Had a meal today at Coast restaurant Hastings College....3/4 of us were vegans so I asked if those 3 could have a choice. They did us proud. The service was excellent. We enjoyed coming before covid. Post covid there is an added refinement.

From the moment you sign in at the college reception until you leave, you are made very welcome in this college. Three course meal with menu choices for £18. Bar available. Time has been taken to make the rooms used like a real restaurant. Quality service well supervised by lecturers. At the end of the meal, all they ask is you fill in the feedback form honestly. Tips are welcome and are shared or used for all students

A superb lunch at Coast Restaurant today! I was spoilt for choice - everything on the menu sounded tempting..Starter was a crab tart served over samphire, main was baby artichokes, buttery spinach, herb fried polenta with a chickpea sauce,,,and chocolate mousse for dessert. Compliments to the chef - and the service was friendly and quick. Best lunch I have had in a while! Highly recommend 😊

I went to Coast Restaurant, located within Hastings College, after seeing a Facebook post that they were looking to rebuild custom after Covid. I'm so glad I did! Fabulous service and a fine dining experience for unbelievably good prices around £4 for starters and desserts and £8-10 for mains. The parsnip and truffle soup with pine nuts and truffle oil was delicious and the sticky toffee pudding a little taste of heaven! The students, both cooking and waiting did a fine job. Thank you for a wonderful lunch!

If catering students are to succeed in their careers, they need a good introduction. This training restaurant, in an unassuming modern college is an absolute gem.An attractive room with a visible kitchen it quietly and effectively delivers as good (if not significantly better) an experience as any top notch restaurant in a 50 mile radius.Food is cooked skilfully and creatively. The students exude confidence and charm. Prices are excellent. There are a range of ‘special’ events and we look forward to returning and becoming regulars

I went to lunch today at Coast Restaurant Hastings - it was delicious, one of the best lunches I have had in a long while. The service was friendly and helpful :)I chose the vegetarian options which included a beet, fennel, apple and walnut salad, vegetable tagine with rice and raspberry créme brulée. The presentation was flawless, a lot of care went into the preparation. The new head chef, Patrick, stopped by our table to see how we enjoyed our meal. Will definitely be coming back soon.

Had lunch recently and my seated position gave me a direct view into the kitchen. The chef who I assumed to be the teacher, did 90% of the work. Every item plated except mashed potato was done by hand. I dish up at home using an appropriate utensil. I notice that all the TV chefs use their fingers constantly, why?? My partner had two dishes that were both accompanied by identical salads. The server constantly called her 'sweets' which did not go down too well. The food was not bad but I'm old school and don't like my food manhandled.

The food was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the steak and Frito misto but my absolute favourite was the Cherry and Vodka sorbet. I was great seeing the students learn how to do things and watching the chefs make the meal. Overall very happy with the experience, only one bit of feedback which is that the apple juice needs to be shaken first.

The two of us visit Hastings few times a year for two reasons - lovely long seaside walks and very good food at Coast Restaurant. We got greedy on this occasion and had two meals there - lunch on Wednesday (straight from the railway station!) and dinner on Thursday. There is no question that both staff and students are coping magnificently with the current challenges - wearing masks and observing social distance rules is not easy at the best of times but in a restaurant setting it must be really daunting. Of course at the end of the day the food still has to be the star of the show and, as on previous visits, it proved to be very good with some really outstanding dishes - the mackerel course and apple dessert spring to mind not to mention fillet of beef which was cooked to perfection! It was well worth the return visit and we look forward eagerly to our next trip in November - lunch and dinner already booked! Thank you everybody for another delightful experience.

Coast restaurant hosted my husband's birthday lunch and we cannot thank them enough. From the friendly advice during the planning stage, through to the event on the day, no detail was too much for the team. The eclectic atmosphere created by stylish decor and beautiful lighting far exceeds any expectation on a College restaurant but actually raises the bar high for any restaurant anywhere. The food was delicious - with all the guests commenting that they were delighted with their choice - and every dietary requirement was catered for with a great option. The team in the kitchen produced consistently high quality across each and every course with presentation kept to very professional standards. The front of house team were excellent and attentive whilst being friendly and helpful to the guests of all ages. In short - if you haven't tried it do - you won't be disappointed and you will be back very soon ...

Was very optimistic about going to Coast. £21 for a 5 course meal...outstanding! Before you read further, yes they take credit card, the entrance is via the main college entrance (next to Costa) and the bar is better stocked than many restaurants in the town.Once greeted, we were then led back outside to sofas to enjoy canapes...which we had no idea of what they were...and a small glass of wine, rather than the complementary cocktail as per the menu. We were called through and seated quickly. We were given our menus and selected starters and mains.Starters arrived after around 15 mins. My scallops with chorizo were divine and hubby loved his duck. Our plates were cleared and our mackerel arrived within 2 minutes. We ate that, then the delicious coconut sorbet arrived within 2 minutes. After clearing that, our mains were with us within 3 minutes. My rack of lamb was delicious, cooked beautifully, although the meat itself was rather more fatty than I'd have chosen. Hubby really enjoyed his pasta. Menus back with us to choose puddings, and again they arrived quickly after ordering. Hubby's bread and butter pudding was one of the best he's eaten. My chocolate and pecan cheesecake was good, but more coconut flavoured than pecan flavoured.Overall, it was a good time, but it was too fast for us. We arrived around 7.25. We sat outside with canapes for around 10 minutes. We were finished eating at 9.05, credit card slip shows payment at 9.12. That's an impressive speed for a 5 course meal. We'd have much preferred to have eaten with courses spaced out more. Many people around us who arrived before us were still awaiting pudding when we were leaving. Don't know why things were so fast. Our server was doing a good job learning his trade and the managers were obviously teaching, although at times the correction could have been done a little more privately to the servers IMO, just to keep the professional manner up. If we return, then we'll be clear with the server that we want more time between courses.

Visiting this restaurant is always a pleasure and it was no different on this occasion. If truth be known the french themed dinner last Wednesday transported us to a high class French brasserie in Paris or, at the very least, to Zedel's in London. The food and service was comparable to many high end establishments and were matched by a delightful ambiance with the french accordion music playing in the background. The restaurant was tastefully decorated to chime with the evening's theme and the tables were immaculately set with an array of cutlery to accompany every course. The menu, from the starting cocktail to the last morsel of cheese, was well thought out and perfectly executed. There is no doubt that in order to achieve such high standard the students are guided by a very dedicated staff and their charges may have every confidence that, upon graduation, they will be able to work at any level in their chosen profession. It was very impressive to see the progress they have made since we first saw them in September. Finally I would like to apologise to Dawn for my prosopagnosia but I have no excuse for bringing "Gwen" into the conversation, especially since I do not know any Gwens!Anyway, thank you all and I look forward to dinning (hopefully many times!) at the Coast Restaurant from September onwards.

Some months ago I booked up for the Valentines Night themed menu at Coast Restaurant. Having eaten here before I knew it was a safe bet for a night of excellent food and I wasn't disappointed. If you don't know the restaurant, it is set within the East Sussex College building at Hastings. The resatuarant is staffed mainly by students both in the kitchen and front of house, to give them experience of what it is like to work int hat environment.Arriving just before 7pm we were met at the door and our coats taken, before being shown to the waiting area. Here we were offered the option of a cocktail or mocktail (for those of us who were driving) and some hors d'oeuvres and allowed to settle in with these for a little while, before being shown to our table for the evening. Here we were presented with the menu for our 6 course feast by Georgina, our very pleasant waitress, who remained attentive all evening without being overbearing. The restaurant was filling up fast by now and within the hour looked to be at capacity, so there was a nice atmosphere without it being too loud.We were then presented with the Mezze to share, which comprised marinated beef, marinated peppers, hummus, tabouli, pitta bread, chicken skewers, vegeatable skewers and the most delicious marinated tomatoes with feta that I have ever tasted. Frankly I could have sat there all night just eating those. We then moved onto the fish course which was a prawn terrine which was not to my taste, but I think you should always try things. Fish eaters would probably love it.We were then presented with a Mojito Sorbet, which was lovely, beautifully made and we both agreed that we loved it.For the main course my Wife had the Goats Cheese Tart which being vegetarian, she was delighted with. It was tasty well made and well cooked. I opted for the Vegan Butternut & Sweet Potato Curry. Now, I love curry and I am trying to be vegetarian (ok so I didnt do well with the starter!) but I am not a great fan of Butternut or Sweet Potato - or at least I wasn't - but I do love a curry. This showed how delicious a vegan meal can be if properly cooked and this was delicious.Almost stuffed to the brim we were then tasked with choosing a sweet. I opted for the trio of chocolate mousse with cherry compote, strawberry tart and a berry and mascarpone mille feuille and my Wife for the Cinnamon, Apple, Maple & Pecan Sponge pudding with Brandy and sultana cream. Again beautiful flavours, well cooked pastry and sensible portions ensured that the meal finished on a high note.A large pot of tea followed to finish off what was a wonderful evening of food.Just a note about the students as well. Georgina our waitress was a pleasure all evening. She came across as a little nervous, but when you are learning and you are confronted with a dining hall full of paying guests, that is to be expected, but she delivered the food well and did a very good job. We also had a chat with a young lad who had been behind the bar, who told us how he wanted to be a pastry chef so I really hope he realises his ambition. We were told at the end of the evening that th menu had been put together entirely by the students and cooked entirely by the students, which was a fantastic achievement and something for them to be very proud of.This was my third visit to the restaurant and I am already looking forward to my fourth!

The environment is lovely, the starters often lovely too...but then onwards sorely lacking, especially for vegetarians and even more so for vegans. I had a mushroom linguine as the vegetarian option....pasta is so uninspiring and for me did not taste good so I left some of it...our friend had a taste and did not like it either. Meanwhile Mum and our friend had a well displayed lovely salmon dish with fennel. Two of the three sweets had gelatine in them. Veganism is so popular now some restaurants have a separate menu for vegans and vegetarians. One humble cafe I go to near Ickelsham makes sure their vegetarian option is vegan and gluten free to tick alot of boxes at once. With vegan margarine, vegan cream, vegan milk and vegan cheese so easily sourced now I do think the students could be taught to do something similar. It would not have to require advanced cooking skills for those in their first year. Vegan sponge could be more challenging...but definitely on trend too. Every time I fill in their questionnaire i say something about this....but nothing seems to happen. They don't even have a vegan milk for tea and coffee. However they tried to give me something for sweet as an alternative which was actually lovely, a lemon sorbet with orange sorbet. This was followed by my delightfully displayed coffee in a polished silver coffee pot....sadly no soya milk tho.The waitress was very apologetic...I felt she got my point. The visiting chef came out to see me and did too, while stressing the students were still learning.

An absolutely wonderful place to come to be utterly spoilt with culinary delights! Waiting staff were ‘on it’ despite 2 of our party arriving unavoidabley late, staff were both patient and super attentive to our needs. During our 5 course festive menu, we sampled a broad spectrum of the evenings menu between us and needless to say, all 6 of us were thrilled with every delicious plate presented to us by the friendly waiting staff. We have already booked to return for Valentine’s Day and cannot wait! I only wish that this gem of a restaurant were open every day but it only makes the chance to dine here even more special. The students, teaching and waiting staff are doing Hastings a fantastic service, offering a uniquely superb dining experience. We had such a wonderful evening. I was very dubious about experiencing food here...its a college..people are "learning" how to cook rather than "knowing" how to cook. But we all have to start somewhere right? And what better way to kick start someone's career, passion and talent than being the very guinea pigs they need to sample their skills, knowledge and experience so far?

Eight of us met at the Coast for lunch as we had been to the seafood weekend we had been given two for one tickets. We were seated at a round table and very quickly our orders for drinks were taken. As anyone who has been to the Coast will know this is a restaurant served by students under strict supervision. Starters for us were mushrooms in a creamy sauce, tomato and basil soup and trout with grapefruit, all were very good. Mains were cod with risotto, or chicken breast with seasonal vegetables, pasta and anchovies, all these very tasty. To follow a selection of puddings followed by tea or coffee. Excellent value, and very good service from students and tutors. Would thoroughly recommend. This restaurant is also open on Thursday evenings and has themed dining.

Coast is the training restaurant at Sussex Coast College. Located on the first floor of a modern campus conveniently positioned next to Hastings Station. We had lunch; (2 courses £8.95, 3 courses £9.95) with crisp linen and silver service prepared and served by hospitality students under the eagle-eyed supervision of their tutors. The standard of service was very high and the food excellent. For starters we chose French onion soup, mackerel and horseradish pate, Greek salad and chicken and tahini salad. All of these were well presented and delicous being accompanied by freshly baked bread rolls and butter.Mains included pan fried plaice with mushroom puree and new potatoes and smoked haddock risotto with spinach and poached egg. Our party opted for excellent, tender, shoulder of lamb which was served on ratatouille and herb mash also bruschetta with fried halloumi and Mediterranean vegetables. 2 of us has space for desserts - lemon posset with biscuit and double chocolate terrine with fruit coulis both delicious. With a bottle of white wine at £12 and a pint of craft lager at £4 fantastic value. All this was even more impressive as this was only the second day of the new term. The service was impeccable. The food delicious, the staff friendly and polite. The atmosphere relaxed. The ladies toilet by the way sparkled, so clean.Mum was in a wheelchair, and it was so easy to access. Plenty of room at the table for her chair.

Visited this restaurant with a completely open mind as I knew the concept behind it was to give students work experience, I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at the standard, value for money and atmosphere. The food was was tasty & very well presented. Value for money was incredible a four course meal just over £20 per head and there was a few extra nice touches such as a cocktails of the day on arrival. I would highly recommend visiting for something a little different. I can't commend the idea behind this restaurant enough and it's nice to see the experience it brings to the students.

We used to go to the training restaurant many years ago when it was in the old Hastings college. So we had high hopes when we decided to revisit in November and then again for the Christmas Lunch in December. The trainee waiting staff varied considerably and we enjoyed watching them. Some had obvious potential while others appeared to be clueless and part of the pleasure of going regularly is to hopefully see them develop and gain in confidence. The quality of the food and presentation is as good as it always was and represents outstanding value.Good fun, good food and a good experience.

We were part of a group of ten, and were impressed by how well the students coped with a large table, during a very busy lunchtime service. Our meals arrived promptly and with a smile, and were of a very high standard. Both the waiters/waitresses and the kitchen staff (who could be clearly seen) seemed calm and efficient, and worked well as a team. The salmon mousse and the crème brulée were particularly delicious. Well done to all.

This is a catering college's training restaurant for pupils undertaking food & beverage service under the direction of tutors. It is a very good restaurant & offers exceptional value for money. One has to accept these are pupils & you cannot therefore expect perfection as you might if in a normal restaurant situation. However we had an excellent four course dinner with pre dinner cocktail & canapés beforehand. The menu choices were good & what turned up was good & matched expectations. We had a super meal & look forward to eating here again. Friendly & attentive. Good luck to all on the course & thank you for last night. The restaurant was running a 2-4-1 lunch or dinner offer which made the night out exceptionally cheap.

As a senior freelance lecturer my wife and I have travelled all over the world. We took a professional interest in this college restaurant and were not let down. What a wonderful opportunity these students have to learn about catering. It was nice to see that the head lecturer Scott believed in the old style silver service where you serve to the left and take away from the right and wine and drinks are served to the right. So many restaurants, whether Michelin star or not, simply plonk the food down so it is good to see the old standards being upheld. The menu is varied and our starters were garlic mushrooms in a wonderful sauce on focaccia bread, which was absolutely delicious and frito misto with chili sauce, also delicious. For mains we had breaded plaice which my wife found slightly overcooked and dry but mine was OK, together with good tartare sauce, mushy peas and chips which could have been cooked a fraction longer to make them crispy but because of a back-up in the kitchen they were a bit rushed! Our desserts were bread and butter pudding which I thought could have done with a little more spice but that's only personal preference, and my wife thought her pannacotta with berries was the best she had ever tasted, super silky and smooth! We had drinks, which were reasonably priced and our waitress was polite and keen. On this occasion we had a coupon to use for a free lunch for one of us, so that made this meal a real super saver at only £13.40 for two. They also accept Tastecard which we have so we will definitely return. They change the menu every two weeks so there is plenty of choice. The students behind the bar were very efficient and friendly and the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. We would heartily recommend a visit or several visits to anyone!

My husband and I have visited the Coast Restaurant many times during this academic year. One cannot fault the lunchtime menu. There are good choices for the starter, main course and dessert. This is a training restaurant and so one is served by the students. What a delight they are and it has been interesting to see how their confidence has grown as the year has progressed. We shall be back as the experience of dining at the Coast Restaurant is too good to miss!

Our ratings: Service: 9/10, Starters 8/10, Mains 6/10, Dessert 9/10A very nice experience in this student-staffed training restaurant. It was a real pleasure to have a properly served meal. Service was similar to a 4-5 star restaurant. The meal was also a good value compared to any similar place we could have eaten. Starters were very good: we had vegetable tempura and chicken livers on toast. Dessert was excellent with poached pear & homemade chocolate ice cream & raspberry fool. Unfortunately the mains let the meal down. We had pork escaloppe milanese which in english means, breaded fillet of pork with spaghetti, and haddock on lemon basil risotto. Both mains seemed a bit bland and uninspired. I understand the chefs are still in training, but neither of these really stands out as a dish you'd expect to have in a 'fine dining' type restaurant. Finally we had the coffee course, and while I was hoping for a fine espresso coffee. Sadly, that is only available for the evening meal. But still good to have a coffee to finish the meal as you would customarily have in France or Italy. Overall, with the quality of service and the apetizers and deserts we were happy with our experience and would definitely return.

It is quite rewarding to be cooked and served dinner by the next generation. What they lack in expertise they compensate for with enthusiasm. They lack experience but not talent. Good food; attentive service and well matched wines made it an excellent value meal.

Today we had a lovely lunch at the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good and would definitely go there again for lunch...maybe Christmas? The only downside was the ambience was a little bland...very basic. The experience overall was good though.

It was the first evening of the New a Term at the Coast Restaurant.. A very warm welcome, we were served with a cocktail and canapés. A very nice gesture. A good menu with a sorbet to cleanse the palette between courses. Although this was forgotten! Nerves..... This was amended once we said it had been missed. The students were nervous as this was their first time on frontline serving on tables.. All in all they did do very well. The students were closely chaperoned and when needed the overseer very delicately guided them. The food was good and beautifully presented. £20 per head was reasonable. But the wine we chose was rather expensive.. £20 a bottle.Perhaps our next visit we shall choose their 'house wine'.We will certainly be returning.

Coast is a training restaurant operated and run by the catering and hospitality students from the college. I've eaten there several times in the past two years at different themed nights including two murder mysteries. Although the scripts were murdered the food was not. Silver service with some lovely young people with their tutors and mentors looking on. I love the decor which is very "mid 20th century" with a mixture of iconic 70s furniture and some of the best f kitsch "Trechnikoff era" adornments. You must go. A full 5 courses including complementary cocktail is £20 - £25. This is a must to visit.

I have been here on a couple of occasions and often went to the Channel View restaurant at the old Archery Road site. I have never had a bad meal and the quality of food is very good indeed. I doubt that you can get a better lunch or dinner in Hastings for the price that is charged. Drinks are very reasonably priced too. The students are sometimes nervous but this just adds to the charm; they are all training and you have to expect the odd thing to go wrong - just accept it, go with the flow and try to put them at their ease.

Good food and very reasonable. This training restaurant for the students of the culinary college offers both lunch or dinner and menus that change twice every term.Great value with a 3 course lunch for under 9 pounds and a 5 course dinner for 20 pounds. The students are from the 2nd.and 3rd. year of their course and although are still learning their skills are keen and efficient.Well worth trying !

I have eaten here a few times and always enjoy it. It's incredible value and the tutors do an excellent job of supervising and guiding the students (it's an education for diners too). Even if the food isn't always perfect, it's usually very good. It's a great midweek experience and I enjoy all the little extras-amuse bouches and aperitifs, silver service etc. The ambience is great and the wine menu (including some lovely dessert wines) is really excellent. I am always moved by the students and their efforts and I rather enjoy playing a small part in their professional development. It's also fun giving some constructive feedback at the end of the evening. I will endeavour to return ASAP!

Our party of four had a three course lunch. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and was well supported by visitors. The menu has a choice of three starters, three main courses and three desserts followed by tea/coffee. Included in the choices were vegetarian options. Two courses cost £7.95 and three courses £8.95. The food was delicious and well presented. The students looked very smart in their uniforms and carried out their duties in a professional manner. Highly recommended.

If the students operating this are planning a career in the catering industry, then a lot of restaurants have some good staff coming their way.The food was absolutely first class, with really nice presentation. I had a minestrone soup with bacon dumplings which was the best I have ever had. My main, of an Open Vegetable Lasagne, was a bit of a worry for me, being very much an experiment for this meat-lover. It was an experiment I did not regret, and though the portion size was good, I would gladly have eaten much more. The dessert of Gooseberry Fool topped with Chocolate Mousse maintained the standard, with the presentation in a wide glass particularly nice. The waiting staff were also very good, with friendly service that made me feel right at home. Even when some were being taught the finer points of such things as opening and pouring wine at the table, this was not intrusive.I now know why everyone who has come here recommends it. I also know why they recommend booking in advance as well.

This was my first dining experience at Coast Restaurant. The menu had some great choices and my server was very knowledgable about all of the dishes that was available, including the special of the day. I can only say that the food was of an excellent standard. What made my first experience truely memorable were the friendly students, ambience, decor and fabulous prices. Coast in my opinion is one of the best dining experiences in Hastings. A big thank you to you all.

This is an incomparable, little gem of a restaurant . Top quality, interesting and imaginative dishes all created by a very talented chef using locally sourced produce makes it difficult to decide what you would like! Memorable experience for someone who is coeliac too. Good sized portions and amazing choice = excellent value for money. Don’t forget to try the Appasiomento wine - a true find. Front of house service is relaxed, faultless and friendly making the overall experience excellent. We always pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Great selection of games, staff are fab and so helpful and accommodating (also very funny, we laughed all night). We paid corkage which was very cheap and brought a few drinks to enjoy with us. Great value for money, really unique happy spot in Hastings, can’t wait to go back !

Love it here. Great food options, amazing coffee- wonderful staff. Light airy with big windows to people watch- which is perfect as it is right in the heart of the old town. Also have been here for gigs, events and its always a great vibe.

I would have taken a photo before I ate most of it, but the brownies here are stuffed with chocolate but somehow aren't sickly sweet! The selection of hot chocolate is amazing, and my mum informed me that the lattes are great! Definitely worth a drop-in.
