Coffee Hog Prettygate in Colchester

Didn't impressed me, I came expecting better service because of the reviews. Most of the seats were not allowed to use, they didn't give me any utensils to eat a not so small croissant. Only hot drinks before 30 min before closure and they were cleaning the space while we were consuming food.

Delicious selection of food. Not expensive. Lovely atmosphere.

We were a very last minute corporate catering booking for 50 people, and the experience couldn’t have been easier. They were very patient as we deliberated over menu choices and provided prompt responses on email to any queries. The food was delivered at exactly the requested time, neatly plattered up (and with flavours and ingredients/allergens clearly labelled). Food was delicious and we will definitely be using Coffee Hog again!

Just all around ace love this place, today had to get mine to go but nothing is a trouble, with meal deals over £5 now I do not begrudge £8 for their sandwiches so fresh, always a lovely salad and crisps even when you take away. Lovely quality, and great coffee too!

We didn’t have a reservation but were seated at 11:35 for a table that was reserved for 12:30, no problem for us. The vanilla milkshake also did not taste of vanilla so when we asked if they could add some vanilla syrup to rectify it, the server said we’d have to pay. To be told to pay to make a vanilla milkshake actually taste like vanilla feels a bit unjustified. At 12:10 the same server came and told us we had to leave within five minutes because of the next reservation, which was in plenty of time—we felt rushed for no reason as if they did not want us there and it felt microaggressive as a Chinese family of four despite spending £60 for the brunch. Overall bad experience because of the server which is a shame as I’ve enjoyed their coffees when I went alone in the past few years but I won’t be going back again.

Visited for lunch with a friend late morning pink a Thursday. If you are looking for a community meeting place as a parent with young children to socialise with other parents it's a good place to go. Was very noisy, tables very crowded, small children running around apparently unsupervised, at risk of accidents. Not a good place for a conversation at that time. Nothing wrong with the place itself, except that most tables were communal with many seats. Do not recommend for a quiet chat over lunch. Food was okay, coffee was good. Service was poor but probably due to being busy.

Great coffee shop. Very good menu. A little pricey but food good.

What a lovely cafe, recommended a lovely toasted sandwich. Will definitely visit again.

Very relaxing with kids corner what else can you want?

Arrived without a reservation was ignored for a couple of minutes ( standing is difficult for me as a disabled person ) interrupted the ladies behind counter conversation to ask if we could sit anywhere as we hadn’t booked to be told in an abrupt manner to calm down ? With a hand 🤚 up … I explained I had difficulty standing .. I did not come across as aggressive so I don’t understand the defensive reply. Was it because I had interrupted the gossip of the day ???? Whilst I appreciate we had not booked there was absolutely no need for the ladies actions or tone of voice . I could see the cafe was busy but as a customer I expect the basic customer service with a smile … will not return . 2 customers you have lost due to poor customer service . The staff do not wear name badges so I can not name her but it was a Thursday morning …. 13th June

Hot chocolate and milk shakes fantastic unfortunately bacon was very over cooked and eggs were not that good didn’t know you allowed dogs to run around free had to ask owners to put them on there leads as daughter can’t be round dogs and they started running around the place this is not good staff should sort this and have a separate area for dogs as also little children there food area and dogs don’t mix or should be seated outside this was the Prettygate coffee hog

I've been to harrods in London this is way much tastier ... chief deserves a rise I will be back for more ,im a social media creator and I have shared .. no fault at all there all amazing 🙌

Wow. Not sure how I've never come here but certainly won't be my last time. Amazing selection of cakes and coffee but the brunch menu is to die for. Massive portions and do not miss out on the hog spice tatties! It's a dog friendly cafe with also a play area for the kids. Portions are also absolutely huge! They also provided bowls for the dogs with a cold sausage each. Highly recommended!

We personaly dident like it ,tables to close together seats uncomfortable ,only had coffee that was very nice but would have prefered it hotter ......staff friendly n polite ,space for 3 cars to park

Always delicious food, and great service

Too dramatic and tantrums. Morning 9am the whole area is empty and still they prefer you book the table first. No smile on till person’s face. Do you really need so much drama for a simple coffee shop

Wonderful brunch this morning for three. Superb eggs Royale, delicious granola and the pancakes didn't last long.

We went for lunch, booked in advance as it gets busy. Food was lovely, generous portions and very tasty. We both had mac n cheese off the birthday specials menu followed by rice crispy cake.

Nice dog friendly cafe. Enjoyed a bacon bap and latte. With dog treats for puppy.

Fantastic place, what a find. Food is excellent. Kids play area is a great idea. Lunch boxes are good idea. You can do cookie decorating here, great for those creative little people. Highly recommend going here.

This is a lovely place to eat and chat, a couple of people bought their dogs as well, we weren't hurried which was very nice, food was good too, nice relaxed atmosphere .

A bustling cafe at peak times, so it is advised to book ahead if you want to head in for some breakfast/brunch/lunch. The coffee is ok, the main menu has a good selection of tasty meals, and the cakes are fantastic. The standout item on the menu is their signature Tatties! I would come here just to eat these slightly too salty but delicious turbo charged roast potato/wedges. There is also a little kids play area to assist in entertainment during the meal. A really nice place.

This is an amazing place to meet people, especially if you have small children. Fantastic food and coffee everytime we go. Staff are brilliant and play area for young child is brilliant too.

Just had a lovely breakfast for three of us. The flat white wasn't to my liking but was dealt with efficiently and with a smile.

Good food, good service,nice clean well presented restaurant can be busy at times, best to book a table. I have been several times and it is always a very nice breakfast.

My colleagues and I at nearby shop come in to The Hog several times a week for takeaway coffee and the occasional cake and my wife and I occasionally have brunch too. The staff are always friendly and the service, drink and food is always top notch. Thank you for being the 'fix' we need.

Very pleasantly surprised with how spacious it was. Also a lovely corner for children to play in, very handy. Servers very pleasant and helpful. I would have preferred more choice of snacks but the food choice was very good.

Fantastic place for mums to meet - fantastic menu, lovely staff and little play area for children with good eyesight from the tables. Kids menu is also great! We love coming here!

Great breakfast! Initially sceptical due to the price and previous experience at their other site. However pleasantly surprised as the breakfast were fantastic. Worth every penny, sufficient portion sizes and quality food! Well worth a visit. They even squeezed us in as a walk in and the place was clean with good decor.

Lovely café - food is freshly prepared, always tasty and lots of variety. Good veggy options. Friendly staff and the location is great as no need to go in to town!! I wouldn't normally comment on the washrooms but they were absolutely spotless - always a good sign

If Jesus went to this Café, he would literally say 'Oh my dad! That was amazing'. I couldn't fault the food or service, exceptional. If I wasn't so poor I'd probably throw some shares into the company to keep it running forever. Bare nice grub, Nutella hot chocolate made me hard as a woodpeckers lips, it was that nice!

.Went today...1/12/22. Nice varied menu . Best brie and bacon panini I have tasted. Prices seem ok for the quality of food. Popular venue for mums with babies and very young children as there is a small play area. Has many regular followers and an undoubted success.

First time coming to this establishment. What a lovely place! Such a nice, calm, clean and welcoming atmosphere. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Yes, the food is a little pricey, however... the food is cooked with a lot of care and attention! I would even say lovingly. I had a full English for £13 and it was really quite delicious, and i would have no qualms paying that again. The thought, even with the temperature of the food, was really impressive. Such as the baked beans on toast for my four year old, it was actually ready to eat and not like lava. The child play area is also fabulous and well thought out. My sister in law was impressed and shocked at the toilet facilities, which are honestly like a posh hotel/boutique! All in all, this is probably our new favourite place to eat/chill with the children! Amazing.

What an amazing place. Packed with people of all ages. Complete with a crèche area for the littluns, an area to work/study and lots of great food/coffee! Plenty of Veggie options available too :)

I found our recent visit to Coffee Hog underwhelming at best. Only one vegan cake option and the member of staff on the till took a phone call instead of assisting customers who were there in person. I also thought the staff generally to be quite unwelcoming and borderline rude at times. It’s a shame as we live so close by and I really want to support small businesses given the current economic climate, but I don’t think we’ll be returning any time soon.

We do breakfast in places every other weekend and i can honestly say this has been THE BEST!!! I had the avocado on toast and hubby had full english, he agrees on it being the best!!!

Lovely place for breakfast or lunch. Excellent quality food and service. Would have given 5 stars but £13.00 for a Full English Breakfast is too expensive.

This cafe is just gorgeous to sit and have catch up with your friends. I’ve been to both beaches and they are really lovely. I ordered an open sandwich and opted for the herby tatties and wow it was all so delicious. Really great price for the quality of food served. The workers were very friendly and efficient. I’ll be making many returns for more coffee and lunch catch ups!

Nicer play area for children than William Harris Way. I like that it has little "fence" so it is easier to control where your child is going. Tasty food and lovely staff. As the other location, bit pricey (full english cost around £13) and coffee could be bit warmer but all in all happy with the place.

Breakfast was perfectly cooked and presented, coffee was lovely, place was airy, tidy, clean and has an area for kids to play in, highly recommended.

Been coming to coffee hog for a long time now and every experience here is always a good one. Amazing quality food, decor is beautiful and welcoming and the staff are so bloody brilliant! Honestly you will not find a better place to eat and socialise, if you haven't already (don't know why you wouldn't have 😳)then check it out!

I have just visited this tranquil venue for a business meeting this morning. I don't often find myself selling accountancy services to clients in such a relaxed and airy coffee shop environment. Friendly staff, spacious floor plan and a variety of food and drink available. Thank you for a great opportunity to do business. Highly recommended.

Absolutely fantastic breakfast- we all had something different and all the meals were superb. Lovely interior. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

I can't say enough about how great it is to have a community cafe in this part of Colchester. The cafe itself is fairly large, with a small children's play area which makes it attractive for parents with young kids. The menu is varied, although the vegetarian/vegan indicators on the menu behind the counter were really hard to see. I didn't see a paper version so can't comment on whether it's any better up close. There weren't any vegan cakes as far as I could tell, which is a shame. The soya latte had a strong nutty flavour to it - not unpleasant, but not what I expected either. At £2.50 it wasn't unreasonable but the odd taste means I won't rush back. When I visited mid-morning, the place was busy and it felt like the staff were rushing to fulfil orders - and I must admit to feeling a little ignored while I stood at the counter. However, if you're not in a hurry and/or you're staying in for food/drink then it's a pleasant enough place to while away an hour.

The service & breakfast was very good. It was busy when we visited, staff were friendly & efficient. The cafe itself was incredibly noisy with other diners chatting & children playing. I'm not sure what can be done about the acoustics in there but the noise seemed to be amplified.

I was impressed by the politeness of the staff this morning. So nice to be greeted with a smile. It really seemed that it was a pleasure to serve me.

I visited Coffeehog for the first time, earlier this week. The kids play area was perfect for our 2 year old who loved it, the coffee shop looks great and the service was excellent from start to finish. We had some brunch which we loved and it was fairly priced. Will definitely be going back regularly!

Nice little spot in the centre of Prettygate, which seems to be more than just a coffee shop but a thriving hub of the community. Nice coffee plus a place where mums and toddlers can meet up for what appears to be organised events.

Great local coffee / café place with very tasty food at a reasonable price. Perfect for brunch and will be visiting regularly

Amazing little place that's recently opened up.

Really glad when these guys opened a venue in our area. Nice space, great selection of savoury food (open sandwiches, panini's, classic breakfast/brunch options) and drinks. Only downside of my experience is that front of house appears a bit undermanned leading to a bit of a wait for punters and a bit of rushing about for the staff. That lead to both my food and drink not being correct. That wouldn't stop me from going again or making it a regular haunt.

I have been to the coffee hog a few times now for the full English breakfast and each time it has been perfect. The tomato’s on the vine are a lovely touch much better then the normal tinned ones you get at other places . I look forward to going again. Thank you

First impressions just what Prettygate has needed for years. It was busy when we called in for coffee and cake but we were quickly served and managed to get the last table. Looking round it was full of people of all ages. Great thought has gone into making a secure children's play area as well. Food and coffee were excellent and well priced. We will definitely be back.
