City Tavern in Cheshire West and Chester

Have been here many many times. Probably 3 times per month during the summer. Won't go back. Ordered chicken thigh carsar salad. Chicken thighs instead of breasts. Not the portion that usually comes. Bland, uninteresting. Mainly limp lettuce and bit of dressing. Anchovies tasted stale. Chicken thighs looked like bacon and tasted unpleasant. Tool the dish to the counter to ask was this bacon or chicken. Reply came back. They are Chicken thighs! No offer to change anything.. overall Honestly they were stringy and there was defo no parmesan cheese. Croutons were just bits of stale bread that had gone soft overall a very disappointing experience. My friend had chicken burger, which is what she usually has. She didn't eat most if it and agreed thar the food was not up to the usual standard. It's a shame as it's really handy for the bus stand but unfortunately I won't be giving them a other chance.

Katie was excellent, answer everything she was extremely pleasant and friendly. The food was perfectly prepared, sausage and mash was tasty and full of flavour. Fish and chip really hit the spot, superb chips and tartar were delicious, perfectly cooked chips Pleasant friendly atmosphere Nothing was to much trouble Highly recommended

We come here whenever we are in Chester, sometimes breakfast sometimes lunch. This time it was lunch and how disappointing, don’t get me wrong the food was good but smaller portions by changing the menu🤷‍♂️. No gammon or mixed grill on the menu, we had hunters chicken but even this is laid out to hide portion size. Will use again to see what the breakfast menu is like but from now on it’s else where for lunch. I don’t mind paying but to remove traditional meals from the menu is sad. Hope you keep your customers

An early evening meal with family on a short visit to Chester. We had, collectively, Burger, Pie, and Hunters Chicken. Simple choices but very well prepared and presented. Excellent value. The Cask beer is well kept. I suspect it may be very busy on a Sports Night, but for us it was sufficiently relaxed. Definitely recommended.

If there's one pub I know I'm going to visit on any trip to Chester I take its The City Tavern, been here before on many occasions, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit to here. A great looking pub, interior is superb, set over two floors, dark wood features abound throughout this pub, a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room, lovely decor and furnishings and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub and all housed in a wonderful looking building, its just a really good pub to unwind in. My twin brother and I were here on a bitterly cold February afternoon, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, a quick study of their beer range which I must say I was impressed with, in the end we both opted to have a pale ale each from Weetwood Ales Brewery, these were served in excellent condition,we chilled out, warmed up and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub while we sipped our pale ale's. My pale ale was really good, a crisp, golden, well balanced pale ale, hints of toffee and a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a smooth finish, a classic British pale ale served in a classic British pub,it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew and served by staff who are genuinely pleased to see you in their pub and being sat with my twin brother, best beer companion in the world. We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to The City Tavern we had a great time. The City's Tavern is easy to locate along Fridsham Street. Opening hours are; Monday to Saturday, open from 9am. Sunday, open from 10am. A wonderful pub,one I highly recommend you seek out if you're in the area or planning a trip to Chester.

this a great spot for a bite to eat in chester town center, would recommend to people to come here, the food is always out at reasonable time and it is always hot, not had a bad meal here yet, the atmosphere is nice, very accessible to everyone - the app is easy to use.

Very good food of a original Pub and good prices, I recommend all have a day lunch in here and enjoy a music weekend in evening as well

Chicken tikka masala - nice curry, very little chicken, no chutney (advertised as with chutney), naan bread like nothing I've ever seen - thin and hard. Steak as tough as old boots and tiny, peppercorn sauce nice. Loos nice and clean. Pleasant service. I wouldn't dine here again. Would sooner starve. Very poor fayre.

Came here on a random weekday with the hubby had a wonderful meal. Hot and tasty. And the staff were wonderful, telling all about the lovely things they do during the week like games day and bingo and singers at the weekend. It's a pub that deserves a good following. Definitely coming back

Booked prior to coming, we used their balcony area for our Christmas party as there were 40 of us! The pub looks beautiful from outside and does not disappoint once you get inside, as soon as we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome and guided us to our booked area. We had a drinks package booked, it was all ready for us when we got there, and then the drinks just kept on coming, we had a private DJ for our party. We pre paid so everything went so smoothly and getting served at the bar was effortless considering how busy they were. We will definitely be going back as the prices were very reasonable for a city center pub! Thank you City Tavern for a wonderful evening, we will be back 😊

Can't resist this place when shopping in the area (Tesco's mainly). Food is excellent - especially when washed down with a Pims Number One! We usually have the sharing platter, but there's a great menu to choose from. Since writing the above, they've changed the menu. Still okay, but they've removed our favorite sharer.

This is a nice place with a good menu selection and the very helpful and friendly staff will make sure you have a nice time.It is will situated and a 2min walk from the city centre,so if you need a wee break from shopping pop in for a drink and a bite to eat

Service was quick and did the job. Saturday afternoon, racing on, sport on other TVs if that's your pub set up it's perfect for it!

Stopped in for a lovely relaxing lunch and a pint. Gorgeous fish n chips and steak and ale pie. Kids loved it. Definitely recommend a visit!

Bit peeved, been coming to this place for years. For the last year we've been paying £12 odd for an 8oz steak which is always, just perfect. However, went in last week, chose our £12 steaks as per and we were served this tiny little sad looking steak. Apparently now the 5oz steak is £12 odd and the 8oz is higher in price now. Why? Its the same cut of beef served the same way.....whys it gone up? And now u only get half of the peppercorn sauce they used to give u. Upping the prices but lowering the food 🤔 It's a shame because we do like this place

Came here for the England game, the atmosphere was decent! The app seemed to be very well managed, the lady on it did not seem to stop, never waited too long for the drinks to arrive. It would have been a higher rating but a very disinterested, tall male brought out our food, didn’t look like he wanted to be there and never bothered coming back to clear our table and take away the plates, leaving our table cluttered for most of the game

Just returned from a 3 week stay in chester and the city tavern is always our go to pub we stay quite a lot in chester and always make a beeline for this pub the staff are always polite and serve with a smile and the atmosphere is always good so if you are looking for a decent pub/restaurant in chester head to here you really can't go wrong.

Had such a great day at the city tavern, amazing staff all smiling and a wonderful beer garden. Would 100% recommend.

This pub is great for food and drink, friendly and efficient bar staff. The food is excellent. My friends and I came in tonight to watch the football, they have multiple TV screens. Scarlet was behind the bar tonight, she is a bubbly, friendly and efficient member of staff, nothing was too much trouble for. I would highly recommend this pub.

I visit the city tavern chester as a regular customer, and I am always welcomed with a smile and great service and Scarlett is always there with her bubbly personality.

Reasonably priced food ,quick friendly service

We came across this lovely pub on a night away in chester. We were spoilt for choice as the menu had plenty of options. When ordering the food and drinks the staff were lovely and couldn't have helped us anymore. As I have dietary requirements I had to change a few things but this wasn't a problem atall. The food came within no time, piping hot and was absolutely gorgeous. Will definately return on our next trip to Chester.

Found that the service from a male waiter was a bit ignorant and self important. Not very polite and just dropped off the condiment boxes as If he couldn't be bothered. A poor attitude in my opinion. Otherwise the food was average pub food but that was expected really.

Visited the City Tavern yesterday, 11 family members, we all had a hot meal which was lovely, chips were great and the gammon steak lovely. Service was first class, all meals arrived at the same time, no one was left waiting, quite an achievement for a large group. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will certainly visit again, also great as dog friendly, as we had our small dog with us. We'll done to everyone from Naomi, bar staff and kitchen staff.
