The service at The Great Court was exceptional. Our server was attentive and friendly, taking the time to explain the menu and suggest popular dishes. They ensured our drinks were refilled promptly and checked in regularly without being intrusive. The staff's genuine hospitality made us feel welcome and appreciated throughout our meal. Overall, a fantastic experience that complemented the delicious food perfectly! Really recommend it as for the location it’s not crazy expensive. My favourite restaurant ever!!!

Can't believe we paid £72 (£36pp on line pre booked) for the equivalent of 2 sandwiches a a few bitesize cakes. The sandwiches were obviously pre prepared and kept in the fridge as they were cold and hard. The cakes and scones were good. We chose coffee instead of tea and slugged another £8 when we asked for a 2nd cup. Hello, for £72 you could at least do a coffe top up. The coffee was really good though. So with the £5 per person museum donation and the service charge we were welll out of pocket £100. Staff were lovely, helpful and service was great. Hope staff are paid well. Personally I felt ripped off. This was my first British afternoon tea and I expected something a little special...learnt my lesson.

afternoon tea with some friends visiting town. We had some drama getting in the building because the BM now has timed entry during peak season, so we missed our reservation. In the end the staff found us a place in a surprisingly empty restaurant, so we're not sure what the fuss was about. The tea itself wasn't great. All the appropriate gestures, but the sandwiches were dry, and cakes weren't that nice. The scones and cream were fine, so perhaps we should have gone for the cream tea instead. It would certainly have been much cheaper. The staff were fine within the limits of what they could do.

With the vast amounts of exhibits in British Museum, even for a quick tour a whole day is needed. To maximize the time in the museum, we decided to have lunch inside and made a reservation at Great Court Restaurant beforehand. After finishing the tour at the lower-level galleries, we went to the restaurant to check whether we could be seated earlier than the original booking time. Although the restaurant was very busy, fortunately a table was available at the corner. There was a lunch set but we have opted for a la carte. For the starters we had Yorkshire Grilled Asparagus, with Stracciatella cheese, hazelnuts, and burnt lemon dressing, as well as Portland Crab Cocktail, which includes also Quail’s eggs, spiced lime avocado, Marie Rose sauce, and caviar. For the main course we had Pan-fried Wild Sea Bream, with Aubergine caponata, red pepper tapenade, and lemon gremolata. The other one we picked was Confit Duck Leg, which included Jersey Royal potatoes, young leeks, peas, ‘nduja butter fried egg, and smoked bacon. Together with a bottle of water, a glass of white wine, a bottle of coke, and a cup of coffee, the bill is £92. The food was mediocre and probably no surprise as no sophisticated diners will come to a museum for food. But we still preferred this over the other cafes, as they were simply too busy and messy with too many customers. Perhaps the other alternative of eating outdoor will be the better option.

Eten zelf is oké. - het is schandalig prijzig . Locatie is niet gezellig. .

The insoluble problem was that I had purchased my two-course meal in advance on the British Museum website. Thus, the restaurant could not refund my money. Having had great experiences in other London museum dining rooms, I decided to order the fish and chips as my main course. I figured it would have to be extraordinary. It was. It was a disappointment when I saw it, but I soldiered on. THe food was dry. The thin hard chips and the fish soon grew cold. I asked for tartar sauce to supplement what was provided. Also vinaigrette, thinking I could improve it.I dug the protein from the hard fat case that surrounded the fish. I told the nice waitress that it had not been very good. She called the manager who was sympathetic but said she could not refund my money because I had bought the meal through the British Museum. The half meal I ate was sufficiently unpleasant that I could not accept her offer for another meal, coffee or certainly not dessert. I ended up getting my sparking water for free and they waived the service charge. Soon after I left I needed to return to use their toilettes. As the other women using them verified the toilets didn’t flush and had become unpleasant. A memorable meal indeed. Staff was pleasant but could not make it right. A total waste of my money and not very good for my health.

Had a late lunch here while visiting the British Museum. Service was adequate. I had the risotto appetizer. It was a very generous portion for a starter and presented beautifully - quite colorful. It arrived hot right out of the kitchen. However, it was oddly bland and needed salt. I don’t generally salt my food, but this needed it. The fish and chips also came hot right out of the kitchen. It was accompanied by shoestring chips and smashed peas. The smashed peas were absolutely delicious (the best part of the meal) - they were bright green and had a hint of mint. Next time, I’ll just order a bowl of smashed peas and be done. 🙂 The fish also came with tar tar sauce that was very tasty. This was a nice place to rest and refuel after walking around the museum for several hours.

I always think when writing a review these few questions. Was it a neat experience? Yes. Was it worth the money? No. Would you do it again? No. If I can't say yes to all of them, then I don't recommend. We did it because I wanted to experience an real English tea and thought this location would be perfect for my first experience. Location was perfect. The tea was fun served in teapots and pretty little tea cups. The food was presented lovely. It wasn't great but was horrible either. We asked for water and sodas and paid through the nose for them so beware. It wasn't crowded, tad noisy with the echoes from below, but not so we couldn't converse.

Hats off to this place, it is busy but well run with excellent waiting staff delivering really good food. One feature I find with restaurants in museums in the UK, is they often serve really good food, with varied menus. Here is no exception. The restaurant was packed and with a diverse clientele it copes when say, one diner orders a cream tea at the same time as another on the table orders fries! Alas, I can't specifically recall the dishes we had, but they were all tasty. My chicory starter and beetroot wellington were simply delicious, and the wine menu is also excellent. Well worth it, highly recommended if you're there based on our experience.

We are a party of six visiting London and wanted to see the British Museum and had read about the Great Court Restaurant, its special location within the museum, and their very competitively priced afternoon tea. We booked both well in advance to be sure of availability. That was fortunate becasue the lines to the museum were huge if you had not booked in advance. We were escorted to a special private area reserved for a large party which was just for us. It was incredible! The afternoon tea was superb. We were all so very impressed.

Interesting location. Had booked. We arrived via the lift and rudely told to go to the front reception on the other side of the restaurant. As it was near Christmas I opted for the stuffed turkey with char grilled carrots and brussell sprouts. The sprouts were al dente to the point of not being cooked and no sign of having been near a grill. The carrots not quite as raw. Very small amount of cranberry and the turkey itself was pleasant enough though the parma ham coating was a bit hard. Served with a small dauphinoise potato which was pleasant enough. Ordered quickly from the dessert menu and cant actually remember what the full title was but something that started with sticky toffee pudding. It tasted a bit raw and was covered in some kind of soft coating like a melted roulade but didnt really taste of anything. Few small figs on top. Wife had coley and chips and a pear panacotta which was well cooked. Had booked online and saved 10% but then cancelled out by the compulsory service tip. Total cost about £65 after two soft drinks. My wife did better than me but it was one of the poorer meals I have ever had. Service was OK. Pricey and simply not very good.

Disappointing. We arrived at 3pm without a booking and there were tables available for us. After 3pm they only serve “afternoon tea“ but we were a party of vegans and vegetarians so the four different types of sandwiches would have to be substituted for one vegetarian type (egg, so nothing for the vegan). They can accommodate vegans if you order 24 hours in advance (this is a gluten-free/vegan option in one although it is not clear from the online menu that they would need 24 hours notice to make a this sandwich). This is a beautiful venue and used to be run as a lovely restaurant, sadly it no longer feels like that. There was no real attempt to accommodate us, and we ended up eating in the canteen downstairs, which I think is run by the same company so they have lost nothing. It is sad we can no longer enjoy the Great Court Restaurant, if this was a standalone restaurant they would be trying harder but, like hotel restaurants all over the world, they have a constant stream of easy customers so no need to go the extra mile for those of us who are a little more difficult.

I came to the British Museum as I was visiting London for the day. I decided to stop for lunch. This place is a hidden gem nestled on the top floor of the British museum. The service was first class, great etiquette from the staff. I had the cod and chips, in all honesty this restaurant over exceeded my expectations. The meal wasn’t greasy, the presentation was great, and above all the price was very reasonable for such a premium location. In all honesty, if I am visiting this part of London again, rather than going to a nearby restaurant I would gladly go out of my way to come into the British Museum to eat here.

Expensive afternoon tea, not worth £42. Tea was not even included in the price! We hadn’t booked and they said they could put us on one of the high tables, but would need it back after one hour, even though the restaurant was not that busy. The small sandwiches were definitely made earlier and were quite hard, and also just 4 of them. The cakes were uninspiring and lack lustre, the jam for the scones came in a jar. The setting is very pleasant, but the food in the lower level cafe definitely looked better and was much cheaper.

Being right in the middle of the British Museum, its location is unbeatable. Service was good, but somehow the setting is completely devoid of atmosphere ... I think I was expecting somethimg more in keeping with the solidity and permanence of the museum itself. And the afternoon tea was less than wonderful. It seemed like the sandwiches had been made quite a few hours earlier. They weren't curling at the edges, but the bread had clearly dried out. Not a great deal

Nearly missed out on a great afternoon tea experience due to the negative reviews, however, really glad looked beyond these. Pre-booked online with vouchers. And in fact, going in with such low expectations really made it feel even more amazing. Did not encounter any rude staff, the front of house and our waitress were friendly and helpful. We were seated immediately to a lovely cushioned area. Service was swift yet not rushed. Everything felt fresh (no stale sandwiches experienced like with other reviews), the scones are not warmed up (but this is not unexpected), the desserts were all fresh, beautifully presented and really delicious. Some reviews mentioned it was noisy, I do not like noisy environments and could not have felt more calm and relaxing, there was a quite buzz of guests but all at a respectful level. Thoroughly enjoyable experience and exceeded expectations.

My friend and I both ordered a starter and a portion of chips (as a main course) plus a glass of wine each. The waitress who had taken our order only a few minutes earlier gave the wines to the wrong person. The chips were soggy and pretty tasteless but we were both starving so ate them anyway. I ordered the apricot and frangipane tart as a desert. It was disgusting - a large wedge with a thick gunky layer of stuff purporting to be frangipane and a couple of very manky looking apricots. I had one mouthful only. While we were eating, a waitress was very clumsily clearing a nearby table. Two glasses went flying and smashed on the floor, the bits flying everywhere. A very perfunctory job of sweeping up was done, with bits of glass still remaining on the floor. Our bill for two including coffes and service was £63. I told the waitress my view of the chips and the desert which she said she would report to the kitchen.

Food sub-standard: only one vegetarian starter which my guest did not want; my mackerel good but accompanying ingredients all without taste. We had the aubergine and cauliflower Main but although it arrived looking good, the variety of tastes all on top of each other didn't work. For pudding we had the meringue roulade but ours contained no noticeable meringue, instead much solid cream. It was as if the dishes had been chosen and prepared but no one had thought to taste to determine whether worth eating, which they were not. Service friendly and helpful.

I've had a lot of afternoon teas in London throughout the years, ranging from the cheap and affordable to very high-end and expensive. I expected the British Museum at £33pp to fall somewhere in the middle, but the quality was even poorer than the cheapest afternoon teas I've sampled (that were £15-£17.50). The restaurant itself lacks ambiance. I did not realise it was completely out, smack-down in the middle of the museum, but this meant it was very noise with the buzz of visitors throughout. It also looked very grubby (the stairs to the toilets and the toilets itself were questionable). The tea itself was presented well and the staff were very friendly (hence the 2 stars) but the quality, especially for the price point was subpar: - Extremely cold sandwiches with bread that quickly turned stale (clearly was not freshly made and left in a too cold fridge for too long). - Scones were adequate but not reminiscent of earl grey (they were supposed to be); just plain old raisin scones, indistinguishable from a supermarket packet, served with too little jam and clotted cream. - Cakes were very poor, flour-y and earthy tasting. The lemon meringue their only saving grace. - Finally, and this was perhaps my own fault, I asked for a top up for my tea but the tea bag was too weak and the second round of tea was nearly translucent. I would've appreciated a recommendation to replace the tea bag and not just add water. Very disappointed I spend so much and only managed to eat the sandwiches, 1 cake, and 1 scone with weak tea.

As an English couple who have sampled a lot of afternoon teas, this doesn’t rate that highly. I think it is more suited to tourists who haven’t sampled many teas. The sandwich fillings were fine and the assortment of bread different, if only the bread had been fresh rather than stale. Scones fine, and whilst only one pot of jam for two scones, the minuscule bit of cream was hardly enough for one scone. The tea was so weak, we had it without milk. The four cakes were ok. I do not think they had any plates left either, as they brought us saucers to eat from and said they were plates, however everybody else having tea had a proper plate. I could have complained but it was very busy and couldn’t be bothered. If you want a proper afternoon tea, go elsewhere.

Did not expect the greatest since after all it’s in a museum. Service was rather poor and completely inattentive. You wait a while till you are even asked. Then you get the dish and that’s it, except if he has forgotten to bring the plates....

Good service despite the place being very busy. Full marks. Mains were excellent (I recommend the wild mushroom gnocchi), but the desserts weren't so impressive. In fact they looked and tasted as if they had been bought in. Surely not ?? Neither of the hand...

I returned here to use a Groupon voucher. Once again I had a nice lunch, tasty food, good size portions and a relaxing time and all in the special location.

We decided to go here for lunch after spending a few hours in the museum. Location is lovely, it is a nice setting. We were seated promptly, which was positive, and it seemed busy. Got given menus and someone took our drinks orders. Drinks came,...

Tasty food, an imaginative menu and reasonable value for money considering the location. It's a great setting - up under the roof of the Great Court structure. Service was quick and efficient. I'd advise booking at weekend, but it didn't seem to be necessary for...

We ate lunch in this restaurant courtesy of a Groupon voucher, which proved to be excellent value. The fish was delicious. This is a busy restaurant in a busy museum, so the service can, at times, appear "matter of fact". However, we would definitely repeat...

The restaurant has a superb position under the faceted British Museum great court glass ceiling - 3 floors up from the hubbub of the crowds, Wed had a light lunch of soup folowed by salad. All the details were pefect - generous serving of sour dough with the delicious soup. Beautifully presented and tasty salads - not to mention the crispy sweet potato fries we ordered as an extra.

Very unfriendly staff. We weren’t allowed to sit 5 to 3pm because Afternoon Tea starts at 3 (Tables were free). We‘ve been ignored completely. Scons were bad.

Huge disappointment for both service and food. I brought a group to celebrate the end of the quarter. We were the only customers. However, no one came to the table to greet us or start pouring water. I had to get up three times to request it.

In contrast to some negative reviews we read recently, we enjoyed quick, efficient and friendly service. We had two abundannt salad plates, wine and coffee. Thanks in particular to Eveline Kinzkofer.

We were in the area for a midday function and thought we’d give this a try as I had always wanted to go there. Front of house staff were not particularly engaging and had that typical aloofness that always raises the hackles. Our waiter however was efficient if nervous. Tables are very close together in one area and we were plonked in the middle of it despite being assured we would have a nice table on booking. Hardly conducive to a business meeting. The food is OK but over priced and small portions, particularly the fish and chips which are cheaper and much larger in The Ivy cafe branches. Won’t be returning despite enjoying Benugos other offerings at the Museum, especially the Members’ Room.

We had late'ish lunch on the Troy Exhibition opening day and were glad to get a spacious quiet table at the end of the space, with a good outlook over the open space below. We were a bit disappointed that there wasn't a set lunch menu with seasonal specials but we tried the soup and squid to start and because it was very chilly we had one sausage/mash - which doesn't come with any vegetables and a burger. I thought the sausages looked re-heated and the burger was luke warm. The chips were greasy and some were too hard to eat. One of the waiters was very good, the server of the food almost ran off without asking us whether we wanted any sauces etc. We had to go and get the bill at the end of the meal as I think people lost interest.

The restaurant is located on the top floor of the museum. It is a quiet place among the chaos of everyday life within the museum. Tourism is almost choking the museum. Crowds are relentless and demanding. There are few quiet places in the museum just to sit a reflect on how extraordinary hothead British Museum is. It can be overwhelming to the new visitor. The restaurant is comfortable. Service is good. The food is warming on a cold day. The soup is always worth considering and the pasta dishes are a specialty. Worth a visit.

Absolutely delicious desserts here lovely & open restaurant, welcoming staff and prompt service. I enjoyed a peppermint tea with a yummy berry cheesecake! It was just right, soft, melting in your mouth cheesecake layer, perfect amount of sweetness & fresh and scrumptious berries No doubt the rest of the dessert menu must be as good or even better!

We went to the museum and got hungry. When we got to the restaurant, we we informed that they can only serve coffee and cakes, no actual food. Plus, if you’re vegan, you have to order the food 24 hours before. The staff were really unpleasant too. We wouldn’t recommend it at all.

Criticise Starbucks all you like but serving a decent cup of coffee is the one thing that they do well - loads better than Costa amongst others. The only better one is Roasting Plant Coffee in the Strand but then that place is several rungs up the ladder

Extremely overpriced for juices with basically mostly contain ice water! Charging £7 for this is pure cheek though they were busy so people are clearly willing to pay for it. Very loud, dirty tables as they don't have enough staff to clean and serve, and disappointing they do not have a toilet as they do serve food. Will not go again.

My mum and I popped in late July. Had a lovely milky coffee (trad caff order!) and we shared a few fresh pastries. Staff were polite and helpful and gave us a bag to take home what pastries we couldn't finish.
