Incoming customers “Stand here to be seated ‘ at the very same place where the outgoing customers pay before leaving that way you cannot be seen.Eventually had to ask a waitress to be seated but was told to wait as she was busy .Four staff serving the tables with nobody in overall charge .Eventually we were shown a seat but our invisible cloak saved us from any waiter or waitress taking our order. The salt was really rubbed in when customers arriving after us were served first .👎😱👎 We stood up and left but our invisible cloak meant we could escape from the cafe without being seen !, If your social life is too busy and you want to waste some time and be ignored then visit this cafe .

My wife and I along with two elderly friends in their nineties, visited the Vintage bric-a-brac sale in the grounds of Cockenzie House today and were looking forward to teas, coffees and cakes at the excellent Filly Cafe on site. We arrived at the cafe at 3.40 p.m. and found that table service stopped at 3.30 p.m. but we could have take away. We returned to the garden with our purchases, which we enjoyed in the sunshine. However, come 4.00 p.m. when one of our friends returned to the house to use the toilet, there was no access and a cleaner suggested she try the British Legion club near bye. I am sure these notes will be useful for anyone intending to visit Cockenzie House, East Lothian.

Stayed in Turret Cottage, really comfortable, clean and perfect venue to relax after watching the golf championships at Muirfield. Fillys Cafe was the icing on the cake! Delicious food, beautifully presented by extremely helpful, friendly and happy staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast menu was varied and exciting. Between us we tried pretty much every option - and we were never disappointed. The cafe is definitely not to be missed if you visit Cockenzie!! Would definitely come back again when we visit the area again.

We were a visiting group of 2 couples lucky enough to find this cafe on our 1st morning in Scotland, how fortunate we were. We only availed of breakfast but what a start to each day this place provided. The breakfast options range from healthy to not quite so healthy, the food is beautifully presented, cooked to perfection and served by the friendliest staff you could possibly meet. The cafe was busy on each of the 4 days that we ate there, the staff were super efficient, fun and added to the eating experience. The fact that the cafe is located on the 1st floor and extensively glazed giving a view of the pretty gardens is the final plus.

Visited for the first time... not a good experience and won't be going back. Waited for 20 minutes for the order to be taken and another 20 minutes for the order to arrive. Service absolutely appalling. Soup salty, had to eat salad with fingers as no fork supplied but then it was just dry leaves with no dressing. Drinks arrived without glasses. Service at table next to us got great service although that might just have been due to them being related to one of the staff. All in all not good.

We regularly come here for lunch/brunch and used to really enjoy it. But recently we have been so disappointed by the quality of the food. We ordered eggs benedict on our most recent visit and had to send it back as it was cold, when our second offering arrived it was not much warmer and the eggs white was very undercooked. Sadly it has put us off eating here. The staff are lovely but did not handle it well either.

Although the house and gardens were a very nice place to visit, the resturatna was very poor. I ordered the Tuscan bean soup and I could find no beans in the soup at all. I highlighted this to the waitress who explained the the soup and been through the blender. Interestingly the blender must have been selective because I could pick out large pieces of courgette and pepper but no beans. As I finished the soup I did find the skin of a chick pea. The waitress wasn't really interested. We decided to not to bother with staying for cake and headed off elsewhere. To be honest if you're going to eat anywhere you could do better than this place

Yesterday, three friends and myself lunched at Caddell's Cafe within Cockenzie House. It is like a light, bright, conservatory built on to the side of the house which, at one time, used to accommodate the stables. There is a steep climb up a flight of stairs from the front garden, so it is not really suitable for disabled people - though it is my understanding that there is a lift available to all levels. There are some lovely views over the grounds and across to the Firth of Forth plus some outside seating which is an added bonus on warm sunny days. Open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. lunchtime specials noted on the board were spicey potato soup, tomato and basil soup, and brie, bacon and cranberry panini. The menu also listed a good selection of sandwiches and panini. So our order was two brie, bacon and cranberry panini, one tuna and one chicken. Each came presented with mixed green salad, slices of tomato, pepper and watermelon, some coleslaw and some crisps. One order for the tomato and basil soup, two apple juices and two coffees. The bill for four light lunches came to just over £25 which I thought was very good value - with gratuity the total bill was £30.This cafe chiefly majors on light lunches, afternoon teas and coffee & cake. It would appear that hot cooked meals are not available. The winter menu might be different though?Disappointingly, the cafe is as yet unlicensed. However, we were advised by a helpful member of staff that this issue is currently being pursued. Alcoholic beverages are usually supplied for events held at Cockenzie House when catering is provided by Saltire Hospitality. This venue is a 17th century manager's mansion which was latterly a nursing home before it morphed into its current incarnation as a community arts, crafts, exhibition and business centre complete with its own cafe and shop. The staff are very friendly and welcoming - and they're always looking for volunteers! This historic and beautiful site is well worth a visit set as it is amongst what could be classified as a cottage garden and grounds. Very relaxing atmosphere if you want to escape to peace and quiet far from the madding crowd. Highly recommended.

Mrs and I decided to pop down to Cockenzie House for a light lunch a couple of Sundays ago. At this time there was a craft fair on in the main house. The café was busy but we managed to get a seat. There appeared to be a couple of waitresses going about who passed our table several times but we appeared to have chosen the table with the cloak of invisibility. We eventually managed to place an order consisting of two coffee's and a steak baguette with chips. After 35 minutes I enquired about the food and was told it was being prepared and would be five minutes. ten minutes later I asked again and heard the waitress shout to the cook about the food and heard the reply she was getting around to it. I then told the waitress not to bother as we were leaving. The management waived the coffee bill as a result. Will we go back, no, will we recommend it to others, no.

Having particularly enjoyed a lunch at the cafe last summer, decided to return. Big disappointment sadly. Despite the website promising a "wide selection of quality meals" the menu is actually very restricted, essentially a few choices of filled rolls or panini or a single soup option. When I saw the lack of choice I was on the verge of walking back out. However, chose a panini, which was ok and came with miserly portions of lettuce, coleslaw and crisps. The cafe benefits from extensive glazing however that's a mixed blessing at this time of year and the room temperature was on the cold side. Won't be rushing back.

arrived on sat 2nd july mid-morning ;sadly the weather was not kind to us as it started to rain so was not able to sample the lovely gardens. However,we sat at a nice table on a 2 seater sofa and looked at the menu served to us by a pleasant waitress. The menu was rather vague as it mentioned that food was served between 10-1pm and were not allowed to sample any lunch items or even soup until 12.30pm!! I was astounded to say the least as the manager came over and told us to order and did not bother to talk us through the blackboard specials .I had ordered a blackboard special breakfast and a ham croissant with 2 filter coffees and came promptly.Toast came with the breakfast without a side plate with disposable butter portions.i was not offered any condiments apart from the salt and pepper which was already on the table.I asked for ketchup and was given 2 disposable portions on a silver plated tray .The eggs, bacon beans and bread were nice;i have never tasted german meatloaf like that in my life!! It tasted like spam on top of a soggy potato rostie! The mushrooms were out of a catering pack and tasted slimy.I know it sounds harsh but they are trying too hard to make it an upmarket cafe.It will not succeed if they carry on like this.A few smiles from staff and a bit of tweaking and tuning and it could be great.Unfortunately,it is not co-ordinated and there is a lack of communication unlike my last visit when the owner served me.I know the company has other outlets but they need to get this branch up to standard as i have visited the others and they are totally different.I was disappointed but would be upset if it was my business.sorry!!

The Cockenzie House and Gardens, specifically the Turret cottage, is a lovely, welcoming place to spend a week. It is attached to a 17th century mansion and the cottage itself has two bedrooms, two baths, kitchen and living room. It is run by Marietta, a very friendly and helpful host. The cottage is nicely decorated and in a great locale. It is easy to get to Edinburgh by either train (5 minute car drive away) or by bus (just outside the mansion). The mansion also contains an art gallery and an award-winning cafe. The breakfast was delicious! Though we didn't have to eat there as breakfast items (tea cakes, eggs, milk, bread, jam, coffee and tea) were available in our own kitchen, The gardens of the mansion are lovely as is the walk along the seashore which is just across the street. You will really feel like you are living in Scotland rather than just visiting and staying in a nondescript chain hotel.

Having gone to all the trouble to go to Cockenzie, maybe a light second course. In fact the traditional meatloaf in a bun with onions was so delicious and so light it seemed a shame not to have a pudding. Apfelstrudel, with just a little whipped cream. Then - a couple of nice little presents for folk on the way out. Some bowl of soup. Our favourite cafe /restaurant in East Lothian. Staff wonderful, always welcoming and happy to help. Coffee excellent. Cakes etc far too tempting. Toasted brioche and jam special favourite. Soups really delicious. Plenty of space. Setting is delightful - looks out over gardens of Cockenzie House.

We had a short trip of 4 days at our friends caravan and called in here. What a find, the food was out of this world, I had the German Gulasch and that was my first surprise I always thought it was a Goulash? The next surprise was the supurb taste and quality of the dish, packed to the top of the bowl to make a man size meal and a selection of tasty bread. The price was very competitive and another surprise ( a good one ) as we expected to pay more for this astounding food. Falko from Gullane have hit the spot.

We were on a driving trip through Ireland, Scotland and England and during our time in Edinburgh we ran into a conflict due to a major concert in town as well as the UN summit, needless to say, we were worried about finding a room. We were able to book the cockenzie house which ended up being better than we could have hoped for. It's a quaint area and the room is attached to a manor house that is beyond spectacular. We had our own rooms along with a sitting area and kitchen. We were also provided eggs, bread, milk, tea and biscuits for the next morning. I wish we had had more time to stay, it was so beautiful. It also is right next to the ocean and is a very short walk with an incredible view! We will be going back!

stopped by here for cake and coffee. Its all gone up market, Falko in Gullane now cockenzie. cakes cut to within an inch shiny and almost polished. must say I like the more rustic. So I have not done the food. I love the grounds, a nice secret garden. The house needs a lot of love, spotted a fox in the grounds. The pond is full of weed. do try the shop, lots of local artists and endless hand made goodies. Cockenzie house has been through a Lot. You know we had a battle here in 45, troops parked in front of the house before doing battle. Then nursing home. so this old girl has been around a lot., Displayed the battle of Prestonpans tapestry for a while. Not to mention a certain person climbing over the was to nick apples, when young.

Cockenzie House is a lovely place to look around and also to visit the Café. You can have tea, coffee and snacks in pleasant surroundings. Cockenzie is unfortunately otherwise lacking in Cafes so worth a visit.

My friends and I visit Falko's The Secret Garden cafe every week whilst walking or cycling from Musselburgh. It is wonderful to have such a delightful place to stop and have a break. You can sit outside or inside, there are lovely views from the windows. It is new but I am sure it will get better as time goes on. The staff are so friendly and cheerful. The cakes are to die for, may be a little expensive but it makes a change from a greasy cafe. All the cakes are delicious, but my favorite is the raspberry one. The lunch menu is really tasty and all homemade. Good veggie choice too. It's great that Falko's are investing in this lovely old buildings by having a cafe here. It's really lovely to have a nice place in this area, so we d'not have to go posh Bruntsfield or Gullane.Cockenzie House is being renovated slowly as it is a charitable organization. They have plants for sale, very cheap, grown in the grounds. There is a little gift shop. Also they hold functions and events. Lots of volunteers helps with all sorts of things. This helps raise money to restore the building. I feel Edinburgh Susan is crazy writing nasty things about this building, she obviously can not see the bigger picture. So support this great place and the cafe and visit next time you are passing.

As regulars at the Falko bakeries/coffee house at Bruntsfield, Edinburgh and their other branch at Gullane, we thought we would give this newly opened venue a try. The waiting staff are friendly enough, if a little all over the place - something we would happily forgive in a place so new... and the cakes and pastries are standard Falko fare - all excellent, but the cafe experience is let down by the grim decor and its broader setting in Cockenzie. Cockzenie House is a not for profit, focused on opening up the space for community use. It's all very worthy, and we enjoyed nosing around the house and garden, presently displaying work of local artists, but I personally have no desire to ever go back again. The house was once grand, and nothing that a skip and a few million wouldn't sort out, but presently it is grim - as is the cafe space. It may all be very worthy, but when you are paying Bruntsfield prices for your coffee and cake, I think you probably hanker after somewhere a little more pleasing. Cockenzie itself has nothing of interest - I can see how locals will be delighted at a new Falko - and the place was certainly busy - but if you have to drive to get here, I think you are better served by the other branch in pretty Gullane village.

Cockenzie & Port Seton was long overdue a decent cafe where you can get great coffee/selection of teas/snacks and cakes to die for! Beautiful outlook over the Secret Garden. Locals need to use this little gem so we don't lose it!

This place was recently taken over by a local Kondeiteroi and it is full of old charm in a wonderful setting. The food is beautiful. My friend and I shared a citroen flan and it melted in your mouth. Open views onto the garden and has a varied menu.

The cafe at Cockenzie House has just been 'taken over' by Falkos which is a well respected coffee-house/bakery in Edinburgh and Gullane. (look up Falkos on tripadvisor).Setting lovely with both internal classic cafe space, sun lounge type space and outdoor eating balcony overlooking the rather wild gardens of Cockenzie House. Great coffee, Fabulous cakes and breads but prices reflect the quality of freshly baked goods. I had a piece of the just right (not too sweet) apple strudle and my son had a large bacon and egg roll. Staff very friendly and informative and walks along the coastal pathway on the Forth Estuary a couple of hundred meters away. The cafe feels like a little oasis of peace when sitting outside with birds chattering and trees rustling rather than traffic or music. Port Seaton, birthpace of Scottish artist, John Bellany, a short walk away.

Firstly the food was not hot enough, the quiche was soggy and at the cost of £15.80 for 2 courses would have thought something other than a bowl of salad would have been served. The apple strudel was very tasty but again seemed to be just out of the fridge, very cold, the menu said warm vanilla sauce again, this was cold.Every one in our party had either cold or warm food.....not good enough. I think this was the owners first night . The staff were all very pleasant, but for the cost, could have been better. But...... its a great place for coffee and yummy cakes.

The restaurant is part of Cockenzie House, a grand old Scottish Mansion. Overlooking huge gardens, light and airy inside and with plenty of space this is a fine place for those with a sweet tooth or maybe a light lunch with a German twist to it.The choice of freshly made cakes, scones, breads etc is grand in scale and the types of cake fillings seem to spill forth from the Black Forest. The 3 of us had cakes (although I am usually more savoury in choice than sweet) and all agreed on the fabulous quality. Coffee was tasty but cooled quickly in the wide mouthed cups.Service was friendly and welcoming.

In what amounted to a stumble upon moment I found myself renting a studio where I could pursue my hobby of landscape painting. The walled property is a haven for birds and other wild life. I will write much much more about this beautiful place later but I must stop now as I have a hospital appointment to attend.

My husband and I stayed in the cottage in September. The cottage is spacious, private, has easy access to the bus and local food. Theres a lovely local place to order fresh, to go, fish and chips. The cottage is a bit dated, but everything was clean and comfortable. We had a lovely stay. If you're looking for 5 star, it's not for you, but for us it was wonderful.

Not a suitable venue for displaying the tapestry. Rooms too small, unable to view without bumping into people, panel numbering system beyond the wit of some visitors, panel displays in corridors hopeless. Freezing cold, no heating, cafe Baltic and coffee lukewarm. Tapestry superb but venue a big mistake, a very big mistake!
