Civic Hall in County Durham

We haven’t been for years. Very surprised, didn’t expect meal being so delicious. Cod n chips was out of this world, scampi was delicious. Drinks were very reasonably priced, staff very friendly. Definitely coming back soon.

Went here for ladies day yesterday and yet again they absolutely nailed it! The place was jam packed and the pressure was well and truly on but the staff remained polite and courteous through out. The food was absolutely beautiful, I really can not rate this place enough!

Went for a family meal for a birthday, I ordered a chicken Parma, I was surprised of how big it was for the money. It tasted great and didn’t cost an arm an a leg

Me and my partner called here as a last minute plan, the whole place has had a makeover giving it a fresh clean feel. We were greeted by a staff member as soon as we entered and once our booking was confirmed we were shown to our table. The staff were very friendly and polite and drinks were ordered and brought over really quickly! The food was absolutely beautiful both the starter and the main. We will definitely be visiting more often. I can’t recommend it enough

We were not made to feel welcome , service not up to their standard, been here loads of times but portions are not up to the same standard. , even though you were getting it discount you expect the same portions

Regular visitor to civic for food over the years and always found food to be good and value for money. Visited here mid week told new manager in charge. This was obvious as meals were a joke. Got prawn salad. Salad consisted of some chopped lettuce and nothing else. This does not constitute a salad in my mind. Portion of prawns particularly small for a main meal acceptable for a starter bout not a main. Other meal ordered braised steak slice of steak overcooked round the edges. Quantity of food compared to previous visits a lot less. If this is the standard under the new management then afraid business will suffer. Won't be back unfortunately and sorry for this as always liked the civic for food ☹️

Sorry I have no photos of food, food does looks good but taste there’s non at all, this hall/restaurant is awful, my son could do better & he’s 18, ordered fajitas only two pieces of chicken so I complained, had to wait 5mins later a full bowl of chicken well that makes me wonder why only 5 mins. Will not be going back.

We went with some of our association friends for a 3 course evening meal, we were not disappointed, there were a few choices of each course. Everyone was pleased with their meals. The general consensus of opinion from all members is that we would like to return for further functions in the future. There is a good selection of draught beers and lagers. There is ample parking in the adjacent car park, the staff were very helpful and the meals we all presented quickly between courses. Will definitely visit again.

I have been before and it wasn't too bad only really bad thing was the high chair was really dirty. Went again and it was terrible. We were the first group to arrive ( table booked for 6pm) as we were early. We were seated and I had to go look for someone to get me a highchair for the baby. The high chair tray was so unclean I had to take it back to we washed as it was thick with old dried in food. When the waitress retired it I still had to wipe it over with a baby wipes as it was completely clean. At around 6.15 they took our orders and we waited a while and the starters came. We then waited and waited for the mains, but they didn't come. While we were waiting I noticed all the other table which arrived after us were already eating the mains and some were ordering desserts. I asked a waitress where our mains were, she didn't get back to me so asked another and she didn't come back either. I then had to got to the bar and complain. I wouldn't have minded but there were young children and a baby with us who were getting really hungry. Our mains finally started to come out but only brought 2 of the children's then started bringing it the adults I again had to ask for the baby's food. WE WAITED 1.30 mins for our food to come out. The food was then mixed up and people given the wrong steaks. we didn't have time to wait ages again for new food to be cooked. There was no service at all they literally just put the food on the table and were never seen again. Terrible service!!! And very unhygienic would not give my dog the tray they gave my daughter to eat off!!! It was my poor sister birthday and was ruined by slow service which meant she didn't have time to do her birthday cake

A nice place for a quiet meal with friends, as it was not too busy. The food was enough, hot and tasty, and the service was good. The bar was also good and not expensive. It was not to busy that night and so gave us the opportunity to have a nice conversation.

lovelt place, on a sunday 2 sittings, and very busy, but staff are veryquick with fresh tasty food. sunday lunch is excellent and good value

Reasonable meal, had sweet chilli dish, rather too spicy to previous time I had it. Menu too extensive takes an age to decide, would be better with a smaller menu but with better quality.

Can't fall off if you fancy a steak! Nice relaxed atmosphere, bar area nicely done out with leather couches. Great place to relax with a drink after our meal.

Visit here quite often, food is lovely and good portions, always good service, Enjoy it so much I've booked my wedding reception here 😍

Been going to Civic now for quite a while and have always enjoyed the food . Called in last night after flying back from Spain , my partner always has the steak pie and I decided on a rump steak . My partner is a good cook so knows her stuff . She noticed the pie wasn't the same and thinks it's being bought in . The meat was terrible vegetables bland and gravy not the same standard as it was . My steak was chewy and the salad terrible . We are both disappointed and wonder if the original cook has left

Had hot buffet. Plenty of choice. But chicken was cold. One of our party as dairy allergy and wouldn't supply anything else for pud other than gateau . Great entertainment venue. Cheap drinks

Nice food and lovely location. Is located central within Bishop Auckland, not too far from the castle.

Well worth a visit. Good choice of foods (the lamb was the tastiest I have had this year) with very pleasant and fast service. Everything you want in an eating place

Comida de pub a un precio razonable en un entorno agradable. Ciertamente no fino, así que probablemente no atraerá a los sibaritas pero bueno, casero, platos de buen tamaño de la porción. Las bebidas son un poco caras pero eso es de esperar. También celebrar noches banda que son realmente buenas. Sin duda merece la pena una visita.

I've eaten at the Civic Hall so many times too many to remember and I've always had a lovely meal cooked as required Service and staff are very pleasant Would definitely recommend and the prices are very reasonable

Sunday lunches are lovely good choice of meats and very nice sweets. Meals during week Monday to Thursday inclusive buy one get one free cheapest one free good selection of meals need to book.

Came here on a monday night for my boyfriends 30th. Id dropped balloons and a cake off earlier that day,when we arrived got drinks at the bar and had 5 minutes in the bar/lounge area then went through to the restaurant were our table was set up nicely with the balloons. Most of us had startwrs and everyone enjed them. I had potato skins they were delicious and it wasnt an over sized portion for main I had the lasagne again thoroughly enjed it. A few people had desserts and then our cake was brought out. Good night all around and very reasonable prices

Love the civic. Went downhill when the chef left but getting back up there. Food huge and best value for miles around. Highly recommend and disability friendly. All on one level x

We go here often..as a date night and we are never dissapointed... even the avents they do and food is available its really nice food and great service

birthday dinner bit very disappointed ,the fish was over cooked ,no flavour ,chips not to bad ,was quite so expected better

When trying to think of somewhere local to the family to go for Sunday lunch, you do not need to go much further than The Civic Hall in Shildon. The place has been open for years and has gone through a few refurbishments in my time but it's always remained a cute and cheap little place to eat. The menu is simple but that's sometimes a good thing and it has firm favourites like gammon and chips etc through the week so it's great anytime, not just for Sunday lunch. The portion sizes are good and you certainly get your monies worth. The drinks are a little on the expensive side but when you're not paying much for the food, then it's not as much of a concern.

Pre-booked a table for eleven people to be seated by 7.30pm latest, got sat down at 7.50 pm, another party of approx 30 people were also sat waiting for food, food order was taken at 8.10, just as the other party was been served, waited nearly 40 minutes for the meal as only one waitress was working - very poor attitude of staff and service

One of the best ways to express community is to share food together. Shildon Council is to be commended for its modern approach with this excellent restaurant, serving incredible roast lunches for 6 GBP, including magnificent yorkshire puds, generous helpings of veg and meats, and a sauce boat of gravy for each person. Wine and beer available at low price as well. Dinner every evening, and also roast lunches (3 sittings!) at the weekend.
