Cibo in Cardiff

Visited Cibo last year for lunch and while there was space at the restaurant, we were denied a table as my son was too young for a highchair and they apparently had "no room" for our pram (even with several empty tables). Shame as I've eaten at Cibo in the past and the food is generally good, but they clearly don't want my business any more.

This was a great, family-run restaurant but the owner has retired and the place has been gutted by builders. It will re-open, under new management, as a bistro.

Had a lovely meal here with our lad. We all had different pasta dishes and they were fantastic washed down with cider and house wine. Just right for us.

We wandered down, close to home so we've been before but... tonight we found the rear garden! What a gem. The food is always good,staff lovely, but we have never really fancied sitting out front in the evening. The rear garden is a total delight intimate, private and very comfortable ... highly recommended, though part of me would like to stay quiet. The thought of not getting a table is rather upsetting!

My first visit to Cibo. Lovely looking place, cute garden area out the back for dining if you are lucky or reserve, but for the price the food is distinctly average. I had a pizza, my partner had a pasta dish. Both were a bit dull to be honest, lacking the sparkle you might expect for approaching £12 per plate. What really rankled on paying our bill, was spotting bowls of parmesan 'hidden' behind the counter. It might have improved our meals slightly and is a usual ritual in any Italian diner, but we weren't offered any. The waitress actually admittedthey don't offer it, but only provide if the customer asks. "we are only a small business" I quote. This is really mean-spirited I think. No restaurant would last 5 minutes in Italy with such an attitude to its customers

Had the only bad experience I've ever had in a restaurant here. I'm pretty easy going so never felt the need to review a place before. I was shocked at my awful food and bad service. Only go here if u want a cheap pizza.

always a delight to eat hear but make sure you book as it is only a small place and always busy. Service and surroundings very comfortable with smooth atmosphere.

Decided to celebrate my husband 60th birthday in Cibo as we all love Italian food and its close to my daughter in Pontcanna and my son travelling from Bristol. Despite informing them on booking we were celebrating a birthday there was no acknowledgement of the occasion what so ever! Not even a free coffee!! Never again! The food wasn't very good either!!!

Ordered a Bolognese and a Tiramisu, portions where a joke, bolognese stank, took one bite and threw it away. 11 pounds for overcooked mushy pasta with a bad smelling beef sauce that in NO WAY is a bolognese. If this is an italian restaurant, I am a martian. Tiramisu was 2 bites (I kid you not) and came in the smallest plastic container you've ever seen.

Years ago, I used to live opposite this restaurant so ate there or got takeaway fairly regularly, and have returned on a number of occasions when visiting Cardiff. Every time I leave very pleased as the food is first rate. Every option, whether pizza, pasta, fish, steak or anything else, is always delicious.

Cibo is one of those restaurants that, once you've been, you'll never forget. From outside, it looks pretty, step inside and you get that warm Italian welcome. The menu is fantastic, with a range of pizzas, pastas, meats and fish. But it's the calzone in the special menu that the highlight. I've had loads of calzones and most are disappointing. They usually look full on the plate but when I cut in, they're full of air. Not at Cibo. Their calzone is jam packed with tasty, spicy, fresh filling. Wine. I like my wines but, sadly, know nothing about Italian wines. The waitress advised the carafe of house red. At one litre it was the same price as bottled 750cl bottles. It was fantastic. A genuine find. I cannot fault Cibo in any way. It's right up there on my list of favourite restaurants. If you're looking for an intimate setting, with great service and perfect food and wine, you have to try Cibo.

Just home from the most happy Italian Christmas dinner, 6 adults tiny baby. Could not ask for friendlier service. Food was of a high standard, but the welcome and service was exceptional, booked for 6.30 because of baby who was wonderful until the last 10mins, but staff and other diners perfect. Lovely to go to a family friendly restaurant that serves excellent food

Have been here quite often and every time the service and food is exceptional. Located just outside the City center in a trendy part of the city near Pontcanna Park. Several good restaurants in this area and most are really good. Cibo doesnt look that welcoming when you come in just because its basically a dark wood interior with a bar taking up a relatively large area. Dont let this fool you - the service is attentive without being intrusive, which also makes it good as a place for business lunches and dinners. The typically Italian menu provides a nice mix of choices as well as specials at fairly reasonable prices. The food comes quickly and be prepared for large portions. Steaming hot food is rare in a restaurant these days - but not here. On this visit, three of us shared a hot fresh bead roll with olive oil dip. Followed by three different pasts dishes, all of which were delicious. Absolutely recommend Cibo - I very much doubt if you will be disappointed

Last night before baby comes out of hospital... decided to spend the evening enjoying the atmosphere of a cosy restaurant, which is why we chose Cibo; small compact, warm with a light buzz of conversations and laughter; a rare treat! Within 5 minutes all the tables were occupied; a small family group with children were having what looked like a party type celebration close by, with a wide range of other adults sharing the restaurant tables.

I loved this place!! We had an amazing dinner .... great place with high quality food!! Incredible freshness! Owners were there and the service was excellent. Thank you cibo! Amazing night The pasta mare-monte is the BEST BEST pasta we have ever had!!!!! Try it !

Our favourite place for our family gatherings. Always great service and always able to accommodate our party, whether it's large(14) or small.Food is great, plenty of choice and good choice of specials on the board. Whether it's a pasta dish or pizza, portions are generous and food is tasty.Look forward to our next visit. Best to make a reservation to avoid disappointment.

A great selection of food beautifully cooked and presented. We love returning to this welcoming restaurant when we return to Cardiff

I've visited here on a number of occasions for both an intimate meal and also for a business meeting and the venue works well for both.The food is outstanding as are the staff, a great asset to Pontcanna and I'll sure to be visiting again!

Four of us had an evening meal here, each choosing a different option and everyone being pleased. Two had starters - which were very generously sized - in fact, without asking, we were brought two extra plates so that we could share! A kind and generous gesture on the part of the restaurant! Deserts, too, were delicious. Too full for coffee, so cannot comment on that. All-in-all, a good experience and we would not hesitate to eat here again.

The food here has deteriorated. Pizza was bland and a bit cold. garlic pizza was also bland, hard and cold. Their wine list is terrible. will not return again.

Went with family for lunch with two teenagers.Food was tasty and portion sizes were good.The place was clean and neatly laid out.The interior is not large, there is an area to the rear of the property which i did not see, it is described as a secluded garden.The prices are a little over the average so not the place for somebody on a budget.They have a nice selection of alcoholic or soft drinks.We had a pleasant time and would go again.

We're been a few times to Cibo, and we've always been disappointed by the food, which is overpriced and not of great quality. The pizzas are small and thin, the pastas passable but chicken and chorizo is NOT any Italian recipe and the salads are greatly overpriced. Service is barely acceptable, but they tend to try and take your plate when you've still food on in. There are better and more genuine alternatives for Italian food in Cardiff than this overpriced and pretentious restaurant.

I have visited this restaurant twice in the past month. If you are happy with average service and disinterested staff then this is the restaurant for you. If you think that it is acceptable to have a bottle of Prosecco plonked on the table without a receptacle to keep it cool then come on down! If you want a waitress to argue with you when you complain about the quality of a meal then you are in the right place! I know what you are asking.... why did you go twice if it was so bad? The first visit was on a very busy evening and it appeared that the waitress was new.... I am happy to give an establishment the benefit of the doubt. However when I receive poor service in an empty restaurant and witness another family leave because the staff were so unhelpful about accommodating their pushchair then I feel compelled to speak out.

We liked the menu here we ate here twice. Fist time outside in the back porch with a lovely risotto and second time inside with a lovely pasta dish. The people are very friendly, the service is great, the food super tasty and we walked to the restaurant from out hotel.

Booked this restaurant for a meal on Saturday before a production at Cardiff open air theatre. Myself and my boyfriend do not usually eat in this area of Cardiff, so decided on Cibo by googling restaurants in the proximity of Sofia Gardens. We will most definitely be back! A lovely quant restaurant with lots of staff members to cope with a full restaurant on a busy Saturday. The starters seem expensive but the reason for this is that they are huge! We had the bruschetta tricolore and the special Italian sausage. We could have easily shared the bruschetta as it came with a whole mini ciabatta.... Main meals were also excellent very flavoursome and very hot in temperature - we both opted for pasta dishes, and my past experience with some restaurants is that the pasta can be luke warm and go cold very soon. We were very impressed with the food and drink on offer and will be back to maybe try a pizza next time (although now I know the pasta was so nice it may be a hard decision)!Will most certainly recommend this restaurant to our friends & family. Good value for money (£51 for 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 glasses of wine & 2 Peroni) and excellent service.

I haven't eaten at the cafe itself, but have ordered takeaway from here on several occasions.Each time it has arrived promptly, with no mistakes, and been absolutely delicious. I particularly recommend the spicy sausage starter.The website is a little frustrating to order from, as you have to reload the menu page every time you add an item, but an otherwise smooth experience.

Went with 5 friends to our favourite Italian, Cibo, in Pontcanna .The table was booked for 8.30 but I received a txt saying that they were running late but a bottle would be waiting for us as consolation . So far so good. We arrived around 8.45 and our table was ready. However we then waited almost an hour for our food and no complimentary bottle of wine appeared.3 of us ordered the special, vegetarian cannelloni with spinach and aubergine . The food was very poor and the three of us left most of it even though we were hungry by now. I thought a quiet word with the staff, away from other diners, but the response , which no one wants to hear was " well nobody else has complained ". We paid the bill, £126, no tip and left, never to return.

My partner and I ate here on Wednesday evening after work for a change. We didn't have reservations but they were able to seat us right away. A lovely waitress bought us the food and drinks menus.I ordered a glass of Pinot blush and my partner ordered a beer.For dinner I ordered carbonara and my partner a calzone with a side of wedges.Everything was absolutely gorgeous and there was so much. We managed to eat the whole lot and did not regret it. The bill was £35 which I think is really good for the quality of food and the portion size. We will definitely be back! Gorgeous!

The food is good. It is a little expensive ... it is good quality BUT..............After a tiring day we decided to eat here. I have eaten here in the evenings and I have also dropped in with my daughter around 5pm for a hot chocolate.Tonight the frosty faced waitress showed us to a table by the window.Fine.She gave us our menus...fine.I thought that paying over £8.00 for lasagne for a child was a little expensive but she told us we could take it away if there was some left over. Fine.We ordered Fine. She did not understand Italian..I ordered the pasta with salmon et al..fine.Smokers proceeded to go outside to smoke.The fumes were blowing in while we were eating...not so fine...the male waiter wedged the door open....ok I thought the smokers have gone in..thats the end of that.Carry on...the male waiter was courteous with my children when they ordered dessert.Fine.The smokers returned and so I asked my daughter to close the door as the smoke was horrible.The waitress immediately came through and wedged the door open. I then said that is ok if you are prepared to reduce my food bill because of the inconvenience of the smoke. I was angry!!!£58.50 later we paid the bill. Not a small bill to pay at tea time. Not a small bill to pay when you have two children to cover and when you work bloody hard for a living . But hay ho.It was a treat. I do not like surly waiting staff. I eat at many places especially Italian as they are always child friendly.But this one I am not so sure!!!I will never go there again and I suggest that if you do-please go in the late evening when the miserable is not there.

This is our local Italian restaurant and just a few minutes walk from our house. We are regular visitors and always enjoy a meal. The food is excellent and the service is very reliable.

This restaurant does not look very much from the outside, like a cafe, but you must try it. Authentic Italian Food and staff. Very good service and home cooked food. I had a warm chicken salad and it was beautiful.

Once again a great evening spent at Cibo. As always the service was great, good choice of items on the menu and the specials board.It's a lovely place for having a family meal, staff are lovely and happy to serve us at our pace as it's usually a very sociable family evening. We visit often and looking forward to our next visit.

Pizza Cibo, a little disappointed, was quite tough and hard to cut, was also suppose to be "hot Base" but wasn't spicy at all. However, credit to the Waitress for taking in what I said, I said the pizza will be shared between the two of us. The pizza came already cut in half. We were late to trying this restaurant, but have been bowled over about it since we 've been.We have a number pasta dishes and its difficult to say which one is best!Staff are always friendly and helpful, and great place to visit.

We come here often as it's very tasty authentic Italian meals at reasonable prices. Always leave very happy and satisfied but for some reason we've never had desert.Ordered the tiramisu and found they weren't home made! They plonk the "manufactured" tiramisu in its plastic cup into a bowl! I was gutted, might as well have paid £5 for 3 magnums in the off-licence next door! On the other hand the pizzas we had were really tasty as always, and decent house wine!

The four of us were booked in for 8pm, all craving some Italian eats.My partner and I shared a Caprese starter, which was rather delicious! As a main, I ordered Spaghetti Puttanesca and my partner, the Spaghetti Carbonara.Both dishes were very flavourful and tasty!All was washed down with a lovely Merlot.The atmosphere was comfortable and cosy, and the service was very personal and attentive. It really made for a wonderful evening out!

Although we visited in the evening my mum had a smaller "lunch"portion of pasta for her main course which she appreciated. My daughter and I both had pizza which were excellent. Phoned and asked for a table for Valentines night , was offered a table for 8.30.... great we thought , I have eaten here lunchtimes and its been pleasant . Got to the restaurant 5 minutes late,attentive staff ( I did not know the reason at this point ) ordered our food and a carafe of wine, first course fine but within seconds of our starter plates being removed our main course was placed on the table, with no time to let the first course digest, it immediately felt rushed, as soon as we had finished our mains the plates were whisked away and we were asked if we wanted coffee this was at approx. 9.15,a mere 40 minutes after we arrived,my husband said can we wait until we have finished the wine? at 9.30 ( which was some going for a litre of wine but we felt under pressure ) asked for a coffee and were told at this point the coffee machine had been turned off! I asked what time the restaurant closed and was told it was 9 o clock but they were staying open a little later as it was Valentines night ......the website advertises 10pm, you have to ask why if they close at 9 were we booked at 8.30pm a quick grab at some extra money ? because that's how it felt, we left at 9.58 with tables cleared and waiting staff on the blocks to leave. Never again will I eat here ..over priced mediocre food. Living off the " Pontcanna " name as are most of the restaurants in that area. If you want to close at 10 don't book someone in at 8.30 I was not expecting fast food. Ruined our Valentines night.

Loved Cibo today! My first visit. Food was gorgeous..hot, delicious and plenty of it with garlic bread to die for. Comfortable, relaxed setting - with attentive friendly staff. Will definitely be returning.

A very good choice of dishes on the menu which were all reasonably priced. The house wine was excellent value. Food was well presented and portions were very generous. This is a very friendly family run establishment, well worth a visit.

First of all, if you want to eat somewhere with cheesy Italian music blaring out of tinny speakers that serves watery slop then this isn't the place for you.The atmosphere is really relaxed, it's quiet enough for you to have a nice conversation over food without having to shout. A nice intimate setting.The quality of the food is always consistent and full of flavour, really rich and made with real ingredients, nothing from a jar.Well worth a visit if you are in this neck of the woods.

I love everything about this restaurant. The food is amazing and made fresh (no powder mix sauces here!), the staff are always friendly and efficient and the dining area is small but perfectly formed with flattering lighting and lots of mirrors. We come here for family meals and romantic meals and they cater for both beautifully. I love their Calzone and Penne Al Cibo (I think that's how you spell it). Highly recommend and often do x

My husband and I just arrived this afternoon and we did not want to walk very far in the rain on our first night in Cardiff. We stayed at lovely Lincoln House on Cathedral Rd. where they recommended this near by restaurant. We ordered the specials which were delicious. The house red wine was a perfect accompaniment. We'd highly recommend this neighborhood gem to other travelers,

From the outside its looks welcoming and inside is ok to, but the food was poor. My starter was dripping in oil and my main had no flavor. Staff were difficult to grab for a drink. Within in seconds of taking our starter plate away our main arrive some what cold... think thy had been waiting for us to finish. Won't be going back disappointed in the experience as it looked promising and seams to be always full. Perhaps its just us who had a bad meal.

Visted here in the evening mid week. It was quite busy seated close to the door. I have rated a three as the meal was tasty we had pasta rome with chicken peices on top of penne in a rich tomato sauce. Did not have dessert as menu was very limited. It was fair value for money was just lacking a bit in friendly atmosphere and although it was hot and pretty quick service it did not stand out in the taste department from the run of the mill

booked by phone, but when we arrived were directed to a table by the door, very close to another couple. We asked for another table and were told "that one over there" by a pile of chairs. Waitress took our food order, and had to be reminded that she had not taken our drinks order. Pizzas arrived and were flooded with chilli oil, and I had to soak the excess with a serviette! Service was poor, no smiles, we felt unwelcome. Will not go there again. Very disapponting, for £34 plus.

So Iv seen many good reviews and maybe the restaurant is better than delivery, however my pizza was cold, soggy and bland (I didn't finish it) the garlic bread wasn't great, the calzone was much better but all in all very disappointed. Had a meal for two Saturday before we headed off to theatre, booked for 5pm, lovely and quiet, fast friendly service, delicious hot food, want to come back every week to try everything on the menu. We had Vegetable Penne al Forno and Carbonara, with the Bruschetta Tricolore to start, could not fault it.

Order 40mins late. 15 mins after scheduled delivery time i rang up and was told my order left 5mins ago, i am 2mins from you restaurant? Pizzas burnt and extremely cold. Very very disappointed. I know its bank holiday weekend, but you shouldnt let your standards slip.

One of my favourite restaurants in Cardiff! Dined here for my birthday with a large group (16) & experience was absolutely faultless from start to finish. Friendly service and delicious, authentic Italian food. Everyone commented on how nice their meal was, and that they were really impressed with the place.
