The pub is in a lovely spot, and has had a beautiful refurbishment, unfortunately that’s where the good points end. The food is shocking. Served on chipped plates for a start with an abysmal side of wilting and browning ‘salad’ - literal leaves, and undercooked chips with zero seasoning, Not even offered any salt. Asked for sauces and was supplied literally two tables spoons of ketchup between 2 people. I regret not taking a photo to share, but how anyone could serve that and think it was acceptable was beyond me. If you want to have a lovely meal at a pub with a great atmosphere, stick to The Oxford! I definitely will be in future.

I was here on Saturday 14th May with a party of 8 people. I have to say the food and service was outstanding and this was an opinion shared with others in our group. I had a starter of pate which was very nice. The main course was steak and ale pie. This was one of the nicest steak and ale pies I have ever had with lots of meat. The portion was of a good size. We were served by a lovely young lady who was happy to take photos for us and the landlord himself who was very attentive. I had a pint of Unicorn and this was a lovely pint. There was a good vibe in the pub with quite a few people in the lovely beer garden to the rear. I would recommend a visit to this lovely place.

This visit was a rare occasion that we get over from South Yorkshire to see my mum in Whitworth and i thought it would be convenient to eat at the Cock & Magpie seeing as she just lives round the corner. I emailed the Cock & Magpie the day before our visit to ask if we would be able get a table for lunch for 3 people on Thursday 23rd and got the reply “That will be fine thank you. We look forward to seeing you” We arrived and asked for menus, then we were told that not everything would be available on the menu. That was an understatement. Mum can’t eat gluten or red meat and the only gluten free items on the main menu were 3 dishes, the steak, the gammon and the mixed grill meals. They had no chicken, beef or burgers. Sausage and mash was on the website menu but not on the printed copy in the bar. So I was told if it’s not on the printed menu, we haven’t got it! I know there are issues with deliveries etc at the moment but if Derek had mentioned this in the email, we wouldn’t have bothered going. I doubt we will be back.

A Nice little pub with good atmosphere for a few drinks with friends - Although the smoking area is a little confusing to find - And not 100% keen on it being right next to the mens loos.

A lovely feel and atmosphere. Relaxed with the feel of a true country pub. A cracking place to call in for a great pint or a bite to eat after a crisp walk around Cowm reservoir. The beer is as good as you'll get for miles around. Food is always of good quality and plentiful. Nice staff who are always on hand to assist. Always pleasant. A place I enjoy and always feel able to relax and chill out - exactly what a good pub should provide.

Food really nice and fresh. I had lamb cutlets and was asked how I would like them cooked. Very tasty, I did have to ask for gravy though as the meal may have been a little dry but maybe that's just a personal preference for me. Veg were nicely cooked and I chose chips which were gorgeous. Service was excellent, the young lad that served us was very polite and friendly. I would definitely go back.

Booked a table for eight adults and three children when ordering the meals were told that there was no bacon for the all day breakfast which is bad when your son owns the butchers about half a mile away and no wraps this was only at 4.30 in the afternoon hope they can do better next time if I give them a second chance.

This family run pub manages to cater for both locals and visitors making all feel welcome and valued. Not a 'Gastro' pub and certainly not 'spit and sawdust' either, the Cock and Magpie fills that middle ground perfectly. Nice warm fire in the winter and outside seating in the summer make it appealing all year round. The food is excellent with a good menu to choose from and service is polite and friendly without being over attentive. Can't comment too much on the desserts as we're usually too 'stuffed' by that point to indulge...!Although there's only one real ale on offer it is well kept and provides a lovely pint. The landlord indicated that a second ale would be on offer shortly. Well worth a visit if you get the chance or are in the Whitworth area.

Visited early Saturday evening and although it was reasonably busy we had our food within 10mins of ordering which was good as we had our grand daughter with us who was very hungry. The pub was clean, nicely decorated and was lovely and warm with a feature log burner. There were plenty of staff who were both pleasant and efficient. The food was good quality with good portion sizes and for two starters, two main meals, a child's meal and 6 drinks it was less than £35!. Will definitely be going again, great value for money!!

Starting with the good, the food was good value for money however I would rather eat overpriced microwaved food and have a land lady that actually cares about her Cliental. The previous reviews do not reflect and the landlady We experienced. I realise not all landlady appreciate children in a pub, however as responsible parents of well behaved children we always make sure the public house promotes a 'family friendly' environment before we try it out and we also leave before 8pm. The landlady clearly didn't want our custom and clearly and openly paid all her attention to the 'regulars' drinking the half pints. Leaving us waiting for our bottles of wine for well over 20 minutes. One of our children asked for a packet of crisps which was practically throw at her, no adult/child interaction. would not recommend unless you are known to the landlady. Clearly doesn't want new custom. (Suspect previous good reviews are known there)

The new owners have created a very welcoming and relaxed atmosphere whilst keeping the character and charm of this traditional pub. The food has been great on each of the number of occasions we've eaten there. Very good Mixed Grill!A night out too is a great experience. The relaxed and friendly approach of the Landlord and Landlady washes over those in there to enjoy themselves. Highly recommend a visit - and a stay for some grub.

This pub has recently come under new owners and has been transformed. The place has been completely revamped and redecorated. It was very friendly and welcoming. Having just called in for a quick drink while passing we ended up staying and having something to eat. The menu has something to offer everybody and was thoroughly enjoyable. It is defiantly somewhere we will be visiting again especially in summer when we can enjoy the large beer garden. Would rate this pub to anybody very welcoming and family friendly :)

The outside looked lovely with a number of colourful hanging baskets at the front, however, on entering the pub I felt a definite lack of atmosphere, the pub was shabby and needed sorting out and the landlord wasn't friendly at all. After a fair wait for a pre-prepared microwaved sunday roast it arrived. The whole dish was tasteless and I couldn't eat it, the landlord wasn't interested and didn't even ask why we had left most of it! At one point I saw the waitress (the landlords daughter) handing out 2 slices of bread in her hands, no plate!!!Don't bother going, you may be disappointed.

This is a small pub in which you will find full of locals. The food is of average taste and value with some things being nice and some not so. Its not the type of place you would set out to eat at however if your going in for a drink you may grab some food too if hungry. The size portions are decent and the price is reasonable. Service can be either friendly or its a common joke that one member of staff is not so friendly. Its all part of the Cocks charm. This is definately a locals pub where everyone can meet up for drink and some entertainment.

10.10.24. Arrived for lunch. Starter was great and presented well ( see pic ) . Service : appalling. Cutlery for the main course was dumped on the table ( both sets dumped down together while the server walked off ) . Ordered a drink and had to wait 5 mins whilst staff were stood laughing and joking behind the bar ( the pub wasn't busy ) . Main course: i ordered gammon . The pineapple looked as if it had been been deep fried and was swimming in oil, the mushroom was under the gammon and looked disgusting . No one came over and asked how was our meal; if that had happened , I would have showed them my meal. Overall : terrible and never again . I've been coming to the Whitchaff for over 45 years and this was the worst meal I had ever had .
