Coates House in North Somerset

Went here for a Sunday roast and the food was great. I chose pork and the pork loin was very soft and tasty, it wasn't pork belly but it came with the crackling. The slices had the perfect thickness. Delicious and generous Yorkshire Puddings. The portion of side veggie was spot on, no wasted food at the end. Felt happy for that, manage to finish it all without being stuffed, which means there was still space for desert. The deserts are exceptional, the Belgium Waffle with salted caramel ice cream and caramelised pecans was a no brainer. So good. Very good ambiance, staff really nice and pet friendly. Depending where you seat, you'll be able to see the kitchen staff working and preparing your food. Calm and organised environment. It is a great pub in the heart of a great town. Free carpark within 50 yards.

Lovely food and the chips are freshly cut proper chips! Staff all lovely. The menu is very varied and prices are good. I haven't got past the scampi yet because that too is so good! A real find and the food is served very quickly too. It's so nice to find a restaurant that actually serves proper chips! It's a rare find! Love this place and that's down to the care they put into serving good food *****

This place was great when it opened then went downhill for a while, but it's back with a vengeance. Good solid pub grub and a few good beers. Great chips. A few vegan options. I wish they'd display a menu outside but otherwise a spot-on local pub.

Really excellent all round. Met friends for lunch. Wendy couldn't have been more helpful and made us feel very welcome from booking, table service and patiently waited while we ordered from lunch menu. Good selection and all well presented.

I have eaten here numerous times over a 5 year period and the food was always top notch and the customer service was fantastic. At one point my partner and I used to have a meal here every week, however they must have changed chef and staff as the food quality is completely different. We were both absolutely gutted as we used to enjoy eating here so much. My meal was so awful I had to send it back, which I have never ever done before at any restaurant. The meat was so dry with barely any meat to it and mostly fat, the mash potatoes was lumpy and cold, the broccoli was old and overcooked. The only thing that was edible was the carrots and parsnips, and there was very few of those, but there was no herbs, not even salt and pepper, on anything. My partners meal wasn't much better and he had to force himself to eat it. It honestly felt like a school meal, especially seeing how there food used to be made with such care, flavour and was nice on the eyes and to taste. Such a shame.

Came for a Christmas lunch yesterday, we were a very large table. The food and service was great. The roast turkey and veg was served hot, and simple - just want you want for a Christmas roast. No fancy additions and the perfect amount of gravy! The staff were great (and patient) too. I haven't been before, but will be back. Our table also included vegetarian and gluten free, which was all catered for. Thank you.

Very poor. Breakfast Beans had too much sauce and were cold, the rest of the Breakfast was luke warm at best. They forgot my eggs. Coffee wasn't very nice, personal choice and taste I know. When the staff enquired how everything was I winced and said not great. Her response was 'oh, cool"......wtf!

Had breakfast here with my wife. Thick rashers, butchers sausages, just great all round. I also prefer the coffee here, less bitter than Costa, roastier than Coffee 1, same quality as Livro but not echoey

My husband and I are new to the area & thought we'd give this place a try for dinner - so glad we did! I think it will be difficult to top for quality and charm so I've got a feeling we'll be back soon. The food is delicious, large portions and very reasonably priced (good wine as well!) Our servers were very sweet and attentive and the overall ambience was cosy like the best pubs are but felt elegant enough for a date night. 5 star experience all round!

Lived in Nailsea for years, never been in here. It has new management since Jan 2024, new menu and decor, and what a difference. Fab staff, great food and lovely atmosphere. A little hidden gem. Will be a regular stop moving forward. Ended up staying for two extra coffees, didn't want to leave lol.

Lunch today, we had excellent service from efficient and friendly staff. The cod gujon sandwich served with a lovely salad and homemade chip was absolutely delicious. Staff checked regularly to ensure we had the best experience.

We had a fantastic experience at Coates House this weekend, The steak sandwich was without doubt the best I’ve ever had and was really great value, Staff were very helpful, service was fast and there was a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend

Coates House is a find and a must go to venue for amazing food - cooked by chefs who believe that fresh is best..the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the staff take the time to talk with customers and give them the best service. If you want a special place for tea and coffee, Coates House won't disappoint...by the way, their home cakes and Sunday lunch are a must!

I like that you can get a breakfast/brunch dish all day. I had Eggs Royale, delicious by the way, for dinner. My partner recommends the Tagine. Place itself is nothing fancy but the staff were great and seemed both grateful and surprised to be given a tip. Parking nearby though during shopping hours it would be a bit trickier. Reasonably priced, decent choice of drinks. Vegan choices fairly restricted. I'll definitely be returning. High chairs available for little uns.

Great visit to Coates. We had a super meal which was all freshly made on the premises. We had a fish & chips & the chicken jalfrezi from the specials board. There is always a good choice of food & drinks on the menu with freshly ground coffees. They use local suppliers for their quality ingredients, another reason to support this local independent business. The premises are dog friendly & always lovely & clean with friendly welcoming staff. Well done & thank you Emma & Terry for another fab experience.

Another fabulous visit to Coates House. It is really worth waiting the extra few minutes for fresh, delicious , home cooked food made from scratch. I have always had a great meal at Coates. The management are proactive and always willing to listen to suggestions from customers. A great variety of specials on offer, with a menu that is constantly developing. Delicious cakes and drinks. Bravo Emma and Terry for the successful changes you have made and continue to make.

Great local pub, food excellent

We went here for our father's day meal, 3 dad's and our partners. The place was not busy and the food was first class, some of the menu was off, but we were offered alternatives. The staff did get our order a bit wrong but we were happy and did not complain. I would go again.

It's a family-style coffee shop with a nice atmosphere. The only drawback is that the food is pretty mediocre, but the environment is really comfortable.

Just visited for a low-key birthday celebration on Sunday evening. Have been for daytime coffees so thought we'd give it a go. Have to say we were rather disappointed. My daughter had the roast which had clearly been kept warm since lunchtime (maybe not the best choice), the beef was on the chewy side. My husband had the pie which he said was lovely. Sadly the amount of veg served with the two dishes was insufficient, was really on suitable for one portion. I had the curry which was tasty, just not enough rice. All in all, Coates LL etc themselves down on lack of veg and rice. Maybe a earlier cut off time for the roast as better to finish early than serve up potatoes which are way past their time. Service wasn't brilliant, we didn't wait any longer for dessert menu, we just went to the desk and paid. Always try and support local businesses, but I don't think we will be returning. Shame as they've done a fab job on the renovations.

Recent change of hands and the quality of food and service is even better. Easily the best place in Nailsea.

Needs to improve its beer range to keep long-standing customers. Was once a great place to find ales from local breweries, now choice of one for £6.

Probably great for families, but it was noisy, full of pushchairs & not really conducive to a nice chat over coffee.

I've been coming to Coates for years and it's been consistently great. This was my first visit since change of owners. Got there just before midday, all was well, friendly staff, we ordered and received our tea before the food. We were so into chatting before we suddenly realised we'd been waiting over 40 minutes. My friend asked and we discovered our order hadn't been put through, even though we'd paid for it. We were asked if we still wanted it and we said of course we did but it had to be very quick as my friend was catching a train. One of the staff came and said it was her fault and apologised and said we could have something extra or a discount. We went for a discount. My friend and I both felt it was unfair to the member of staff that the manager didn't come and apologise as ultimately it is their responsibility. Anyway, we got our food which was good and some money off. And my friend just got to her train on time (luckily we'd got to Coates early otherwise she'd have missed it or we would have gone hungry. I will go again but urge management to take more accountability.

Stopped for a quick lunch one Friday just as the new Autumn/Winter menu has been launched. This is the chicken schnitzel and battered hake garlic ciabattas with a side of fries. We were a little worried about having enough time to eat but this arrived promptly. The food was very tasty although there was a little too much garlic in the bread. But this is a consistently good neighbourhood cafe bar which is always on our list of places to eat.

I went there for an evening meal. The steak was good. Potion of chips was a lot got one person . Wine was good. Staff excellent. Food very good. I would go there again.

Good place for brunch! Though, no smoked salmon and poached eggs which is what I really fancied!! And no eggs Benedict! But there is a lot on the menu and what I did have was also very nice (effectively a fish finger sarnie) Also had a home made smoothie which was good, but one of the group had a lemonade and did not like it much

Would highly recommend the bottomless brunch. My friends and I had a great time.

My partner and I had an incredible meal here that was only surpassed by the wonderful service. The fish dishes were immense and perfectly balanced and all for a price that was unreasonably low. Highly recommended for anyone in the area!

As part of my 'fee' for legal work, I entertained my solicitor at this venue for lunch. He was well happy with fish and chips, I wish I had chosen better. The Rioja, however, was superb and I could easily have shared another bottle - but he had to get back to the office. An amiable place, the staff is clearly customer focused, with an eclectic setting. Obviously popular with locals and shoppers. If I'm there again, I'll be more careful with my meal selection

Came for a lunch with a friend and was told there would be a half hour wait for food, which was fine. Regrettably I had to repeatedly ask for our coffee order to be taken and gave up waiting for our food order to be taken after 45 minutes despite later arriving tables being attended to. Shame

Very friendly staff. A reasonable menu. Good selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. There is a mix of seating types; some wooden, some leather settees and a mixture of different types of tables. I go there quite frequently for the coffee and gluten free (or maybe low gluten) chocolate brownies, which are delicious!

Pretty poor compared to previous experience a few weeks ago. Chicken burger burnt and sent back. The second burger also burnt. Staff would rather chat then offer service. Really would avoid like the plague.

Had a bite to eat here on a Friday lunch time with a 4 year old and we will certainly go back soon. Go for a coffee, do a bit of work, have a few beers or do what we did and have a family lunch. Pretty much for every scenario this place ticks the boxes. The food was cooked well and tasty and the service was friendly. It's a comfortable place where you could easily spend a couple of hours. There's games available for little ones and I was a fan of their house pilsner. 👍👍👍

Lovely place. Very friendly staff. Strolled in based off of previous reviews and wasn’t disappointed. The buttermilk chicken burger was great. Lovely steak as well. Also a bonus of happy hour cocktails and kids meal was a pound. All round great good. Would highly recommend
