This place is very popular and the staff are always pleasant and I do like the style of service here as there's always plenty of banter with your server. It's had a refit since my last visit so we went on an October Sunday and had 2 starters 2 roast beef and a cheese board,( which wasn't on the menu and our waiter had a word) a couple of sherries and a bottle of white wine...£140........ The food was fine but nothing special on this occasion however I have had amazing lamb here before. There are also lots of quirky top quality condiments on the table which are a talking point during your meal.

This is a friendly and buzzing pub in Soho. The only downside was a couple of bar tenders being unfriendly and commenting about some clients and it wasn't done discretely. A shame as other staff members and manager were very nice.

At a time when so many traditional British pubs are closing it's great to see that Comptons is flourishing. The management and bar staff are welcoming, very friendly and efficient and unlike some gay (and straight) bars there's no attitude. The pub attracts a wide range of customers and it's great that you can go in during the afternoon and the place won't be empty. I drink wine and there's a good selection at reasonable prices. Keep up the good work!

Visited as a couple. Aware mainly male customers but other women in the bar. Did not feel uncomfortable but the bar staff seemed efficiently indifferent. Very busy so obviously popular, but maybe that is due to the location? Gin and tonic served with pumped tonic, so not my favourite.Overall impression: not very friendly!

It's such a shame that Comptons has such rude bar staff because it has the potential to be a really great bar. I've repeatedly been asked to leave and when I ask what the reason is I'm told they don't have to tell me. There's one member of staff in particular who doesn't like me, I really don't know why that should be but whenever he's working I eventually get asked to leave - usually by another member of staff, because he doesn't have the courage to speak to me himself. There's also a very cliquey group of people who sit in the same corner every day - gossiping about everyone and making myself and my friends quite uncomfortable. One of these people is very friendly with the staff member who doesn't like me, and the other afternoon once again I was told I couldn't come back in after having a cigarette. I was given no reason but I'm not stupid. In a bar like this everyone should be welcome and no one customer should have the right to choose who drinks there. As for the staff, the reason they refuse to give a reason is because there is no reason other than the fact that staff member X doesn't like me and customer X feels the same. This has to be the most unfriendly place I've ever vistited but thankfully there are lots of other places to go where at least you know you're not going to be asked to leave because a member of staff has an attitude problem or a customer thinks he owns the venue. I know they don't care, this place is busy and most of the other customers seem happy enough but it's shocking that this is happening on a regular basis. Shame on you Comptons. We won't be coming back.

I visit this pub every 2 weeks or so to catch up with friends, it’s a local bar to where I work. I love the atmosphere and always have a good time there, more importantly I understand its importance at a time where social cleansing with the Gay communities in London seems to be on the increase – it’s important these places remain a sense of solidarity and therefore the people ‘on the ground’ working can help give and sustain this to be a great place but there are some absolutely rude bar staff… Over the years there’s one or two – the rest are really lovely. I would be keen to see their staff strategy (if any) and would hope there’s a sub-section “Manners” and how to use them for those that desperately need it.I’m always pleasant to them and not letting these experiences skew my feelings about Comptons but the attitude and rudeness gets so tiresome. We’re all human, not machines. Calm down fellas!

I really like Comptons pub, I do go there for years and I think this pub deserve a round of applause for staying original and unspoiled. The pub is a peace of jewellery of the Old Compton street, and a living history! My favourite day there was one day all of electricity went off all of a sudden in soho area including Comptons, there was no music no lights absolutely nothing! The whole of street was blacked out like during second world war! But that did not stop anyone leaving the pub. We carried on drinking and started talking with one another even with strangers! Staff was amazing, they placed candles everywhere and did everything to entertain people. We were all joking giggling and laughing it was so cosy and romantic too! Ferhat is one of my favourite barman there (One with the German accent) He worked really hard with the others to keep us entertained, I couldn't help myself with making "Hide Ferhat Germans are coming" jokes with him. He mades us laugh so much all night I will never forget. I hope Comptons never changes and stays as a friendly place like this. It is so sad seeing pubs similar to this loosing business and closing down every year in London.

I like Comptons and i have been coming here for the last 12 years or so , i have to say that a lot of the staff and their attitude leaves a lot to be desired , i was in there with mates a few weeks back with my money poised to order , a barman looked at me and walked past to serve someone else when i had been there first , then when i did get served they have the cheek to leave your change on a tray in expectation of a tip ...heres one , .. be nice to your customers , you might get one then ! I was here last night and the pub seems to leave candles out , not a good idea amongst inebriated men ; there was one guy who was drunk or drugged or both and kept playing with the candle and moving it back and forth on the table , narrowly missing my/and my mates arms if i want to be dripped in wax , i will head to Vauxhall , he seemed to know the staff and management so maybe that was okay ? Its a shame because i fall into the "Comptons" type and the Welly is being more bear orientated , it doesnt seem fair if your face fits that you get different treatment

Popped in mid afternoon whilst visiting soho for a pint. Looked like a great venue and I was looking for places to frequent in the evening with my friends, sadly the only thing I remember was the bad welcome, I said hi please and thank you, basically being polite, however the guy who served me did not show such manners and couldn't have been less interested in welcoming a new customer. Needless to say I and my friends gave this place a wide birth in the evening. It's a shame people working in a customer facing role still seem to struggle with common customer service.

Visited here before Christmas 2014 on a weekend trip to London. My partner and I (we are girl & boy) stumbled into this public house in Soho with aching feet and just wanting a couple of drinks. We were instantly puzzled as we were gazed upon with some equal surprise by the men sat mainly alone at various tables dotted around this pub. At first I thought we had walked into a strip joint and asked my partner if she would like to move on. She told me not to be silly but five minutes later the penny dropped and we both realised we were in a male dominated gay pub.Once we had established this we were happy to start some dialogue with the bar staff. It was an ice breaker and we were advised by another patron that the pub had only recently opened itself up to the general public. Understandably they are a bit wary of straight men and couples who may not be aware of the pubs primary client base.My comments- The bar is ideally for gay men but those of an accepting nature are very well recieved irrelevant of your tendency. If you are not accepting of gay men my advice would be to stay away. If you are ok in their company make them aware that you are straight and you will not be bothered and all staff and other customers were very welcoming. The pub is very nice and clean. It's a very traditional type of pub and we visited on a Friday afternoon. As the day turned to night it became very busy indeed.Thank you comptons for a wonderful afternoon. We both had a good laugh.

I know I might sound a bit extreme with this review. But after living in Rio de Janeiro my entire life and visiting gay bars around the many of the financial centres in the world, I was absolutely delighted to have found The Comptons of Soho. At first I was told the bar was too "masculine" which made me a bit curious about it but a tad apprehensive at the same time. I wondered whether it would be something too heavy or "leather"/"motorcycle"-related. To my surprise, the pub was full of mature, masculine and good looking gay men. Everybody was welcomed, ranging from bald tattooed men to some guys who tended towards the flamboyant side. The staff was really attentive and pleasant, the price was just a it right. And the environment... Wow. I've never been to a gay pub as masculine and interesting as this one. There is wood all around, the second floor even has an old wooden piano set along with some old/antique furnitures. Every time a found a bar that would be as masculine as this one, it turned out to be a straight venue. For the kind of people that frequent the place and the masculine decoration and pic-ish vibe, this has easily become one of my favorite places in the world. Can't wait till I am able to come back to London and visit Comptons of Soho again.

I popped into Comptons after a meal out with a friend somewhere around 9.30-10pm on Monday evening. Yet again I noticed that the lights were on too bright and for me this ruins the atmosphere (it never used to be so brightly lit). However, what concerned me more was the fact that the two door staff on duty were standing on either side of the main doors into the pub with both doors fully open. It was freezing inside! Most people were wearing jackets as it was just too cold. I didn't finish my pint and swiftly left (I shouldn't have to ask the staff to close the door as on a rainy night at the beginning of May at 10pm the main doors shouldn't be left constantly wide open). Nowadays it's all about the convenience of staff at the expense of the customer.

Stephan's warm, engaging and supportive personality really enable him to get the very best out of the staff that he line manages, thus, enabling them to deliver a first rate customer service. I have been equally impressed with his ability to resolve problems that occasionally arise with customers in a professional manner but above all his exceptional ability to remain consistently calm when working under pressure. I've been a fairly regular attendee at Comptons since 1989. In that time I've seen it change quite a lot. However, even with all the change the essentials have remained; drinks aren't a bad price, the crowd is normally friendly and the staff know what they're doing. One of life's little pleasures is to sit next to the window in the mid afternoon and watch Old Compton Street roll on by. It isn't a young pub necessarily - so what! If you want yoof then go elsewhere - this is Soho after all and not short of alternatives - and the punters are very much more on the blokey end of the gay male scale (thankfully!) that said I've met straight friends - including women - in here and there's never been an issue. Now I'm getting a bit long in the tooth I tend to avoid the more obviously busy times - Friday and Saturday evening the place is rammed to the rafters and the music is loud - I prefer to go when it's either quiet or just picking up. The point is the pub has a different feel to it depending on the day and time - find your own favourite combination.

Been drinking in Comptons since the time it changed from the Swiss Hotel days....I was very young in those days! It has had its ups and downs over the years, more downs in the last few years for me (M&B Days) but now seems to be on the up again. A great selection of beers, unheard of for most bars primarily serving the gay community and good attitude free service. Not too sure about the new owners converting the upper parts into flats but that's a business, means it has changed to a standalone bar rather than a pub with the landlord living on and running the site with the atmosphere that gives. A very pleasant experience overall.

Very attentive and friendly staff. Been going here on and off for years and it has got lots better. Only moan is that hand dryer can be heard loudly in the bar.

I was made to feel so welcome as I am new in the city and I feel like they took me under their wing. the manager and his bar boys always recognize me and make me feel very special. Why is the rest of London so unfriendly and not like this place!?

Orders a wine, most of it was spilt after asking for some ice to be added. Then told it was mysteriously NOT in the happy hour deal (unsurprisingly). Charged over five pounds for the privilege. Glass clearer then removed a quarter full glass before I had finished. On querying this, he said "what's your problem!" Why do gay places treat their customers like this???? AVOID ... There are much better, hotter places that don't treat their customers like scum.

Staff are usually very professional, although the last time I went one particular bar man insisted on serving the younger clientele before the more older ones. It did leave a bit of a sour taste in the mouth.Love the mix of guys that go, they tend to be less sniffier than the more trendier bars on the Old Compton strip. A nice touch is how the lights are dimmed as the evening progresses. The bouncers on the door are very efficient and friendly and I like how they open the door for you as you enter. The music can be overpowering and makes it difficult to have a conversation. One unfortunate negative is the range of tap lagers, just because it's foreign, does not make it good. A few are seriously foul, I seriously think the manager should go back to the more well known brands such as Carling and Fosters etc. All in all though, this is a great pub and well worth a visit.

This is a nice bar ONLY for a certain crowd. The staff are nice, the music is alright. But this is a bar for +40 or you may feel a little uncomfortable there. Also NOT girl friendly. They probably want to be but the clientele isn't really for them!

Had a nice Monday night in this gay bar right in the centre of gay SoHo. Mixed clientele, mostly a bit more mature, cheap drinks (2.50 GBP per drink on Monday night).

I was at Bar Soho at teh begining of December for a last minute night out. I just want to say the cocktails were amazing and they play music to cater for all. There is a small bar upsatirs that was playing house music and teh main room was play comercial chart tunes. The girls and I have a great night (happy hour is 50% off) drinking wine and cutting some shapes on the dancefloor. Watch out Bar Soho as we will be back in 2010.

Recently came here for a visit during our trip to London for a few beers. Had to visit as my brother had worked here many years ago. Beer was great. Staff was friendly.
