I’m truly appalled by the experience my friend had at this restaurant. Spilling wine on a customer’s jacket is already a serious mishap, but the condition of taking the jacket in exchange for compensation is completely disrespectful and unprofessional. A genuine apology and a more thoughtful resolution would have been the right approach to fix the mistake, but this kind of behavior only reflects poorly on the management. The additional issues with hygiene and poor handling of customer needs only add to the disappointment. Restaurants should prioritize respect and care for their customers, but sadly, that wasn’t the case here. I hope the management takes serious steps to improve how they treat their patrons.

The worst restaurant I have ever been to. The owner was present there and was serving drinks and manager was taking food order. Both were disrespectful and humiliating the customers and never bothered about customer needs. This is not just indian cuisine based restaurant, it's a mixture of Bangladeshi seafood and indian cuisine with incorrect spelling for dishes in menu. Hygiene was never a factor there, dishwashing place was next to a table and spilling all drinks and water on the table. They are so rude with the customers and doesn't know the way to handle people. Never ever recommend this restaurant to anyone even to have a quick bite! Disgusting people and atmosphere!

Excellent food and service. However, the place is a little run down and in need of renovations. Staff could also dress better and lose the hoodie and maybe wear a white/black shirt at least? I was torn between a 3 & 4 star but as the food was genuinely delicious and staff accommodating, I had to round up!

Came here and was greeted with kindness from staff all around. The food here is seriously good, and with good portion sizes too.

The ambience is just like road side , rates equal or more than many Indian restaurants in Oxford which are far better . All chicken dishes taste same . Fair service .

The atmosphere, staff and food here are amazing! Maybe it doesn't look its best from the outside, it is an old building. Just look past that, and give it a go. It won't disappoint. Very good value for money. 2 people, starters & main plus a bottle of wine & tip just over £50

Amazing curry bursting with flavour and spice well worth a visit

First time here and we were a group of four. Going to the theatre so early 5.30 booking. Not the best looking place but we were made to feel very welcome. Great food and service. Mixed starters followed by four different mains and sides to share. My favourite was the Lamb Biryani. Restaurant soon filled up so it seems like a popular choice and we will definitely have to go again.

Food was very good! They were out of something I ordered, so I ordered something else. When the food came I was brought an extra dish to make up for not having what I originally ordered. I really appreciated that. Great service.

Love this place, family run and it's obvious in the food... Which was amazing. Lots of love going into this place. It's not the flashiest.. but who needs flash when all you want is a good curry!

Upon entering, we were greeted with genuine warmth and an attentiveness that promised a pleasant dining experience. the decor is perhaps a little sparse, but this ultimately adds to the charm of the overall dining experience in my opinion. The menu, rich with diverse Indian dishes, did not disappoint. Though I had to take some advice from my waitress as to what I want to order because it all looked so appealing. When our food arrived, each dish was crafted and presented with care, and the flavours were both robust and satisfying, capturing the essence of traditional Indian cuisine. Each of the dishes was also unique, in that the flavours were not as one would expect in the run-of-the-mill high street Indian restaurant. The service stood out as excellent. The staff were highly attentive and helpful, always on hand to ensure our meal was perfect and our needs were met without being intrusive. Their recommendations were spot-on, enhancing our experience. In my opinion, Chutneys delivers more than just good food; it provides a delightful experience that combines the best of Indian culinary traditions with impeccable service. Whether you're a seasoned lover of Indian cuisine or a curious first-timer, Chutneys in Oxford is a destination worth your visit. P.S. though I am a very accomplished and seasoned consumer of Indian cuisine ;) more often than not I suffer a stomach upset after eating Indian food, even so, I love it so much that I persevere! It is definitely worth mentioning that I did not suffer ill effects after enjoying this meal. I only wish I lived closer to Oxford so that I could visit more often.

One of the few places open last night after we came out of the theatre. Very friendly staff, excellent service and superb food.

Excellent vegetarian options available

This doesn't look too good from outside and inside it's a bit minimal. But and it's a big but, the menu is extensive, portions are very generous. For us the chef modified a dish to accommodate one of our parties tastes. The food was delicious. It is easiest the best Indian restaurant in the centre of town, Oxford. Don't be put off by the outside decor, highly recommended and I've been to loads of Indian restaurants, and will be gladly returning to this one. Thanks very much for a great evening.

The best Indian i’ve had in Oxford. Lots of options to choose from and very accommodating for vegans and vegetarians. Very nice staff who helped us make decisions on what to eat. Large portions at a good price. Will definitely be eating here again.

The food taste and quality can both be improved massively! The service was very average and the place was messy. It’s a polite request to the owners to improve the standard of the restaurant specially when it’s in the heart of Oxford city.

One of the best Indian food I’ve tried. Really recommend the fish dishes, flavourful, nicely prepared, generous portion. Chickpea and aubergine side dish was great too. Highly recommended.

We went to the Chutneys for leaving do and we where quite big group of people. I was expecting something more from Indian restaurant, much more welcoming, much more food flavors, more indian atmosphere and all that. We where waiting for quite a while, lucky enough we had poppadoms but i am pretty sure they wasn't complimentary either. Water never been brought to our table even though we asked several times. Considering we where group of 17 ish people water on the table for big groups should be on the table without even asking.My starter arrived quite cold it felt to me that its been microwaved because the middle of the chicken, prawn and bajhi peaces was cold , which was a big surprise for me. I had prawn Korma for the main and it was bland, i tried my colleagues chicken korma and the taste was exactly the same as if it would be prawn Korma, no difference whats so ever. Korma is not most Indian dish i agree, however this one was the most bland korma i ever tried. And one big point - the staff must look after their hygiene the smell of sweat when your food get served put you off from the food immediately, there is no excuses for this. I would not come back to this place simply because for the price we paid i can get more flavors in any other Indian restaurant. The owner of the place needs pay attention more to how food is cooked, what flavors guests would experience and overall atmosphere of the place. To have place in city center its not everything.

Called in on the off chance of getting a seat nice food and friendly staff catered to our needs will definitely be calling in again whilst in Oxford

Madras 7/10 Peshwari Naan 4/10 The real concern I have, is why no lime pickle is offered with the poppadom selection. This just won’t do.

I ordered Jhinga (prawn) biryani which I suspect might have been meant for two people - there was no chance I was eating the whole thing. It was okay Sauces, naans, vegetable curry were yummers. Pint of mango juice banged as well

A very comprehensive menu - love that they stare that pilau isn't an option as they do not use faux colourings. Good on them. We had a chicken dhansak, chicken Balti, plain basmati rice, special fried rice, cheese and garlic naan and a potato and mushroom side. Everything was absolutely delicious. With a bit of investment in the décor this place would rival any Indian restaurant, but based on the food alone it was absolutely five star. Thank you.

Top notch food, great service and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit if you are hungry in Oxford.

The food was good, not memorable though. Prices were fair for the portions you get. What I would criticize is the customer service and the cleanliness of the place. Me and my friend had to ask for tap water 5 times, and one of the waiters, I am sorry to say, was very sweaty and the smell was noticeable. Overall, I would not go back. Hopefully there will be improvements in the future.

The food I’m afraid was just average. The waiter did say, it’s like pizza, just tell us the topping, which meant it was fast food curry. It’s ok if you like that kind of stuff. The restaurant was very run down. The floor were sticky as were most of the surfaces. And they don’t serve desserts in case you ever go. Sadly we won’t be visiting again. Good luck

Worst lamb tika I've ever had. Fluorescent red color, tasted so bad I had to wash my mouth out afterwards. The naan was burnt too.

So from outside it looks ok.. you might doubt your decision… however after we tried their vegetarian menu… fresh and soft naans delicious bhajis… and on the top of it they also gave us one of their specialty on the house… after long day a delicious food is all you want and Chutney’s is just the place for anyone looking for indian food in oxford… don’t forget to say make it spicy if your spice level is good.

Got there with 1 minute to spare, they'd shut but all I wanted was a tinned of papadoms and chutneys. Had a great chat with owner about general life stuff while I waited for food. Doubt they'd have let me order proper food as chefs were off line but it was a great visit, surprising chats and welcoming atmosphere. Will go back to eat a 'proper' dinner

A hidden gem! Delicious food that isn’t too pricey, it’s also not too busy since it’s off the beaten path. I recommend to anyone wanting some good Indian food.

If you surf through Google Maps for restaurants that have a rating of 4.5 or more, stop now. You have found the right place. This is the best curry house. Better than any curry house in my home town. Do yourself a favour, and walk in, order the phenomonal Mixed Tandoori, or perhaps the very tasty Paneer Dhansak if you're veggy (like my fiancee), and in a couple of hours write a review just like this, because of how damn good the food was.

Best Indian meal I've had for some time

Quite a old restaurant serving Indian dishes. Loved the food and the hospitality.

Went to dine in but the service was mediocre and the food wasn't as expected, sobzi chat was the worst one. Panipuri did not have mint pani, only had tamarind chutney served with the puris.

Good food. Will go back for sure.

Big menu no frills just good food and great service

Nice Indian snack. The food tasted good and the prices were right too. Just don't expect a restaurant. My biggest criticism is that the waiter touches the top of the glasses.

I don’t recommend this restaurant because staffs are rude and foods are average.

Have only been here twice and both times were well worth it. A bit unusual, in that it has more of an English cafe vibe, but If you like a great curry, visit this place! Good value too.

Absolutely poor performance, 35 minutes to get a drink, after waiting 20 minutes to take a drink order, another 5 to say have no Magners so order Gin and Tonic then another 15 minutes to after having to remind them about it to be told have no gin, so water guess what been here an hour and just got a drink... If you want quick food also be prepared to wait 1hr+ before you get anything brought to you, unfortunately I wasn't so left.... Worst Indian I have ever been too

Vegetables are too oily , we ordered dosa but no sambhar and no coconut chutney . Chutneys they served with papodum was very sweet and no green chutney was there . Overall I don’t like food

It is not authentic indian food. Terrible service and even a bit raciast for asian people! My friend first time to Oxford and terrified by the rude service.

Friendly and welcoming. The food was okay but disappointed with the quality and ended up being very expensive with all the add ons etc for what was an average meal at best. The restaurant and facilities are a bit tired and dated now and the whole place needs a bit of tlc.

Found this place in Oxford by chance! The furnishings and condition are not that great! The waiter was very nice and gave us great advice! Because we weren't sure when ordering, we almost all ordered the same thing! The waiter then gave us two typical Indian dishes for free! All in all it was very tasty and I really recommend it!

Tasty Indian tikki masala and lamb pasanda! The appetizer was nice and crunchy and came with an assortment of savory sauces. The naan was also very nice, but the best part of this experience were the heated plates.

Service & staff : 1/5 (Horrible) Food : 2.5/5 (Satisfactory) Overall : 2/5 DO NOT visit this place if you have self-esteem. The manager on the day of our dine-in was absolutely rude, arrogant and condescending. First of all, wrong orders were given to us, which we returned. After we completed the food, the bill was totally wrong and inflated as they still use manually handwritten bills without any description/breakdown of items. Thankfully, we had noted and so protested the wrong bill and they changed it. The manager was very condescending and started to pontificate that we must order everything at one go and must not order things separately, which was tad insensitive. Food was decent - nothing very special or great. The Bhindi Bhaja (fried okra) seemed to be a scam at the very least. They just served us some boiled okra which was dripping in tonnes of oil and barely had any taste. The only saving grace was Chicken Jalfrezi which was satisfactory. Would definitely NOT recommend.

Good South Indian food We got takeaway as there was lots of people waiting to be seated so I would recommend making a booking. Slightly pricey but big portions. Unfortunately no sides served with mains so you have to order sides separately. We had a chicken dish and a veg dish. Both were very good. Good takeaway packaging as well.

We were coming back to London through oxford and decided to see oxford. A quick google search and we found this Indian restaurant. I went inside to get a table for 5. I was told there is a waiting of 30 mins. I was Ok to wait but while i was their i was asked by them that do i really want to wait for 30 mins multiple times :-). Suddenly there were 5-6 britishers, the restaurant was pretty happy to oblige and give them the table and they were pretty happy for them to wait. I did not feel welcome and frankly discriminated. The whole vibe i was getting from the people there was that they do not want to give table to south asians. So, i left the restaurant and will never come here again.

Good food, reasonably priced, with attentive service. Naan and poppadoms seemed very fresh. Don't expect elegant decor, this is definitely not for you if want a luxuriously romantic dining experience. Would recommend though, especially if you're on a budget or want a quick tasty meal. No dessert menu.

Loved the food at Chutneys! We had Gosht Biriyani, Jaal Machi, Korai Chicken and Tandoori Roti. As my smile says, the food was amazing, the service was prompt and we enjoyed our evening thoroughly. 🙂 Must visit place for those who would like to have authentic Indian cuisine.

Very simply decorated restaurant with excellent Indian food. Everything prepared fresh and delicious. Family atmosphere. Price/performance OK.

The sides/rice/roti were decent enough but the main dish (butter/makan chicken) was terrible. Absolutely no flavour and the meat was small and dry. It wasn't rich or even particularly warm.

There were plenty of varities in food. We had asked for spicy food in which they just added chilli powder and mixed it raw before serving. The taste was disgusting. Not happy at all.

Beautiful food.. Service is a bit off though. Upon arrival the person behind the bar was not welcoming, the other person tried to help but couldn't speak English. However the waiter was kind and friendly.. So over all experience was nice.

Went to dine in at chutneys after a recommendation. It was really to find a table on Saturday night. We ordered boti kebab, veg biryani, vegetable curry and chicken Tikka masala. The Tikka curry was very sweet, boti kebab was a little over and vegetables curry and biryani were extremely oily. Service was good but food was mediocre.

Good food, good price and friendly staff. After walking past we booked this place as it looked very busy and popular. It didn't disappoint. The staff were really friendly and the vegetarian options were plentiful. The food was very nice and definitely worth a visit if your looking for a curry in the local area
