could go on but I won’t. What the experience lacked in terms of service, it make up for in sheer comedy value but was daylight robbery for what we actually had. Hey ho! Update- very kindly the venue read my review and got back to me directly without me having to chase. They kindly refunded the cost of a bottle of wine and £15 per head. To be clear, the food was fine, I think we expected a little more for the price though, maybe a glass of fizz on arrival, coffee and petit fours after the meal etc. Kelly was fab on the day and when replying. The rest of the service was poor as described as above.

We booked for a very special Christmas dinner here after seeing this lovely place on a walk a few months ago. We decided to trust them with such a major event for us. We booked online, paid £90 per person and received a couple of emails. We ordered our choices a few weeks prior to Christmas Day, We were hoping to stay at the Castle a few nights but it was way out of our price range and we found an amazing cute little cottage nearby for a reasonable price. We turned up on a wet and windy Xmas day, couldn’t figure out where to park, walked through a courtyard, found some ladies outside having a cigarette who pointed us to a door with a “toilets” sign. We walked through some corridors, were ignored by staff, and found a freezing cold conservatory with a few other people eating. We waited to be told where to go but no one came to assist. We found a spare table and waited. Eventually someone turned up. Luckily we had found the right place. A lady checked who we were and what we’d ordered. We had to walk up some steps and walk round a corridor to get ourselves a drink. We expected all the usual xmas “bells and whistles” but it was very basic. The food was ok. My husbands main course was cold as was many other peoples. There were several complaints sadly which is not surprising given the price. There were quite a few unhappy people. The service was painfully slow and we had to ask 5 times for glasses of water. This was supposed to be a posh, special celebration. But sadly, was absolutely not. At best, it was just very basic. We couldn’t wait to leave. We will not be having a return visit or saving up for a few days stay in the hotel itself. Not a great way to celebrate Christmas. There are some amazing restaurants in the area. Really wish we’d booked one of them instead.

The place itself is beautiful and we’ll definitely be back to try their a la carte menu which looks good. The Sunday lunch for two courses for £15.99 - ok. I perused both the menus and their a la carte menu had olives as a starter not being a big eater that would be more suitable for me so I asked the server if I could have that with the Sunday lunch menu, she went to check but on her return said yes they could do that but for a £3 supplement!!! Really !!! £3 for olives instead of example the chicken gougons which I did have, is ridiculous. I’m sure olives are not more expensive than gougons ! Anyway the gougons were lovely hubby’s Brie was not the best though - over cooked and dry. Then came the main course we both chose the lamb with a £3 supplement (often the case with lamb and we were happy to pay it). Lamb was not the best it got more and more tough as we ate it, neither of us could finish it. Roast potato had to be sent back as it was burnt black. New ones were quickly brought out though but the burnt one should never have been served in the first place. A tureen of carrots and cabbage were served with a small dish of cauliflower cheese. Swede was served on the plate with the meat and potatoes. Boiled potatoes had their skin on (I hate this with a gravy dinner but I appreciate that not everyone does.) I would much rather have mashed potatoes, but that’s me. Gravy was tasty. So I’m happy to give 3 stars taking everything into consideration. Have to conclude with the staff who were absolutely fabulous. A big apology to the young waitress who offered to take us on a tour of the theatre I was suddenly taken ill and had to leave - I’m sure the food had nothing to do with it !

Visited this beautiful looking castle whilst staying at Pentre Riding Stables across the road. The area around it and the national with the river Tawe behind it are simply breathtakingly stunning. Would like to stay in the hotel itself one day but couldn't stay this particular weekend as they had a wedding on. The reception room was decorated beautifully for a wedding but the terraces adjacent to the room were dirty and in much need of cleaning and were very run down and covered in weeds. That didn't distract from the stunning views tho!

Arrived the night before a wedding and stayed for 2 nights. We had the theatre attic room and it was lovely. The room was quite small but had everything we needed and the en suite had a good shower. If we stay again I would request the same room although my limited mobility made the narrow stairs a little difficult. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and were very knowledgeable about the house and grounds. The evening meal was so good we would visit just for the restaurant if we lived closer! All in all a lovely stay.

We brought visiting friends here for afternoon Tea and snacks after a trip to the local caves. They were impressed with the website and wanted to experience what the castle had to offer. It turned out to be a very cold shoulder! The two female receptionists completely ignored us on arrival. Not even a smile let alone a polite hello. All of the sitting rooms were empty, except for four people sitting in the bar where we stood for just over ten minutes waiting for someone to serve us. Nobody arrived. We could not find one member of staff to ask for assistance so we simply gave up and left. The two receptionists still had their heads down and ignored us as we walked to the exit. Cold, unwelcoming and definitely not recommended. There was more life on the Mary Celeste!

Attended a wedding at Craig Y Nos - what a fabulous day. Weather was perfect which always helps. Staff were fantastic, and the conservatory was beautiful. Opera house for the Wedding Ceremony - totally unique. Food was great, but would have been better if I had been warm. When there are a large number of guests, really need extra numbers on the service. Evening food good, although a little sparse; some extra salads would have been good.

Isolated but picturesque setting, surprisingly much smaller than portrayed in online pictures. We had expected something more opulent and atmospheric on the interior, however we were surprised at how small it actually is, with a small reception that has the look and feel of a youth hostel but without the friendly greeting. However the bar and restaurant staff were engaging, likeable and very friendly.

Myself and my wife booked a night in this Hotel, as a fact finding mission, with a view to taking a party of around 60 guests there for a special occasion in 2019. We were hoping for something a bit special and the internet description and pictures seemed to give us all the right impressions. After driving 4 hours to get there from West Sussex, we were very dissapointed almost every aspect baring the beautiful surrounding coutryside. The quite impressive outside "Castle like" appearance is let down terribly as soon as you walk through the door. This place is very tired throughout. Lounges of which there were about 3 were all quite cold and unwelcoming apart from the only one that had a log burner lit in it. There was also a rather off putting smell of cooking fat that seemed to seep everywhere on the ground floor. We booked a table for our evening meal but cancelled it again quickly, after reading the rather un-enticing offerings on the menu + the smell wasnt helping much. Our room (No.28) was average to say ther least....,with a decent bathroom.....BUT people in ther car park could actually see you on the toilet...,unless you had the curtains closed at all times!. The loo roll holder kept falling off the wall.....,and drawer handles came off. The rooms, corridors, and public areas all had a very tatty tired feel to them, despite it's somewhat "Majestic" appearence from outsite.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights. The hotel is clean, very helpful and courteous staff. The lounges and bar area are very comfortable. The bar is limited on draught beers but a good choice of bottled beer, wines and spirits. Breakfast was either continental or full english which is very good quality. The evening meals are excellent but a bit pricey. Our room ( 14 ) was clean and tidy with a nice view of the Brecons. Our 1 and only gripe, the bed was very uncomfortable,so much so that I did not sleep well. Apart from that we had a great short break.

I ate every night in this restaurant during my stay just gone, and the food was amazing Nice mixture starters and mains and of course the desserts. The variety was particularly important to me. Each night there were those little extra surprises in the starters and mains, ranging from lovely soups to Mushroom Nut Roast for the vegetarians , the last evening I had a really tasty curry lots of flavor with starters of samosas all unique. The presentation of the foods on the plates made the foods very inviting and tantalizing to the palate.

My partner and I received a long weekend break which included a ghost hunt. When we arrived this was with mixed feelings due to the fact we had three dogs and were on the first floor. They must have had this in mind because we had our own back staircase to the courtyard so did not have to walk them through the castle. Our room was comfortable but the major positive was the food. The breakfasts were 5star the staff were very helpful and friendly. On the Friday my partner compliment the chef on the duck two way which he said was the best cooked he had ever had ( he knows his duck). The ghost tour was fabulous and Steve was a character, there was no rushing you out of this tour it just went with the flow. We would not hesitate to recommend to others. There is no shame in having dogs a bit misbehaved everyone loves dogs here. There was a wedding while we were here and it looked like a fabulous venue to get wed. The grounds are fabulous for walking dogs and we would definitely return. Also we had a tour of the castle which was delightful and the lady new so much about the castle she was a credit to there staff team.

We rented the 'Cottage' from here, it's part of their offering but about 3 miles from the Castle. Can't speak highly enough of the cottage, it's simply divine. The Castle is in a constant state of refurbishment but that doesn't affect the primary areas at all. The staff are great and the food is fine for the price. They LOVE dogs and that is obvious. The history of the place alone is worth the visit and make sure you do the tour which is free for guests. Loved it there.

We were here at the B&B for a short midweek break as it was dog-friendly. Talking just about the restaurant, we ate at the restaurant on the first night of arrival as we did not want to go to the effort of finding a place to eat. It was a pleasure to eat there, as a table was ready when we had checked in to the castle. The bonus is the Patti Bar is dog-friendly, and the staff were very friendly to our dog, who was with us for all the meals. We ordered drinks and had starters and mains, which came promptly. The food was delicious, but vegetables for the mains (we ordered 2 steaks) was limited to a small plate between the 2 of us, which was very little. Price of our dinner came up to £80 for 2 small glasses of Rose wine, 2 pints of beer, 2 starters and 2 mains. A bit pricey for the amount/quantity of food and drink, but tasty nevertheless. The breakfast (as part of the midweek deal we had) on the other hand was much better - filled with bacon and sausages and eggs. It was the highlight of the day for our dog, as she was served her sausage breakfast on arrival, before any of us could get any food!

Not locals so not bigging it up on behalf of owners - used it as a stopover B&B on our way down from NE of England to Pembrokeshire.Arrived in the gloom of an evening overcast but were stuck by the imposing building in a beautiful setting and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.If you like pristine highly sanitized rooms in a nebulous warehouse converted into hotel rooms such as Premier Inn/ Holiday Express - the accommodation will not probably be to your liking. The rooms are old (no surprises there) and have old rooms quirks. Bed was extremely comfortable, rooms really spacious and the bathrooms well equipped although our lacked a towel rail ? Plenty of hot water.Staff were lovely and anxious to please. Breakfast was superb - as I had hope - decent bacon and sausage - not some tasteless supermarket fare. The guide paperwork in the rooms was well done and explained the labour of love the owner is undertaking to try and keep an old and very expensive building 'alive'. He knows and understands the shortcomings that come with providing a hotel based on such an old infrastructure and I wish him all the best in his endeavours. Constructive comments - we might have eaten our evening meal there had there been sample menus available on line - really interesting place - would recommend it and would stay again which is always in my view the acid test

We went as a family of 5 adults and 1 child for the wedding fayre and decided to have a Sunday lunch there. It was a very big mistake.First of all they brought the wrong food to us and it was another tables, my daughter and I are both vegans and we knew straight away that ours weren't right but when we told the waitress she insisted it was vegan? After realising that she brought the meals to the wrong table she quickly took them away and we were then left waiting for our meal for another 10 minutes. The vegetables came in tureens to share between us all, the carrots were so hard that we could not eat them, they left the skin on them and the green tufts which would have been OK if they had been nice carrots. The new potatoes were served in their skins which was good by us all BUT the roots that were coming out of the potatoes were over 1/2 inch long and these were on at least 2/3rds of them, disgusting. My eldest daughter left her beef because it was too tough to chew. The meal wasn't cheap, we did complain, the waitress said that she would let the chef know and didn't offer to knock anything off the price of the food even though she could see that most of it was being returned. We will never return here.

We visited the restaurant as an included part of a Groupon stay. From past experience we were expecting a slightly lesser quality meal than if we'd been paying full price.Unusually, we decided on starters also (we usually go for the desserts, but didn't really fancy what was available). An included (small) glass of wine went down well but we needed to order another (cunning ploy!). My starter was deep fried sole goujons with a garlic mayonnaise. Not perhaps freshly made but very acceptable. My wife's was bruschetta which was also very tasty.Mains were spinach and ricotta cannelloni for my wife (3 extra veggie choices in addition to what was listed on the menu) and beef medallions with spiced (not very) fried potatoes. My wife had no complaints and the beef was probably the most tender I've ever eaten (and I've eaten lots!)I managed a desert after the waitress's description of 3 layers of chocolate - dark white and milk served with ice cream. Light and delicious. Full price for my 3 courses would have been only £26.85. I've paid that for main course only in other restaurants! The whole dining experience would have received unconditional praise, from the food itself to the friendliness of the staff - but . . . we didn't realise dogs would be allowed where we ate - a lovely window table in the bar with fabulous views - which in itself was not too much of a problem. However, we really objected to waitresses, bar and kitchen staff making a huge fuss of one dog, then continuing to serve food and drinks without washing their hands.Health and safety would have a field day!!They really should have known better.

We were a party of 7, plus a small dog, looking for an evening meal. So we selected this place pretty much on the basis that they accepted dogs. They were more than accepting, but very welcoming to us and our small Jack Russell. They reserved an area in the bar for people with dogs, but the table was beautifully laid out and the staff extremely helpful and friendly. The menu was quite short, but I took that as a good omen. This was proved right when our food arrived. Very tasty, generous portions and timely service.Top marks for food and service! The place itself is quirky - but we prefer that. Much better than an anodyne chain restaurant. Will call again, and as we don't live locally, may stay the nightThe hotel boasts a theatre, built by the 19th Century Opera Singer, Adelina Patti. That was of particular interest for us, but a suprise none the less

This review is for our visit to Craig Y Nos for Christmas lunch, we were a party of 4 adults,my husband and I, and my husbands elderly parents. First I would like to say that the building is a very beautiful place, however, it is also very cold. During our lunch we noticed other guests putting on their coats and scarfs and one young women was trying to warm her hands on a tea light. I feel the Craig Y Nos website should inform visitors of the fact that this is a very cold environment and that visitors should be prepared for the low temperatures. It was very unpleasant sitting in such a cold place, and taking into account that my father-in-law is 90 years old and feels the cold more, what should have been an enjoyable experience turned out to be quite unpleasant. Once we settled my in-laws at the table we made our way to the bar, what a disaster, the girl serving was having trouble finding the correct wines for another guest and we waited for 15 minutes before we were served. On returning to our table we found my in-laws eating their starter and my husband and I found our starters on the table. I had ordered pate and was served a white roll with the pate, which is quite unusual as pate is normally served with small slices of toast or bread and there was no taste to the pate.. We thought the main meal would make-up for the disappointment of the starters, however, things just got worse. The main course arrived cold and as there was no salt or pepper on any of the tables, I asked for salt and pepper. The waitress took a long time and when she returned with the salt and pepper it was too late as we had finished our cold meal as we were really hungry.. No gravy jug was placed on the table, my meal was very dry and my mother-in-law who does not like gravy found that gravy had already been poured over her meat. This was supposed to have been a Christmas dinner, however, when the vegetables arrived (cold), there was no cabbage, no swede, instead we were served mangetouts, sweetcorn and under-cooked sprouts and cauliflower. However, the beef was cooked to perfection. The roast potatoes were also under-cooked and were really hard in the middle. We were offered no sauces such as horseradish or cranberry. My partner asked for sauces and had finished his meal by the time it arrived. I have eaten better meals in local cafes. I informed the waitress that the food was cold and she said she would speak with the chef, however, no one returned to apologize or to provide any explanation. This is the worst place I have ever eaten and the waiting staff although pleasant enough did not seem to know what they were doing, one staff member told me her shift finished at 4pm and she could not wait to get home, neither could I. When we were served dinner 4 waitresses appeared at our table each carrying a plate and I have never seen this in any restaurant I have visited. The negatives far outweighed the positives and the only positive was the beautiful building in which we had what was to be the worst meal I have ever eaten. I would also say that this restaurant is not suitable for anyone with any walking problems as the toilets are down quite a flight of stairs and on asking if there were any nearer toilets for the disabled I was told the only toilets were the ones down the long flight of stairs. There is also no handrails so anyone who needs the assistance of handrails will have difficulty descending and climbing the stairs. The management should make it clear on their website that the building is freezing and suitable clothing is needed and of the unsuitability of the toilets for disabled guests. I hope this review helps those who are considering eating at Craig y nos as I wish I had read the reviews before I booked Christmas lunch. I did not feel the price was unreasonable £60 for a Christmas lunch as the menu looked really good, however, I can now say I have paid much less for meals that were cooked well, hot, organised and I was able to eat them in a warm comfortable environment. Never again will I or my family, friends or colleagues eat at Craig y nos as they ruined what should have been a special day by serving up what they called a Christmas lunch.

We dropped in without booking hoping to get lunch. I was with my friend and her disabled dad. They were able to offer us a table and from the start the experience was excellent. The staff member ( I think it was the Manager) came out to the car park to see if we needed any help with the wheelchair. We were promptly seated and drinks and food order taken quickly. All members of staff were polite and friendly. The food came in a good waiting time and we were all really pleased with the food. I had an ultimate burger, my friend a Thai beef dish and her dad an all day breakfast. Great portion sizes, hot and all tasty. Really reasonably priced as well ! Thankyou for such a great experience

Friendly staff, hearty, simple menu, great coffee. We stopped here after walking Crickhowell to Brecon via the Black Mountains. They weren’t bothered about muddy boots but we took off at door anyway. Toilets immaculate. Chef’s playlist that could be heard in the dining area - not a bad song on it for about an hour. Good on him!!

We stopped here to break up a long journey. Straight away it seemed very unwelcoming. My son is autistic, and because he seemed more comfortable in the corner section we asked to move tables. We were advised that was the dog friendly section, and obviously we would move if needed, it was quiet at the time, but this seem like an inconvenience to move tables. Then when my son was wandering in the pub, this seemed to annoy a couple of guests, and I know he seemed hyperactive but these are some of his autistic traits, this seemed to annoy one couple in particular, where the man was making very rude comments ( I know you have no control over who comes into your pub) but overall it just felt very unwelcoming in there. Are kids not allowed in here? It didn't seem like it. We come past this pub often, so we will not be stopping here again.

My wife and I were staying in a B&B in Berriew which didn’t cook evening meals on a Sunday, so we decided to try this inn for our dinner. We arrived without reservations, but were quickly shown to a table by a very pleasant member of staff who immediately took our drinks order. The drinks arrived and we ordered our food soon after. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive, and it looked very well presented. My wife had lasagne, which she told me was hot and tasty, however my steak and ale pie with chips was not quite so. Again, my meal was hot, but the meat in the pie was very grisly, which was a shame as the pastry was excellent. The chips and beans with my meal were first class, so absolutely no problems with them. As we ate our meal the chef came out and asked if everything was okay with the food. I told him about the meat in the pie, to which he laughed and then walked away. Now, what’s the point in asking me about my meal if you are not going to take action when you receive such a comment? Anyway, we finished the meal and went up to the bar to pay, at which time we were asked again if all was okay. I told the member of staff at the bar about the meat and this time it had a totally different outcome, in that someone, whom I took to be the manager, became involved, and she showed concern about the fact that my meal had not been perfect. She also told me that she would be having words with the supplier about said pie. We ended the conversation coming to an amicable agreement of a goodwill gesture, so I’m more than happy with the outcome. If it had not have been for the issue with the pie then this meal would have been almost perfect, in that the staff were lovely, the restaurant was clean and in a good state of decoration, and the service was first rate. My only other comment would be that the prices were a tad dearer than around my home city of Leicester, but not unusual for a country inn.
