Some of the worst interior decoration I have ever seen, a beautiful house full of cheap plastic rubbish, totally lacking in any kind of atmosphere or style, a truly nasty experience. This should be a wonderful place, but it's not.

Dilapidated, run down, no food and odd!! The interior is dark and dingy, paint peeling off the walls. Decoration is reminiscent of a Hammer House of Horror film set. Expected Christopher Lee to appear behind the bar at any time. Staff very miserable and unhelpful especially the Brian May look alike! Hopefully I’ll ‘stop you now!” avoid at all costs.

We called by for a snack lunch, so no problem for us it was restricted menu. Happy to choose sandwiches and chips. I'd asked if the sausage was freshly cooked and was told yes. We were told there is a salad garnish and crisps. Took half an hour for the order to arrive. Sausage was cold. No crisps. Salad was the best but. Chips tasted fishy. Also was aware the chef was in the bar drinking Doom Bar on our arrival and back when we were leaving. I've always enjoyed CM for its quirks and supported Chris during the restrictions. I was led to believe new management were turning it around???? I shall still go for a drink but not for food.

822985433 What a disappointment! No atmosphere, basically a pub lunch for £70 a head. Booked the table and chose from the menu by phone, on arrival were eventually lead to a remote table and told to put our coats on the empty table and chairs next to us. Prawn cocktail, a simple starter....small shrimps, hard and tasteless with a quarter piece of lemon on side of very tall glass....dry tired turkey and fetch your own veg from the 'carvery'. Had ordered lemon meringue for dessert, but by then we decided to leave. Such a shame for my companion and I with what should have been a lovely Xmas meal and occasion. Poor show Churston Manor

Met friends here the other day. Only locals in when we got there, after a while we ordered food, UGH. Wife and friend had the ploughman’s, well, rolls were stale and rock hard, friend complained and they apologised and came out with bread and butter, come on. Prawn sandwiches were tasteless, my scampi, poor tasting and not much of it. All in, unless they change big style, won’t be going back or recommending. Sorry, avoid this one

I'll start by saying that I paid £60 for the night, so I wasn't expecting 5* service. Pros-Well stocked bar, friendly staff(when you could find them), lovely old building in good location, room was spacious and clean. Cons-building is in need of some TLC, most of the small side rooms are filled with broken furniture and equipment, reception isn't manned-we had to wait ages to check in, breakfast was lacking basic items such as jam, fruit, and hollandaise sauce for the eggs benedict! I'm not sure I'll stay again, but for what I paid it wasn't bad, just some more attention to the basics is needed.

Although on the night they had a fully booked murder mystery going on Chris and his team re arranged the snug lit a great log fire put up candles around and on the table and made my best friend and his wife feel so special they tell everybody about it that they know as they live in Bristol that's a lot of people. I have known Chris and the Churston Court for about 4 years and I can say with my hand on heart I have never met such a welcoming owner of such a prestigious establishment in all my travels around the world if it's possible he will do it and his staff are in the same mould - The food is of the highest quality and all cooked to perfection. My mate asked how I could possibly know any body like Chris a tycoon in the Business world of Devon and I simply said It was he who put his self out to know me and that's why we and our friends keep going back. - I am not related and have slated bad pubs in this area and I gain nothing from giving this review.

It is a crying shame that this beautiful, unique building which used to deserve excellent quality food has fallen into the hands of such incompetents. Foolishly, I ignored the warning of a friend and went for Friday lunch with my parents and we experienced the worst lunch we've had in a long time, perhaps ever. Although we were the only people in the restaurant, the food took 45 minutes to arrive. When it did we couldn't been more disappointed. My dad had ordered sausage and mash which was two small, overcooked sausages and a huge, bizarrely shiny, lump of dry mash. Gravy did arrive separately but there was not a vegetable in sight. My mum had ordered the mussels which was supposed to be a main course but consisted of 8 mussels and 4 small pieces of toast. I fared best with my beef bourguignon which was actually just a plain beef casserole but was at least tasty although rather dry. This was accompanied by a lump of dry mash. We asked the waiter about vegetables and were told that the meals didn't come with vegetables at lunchtime. The waiter was the saving grace of our meal. He was polite, friendly and helpful in spite of his lack of knowledge. He ensured we received some veg and comped our coffees but still we paid £51 for this pathetic single course meals and a drink each. What a rip off! We won't be returning.

We have survived Xmas and New Year period with the grandparents (all under one roof) and were certainly in need of a time out! We joined friends who were staying at Churston Court and enjoyed a fabulous evening. We sat in the comfortable bar for a couple of drinks before moving through to the period restaurant. The service was excellent throughout and the food was plentiful. Thanks very much - great night. I would advise anybody who might need a taxi at the end of the evening to pre-book as taxis are naturally busy on a Saturday evening and it would avoid a long wait.

Churston manor is a beautiful old hotel/restaraunt with nice staff . However we went for dinner last night and the food was really poor . The menu on the website was not what was on offer and when the food arrived , the starters were basic and lacked flavours . My husbands main was so over cooked it was almost inedible and on reflection we should have sent it back . My fish and mussels was good but instead of serving with crusty bread it was served with salad and potatoes most odd . I had to ask for both a finger bowl and bowl for the shells . We were not offered pudding . Over all very disappointing and as we live close by we feel even more let down as it is such a nice walk to the pub but we won’t be back sadly.

First of all, let me say Churston Manor isn't a boutique hotel, it is a extremely quirky hotel. So with that comes creaky floorboards and maybe the odd little screw missing from various places but that adds to the charm of the place. I think a lot of people don't get ambience of the place that's why from time to time there are negative comments. Iv frequented this hotel for many years, only for drinks and meals whilst holidaying in this gorgeous part of the world. I usually stay at a well known caravan park in Goodrington. But on this short 4 day break decided on Churston. I arrived on the Thursday in time for Check in were I was given room 16 at the back of the hotel and the end room. The room was perfect size for me the king size bed was extremely comfy with a good thick mattress. The bathroom although not massive was adequate with bath and shower attached. I had no issues with the water, turn the tap on and instantly there was hot water. Also a big plus for me was at night it was extremely quiet, so sleep was undisturbed. The breakfast in the morning was pretty good aswell, plenty of fruit juice, fruit, tinned fruit etc aswell. Different permutations of breakfast, but I had the full English, which was plentifull. Also as much coffee or tea as you desired. Out of the 4 nights there I ate in the restaurant 3 of those with every meal very good. Even though the restaurant wasn't very busy the service was extremely good and I must mention a delightful young girl called Alicia who was the waitress who I believe had only just started working there. She had the courtesy to have a few pleasant chats with me, so good luck with your A levels! X Also the restaurant manager Natalie who kept the ship steady and her delightful manner in the restaurant X She even remembered me from one of the last times I dined there. Something about an Irish coffee!! I found the bar staff pleasant aswell. Very laid back like it should be but business like. I had no issues staying here for the first time, even when I was checking out there was a slight issue with my bill but that was sorted out no problem with the owner, who I believe originally came from my neck of the woods. You probably cant please everybody that stays here but its a very old quirky romantic place that im pleased I stumbled across many years ago and people should remember that. One last point if there are any issues go and see the owner in a polite manner instead of one bolshi person who embarrassed himself whilst checking out. Manners cost nothing

We went on a recommendation and were impressed with the exterior thinking that it bode well for what was to come. It didn’t. The setting is very tastefully arranged for a Medieval property and the bar area was busy. We should have realised no one else was eating. The gammon steaks we ordered came with incorrect accompaniments but the kitchen must have known because the proper ones arrived in seconds. The quality of cooking was poor although the gammon itself was perfect and delicious. If the chips truly were homemade I’d suggest swapping them out for a catering version. Definitely go for a drink. Definitely don’t go to eat.

Waiting staff do not spend time in the restaurant they hang about by the kitchen out of sight so if you need assistance or wish to order more drinks is it very difficult. Even when you do order drinks you don't always get them. We were seated, ordered drinks, 2 of starters and 4 main courses. Shortly after ordering were told one of the dishes was not available & had to reorder. The starters arrived within a reasonable amount of time and were very nice. It took some time for the starter plates to be removed and we then waited nearly 40 minutes for the main courses to arrive. In the meantime other tables that arrived and ordered after us had been served theirs. When it arrived, the fish was overcooked and the new potatoes were hard and cold. The vegetables were also very hard and only a small portion between 4 of us. One of the main courses consisted of mussels in their shells, no finger bowl, bowl to put the shells in or additional napkins were offered. All of the food was inedible so the meals were left. We asked to speak to a manager as felt it was unfair to keep complaining to the waiting staff - a very poor excuse for a manager arrived, she had clearly not had any training in customer service and just tried to make excuses rather than listen to the issues and deal with unhappy customers - she also asked if we were residents (which we were not) - not sure what difference that makes - maybe you get better service and food in you are staying there?

Spent 3 nights at this quirky hotel which is situated in a quiet rural area near Brixham, and overall my wife and I had a nice time. The staff were pleasant and obliging. The food in the restaurant and the bar were very good. However there is not a lot of choice, especially if you were staying more than a week. The Bar is very lively with the attendence of locals. However this Hotel is very old(Medieval) and as a result can be prone to dust, and we saw several cobwebs between the exposed beams. There are also issues with the hot water system, which does not work sometimes. I am slightly disabled and these premises are not suitable for a disabled person. The nearest bedrooms are 21 steps up from the ground floor.Although the risers are slightly less than is normal. In addition there is only one disabled car parking place,,which from time to time is taken up by an able person visiting the bar. The rest of the car park which is quite large is also busy from time to time when people are visiting the bar.

I also asked a question about Gluten in a product he had little idea as a result did not feel confident to order any food as my friend is coeliac. We wanted to do a coastal walk from Brixham and thought that the Churston Court would be an ideal stop for lunch before heading back. How wrong we were! There were no tables available in the main bar so our only option was to sit in an annex room which unfortunately had no atmosphere at all. The lunch menu is simple - sandwiches, jacket potatoes etc which isn't a problem if simple is done well but it was all just very bog standard and with Brixham fish market down the road they just seem to be missing a trick in terms of what they could be serving up. One of our party was left waiting another 10 minutes for his course after we had all been served. The waitress apologised and a pint was brought to the table even though we didn't want one! it's just a shame as the potential for the place is enormous but you're left with the impression that it needs a bit more love and attention to get it back to the standards we remembered when we used to live in the area in the 80's.

I concur with the previous reviewer...we were a party of 8 and at £70 a head you don't expect to sit at the table with your drinks from the bar and immediately be served your starters without being given a wine menu. We asked the waiter if we could at least order wine to go with our food and were told we'd have to wait till the main course....so we went and got our own wine from the bar! The menu was so basic you would at least expect it to be done well...Borsch soup with sour cream and gherkin... Whatever thin brown consommé that was it wasn't Borsch. Asked for cranberry sauce 3 times before it finally arrived as I'd finished the turkey. Overcooked mushy cold veg , undercooked mince pies and to add insult to injury, as you stand waiting for your overpriced carvery, there's a sign up advertising the Sunday carvery at £9.95! Ate here last Christmas and can't believe how unprofessional it was this time. Very much made to feel unwelcome and at one point the Queens speech was piped through loudly daring anyone to converse through it! The only saving grace was the lovely walk through the woods back home....will not be eating here again. Feel completely fleeced .

We waited over 5 minutes to be seated at our table whilst we were abruptly asked ‘I assume you’ve booked’. Waitress was very tactile which is fine for us but wouldn’t have been acceptable for other members of my family. The food was in edible , up there with the worst roast dinners I’ve ever had. The meat was tougher than an old boot, the roast potatoes tasted like they’d cooled and been reheated 10 times at least. Veg was very minimal and gravy was full of lumps. Dined there this afternoon, as I went to the bar all the staff were more interested in arguing who got more tips then to serve me. After eventually being served our food arrived, I noticed that the angus steak burger was not served with ciabatta rolls, which was clearly stated on the menu, instead it was a cheap burger bun. The fries were meant to be skinny fries yet ended up being huge chunks of under cooked potatoes with an oily plastic taste to them. After 2 bites of burger I found a long dark hair cooked in my food and there was food stuck to my cutlery from someones previous use. The burger was horrifically dense that I had to cut it into halves to even eat it. My girlfriend had the pie of the day, chicken and ham, yet she couldn't eat it as it was gloopy and slimy. Considering there was three chefs by the bar and a completely empty restaurant. The whole meal was over priced, just for 2 meals (excluding drinks) it came to over £25 and was a complete waste of money. Would never recommend, would of expected better from a greasy spoon cafe.

Had a lovely evening meal. The French onion soup I had to start was very tasty and the mussels had by my husband were superbly cooked. The fish dishes we both had for main courses were great. I had brill and my husband had the plaice.

As a resident of Brixham, I frequent here most days after work for a quiet half hour. The amount of people complaining is minimal, yet they still come in every day ( can’t be that bad ) over the last year I have seen Chris and John put in maximum effort into making this a great place, open air cinema nights, live music, wedding events, all to a very high quality. It must be very difficult maintaining a building so steeped in history with regulations as they are. Yet it seems some people are afraid of change and just choose to slag it off at every opportunity. Shame on you !!

We had a lovely meal for four in this historic manor house. What made it extra special was the excellent service from the friendly waitress - I didn't catch her name but she said that she had only recently started working there. Well done and thank you.

Ate here Friday night, I had fish and chips which were ok just a bit cold but avery expensive, nephew had salmon with uncooked potatoes which we sent back, he was given another meal and not charged for it. Niece ordered the steak which was basically a lump of gristle. They asked " do want peppercorn sauce or would you like some other kind, she asked for peppercorn and they charged her £2.50 for the smallest pot of sauce from a packet, all in all for £61 it was rubbish. The poor waitress just kept apologising she was the only good thing about this place. Dreadful

Was so disappointed, food poor to say the least. Took the trouble to find out what I should be eating, which was spicey and Mexican. Nothing remotely like what we got which was very bland and uninteresting . What made it worse was the very verbally abuseive at the next table, not a good experience . Got to say a very strange place indeed couldn’t even escape outside , even more trouble!! Don’t go !!

After waiting an hour between starters and main course only to be told that they had run out off roast potatoes, I waited a further 30 minutes then gave up, you have only one choice of meat as they were busy and they wanted to feed everyone, really bad service and quality, shame really it looked so nice

Shambolic, abysmal, overpriced, disgraceful service. Unsure where to start, but upon arrival and finding that we had been moved from the table we purposefully booked because a regular drinker wanted to sit there is a good start. We were the only people in a restaurant (10 of us), saw 4 waiting staff but still had to physically get up and ask if we can get drinks or served in general (they were more interested in setting up for breakfast). Waiting staff seemed nice enough, but lacked any basic knowledge of their job and also common sense. Waited for over 1.5 hours for our meals (each averaging £15-20) and each meal looked like something out of GCSE home tech class. Cold, over cooked, and majority had been microwaved. Complained to the waiter and asked for the manager, said we didn't want him to get into trouble in which he replied "you'd be doing me a favour, I hate working here"!!!

Appalling from start to finish! Waitresses were lethargic, unenthusiastic and uneducated on basic hospitality. The food was disgraceful. We complained about both service and food and waited for the owner to express our disappointment. He arrived under the influence, arrogant and argumentative. Didn’t apologise once and all he cared about was that we were still paying (for food we hadn’t eaten) I would tell anyone to avoid this place at all cost, gone extremely down hill and isn’t worth the visit anymore.

As a family/couple we have regularly visited Churston court. We have done countless murder mysteries there and loved it’s character so much that we had our wedding there. All of our guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves and couldn’t compliment everything enough. Over the bank holiday we decided to go again. The outside area has improved a lot and we decided to stay for tea. The reception desk was unmanned and we had to wait quite a while to be seen to. We booked the first slot at 6pm as had hungry children. The menu was extremely sparse and a lot of what was on there was unavailable, the choice for vegetarians was practically non existent. When our food arrived it was of very poor standard compared to the extremely high quality we have experienced on so many previous occasions. I would go as far to say that I have had better value meals at Wetherspoons.

We booked some weeks before and the lady was very obliging, saying we could come at anytime and to let them know if we wanted anything other than the Roast Carvery or fish/chicken choices on the menu that she attached to the mail. When we arrived there was a live band playing in the bar, and the restaurant was fairly busy. When I explained we had a table booked for 10, the waitress confirmed we had a table reserved - they’d given us a table right in the middle of the packed bar, in front of the band! Not quite what we expected but they rearranged two tables for us to be seated in the restaurant instead when I explained this wasn’t suitable - Much better! They then took our order for 8 carveries and one Salmon, and one chicken. Having booked for 2pm, once they’d sorted our table and returned to take our order it was 2.25 - 5 mins before lunch stopped being served! They hadn’t told us that. And when we went up to the carvery there was barely any meat left. No lamb. A tiny little beef, which was inedible as very fatty, and some gammon - which we had as was all that was left. They brought us more sliced ham (cold but very nice) to make up for it when we complained there was no choice. And more roast potatoes. There was plenty of veg and more Yorkshire’s tho. The fish and chicken came some time later but was very nice. After desserts, We were then asked to move to the rear area of the bar as they wanted to close the restaurant before evening service but by this time it was after 4pm. (We had been at our table for 1.5hr - not overly excessive as there were 10 of us and all the meals weren’t served until after 3pm)

It was good to see the place really busy and we expected to wait for our coffee but after 15 Minutes I asked where it had got to and the extremely rude bar staff to whom I’d given the order told me he had no idea and didn’t care either. I asked to speak to the owner and told him how disappointed I was. He kindly made the coffee for me even though he’d just burnt his hand but the issue was really how exceptionally rude the boy had been to a customer and he didn’t take this up with the member of staff. Although local, we will not be returning so the staff member has damaged the business. Shame as the coffee was good. We were not alone in our complaint as people at the next table asked for their money back as their coffee didn’t arrive and the men had finished their beers in the 35 Minutes they had waited.

Went on mothers day with my partner and his mum Irene, loved the old paintings and artefacts, but we went for a carvery, had a drink first, bar staff very good polite, and helpful, paid for our carvery and waited for it be ready, we booked for 12.30, got to the carvery when it opened at 12.45, so not so good there, should have been ready at 12.00 as people were waiting, BUT worth the wait, 3 choices of meat,(could have all 3 if wanted) chose the meat, picked our veg, spoilt for choice, good selection, everything hot, and delicious, lovely roast spuds, Yorkshire, and about 8 veg, definitely worth going, we will definitely be going back, nearly forgot, waitresses were very good as well Irene even got a glass of bubbly, nice touch.

Did not plan a visit here not been for a few years but in the area so stopped for Sunday lunch, we were told what tables were free given a menu and then left, all staff disappeared, eventually a drinks order was taken asked for no ice drinks arrived with ice they did change them. Carver had choice of 3 meats and plenty of veg and very large Yorkshire puddings. On tucking in my partner and I both agreed it was tasteless and wished we had gone somewhere else. Took a while to get the bill as waitresses disappear a lot from the dining area. I know it has a theme but the dining area needs to be brighter just change the light bulbs and replace the ones that were out light the fire in the dining room. Overall disappointed with our stop for lunch.

A Norman Manor with a Tudor makeover and little structural alteration since on the ground floor .Beautifully preserved and tastefully converted to a Hotel, with a modern update about 80% completed by the new owners. Beds very comfortable, rooms all different and en-suite with some fourposters. Fantastic ancient atmosphere preserved on the ground floor which is largely heated by huge fireplaces and lit by candles and you feel Sir Lancelot or Sir Walter will walk in any minute! All meals were of high quality. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, but seemed to need a bit of direction.

We thought this place was familiar when we walked in. We worked out that we had seen it on " The Hotel Inspector". Still full of suits of armour, crests etc. and quite dark we were a bit unsure. The welcome was good and we ordered drinks including a Doombar which turned out to be end of the barrel and cloudy, it was changed without fuss and we sat down to order food. It was kindly pointed out that the kitchens were closing in five minutes. Despite that we had lovely omelettes and jacket potatoes at reasonable prices. We will visit again and sit in the garden if fine.

We came from Dartmouth to watch a play in Paignton. Thought we'd stop here for a bite to eat. We arrived at about 1730hrs, food isn't served until 1800hrs. We grabbed a couple drinks and started exploring the amazing rooms and features. There is some stunning history to be seen, just wandering between dining rooms. A great selection of old fire places should you want to relax for the evening; the one in the main bar being well ablaze. I do love to see a venue make the most of a fire, even when it's not that cold outside. We ordered fish and chips which were faultless. Chips cooked perfectly, fish was fantastic. We really enjoyed our visit and will definitely return.

We booked a large table for a 21st birthday meal. The staff were all very friendly and the service was excellent. Despite having a wedding on in the other rooms, we never felt like we had to wait and were cared for. We were allowed to visit earlier on to decorate the table and bring a cake too. I had the salt and pepper squid as a starter: it was cooked and seasoned to perfection and the dressing was beautiful. All of our meals were presented to a high standard and everyone thoroughly enjoyed them. It was great that the area we sat in was dog friendly so we could dine with the peace of mind that we were not an inconvenience to anyone. Thank you to the owner Chris for his hospitality and for all the staff to make our daughters special evening memorable. We will definitely be returning.

In the end, it either wins you over or not. Now under new management and renamed Churston Manor I've visited many times over the years (including more than once on the present holiday) and will continue to do so in the future. So, here are my headlines.Positives - oozes with character, history and charm, a little 'dog eared' in places (but for me that only adds to the appeal), relaxed and feels like miles away from the hustle and bustle, yet not too far from main road into Brixham and the rest of Torbay, and also close to a charming country walk down to Broadsands Beach and stunning views across the bay, great eating and drinking spaces outside in Summer and a cosy real fire in Winter, loads of parking, young but generally competent and helpful staff, good choice of drinks and generally the quality of the restaurant food holds up pretty well.Room for improvement - it doesn't yet seem to have fully emerged from the transition to new owners and the attention to the details could be better. Some of the pricing on the drink/snacks/ lite bites is a bit ambitious. Just a small nudge in the right direction should restore this to its rightful five stars.
