Had a lovely fish and chips here. But wow what a quantity!

Absolutely horrible fish and chips and a sausage supper, very greasy. For the little that we ate of the suppers, we all felt really sick afterwards . Worst suppers, we all had the misfortune of eating.

Superb gluten free cod and chips! I drive for nearly an hour just to go here!

Enjoyed a wonderful pensioners fish tea here today 15/5/25. Portion exceeded more than our expectation. All freshly cooked , with portion of mushy peas and tartare sauce. By the time we were finished we were well and truly full. We were served today by Ellie who was cheerful, helpful and she even brought a bowl of water for the dog. This fish restaurant warrants a visit. Beautiful decor, rustic/ industrial look but very enjoyable. We will come again.

Decided to have take away tonight as back in the area. First time very good hot fish & chips. Generous portions. Enjoyed. However, this time not so good. Service quick & friendly but food not hot. Felt fish & chips not freshly made.

I just popped in for a look and ended up having the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. When it arrived, wow, what a lot you get,really enjoyed it, very tasty and filling

Had a selection of the menu including haddock, chips, and battered sausage with gravy from the takeaway shop (located next to the restaurant itself). Perhaps the best fish and chips I’ve ever had and the service was delightful. Can’t recommend enough for anyone visiting the area.

3 star instead of higher is only due to the price which i found to be too high for the meals we recieved as the restaurant itself is a nice place to dine. My fish and chips where nice very big potion no complaints there. What I found let it down was paying extra for a small pot of mushy peas. I have been to many places that include a pot of tea and bread and butter along with the mushy peas. I understand the cost of running a premises nowadays has shot up but do think £17.45 for fish and chips should come with peas. My wife and child's sausage and chips where good and crispy how they like it. Curry sauce was lovely. But due to the price I won't be returning for a sit in. But may return for takeaway if of more value. GW.

The fish was very greasy, chips were not nice could do with longer cooking, steak pie was disgusting pastry still raw and the filling was supposed to be steak but tasted of nothing, only could taste carrots, don't know why the pie was covered in what I think was poppy seeds, but there was nothing on the price board to say what the seeds were. We had 1steak pie an chips, single fish,single battered sausage, single smoked sausage and a small bottle of coke £31.00 Won't be back, won't recommend and the price was just as disgusting as the food.

The best fish ,chips and peas I've had in a long while.

My first time visiting the area and stopped by here for lunch. The portions are great and the fish plates are cute. I’ve had a lot of fish and chips in my life and this one was decent. They have plenty of seating and the staff were efficient. We will definitely come back again.

Certainly was value for money. Big portion of chips and large fish. The fish was a bit overcooked for my taste but was still nice. Will definitely be back again.

After a long day we decided to pop in and some food. Smelling the fish and chips in the area we decided to go here. Quite and clean and the prices on the menu was a bit high saying it's just fish and chips you could get at your local chipy. I do think for around £16 the peas should be included, especially when other offer that. All in all, the fish was perfectly cooked and chips was amazing. I can see why it could be the best fish and chips. We were shocked with the initial size of the plate but then the fish was quite thin. Maybe overly battered. For 2, £45 is a bit much and probably go elsewhere else to save some cash.

Popped in for takeaway chips, £3.70. Decided to add a fishcake, total £10.80. I questioned this to be told this was right. Erm, £7.10 for a fishcake? Food ok but definitely not worth that money.

Been here a couple of times when visiting Berwick, friendly restaurant and the staff are excellent, value for money and the food is great.

Food was delicious and service was excellent.

Really good food best fish and chips in a while

Batter on the fish is the crispiest I've had and the chips are awesome as well - crunchy and fluffy. It's a bonus you can have an alcoholic drink with your meal. The staff are first class as well - very friendly and helpful. This was our 2nd visit after being there in October and cannot wait to go back

For me the chips wasn't cooked fully and a bit on pricey. Did take both and card

A friend who lives locally told me this chippy was worth a visit. Well they were not wrong. I must say this was the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. Be warned of massive potions and crispy batter, perfectly fried chips and tasty peas. The special was great value and they let us swap out hot drinks for cold drinks at no extra cost. Friendly staff and a lovely setting. I'm glad I listened to my friend.

Excellent food - crisp batter on the fish, chips were proper chip shop chips. We ate twice from this take away and both times very happy with the food. Reasonably priced.

Food is cooked fresh, very large portions and very tasty, highly recommended

Had pensioners portion if fish and chips with mushy peas . Must be the best quality and cheapest chip shop in Berwick . Excellent. Staff were very nice and very helpful. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

I was here today for my lunch and I saw stickers on the windows with recent awards and even though I already bought my lunch. I was just ever so tempted to try out this chipper out of curiosity. Best chipper I have had in a long time and a large portion too! I will be telling people to give this place a visit for sure!

We absolutely loved this restaurant. Service was really friendly, food was amazing and atmosphere was ideal. Playing some really good tunes too. I want to go back already.

Its one of a place where you can close your eye and go there because there wasn’t any fault i can point out during my visit. They’re busy so don’t forget to book a table. Just exceptional fish and chips. We all friends ordered different things from Cod, haddock, sausage and chips and all were just yummy. The portions were so generous even hardly i finished my one. Though very nice and cosy atmosphere inside. Very friendly and helpful staff. Plenty of seatings but most of time they are full as i heard from my friends. Prices were not bad for that big portions. The toilets were really clean. Surely recommend and i must come back again when around.

Pensioners special of fish and chips, bread and butter, mushy peas, and a hot drink for £12.95 was exceptional value for money and tasted heavenly. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed a fish and chips. Restaurant was lovely and clean, toilets well looked after. Service was very good too. Thank you Coull's.

Got takeaway fish and chips last night and have to say they were the best I've had in a very long time. Normally use another fish & chip shop in the town, but won't be going there again. Huge flaky fish, beautifully cooked in crunchy batter and the chips were delicious. I ordered beforehand on the phone for my daughter to collect after work and the girl I spoke to was friendly, polite and pleasant. Thanks for a lovely tea Coulls, we really enjoyed it.

No idea why this place is getting good reviews. I love leaving 5 star reviews for places but this fish and chip shop was in my 5 worst I've ever had. Maybe they just had a bad day? The wait to be served was very long. We awkwardly sat staring up at the counter for ages. The batter was quite bizarre for a fish and chip shop. It was incredibly crumbly and just fell apart so you couldn't really keep it attached to and eat it with the fish. It tasted very strange and was wet and kind of eggy in middle. Most batters I've had are white in the middle, not yellow. The cod was embarrassingly thin (see picture). Absolutely tiny and basically hidden amongst the batter. It was also tough and flavourless. The cold chips tasted like plastic. The watered down vinegar didn't have a taste to it. The 'Cod' and chips were £17. Highly over priced for a disappointing meal. The interior is really nice, the waitress was nice enough but gets you to do all the passing of the plates when handing out and collecting them. We definitely would not recommend this place at all and I'd love to know under what circumstances it won awards!!

We dropped in here today for a bite to eat. Nice atmosphere, seemed clean and the staff were really nice. Unfortunately, the food wasn't great. I ordered the steak pie and chips with gravy. The pie was very salty, the chips were under cooked and the gravy was just lumps. My husband ordered fish and chips, although a large portion, the fish was very thin. One of my friends is a vegetarian, we asked if the chips were cooked in vegetarian oil. The lady stated that they were cooked in beef dripping, fair enough, but the veggie burger was also cooked in beef dripping. Which makes the veggie burger non vegetarian. We will not be returning and this is not the best chippy in the North East.

Huge portions at a really good price

Enjoyed the pensioners lunch today which is really good value. Fish and chips were piping hot with lovely light and crispy batter on fish and homemade chips served by cheerful waitress. My husband is a big eater but was beaten by large portion. Still full eight hours later so no cooking just a cuppa.

Lovely food, thought it was expensive until my meal came. Then I was thinking, value for money.

Fish was just a large fish finger. All batter and no fish. Poured the spare oil in my engine. Would not recommend. 😲

This was the second time we had used this restaurant, and we went on purpose because we enjoyed the meal the first time when we were in this area, and it did not disappoint. The fish is skinned before fried in battery, mushy peas, tea, and a slice of bread and butter served with it. We had the pensioners deal. If ever we are in this area, we shall be coming again. Very friendly service and clean utilises. Thank you.

I had haddock and chips, my partner had the mini version. Both were huge. At £16.95 I'd have thought they could have chucked a spoonfull of mushy peas in free but no a small ramekin is a £1.95 extra. Still the fish looked like a whale. However when I opened it up it was 50% batter. A really thin fillet of fish with a thick layer of batter. I'd have preferred free mushy peas, and half the batter, ideally a thicker fillet of fish. Oh and our £2.95 iron bru had not been in the fridge and apparantly the ice machine was not working, warm iron bru lovely. Give it 5 years and I can come back for the pensioners deal that looks great and includes free mushy peas, bread and butter and tea.

I was here about a month ago with my girlfriend having a 3 night stay in Berwick..I found this place while trawling google maps looking for somewhere to eat.. glad I found it as the food was lovely.. massive fish too.. would highly recommend..

Having read the reviews of this place, we were looking forward to trying it out. The good - Decor. Fun, smart. The bad - Service. Certainly not done with a smile. The young lady seemed physically incapable of smiling or being friendly. I felt like we were an inconvenience. Food. Fish. Thinnest piece of cod going. Batter was thick, greasy & tasteless. Chips. Utterly tasteless & dry. How on Earth did they manage that?? Cost. Very inflated. £16.95 for fish and chips?? Huge disappointment. Absolutely not recommended.

Stopped off on way back to Edinburgh. Although full were able to get a table without waiting to long. Fish and Chips with salad was great 👍

Told gluten-free was available when we arrived (and asked). We ordered gluten-free without any issues, however after we received our drinks and started drinking they came back and we were informed gluten-free was unavailable. Ended up with a baked potato and the rest of the table having normal fish and chips

Great Staff, Varied Menu and Space (Not Saturn) The restaurant is spacious and airy unlike many Fish restaurants and if your not fishy there a plenty of alternatives choices.

First time being here since refurbishment and I was very disappointed. Fish supper, the chips were lovely. Homemade and tasty. The fish however was very greasy, and the skin was still on the fish under the very thick batter. Staff didn't utter a word to myself or the other customer apart from to take orders. Not even a smile. Used to thoroughly enjoy getting my tea from here when I visited Berwick on Tweed but I'll not be back now.

Nice enough chippy but the batter on the sausage was very crispy and completely came off when cutting into it so was more like eating sausage with bits of batter. Tasted fine, but probably wouldn't be my first choice of chippy in Berwick.

Nothing really stands out to substantiate this as “The best fish and chips in the Northeast” if I’m perfectly honest, Food was pretty average, and on the expensive side. Supper, single fish and small juice £ 19.00 Chips were low in quantity and poor in quality perhaps the last in the fryer?.. However it is still the better of the two on this street, I would use it again but for that reason.

Really disappointed with our most recent takeaway experience having enjoyed the fish and chips here on several previous occasions when visiting Berwick. We're hoping it was because they were very busy this time- the fish was tasty, although overcooked and a bit chewy round the edges but the chips were awful, undercooked, pale and greasy, most went in the bin. Definitely didn't live up to their claims this time round and not sure we'll go back.

We went there for our tea and had the pensioner plate. It were bloody huge. And we took our 4 legged friend with us too. They were great.

Visited the takeaway on Wednesday for a quick tea, shop was busy but service was pretty quick, ordered jumbo sausage n chips and a fish n chips, both were absolutely gorgeous, fresh, piping hot and not greasy at all. It was so good that we went back again on the Thursday. Defo recommend if you are visiting berwick :)

Best in northeast . I don't think so. I was not impressed with the the fish (size or flavour). There is no children's menu/portions. Also price on higher side so expected better. Not be returning especially when there's other options.

Excellent gluten free fish and chips. Went on the website and saw that they offered gluten free fish and chips. Walked in and asked about the gluten free, I was assured that it was definitely gluten free and that separate friers, utensils and areas were used for the gluten free food. The fish and chips were very very good, with a generous portion of fish and chips at a good price. Excellent service very friendly and helpful staff who are clued up on gluten free. The shop and restaurant were very busy including another customer ordering gluten free. Highly recommended.

Staff had attitude and the haggis super was awful but the seagulls seem to enjoy it. Won't be getting anymore of my money. Even after returning the food they should have insisted on refunding my money but wasn't bothered.

Came in tonight and ordered two haggis suppers which were cold,dry and the batter was hard also chips undercooked - returned meals to chip shop and was looked and questioned "cold"?" We have been using this shop for years and will not be returning. Lady serving had an attitude.

Used this chippie before but disappointed tonight Chips weren't nice and had batter bits through it as I hate batter could only have those with coated in batter As on hoilday was looking forward to our food

Very nice, cosy restaurant. Food was out superfast, massive portions , hot and tasty. The chips are to die for. Service was okay, didn't go over and beyond, but couldn't fault it.

Getting old has some advantages 😁 ie the Pensioners Fish Tea for the very affordable price of £12.95 👍A perfect portion of Haddock chips and mushy peas with a thick slice of bread and butter ...I got a good two cups of delicious tea out of a pot and they didn't skimp on the tartare sauce 😋 Nice acoustic covers of Rock ballads playing and friendly, efficient staff too 💕,best meal out in a long time 👏 If you are ever in Berwick on Tweed I highly recommend this lovely dog friendly Fish and chip restaurant 😋💖💕Bev xxx

We had the very tasty pensioners fish supper last night and the battered sausage & chips. Great service and lovely restaurant and we popped our springer spaniel under the table to relax. Altogether good value, great experience, friendly staff! Would definitely recommend!!

We visited the takeaway as it advertises gluten free as I am Coeliac. We were stood waiting and a young lady asked if what we wanted and before I could answer she went to do something else. When we was finally served I asked if they were doing gluten free and the reply was "no", I asked if the chips were fried separately to everything else which the reply was "no l, the chips are fried in the same frier as the fish and sausage". How can you advertise gluten free when you are cross contaminating the food?

I have had a lot of different chippies all over the UK and some have been amazing but this one was on another level. The fish was outstanding. The chips were cooked perfectly. The curry source I don't even know where to start with that but it was amazing. I had a Scotts pie with it too and it was the best one I have ever had. Overall it was unreal, I will definitely be going back tomorrow or over the weekend. Thank you very much to the staff there too

It was OK, chips were OK, service was OK, my Fish just did not taste fresh, I eat a lot of Fish and Chips, this was definitely average at best.

We went in here for a late lunch as the place was dog friendly, I must say that the food was fantastic, I had the burger, a real burger not a cheap fatty thin served in a real bun and lovely home made chips, my wife had fishcake and was ore than satisfied with the 2 that came. Then there was the fish sandwich that my daughter (25) had, it was a lovely piece of fish 3 times the size of the bun, she couldn't manage to eat all of her meal. I would recommend this place to anyone.

After being asked to wait to be seated it took 10 minutes to get our food ordered , we ordered chips and chip butty and when they come the chips were dry and bun was toasted , could've been an option to have toasted or not in which I wouldn't have wanted , charged £2.80 for a standard 500ml irn brew which you can get anywhere for less than £1.50 , for a chip butty chips and 2 over priced irn brews it came to nearly £15! Wouldn't have minded if the food. Service was good

Had take-away fish and chips, some of the best I’ve had. They also had gluten free options for a family member of mine and I couldn’t taste the difference. Loved it, can’t wait for the next round.

Chips on their own £3.50, chips with cheese £5.60 🤷, staff were nice and friendly chips ok but an extra £2.10 for some cheese on chips is extortionate

We visited the restaurant for lunch as we were on a day trip in the North East, the restaurant wasn’t that busy. We sat outdoors I. The back yard enjoying the lovely summer weather. We made the order of soup of the day (which came very fast) and fish and chips which took some time to arrive and few drinks. The portion is quite big with 2 large pieces of fish and plenty of chips. The fish itself was quite oily, I know it’s deep fried but there was a bit extra oil. And the external layer around the fish was extra think and not that delicious!! The meat of the fish was quite nice, while the chips were not. The soup of the day was parsnips and chilli which was nice and tasty. The claim of the restaurant being the best fish and chips in the North East is quite a stretch, we definitely had better over the years in several other restaurants.
