Cod & Waffle in Central Bedfordshire

After living in the area for more than 3 years, we finally gave the cod and waffle a visit. It’s nice, spacious and bright inside with windows the whole length of the building. Service was great. We were seated straight away and able to order drinks. Their coffee was very nice. Moving to mains, their food lives up to the hype. They serve authentic tasting fish and chips in here which I didn’t expect. The cod looks freshly battered and tastes the part too. Gorgeous with their homemade tartare sauce. The chips are so morish as well. Same ones you’d get from a chippy. My stack burger however was the star of the show. Had it with some thick cut smoked bacon, burger sauce, pickles and cheese. Very messy but so succulent and flavourful. I was amazed that we have this food on our doorstep. They also have a selection of imported soft drinks and candies from the US/china which is an interesting touch!

Lots of nice food. You can get a fish dish or a waffle dish, both of which are delightful. Oddly, there is no option to have fish and a waffle, which is definitely a missed opportunity. The sundaes are also very good

I can honestly say that I am severely disappointed with the food that is now being served here. New management has definitely changed things and it’s not for the better. Being Coeliac, I use to visit at least once a week as they served a wide range of gluten free food, but the last 2 meals I have had here are well under the standard that I have experienced in the past. The chips are now dry and over cooked, the battered sausages are hard and the portion sizes have shrunk! I ordered a portion of homemade tartar sauce, which use to come in a polystyrene cup, now comes in an extremely small tub which holds roughly a heaped teaspoon of sauce. For £1.60…it’s a disgrace! I will not be returning, they have lost a valued customer

Although it remains a firm favourite, some things are not quite as good as they were. The one poor server was too busy to do everything promptly. Our four main meals did not come out together and mine was not hot.

I ordered gluten free haddock and chips and gluten free chocolate and banana waffle. Fish and chips - fish in GF batter was good but the chips were terrible, like yesterday's chips warmed up. Waffle had no flavour and texture of damp cardboard, supplied with a small pot of what appeared to be spray cream/

Not sure what has happened since new ownership. Used to be a local gem. Menu is much the same but small changes have let it down. Most food is greasy, cheap condiments available, recently a random selection of soft drinks being sold in the middle of the restaurant? Lost it’s charm.

Owned by a coeliac so pretty much anything on the menu can be gluten free...its a treasure

Order no. MSXV. I ordered 3 large cod and chips this evening, and they were very disappointing. They are usually good and meaty but not this time. They were greasy and mostly batter and not even good batter. The cod had a little meat on them. The grease made me sick all evening.

We arrived on Saturday morning @ 10:30. There was only one server but it was getting busy, 2nd server didn’t start until 11, so there was a little wait. It was well worth it! Both servers were lovely, food was really nicely presented and tasted good! I had the Brunch, poached eggs cooked perfectly. I let the server know I had dairy and wheat intolerance. I never had to say it again. Food came out hot and in good time once order was taken. It’s been 16 years since I’ve had a waffle! I was cheeky and finished mine with some maple syrup. Just so yummy and no stomach ache afterwards. Success!

Very average food (At best), nothing to get excited about.Travelled from another town because of the rating but it’s definitely not a 4.5/5 as advertised.

The best Fish & Chips we have ever had. The batter was lovely and crisp and the chips were brilliant.

Lovely home cooked food, it was very clean and peaceful. Willing to xater to all dietary requests, which is refreshing

I went in on a Saturday evening at 4:30 ordered cod & chips and waited 25 minutes totally unacceptable. The restaurant was busy, “just eat” drivers were told there orders were not ready, and only 1 person waiting tables until another person came out to help from the kitchen. As much as I like there food I won’t be going back

Large cod was very thick and after cutting in the cod was rolled into middle chips were very oily and no grease-proof paper box. Curry sauce was very small pot and mushy peas were bland. Parking is payable outside as well.

We went for the bottomless brunch & it was brilliant! Delicious food & excellent service. Will definitely go again.

Friendly place, staff are well spoken, used to rave over it and recommend to friends however now the fish are usually small even though I always ask for large so always get 2! Sometimes the gluten free fish is excellent but other times not half as good and once it was overcooked. Shame as the fish CAN be really good. Need consistency. Update 8/11 - tried to overcharge me and I insisted it didn't add up according to their pricelist but was told this is the price on till, until someone else was called. They muttered between them and then asked for the correct amount. There was no explanation or apology even tho expect it wasnt done on purpose, really felt like I was a 'thing' rather than a loyal customer. Not good.

Really disappointed. We ordered 5 portions of cod and chips for takeaway and all 5 portions of chips were overcooked - probably re-fried - leaving them dark brown, rock hard and dry inside. The fish was fine but the chips were all inedible.

Very friendly staff and extensive menu options. The food was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend a visit. I had the halloumi butty, and it was fantastic. Combining a fish and chip place with waffles for dessert is a stroke of genius.

Whilst the food was excellent the service was rather slow. Seems that they had insufficient staff for today. We have not had this problem before.

The food is always good and they cater for people who are gluten intolerant.

Sadly, it’s not as good it used to be. Since the new owners have taken over, we’ve tried on 3 occasions, each time, the gluten free haddock and particularly the batter has been disappointing. I have previously spoken to the team and I was advised they had tried a different supplier. Unfortunately, whilst it’s improved a little, it’s still nothing like the previous batter. The chips have sadly changed too and now rather dry. It’s such a shame as I’ve always loved their fish and chips, however sadly, not the gluten free haven that it once was.

Lovely friendly staff. Had fish and chips which was lovely and huge portions. Unfortunately our pudding waffle had cream on thst had gone off and tasted bad. Exchanged for a new one with no problem. Mot Neen for a whole but was good

Really nice venue. We pre booked for Saturday Lunch but we didn’t need to as the venue had plenty of seats. We ordered cod & fish, battered sausage meal, brisket gravy and rocky road waffle! Overall we had a beautiful meal and the staff were friendly. We would return!

Popped in here a couple of times, food is good, prices are good, always relatively quiet too, sometimes difficult to park though.

Really delicious waffles. Garlic mushroom waffle was my choice. Also serves the most amazing fish and chips too.

Really enjoyed our visit here. My husband found it as we need gluten free for 3/4 of us and it had everything we like on the menus. Main courses were done well and came in good time. Waffles were amazing, although the children’s portion is quite small and they kindly gave my disappointed 9 year old an extra piece. Very nice and attentive waiting staff, clean and welcoming environment. Definitely recommended.

As usual, the food and value were up to normal high standards. The only thing that stopped a 5-star rating was the perfectly pleasant, but slightly lackadaisical and absentminded service. This is still one of our favourite places for a casual lunch out. EDIT. Having returned again, have to say the service needs some work. It should be the job of the waiting staff to be alert for when customers are looking for their attention, rather than having to literally call out so that they don’t just walk away when they have finished serving another table. This won’t stop us visiting but it’s just frustrating that this separates good from great.

Service seems slow and disorganised since ownership changed. Needs work to get standard back up.

First time orderinv online for a takeway. It was wuick and easy with options for gluten free. We ordered gluten free cod and chips to collect and the pice of fish was really biv and the chips were really tasty

It's not the first time we've visited but every time we do Cod and Waffle never disappoint. The food is always gorgeous whether we have a take away or we dine in.

Great place for breakfast, lunch or brunch. Nice atmosphere and tasty dishes. Not overpriced.

Went the other day to buy waffles for my kids. Though the apple crumble waffle (£6.95) was good, banana waffle (£5.80) was just blank (plain waffle with 2 halves of a banana on the top). Didn't expect that for the price paid. Hence 3 stars for the food.

Amazing place. Offer vegan and gluten free combined, and it tasted amazing.

Excellent allergy awareness. Able to get waffles and battered fish that are dairy, egg and gluten free which is very difficult. Normal meal options and prices are ok. Sit in service has sometimes been slow.

Canteen style cafe. Had prawns in batter with chips and dressed salad .Firstly the batter was so greasy I had to remove it from the prawns . Secondly there was no dressing on the salad and thirdly the chips were mediocre and to top it off the rose wine was not cold enough. When I complained about it they didn’t seem at all bothered. Very poor quality food that was very overpriced. I shall never return and I don’t recommend it

Staff are friendly and welcoming, nice decore throughout and food came quickly, was pipping hot and delicious and not over priced. Will definitely go again

Had breakfast here and wasn’t what people raved about. The food hot but albeit not wowing. Service was excellent and attentive shame about the food. I will try at a lunch time though as potential is there for something good

We treated my daughter and a few friends to waffles for her birthday. They very kindly made unicorn waffles for the occasion which the kids were so excited about! The staff were friendly and kind.

So refreshing to go out to eat and have choices. Most places there are a couple of options for gluten free eating but here there is so much choice and the food was really tasty. The staff are all really helpful. It was worth the drive out there. We will definitely return.

Fabulous fish and chips! Would recommend a visit, the service was brilliant and the fish lovely and white, the chips were the best chips I’ve eaten on a very long time.

The staff are incredible. We were a large group with multiple orders and requests and the staff juggled this brilliantly.

I appreciate the review is written during a lockdown. I have never known anywhere requiring a take away fish and chips dinner to be ordered at least 3 hours before it’s required. Yes you read that right. It’s a take away surely can do better...

We came here with friends for a birthday dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. Amazing thick milkshakes and such a great use of waffles. Would recommend it.

The fish is soooo tasty and the batter is not thick and floury like you find elsewhere it’s really light and crispy and the child portions are perfect, plenty of food just a smaller bit of fish. I might try some pie next time looking at the other reviews. I also like that I can order on line and rock up and just collect rather than having to stand in the street with strangers waiting (not great in these times or in winter)

We have been regulars to this Restaurant since their launch and have never had a bad meal. First class take-away fish and chips. Waffles are amazing with various toppings. We particularly like Chilli Veg. but we actually like them all. Staff all very friendly and efficient and well trained in the current Covid situation.

I have raved about the terrific fish n chips, delicious tartar sauce on many occasions.For my last order, however, I fancied something different.I like my food and I like a pie. (my wife cooks amazing pies!!)The usual fish n chip restaurant sells the "Pukka" pie and that's a reasonable product. A couple of pieces of meat and gravy. So with some trepidation I ordered Jenny's homemade "pie of the day"Wow I have never bought a pie that had so much meat. It was delicious, tender and very tasty.I had to play it down a bit in front of my wife .Well done Cod & Waffle.Another brilliantly cooked, served and delicious meal.

Had a takeaway for two, gluten-free fish and chips with a couple of sides for £16. Everything tasted fresh and nicely cooked. Most importantly the batter was thin and crispy. Generous size portions and served in cardboard boxes that kept the food nice and warm on the car journey home. Set up well inside for social distancing. As a Northerner Seasider now living in the South, I've always bemoaned how woefully bad the fish is down here (I wont mention the beer) as it's usually all greasy batter and no fish. This wasn't the case here, really good thick fillets (could've been loins) of haddock and cod. Bravo!

I've been here a few times over the last few months. Firm favourite is the brie and Mediterranean roast vegetable waffle. The restaurant is now one of our favourites locally. Looking forward to trying the halloumi burger and chips eventually.

Good in the early evening with children and later evening for those wanting to avoid them. While I was there there were children, couples and a lone diner (me) all catered for very comfortably. The waffle I had was great.

Went for the first time with my husband having moved recently to Leighton buzzard. We were sat at a dirty table with ice cream spilt in the middle (Which we ended up having to clean) and had to wait for about 15 minutes just for someone to bring us a menu. we only ordered desserts and the Sundae was very watery. We were given 1 tissue between us. When we asked for the bill, we asked for the card machine which took so long that we had to get up and go to them to pay in the end.

Cod and waffle have managed to sort out a way of working to allow its customers to still get tasty fish and chips whilst maintaining social distancing with other customers. They allocate a time slot so there was only 2 other customers in there when I went in to collect and they had the timing down to a tee. Food was lovely as usual. Fish cooked perfectly with a crispy batter. Chips again cooked perfectly. First lock down takeaway we have had and it did not disappoint. Thanks guys for making this such a straight forward process and allowing us to have a weekend treat amongst all the madness!

Orderrd fish & chips, mushy peas, chips and curry sauce and a separate curry sauce and have to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Great service from ordering to social distanced collection. Highly recommend.

Just had the Valentine's Fizz and Chips special. Delicious as always. Staff really friendly and efficient. All topped off with mini sweet waffles and tea/coffee. Perfect!

We tried a takeaway from here, fish n flips and they were the best!Gluten free were as good as eating in and the chips delicious. Hubby mentioned just how there was no grease at all in the box.We’ve had these again and they were great!This is now our go to takeaway !

Today was our second visit. There was 3 of us, I had halloumi burger, husband had breaded fish and son had waffle brunch which was saussages/bacon/egg. It sounds like a random mix but it works and the food is fresh, delicious and of high quality with good service. Great for families. Main and drink for 3 of us cost about £30.

Came here for a weekend brunch and whilst it was clean and spacious, it wasn't that special. Food was ok, but waffles were a bit dry and the hot drinks were crazy hot. Not sure if I'd visit again.

Yep... go on ya own, with friends, I was amazed, this place rocks out great food, really enjoyed the clean, friendly service and real reasonable prices too. Will definitely revisiting this Gem

Located on a new housing development, you wouldn’t know about this place unless told about it, as we were. Set out of town, the building is modern and spacious. Fifteen of us descended on them after a local walk but this didn’t present a problem.

I was recommended this restaurant by a friend and I was not dissapointed. Great access for everyone. Friendly staff and the service was attentive. Had Haddock, chips and mushy peas, even the skin had been removed. Will definitely go again.

Came here for Breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere and music played is great, the place has a real modern feel to it. The menu was extensive and everything sounded appetising. The coffee’s we ordered were extremely nice, and we both couldn’t fault the breakfast we had. We will definitely be coming back to try something from the Brunch menu next time!

If you like waffles this is ideal, nice big relaxed space, great for families and groups of friends. We visited on a Saturday morning after parkrun in a big group including vegans and toddlers and they catered to all of our needs no problem!

Went with friends to this lovely place and was pleasantly surprised to find, not only gluten-free, but also delicious vegan options! Feast Your eyes with my pics... Can't wait to go back and try the Tofish & Chips next week!
