Lovely food, service and premises. Clean loo and friendly staff. No brainer.

Saw skate on the menu and haven't had it for a few years. Was lovely and fresh, a decent portion with nice chips served very hot and was salivating waiting for it to cool down a bit before eating.

I was very disappointed with my order. The chips were dry and not very hot. The spring roll was not nice. I asked for a curry roll but there was only one left, so I had the veg roll. I was not offered to wait for one to cook. I will go back to the one in Knightsfield. The owner was misrable but thr you g lady and young man lovely.

This was the worst chips I have ever had to date. They were old, pock marked, shivelled, and tasted like the cooking oil was excessively old and burnt. Straight in the bin!! Waste of money and not worth going back there, EVER!!

Genuinely a very clean and tidy shop, the chips they have is banging! Served by the young man at the tills!

Popped in here for supper while working in the area, had a sit down meal of large cod and chips with garden peas, and it must be said that it was great 👌

Very rude man serving me for a small portion of chips open to take out.I have experienced him before serving me.It was so disorganised and lack of communication between staff.I will not be popping in there ever again as its uncomfortable.This server needs to exhibit good customer care and I feel there prices have gone up which is understandable in this Cost Of Living Crisis,however they serve less in the portion sizes.I was in at lunchtime today and the chips were half cold and bitty end small bits...really unpleasant and I had a few raw chips in the cone aswell not cooked through properly.Very Disappointing.

Looking for somewhere for lunch, we decide to give this place a try. It looked quite busy inside, and the food looked tasty. A nice welcome as we walked in, and very prompt service. A lot more that fish & chips on offer. I had the cod and chips, which was nicely cooked and tasted very nice (decent chips as well) My wife decided on a cheese burger, which was much better than a lot that we have had elsewhere. She really enjoyed it. Plenty of room on and between tables. Clean toilets, with everything working. Well worth another visit when we are next in WGC.

We hadn't been here for a while and one very tired Friday evening went in for a sit down meal. We had to wait for our fish to be cooked fresh (great) and each item were ordered arrived at the table separately (funny, but ok). The fish was lovely and fresh, nice batter - not greasy. Chips looked a bit pale, but were good and crispy. Pickle onion had it's own little dish and had been quartered, mushy peas were in their own little pot too and were good. All washed down with an Efes and a glass of house wine, we both enjoyed a little treat. Loos at the back were clean and all the staff were happy, friendly and efficient.

I've always walked past this chip shop as being in town I'd had just eaten so no need to order..but the subtle aromas from the shop always gave me the memory of childhood holidays..eating fish n chips on the beach....well one day it was lovely and sunny.. I had my granddaughter with me and we'd been in town for some time..we both walked towards the chip shop and both decided well get some chips!! Well I just wanted a small portion...yep granddaughter wanted large! Well we was met by a smile and a VERY CLEAN..WELL organised shop...there's ample tables where you can eat on the premises too...everything was laid out ready..like an invite to someone's home for dinner We decided to take out. Well the chips were cooked to perfection. And even a small portion was a good size! My favourite vinegar was there .....pickled onion..really made my day..as we walked out...the sun on us...dipping into our hot chips..my memories came back of walking down at the seaside..amazing what senses can awKen when you get the perfect bag of chips!!

Loved! Been to this place a few times and it is improving. This time and last time I really enjoyed the chips. Chunky chips, not overly crunchy and very fresh oil. That’s the main thing, they taste good.The fish looked rather oily but I will try another time. Keep up the good work.

Just had the misfortune to call in here for tea with my family. A very elderly gentleman, who also happened to be on crutches and struggling to walk, came and sat near to us. It was absolutely freezing outside and the dear gentleman was visibly freezing. When the man (owner?) came over to take his order, he said in a very hushed voice, clearly hoping we wouldn’t hear, that he was only allowed a takeaway- he wasn’t allowed to eat inside. He then made him go to the counter- wouldn’t even let him place his order and pay from his seat. The man (owner?)then instructed one of the staff to go and spray the area where he had been sitting with disinfectant. I am appalled.

Not cod not fresh very sad and very over priced! Drinks were very very expensive as food too 8.50 small cod &stale; chips already sat cooked before entering the shop! Watress sold only cod as haddock would take 15min well you normally wait for that amount of time in a real chippy!

Sat in restuarant. Ordered large cod on its own and one cod and chips. Both meals had already been cooked so came straight away. Charged £8.50 for a limp piece of fish purporting to be cod. Batter was soggy and clearly not fresh. Small bottle of water cost £1.90. Cod and chips £9.50. Dreadfully overpriced. Tables crammed in together. Unpleasant experience.

I found my battered sausage to be very tasty. The chips were good too, but stuck to the paper more than I'd like.

Been here before and it wasn't so nice I must admit, the chips were bitterly dry and fish over oily.

My friend and I always come here when we go shopping in Welwyn. The staff are always welcoming. The fish and chips are delicious. Large portions. Piping hot. Excellent value for money.

Love this chippy, just a shame they don't offer gluten free so my daughter could have some too, even one night a week would be great!

La bienvenida fue cálida y la comida estaba preparado a pedido. Su lema "si se puede encontrar el pescado más fresco que servimos, entonces aún nadando en el mar" parece apropiado. El pescado era fresco y sabroso, y las patatas fritas eran "pescado y patatas chips! El personal era atento y rápido. Nuestra única preocupación era el costo de las bebidas. Una lata de refresco fue £1. 90, que me parece elevado si se considera que se puede comprar en el supermercado a 13 latas por £2. 50. Sí, sabemos que tienen cabeza pero todavía parece mucho. Así, los precios de las bebidas aparte, sin duda recomiendo pescado y patatas y volveremos la próxima vez que esté en la ciudad.

Buen servicio amable y servicial, seguido por el mejor pescado y patatas fritas que he probado en años. Normalmente dejaría el bateador, pero en el caso de este establecimiento me comí todos los desechos. Totalmente recomendado! El personal del restaurante era muy complaciente que trajo una silla de ruedas en el restaurante.

Having been here for the first time with work colleagues I have subsequently eaten in the shop and had takeaway and it has been consistently good food and decent portion sizes.

The Promise is fresh fish and chips and cooked to order!Well On entering I found the place clean and welcoming and the two staff I met polite. I ordered a tea and medium fish and chips with a curry sauce.The tea arrived first which was really very nice and tasted better than a lot of places I have visited.However before I had chance to drink it my meal arrived very quickly afterwards. Not that I was complaining but just surprised at the speed of fresh fish cooked to order. I noticed straight away that it had come out of the display cabinet and from the look of the batter which was not fresh and the dryness it had definately been sat in there for some time. The fish was piping hot and due to being sat inside the cabinet and not from the fryer making it difficult to eat. So dryed out batter and fish due to the cealed moisture scolding hot.The chips likewise were not fresh and were in fact dry. Thankfully the curry sauce was OK and when poured on the chips gave moisture.I noticed that there was quite a few portions of battered fish in the cabinet still and must of been there for some time before I had arrived including my own. After sitting there for 30 minutes a customer arrived for a takeaway spending over £30 and the fish that he ordered also came out of the cabinet! Still not cooked to order! I can not say it was all bad so I give this place an average mark. However lessons they should learn.1. When showing photos of happy customers eating food like above and giving excellent reviews they need to be honest to Trip Adviser and customers as the husband and wife in the photos served me today. 2. When they say fresh food cooked to order it should be just that.They need to turn themselves around and to offer customers what they promise. I will visit again in February and see if they deserve a good or excellent.

This is a typical fish and chip shop/ restaurant. The fish was really fresh and tasty plus we added mushy peas and a sliced gherkin.I had haddock and my wife had rock. Freshly cooked for us not from the hot cabinet-it was excellent. We've been there many times for lunch and it's always very good food and friendly service.Cooked while you wait takes a bit longer but it's worth the wait.It's not posh but it's excellent. Well worth a visit if you're in the town.

We had a very nice fish and chip lunch at this fish bar. We've been several times before and it's always been a bit special. The staff are friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable.All nice and clean.

Real shame. We have ordered from this takeaway before with great food. This time the oil it was cooked in made everyone feel queezy an hour or so after eating. A refund would be appreciated as our evening was ruined.

The food arrived within 25 mins and the food was good quality and still hot, gravy sauce still piping hot and the soft drink still chilled. Only downside is that my children despite having eaten already...also loved the food and nicked most of my chips and gravy sauce. Very pleased.

The usual standard has slipped, the battery seemed to be old and very dark in places and the chips were not as fresh as they have been before. Really disappointed.

We went there just for fish and chips and a cup of tea and the bill came to over £35 for 2 adults and a child. Wouldn't mind so much but they were average fish and chips at best. Then we were told we couldn't pay by card. Don't know if this was because the machine was broke or they don't expect them. If this the case they need to rethink there prices as most people pay by card for those prices. Won't be going again.

This was by far one of the worst potions of fish & chips I have ever had the misfortune of gulping. The Coca-Cola was probably the best out of the fish, chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce, ketchup, salt and vinegar. They should probably price a meal at £4.99, because that is what the food deserves. By the way, the fish is not fresh!

We ordered Plaice but it was sadly sold out however, they called us and let us change our order to Cod or Haddock and were very friendly. The food came on time and they even gave an entire extra Cod for the inconvenience. Definitely would recommend this place, the gravy was good and the chips as well.

Service was good but the scampi was soggy all in all pretty bland the chips were just cooked no crunchiness to the chip what so ever slightly emotional as I do love a good chip.

The food arrived fast, but the fish was far too oily (dripping!) the chips were almost white (a generous portion though) The onion rings were soggy and cold. It wasn't worth the price I paid. Deffo won't order from here again.

My partner and I went here to get a takeaway fish and chips today as a treat to have outside in the sunshine. We ordered a small cod and chips each and a mushy peas to share. First of all, they only do medium and large - bit cheeky really. Anyway, 2 medium cod and chips and 1 mushy peas came to £17!!!! We had intended on a cheap lunch! When we questioned it, she was very rude and said the cod was £5.90 a piece and chips were £2 each!!! Absolute rip off. To top it off, it wasn't even nice. Really greasy and salty. We will certainly not be going back at all.

I ordered a large fish and chips. I had to wait 25 minutes !!! They waited until there was four orders before the started to cook mine. They was so rude and unhelpful and had no sorry for long wait and curry sauce was horrible as well. Never going go in there again!!!! And the fish was very sloppy and batter pretty rubbish . People preparing food on mobile phone, then sneezing into hand, no washing, poor service and trying to make money out of you rather than providing a service. Not clean, fish did not taste of fish. Never again and will share this with all I know.

We picked up a take away this evening as just back from holiday. The fish was excellent and the chips were perfect. I only buy fish and chips 5 or 6 times a year but these were the best I've eaten in years.

give it a miss, went in for lunch, ordered take away sausage and chips with curry sauce,Got home, chips were OK, no sausage and watery curry sauce, cost me £5.00 great! How can you get something so basic wrong, and by the looks of it the curry sauce is mixed up on demand from a powered microwaved and is watery. Disappointing

Great food, hot and quick. We were not sure if they would have skate owing to the season but ordered anyway and received a call within 10 mins to let us know that there was no Skate available but there was a nice big Plaice we could have instead at no additional cost. Brilliant service!
