The food here is really awful, they use cheap cuts of meat but charge the same as other restaurants that provide good quality meat. Returned sirloin steak as it was substandard, it resembled frying steak rather that sirloin- thin, chewy and tough- definitely could not justify £18.95. I chose the burger as a replacement for the ‘sirloin’ unfortunately the quality was also poor, have had much better burgers from chip shops- thin, over processed, cheap meat & really bland. My partner had the rump streak, marginally better than the ‘sirloin’ but to be honest I’ve purchased more substantial steaks from Tesco at £3.50 each. The staff were pleasant and helpful, but because of the unacceptable standard of the food we definitely won’t be returning.

Tried The Counties on the off-chance as most other places were full. I guess the alarm bell should have rung when we realised the place was almost empty, not so long ago when it was the Ramada it was always busy. Our food came quickly, again not a great sign, I had opted for the burger which looked good but was just warm rather than hot, however it was replaced and very tasty too. My wife’s meal was covered in black burnt food simply because chefs don’t clean the grill, this too was replaced. In fairness they offered us free drinks but when the bill arrived these were charged. Rather than create more fuss we paid and left but it will be a while before trying it again. There’s much better in Portrush that is consistently good, maybe just that the Counties does not yet have the consistency as other reviews are good.

Monday lunchtime in Portrush or rather Xmas Eve Monday in Portrush. There really isn't much choice but someone suggested here so we went. It has a good view over the small harbour and plenty of seating, but in terms of what food is on offer - forget it. Basically soup of the day was a thin, bland vegetable concoction albeit served with a decent hunk of bread. Very little choice for a decent dessert to cheer you up afterwards. So all in all, rather a drab choice.

Was here at the weekend with my family and friends. We booked a table as we had a large group. Service is brilliant and the food was tasty but it was such a poor amount for the price! I believe I paid 9.95 for a handful of skinny fries and the smallest grilled chicken i have ever seen. The fries didnt apear until after i was handed the chicken and it just looked lost on the massive plate ... it looked more like a starter to be honest. Iv never been so disapointed in the size of food ever!! My husbands burger was massive and cost less! I was so hungry afterwards.

Returned for 1st time in several years, pleasantly surprised by quality of food. 3 different burgers at our table, all delicious! £7.95 with fries is very good value. Not sure of the black baps though, taste fine, but just leave them white please. 1 gluten free at our table was not a problem to the staff.

We have always liked the Ramada. But had a poor lunch on Sunday. You may think this is picky but there were a lot of little details they got wrong. My wife had a Steak sandwich which wasn’t great, disappointing as The Ramada of old never put out sub standard food. I had a Bangers, Mash and Summer Veg. I think this lunch needs a reasonable quality pork sausage, mash and a good gravy (preferably an onion gravy). The sausages were beef even though the menu didn’t state that, the mash was actually champ (again the menu stated Mash) and the gravy came in a very small gravy boat - far too little. I then asked for a little more gravy as I was running out and was given the same small amount again. That was fine, but when I got my bill it had an extra £1.95 for an insubstantial amount of gravy. I’m afraid the food was below par but to add churlishness to the experience I found to be very petty. This just isn’t the same place it used to be.

Had written this place off since it had changed hands. It went way downhill - the food was unappetizing and the hygiene rating declined from 5 to 2. Went back tonight and was pleasantly surprised. The menu was still small but the choices were appealing and the food we ordered (steak sandwich, cod and chips) was well cooked and tasty. A great improvement from last time! We didn't have puddings but I noticed that the puddings too, looked much improved - more like the attractive offerings in the Ramore. Coffee to finish off was piping hot and good quality. There is a new head chef and it shows! The waiting staff were friendly and helpful. That never changed but they were let down by the poor quality food they had to serve. It is so good to be able to enjoy a meal at The Counties (Portrush Atlantic Hotel) again.

I am just so sorry I didn't go in through the main restaurant/bar door and then I would have seen they where only given a 2 for hygiene. This place was great last year but it's really went to the dogs. I ordered a chicken salad, there was no chicken in it. I think it was tuna and it was revolting. The people who ordered beside us sent their food back because they found a hair in their food. We had to ask someone to take our order and then had to ask for our drinks after the food arrived!!! With the kids meal you are supposed to get a drink, my son who is three asked for apple juice and we asked was this ok, the young guy said yes. When my hubby went to pay they had added it to bill. When he questioned this he was told apple juice was not included in children's meal. He pointed out that we had asked waiter but they refused to removed it from bill and basically told my husband he should have read the menu!! Well I'm glad I wasn't there because I would have pointed out that I ordered the chicken salad and got sloppy unrecognisable salad instead. For a hotel in Portrush to only have a 2 rating this is very bad considering the prices they charge. My advice - go next door to the Adelphi - better food, better staff and 5 rating for hygiene.

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, going every time we stayed up at out apartment in Portrush, including all through the winter months. Then it changed hands.... We hadn't been for about a year as they took off their early bird menu, and with three small kids we always ate early and liked the menu. So...we tried it again at the start of July when I saw they had early bird on again. We were underwhelmed. The portion sizes were very small (for example, three wedges accompanying a steak?), and I complained at the fact the kids chicken nuggets were processed muck....like seriously, how hard is it for a hotel to make your own nuggets from fresh chicken?? Decided to give it another go this week but will not bad back...many better options for good food. Processed nuggets still being dished up, portion sizes still small for the price. I had the pork and leek sausages, champ and gravy. Sausages were loveky , very tasty but the champ was what can only be described as gelatinous gloup, only made palatable by the gravy. The service was very good and the staff were lovely but the quality of the food totally lets it down. Also, check your bill...both times we visited the bill had 'al a carte' prices listed instead of the early bird prices we ordered. Staff apologized and re did the bill, but I'm guessing this goes unnoticed by some people.

We headed up to Portrush and booked into the Atlantic Hotel. The check in time was 4 pm and although we arrived a little earlier our room was ready. The receptionist was friendly and gave us information about dinner etc but we didn't eat at the hotel in the evening. The hotel was busy. Plenty of families and European and American visitors in Portrush on that weekend. We headed to the Harbour bar for a pint if the best Guinness in the North of Ireland. It was buzzing.. the surf school was out .. the sailing club was out and people were just everywhere enjoying a wee drink and talking. It was just brilliant. There is a fantastic complex of restaurants at the Harbout complex. Something for everyone.. and they don't take bookings its first come first served.. there can be a wait but they don't waste any time and we enjoyed our wSit of 30 mins in the Gin bar of the Harbour bar . There was a young guy playing music and everyone was in such a good relaxing mood. We went up to the kiwi bar on the Main Street for a walk after our food which was amazing. First time in a long time I have had such a good sirloin steak , well priced and cooked to perfection. We returned to the Gin bar later as there was music to late and again we were not disappointed. We had a great notes sleep at the Atlantic and a really good hearty breakfast menu in the morning. Plenty of fruit and cereal.. cooked breakfast was plentiful and warm and the staff were efficient and friendly and cleared the tables and left you plenty of space on the table to eat as much as you wanted. Some people took a yogurt or a croissant for later and this didn't seem any issue. We had a lovely night away.. and headed on round to see the Dark Hedges from Game of Thrones and came home along the coast road. A most relaxing night away and we would definitely do it again and stay longer next time. Good value for money break

Terrible, terrible and terrible. This is by far the worst place to eat in Portrush by a country mile. The old Ramada and staff were superb. This new crowd are shocking. This is my second visit, the first was terrible, poor service and sub standard food. On trip advisor they said give us another chance, so I did. How wrong was I, it was even worse if that is possible. Note; It wasn't even busy. The wait to have an order taken was unacceptable, the wait on the starter to arrive was unacceptable, the wait on the main course was so bad we paid and left, went to The Port Hotel and had a beautiful meal. So you ring to complain and there is no where else within this hotel group to complain only the general manager of the hotel?? So you complain to the very person who the buck stops with and who is not doing their job, amazing system how are things going to improve. A hotel in a town where there is a glut of good restaurants to dine at and this place is letting people walk away and have to turn to trip advisor to warn others. This crowd will answer with the same lame excuse as before, sorry you had your chance and your not getting another. Avoid people you have been warned.I had to give it one mark as it won't allow you to give it none.

Used to eat here regularly till it changed hands a year or so ago. While staff remained pleasant and helpful, the quality of the food went down. The early evening menu disappeared and that is a bad move in a town like Portrush, with everywhere else offering cheaper early evening menus.Went back today to give it another chance and was pleasantly surprised; while the new menu was very limited, the quality of food had improved. The waiter told us that the menu would be expanded. The wine list is from a new supplier; the Merlot was reasonably priced but not quite as good as the previous house Merlot(35 Degrees South).A bit more hopeful for the future of this place - the food had improved, the staff are as helpful as they ever were. To really get on its feet again, they need to expand the menu and compete with the other Portrush venues on early evening prices.Another point - reviews on this web site seem to be mixing up this restaurant and the Deerstalker / Atlantic at Kelly's Portrush.

We ate at the restaurant over the Bank Holiday weekend. It was an hour wait for the table. Then it was another half an hour after we ordered for the food to arrive. The service was really poor. There were enough staff but they were not coordinated. Poorly trained. The food was really poor quality. Overcooked chips. A chilli chicken wrap which was meant to come with an Asian salad. When I asked what that was, I was told it was 'peppers'. What arrived was a chicken wrap swimming in sweet chilli sauce with iceberg lettuce on the side and nothing else. My colleague had the beef wrap. The meat was tough. We ordered saute mushrooms. They were terrible. They looked like they came out of a tin. This is the first negative review I have written. This is part of the Ramada hotel so standards should be better.

Very convenient for us since we are staying at hotel to which the restaurant is attached. It was a late night supper for us so it was simple to eat here. They have a full menu of vegetarian options as well as an eclectic mix of cuisine including a couple of Asian fusion type of options like a stir fry with soy noodles. Their soup of the day was a nice vegetable pureed in broth. Not as heavy as I feared. Quite tasty in fact. The prawn and avocado salad I had for my main course had lots of small salad shrimps not the type of prawns that I envisioned but still quite good. The dressing worked well but a bit more than I usually like. It's a creamy blush coloured dressing a bit like the colour of thousand islands dressing. The avocado was just simply mashed and on the side and helped to cut the sweetness of the dressing. My partner had the stir fry and he enjoyed it as well. Word of caution - they mix the peanut sauce into the stir fry so be warned if you had a peanut allergy!! And put the noodles into the little pan to mix the sauce in, otherwise it's just too bland. The price was good. All that with a half-pint of Guinness for just about £21. Reasonable for the UK and cheap compared to Belfast.

Having eaten in this restaurant on many occasions was so disappointed with our meal yesterday. Indeed upon bringing the problem to the attention of a waiter was not at all happy how it was dealt with. The meal was still charged full price and only didn't charge for a diluted orange which we at that point just said we would not be dining there again.Apparently the waiter said now there is a new chef ( and not for the better ) as he didn't even know how to cook fish properly. The new menu should have been an indication when we arrived (a few A4 sheets stapled together ) as even in a ordinary cafe there would be better presented menus )

Earlier this evening we had a family meal for 8 people in the newly renamed Atlantic North restaurant in the former Ramada. The Ramore's & 55oN etc were all full, yet this place was empty which was surprising at 5.30pm in early August. We placed our orders & despite the gravy for one of the meals not arriving til the end, it was an very enjoyable & tasty meal. HOWEVER...we then got the bill & noticed a series of £2.50s & £1.50s added on to the bill. When questioned, the waitress said they were our side orders. We asked where sides not included. She said they weren't included on anything other than the burger or wraps...& not even on the kids meals. I mean, who wud expect 2 pay £5 for 2 kids sausages or 2 kids goujons on their own & then expect to pay on top for the chips? Or pay £9.25 for a dry piece of grilled chicken (with a late gravy) & then another £2.50 added on top for the mash....especially when the waitress had automatically asked each person in turn what side order they wud like with their meal! The manager then showed us the kids menu which said 'all meals served with cordial' & 'available side options are...' then it listed about half a dozen options of sides. Under that it said 'additional sides charged at £1.50.' We explained surely the word 'additional' meant that anything more than the 1st side order per meal would be charged. The manager said that was not the case & all sides were charged...even on kids meals. It made the meal A LOT more than expected. There was no apology or offer to resolve the issue. She said the owner had made the decision 2days ago to change the menu & to now charge all sides as extra & that staff were still learning the new menu so there's nothing she could do. Going by the emptiness of the restaurant it seems this place is doomed with all the competition now on the north coast. Avoid & instead get an early bird offer in one of the many surrounding restaurants. We'll not be back at this one which is a shame! & the sooner it gets a new owner the better!!!

Some very good points - friendly, very helpful staff, good service, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, BUT, I agree with a previous reviewer who said she feared the quality of the food had gone down since the hotel changed hands. We've been coming here for some time and one of my favourite dishes is now off the menu (duck legs with beautifully cooked, crisp spring greens); my other favourite (battered cod) is still on the menu but it's not the same succulent home-battered fish it used to be - it's much smaller and looks and tastes like it's from a freezer pack - okay if I wasn't used to the previous good quality. The steak seemed to be of a lesser quality too - not as tasty as it used to be.Thankfully the wine list has the same reasonable quality, reasonably priced wines. Hope they don't get clever and decide to cut costs there too. Please don't spoil this lovely restaurant by cutting corners with the food.

Some of us ordered the clam chowder starter, which tasted fine but the potato content was a bit too much so much so I thought maybe I was getting an Irish fish stew! We had eaten here before and really enjoyed it but sadly I can't say the same this time. We didn't have a reservation last Saturday night so we expected to have to wait fir a table. We were told a table would be free in 15 minutes and we're happy to wait in the bar area. We had to ask twice to see the menu so that we could save time placing our order when a table came free. They said a large party meant there was a delay but we couldn't see any large groups dining. There were several empty tables the whole time we were waiting (about 35 minutes) so we couldn't understand why we were not taken to our table sooner. I ordered the cod and was very disappointed as it was undercooked and the batter was greasy. I would not be keen to eat here again

We booked to eat at this restaurant as we were staying for the night in the Ramada Hotel which is attached. Staff were friendly and attentive and service was quite quick and obviously fresh. Good prices even though you have to purchase your sides separately for most dishes. I had the root vegetables - gorgeous! The portions are just the right size and leave a little wiggle room for a delicious dessertWe shared some hot chocolate fudge cake and ice cream and couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces. Sometimes you just got to have chocolate cake ;)Would definitely eat here again, the menu was nice and varied. Quite modern décor, clean with the lovely views out over the ocean.

The Nutrition Society postgraduate conference, hosted by Ulster University, was held here and lasted two days. The food, from the lunches to the gala dinner, was brilliant. Had the roast red pepper and tomato soup, beef with a wide selection of sides and the desserts were lovely as there was a selection of small desserts per person with a mini ice cream cone! Will definitely be back!

I am a frequent visitor to the Counties Restaurant. The menu is varied and the quality of food is second to none. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is very competitively priced and represents excellent value for money. I would recommend everyone to try the Counties

We have experienced consistent perfection in all areas. Very friendly staff, especially Belinda and Elizabeth, excellent service, followed by exquisite food. For many years we gravitated in the direction of other restaurants nearby. This is our new No.1. I struggle to find fault.Wish I could echo the above sentiment about the city restaurant we dined in this afternoon!

Had 1st class breakfast here with my youngest grown up son on the morning of Sat 6th September 2014, whilst attending the Air Show.Even though they were very busy with overnight guests having breakfast, we just walked in after coming off the train, and were shown to a table almost immediately. The food was excellent, and plenty of it. I would certainly highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting or staying in Portrush.

Had dinner here last night with my husband. Had a table booked as we're down for the air show wk.end. The place was very busy, we were seated immediately and given menus. Service was a little slow but that was to be expected but the food more than made up for it. I had the salmon and beet root which was lovely and cooked to perfection. Alongwith the dauphoise potatoes which are a must (could've had another bowl) Husband had the lamb on the bone. We were both shocked when this came out as it was half the size of the plate. Very very generous portions. All in all fab place to eat.

Ate here last night. Two tables of 10. Thought they could have ensured a better seating plan. However, the food was great. Massive portions. Although don't think you should have to pay for veg in addition to your steak. That's a bit mean. I had the chicken with Greek salad and although simple enough dish it was delicious, well presented and perfectly cooked. (The chicken that is). Drinks took a long time to arrive but the restaurant was packed. Would I eat here again. Yes definitely. It was good. Watch the floor though it's really slippy if yr in heels.

We booked a table, and got a good seat at the window overlooking the gardens by Ramore Head. That was a good start. Our welcome was very good, friendly and we were seated immediately, with someone to give us menus straight away, and take a drinks order. So far so good. The menu is a strange one though. Odd combinations, but at the same time some old favourites thrown in for good measure. If you want to make a change to any of the dishes, you have to pay a £1 fee. Odd, but the way they choose to do it. Prices are very cheap for eating out, but given that there was no queue here, as we past two other well known restaurants in Portrush with queues outside, you have to wonder why...So the food. It was nice to have the kids food delivered to the table first. That got them busy before we were able to enjoy our food. Very good idea if it was intentional. I ordered the Cesar Salad. Disaster. The burger and the sweet chilli pasta that came to our table were very good, but it looked like I had the dunce on the menu list. The dressing was terrible, and everything came uncut, just pilled up, bacon slices, chicken breasts and large iceberg lettuce leaves. Not a Cesar Salad I could get used to. So here is the long and the short of it all. This is budget food for eating out, so for that reason, an 'average' is harsh on this place. The service was good, but nothing special. The decor feels like a hotel, with is OK, not the trendy styling that other places have these days. Portions were generous too for the price, but you can't get past that this is not a 'hip' place to eat, it is a place to eat when you can't get a table at those more expensive places to eat that you would prefer to go to. Oh yes the toilets, they were good, no smell, clean, nothing fancy. Would I go back? No, not really. Wish I'd had something else on the menu is all.

Heard a lot of good reviews about the Counties but was disappointed with my visit at the weekend. Was greeted by an unfriendly waitress who seated us and threw menus on the table. Drinks order was taken and then the food. When our food arrived (which was quick I'll give them that) my bowl of pasta was saturated in oil at the bottom. The portion of chips was terribly small and not worth the money. Dessert was okay but again felt it had been thrown together. Overall I didn't think what I got was worth the money. I would try the hotel next door on my next visit as they do a 4 course menu for less than what I paid for one meal!

On arrival in Portrush on a dull blustery day we decided to pop into the counties for a coffee and to sample their homemade brownies with the view of booking our evening meal....we were pleasantly surprised when our coffee arrived we recieved some complimentary chocolate cake....the hotel was alive with activity....once we had braved the elements and gone for a long walk to build up an appetite we settled for the steaks...they were the best ive tasted in a long time, complimented perfectly with their own creamy pepper sauce...we like to try different restaurants but are always drawn back to the counties as you are always guaranteed great food and great service..would definitely recommend especially if they continue their promotional days of coffee and free cake!

My husband and I decided we would like a nice steak for tea, to save us having to cook it we stopped here, where we had always enjoyed the steaks and friendly staff. Well, the staff are still friendly, unfortunately the steak we ordered from the tea time menu was so thin you could have spat through it, and it because it was so thin it had no flavour. It was more like a starter course than the previously enjoyable mains, and both of us felt hungry after our meal. The only other good point was the quick service but we left extremely disappointed, and it will be a long time before we venture back

We ate here two evenings while staying in a self catering apartment and absolutely loved our food. I had pasta with green vegetables, my sister had fish and hubby had what he describes as 'proper gammon' and being creatures of habit we repeated our order on our second visit! The staff were lovely and very attentive and the cost of our food was very reasonable.

We ate here twice over the Easter weekend. They are very accommodating & always seem to squeeze you in to the restaurant or bar area. On the Saturday night we ate in the bar & on Easter Monday we ate in the restaurant. The food is reasonably priced & was delicious on both occasions. We had booked our table on Easter Monday so got a lovely window seat but the staff seemed a little over stretched as we were left for ages before we asked if we could order our food/drink & one of our starters only got put on when the rest was served & then again we were told one of the dessert choices was unavailable when the others were being served (unfortunately it was the same family member who had to wait each time). 4/5 but I can forgive the other star due to Easter madness in Portrush.

Went in for breakfast as a non-resident. A pleasant experience with attentive staff. The hot breakfast was buffet-style and hence had sat around for a long time. The fresh melon and pineapple were good. The pot of tea was very well made and stayed hot for many cups. I have had several lunches here before where the food was excellent, but this breakfast was not up to that standard.

There were 5 of us on a busy Saturday: service was very attentive with Elizabeth leading. Food very good but rump steak could have been cooked in a hotter pan although it did come rare as ordered. Regularly visit ramada and it is one of our favourites . Hadn't been for a few months and had given other popular venues in portrush our custom. Booked a table recently for two and while we waited enjoyed a relaxing drink at the bar. Ordered our food. I had chicken on chorizo salad and other half had smoked haddock in mustard crust. Both were superb meals and generous portions. Couldnt manage a dessert sadly! Service professional friendly and efficient. Not rushed or feeling we has to move. Well done ramada. First class dining at a reasonable price. We shall return soon.

This Review relates to the Portstewart location only - can’t find a separate listing for it on TA Experience as follows: Entered - smoky/ poor ventilation - coming from kitchen area Noisy - lots of noise (plates etc) from open kitchen area competing with the music and people trying to talk over both Cold (arrived 9:30 am - would have expected to be warmer by then) Expensive - but then most things on North Coast are Scones - limited variety. Not fresh. Covered in a sugar glaze. Excuses - sorry we have run out of jam. Went back to kitchen area to ask if had any marmalade instead? No. ‘But you are serving scones and toast’? Response - It’s very busy this time of year. My response - that’s why you plan for it. It should have been a single star. But it’s Christmas

My favourite dining venue in the area. Can’t recommend the service & quality of this establishment enough. Great food, good portions & friendly staff. My only criticism is that myself & my friends would prefer to dine in the restaurant for its ambience, etc., than in the bistro, but despite requesting this while booking, we frequently are seated in the bistro. While the menu & meals are the same in quality & price, surely if the restaurant is requested, it should be honoured!

We stayed at the Ibis Riverside Coleraine with our Ladies choir from North Devon on Friday the 27th Oct for three nights. The staff were excellent, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble also they were very accommodating when we sang some songs in the bar. The breakfasts and dinner we had at the hotel were excellent as were Danielle and Erin our waitresses. The barman and the two ladies on the reception were also very helpful. Needless to say if we ever needed to stay in Coleraine we would definitely stay at this hotel and recommend to others

We spent one night at the Port Hotel as we were visiting family in the area and heading to the Giant's Causeway. Location is good, not a far drive from the Causeway with decent restaurants nearby. Staff at the front desk and in the restaurant were friendly. The beds unfortunately were very uncomfortable.. lumpy and badly in need of updating. The hotel vibe is cute and quaint, okay for one night, but wouldn't spend a second night.
