An old fashioned, but none the worse for that, station cafe. Beautifully kept with a wide range of snacks

All our trips to London start right here. One of us gets the tickets the other gets the bacon butties and drinks. (£3 - butty, £1.50 -tea). Fabulous. Friendly service and consistent good quality. Great way to start a journey.

Called at this cafe this morning for a cup of tea before catching the train to London. Excellent tea and very friendly service. I left my handbag behind after finishing my tea, without even realising. As I sat on the train waiting for it to depart, the man who had served me boarded the train with my handbag, walking through the train to see who had left it behind. How thoughtful and what great customer service. My day would have been completely ruined otherwise.

Simply the best. I challenge anyone to find a more friendly cafe serving better food anywhere in the UK. Alan and his team are superlative hosts, never short of good humour and always happy to go the extra mile. The homemade food is delicious and varied, yet none of the basic commuter snacks are missing. Personally I find the filter coffee as good as you can get and the bacon rolls are a real treat if you have to get an early train. The only word of warning is don't listen to any of Alan's betting tips unless you have deep pockets...

My wife pops in to the buffet in the mornings...now simply to buy a paper and a bottle of water and no longer risks buying anything else, I visit after lunch and it is dreadful. A 60s Travelers Fare throwbackService is by a very scruffy, unkempt guy....big sloppy sweater, shirt hanging out, unshaven. Coffee from the pour and serve is undrinkable and left, and a bacon sandwich was filled with bacon cooked off earlier in the morning. The buffet itself is full of character but worn out and really grubby, and quite frankly needs just a tad updating. Staff should be cleaned up and uniformed. There is no excuse for scruffiness or grubby premises.I never thought for one moment that I would pine for a Starbucks or better still a Pret, but almost anything would be better than this.

This is a delightful station buffet. Obviously a privately owned business as no chain could match this establishment. Good coffee and very pleasant service from the staff. The flooring needs a little attention, otherwise - spot on.

This is an old fashioned Railway buffet in the spirit of Brief Encounter but the service is superb, very quick and Alan always has a smiling face and a cheery word to greet travellers. Would that he also ran a catering service on the trains down to Kings Cross too!

A cooked breakfast, if you have time, or a generously filled bacon sandwich if you are hurrying for a train are the very least you should award yourself having found this friendly little station buffet. Compared to the overpriced, tasteless dross served by unsmiling robots that passes for catering on most of the transport network I can only wonder how this place escaped. I suspect probably that the owner is behind the counter every day, or at least every time I have been there. Long may it stay open and flourish.

It's strange isn't it? - that this place - the most ordinary place in the word - the refreshment room at King's Lynn station, can be so very special. The service is from another century: when I placed a big order of food to the smiling owner, her husband asked which train we were catching so that we could be served in time. The food - which was excellent - was delivered to our tab by an equally smiling and friendly waitress. I love the architecture and style of the place which is quintessentially British and understated and holds no truck with the fashionable or modern. As we were leaving an elderly man with learning difficulties entered. He was obviously well known to the staff. The patience and gentleness with which he was treated confirmed that I was indeed in a very special place. I now visit every time I go down to London and find myself leaving early from home so that I can linger a little longer. It is just the place for a brief encounter...

It's only a station buffet - but one that's very out of the ordinary. King's Lynn is an end-of-the-line station, old-fashioned, friendly, well-maintained, and the Buffet Bar is a terrific place to relax in before or after your journey. It's been in continuous operation as an independently owned and run enterprise for over a century, and the current owners have run it for, I believe, almost a quarter of that time. Its bacon rolls are legendary; coffee is fresh and filter, tea is made in the pot, it's fully licensed, the selection of snacks and drinks is fine, and the choice of newspapers and magazines on sale is huge. But what really sets it apart is the warm, friendly service, a real sense of caring about each and every customer. 10 minutes before each hourly train to Cambridge and London is due to depart, extra staff magically appear to make sure everyone can buy what they need for the journey, without the usual stress. There are plenty of excellent dining options in King's Lynn, but I highly recommend you stop off here for a drink and/or snack if you're travelling by train - it's a million miles from the usual chain outlets you find at most train stations, and all the better for it.
