Churchills Restaurant in South Lakeland

Vape,Vape,Vape, thought it was illegal to vape in pubs in England, not so!!! Just visit Churchills in Boness & vape to your heart’s content. You couldn’t make it up, twinned with the slaughterd lamb!

We only went in for drinks. It was the horrendous weekend at The Lakes (2nd & 3rd December) where the snow was dreadful so it was nice to be in a pub with an open fire. Service was friendly and beers were good. Couldn't fault it at all. Would definitely return.

Good beer, lovely coffee and biscuits. Dog friendly and lovely staff . We came across this pub by chance. Well worth a visit.

I have given this 1* as it was awful! Don’t go here if you have a fur baby 🐶 We went in here for a drink and the owner + side kick were very welcoming for your money but then when your sitting having a drink S**** 💩 service 😡 Mr grumps and Mrs Plastic fantastic where the hosts 😡😡

They only offered drinks, even though they are listed as a restaurant. Nice patio and bartender, however.

Shame its not open room looks good and would be nice to finish a hectic sight seeing day with dinner at your place of stay

We visited during COVID, so food wasn't being served at the time unfortunately. At first we couldn't believe we'd found this place, as it was relatively quiet and peaceful compared to most of Bowness. The service was great, good choice of indoor/outdoor seating. BUT the best thing was that we were lucky to be there the same time as a stray cat had adopted the pub, and then had kittens! And that's how you get cats! Great to see the staff and customers taking care of this kitty family & interacting (but also being respectful and not disturbing them). Honestly I think this place is a hidden gem, it's a great place to just relax and get away from the crowds.

A warm welcome in a family run pub. Whilst they don’t sell food, the service is great and reasonably priced. The music is always good too!

I have visited here numerous times over the past few weeks, it’s changed a lot over the past few years and the bad reviews are quite old, the whole place has been overhauled. It’s a lovely quiet place down a side street, most visitors probably don’t even know it exists, it has a large beer garden which is enclosed so there’s no wind and is a real sun trap, the drinks aren’t overpriced and the staff have always been lovely towards me

A street behind the main drag, this afternoon suntrap was just what we needed for a drink on a hot afternoon. We sat out front and were served straight away. Drinks were very reasonable & it was a peaceful place to watch the world go by. Would re-visit and recommend.

The staff were extremely rude and clearly didn’t want us there, nor Do they understand COVID rules at all! The toilets were disgusting! The whole place was awful and dirty, you certainly wouldn’t want to eat or drink there! We left within 10 minutes. The drinks tasted watered down! To be honest, it wants closing down, I would hate to think these people got any of the government Covid grants, they certainly didn’t use the money on the pub!!

Lovely pub down a quiet side street. Great garden to sit outside in on a nice day too. The staff are welcoming and friendly, service almost instant and the prices reasonable. Tucked away it isn't somewhere you're likely to discover easily, but it's worth taking the small detour if you're looking for a relaxing drink.

Churchill’s is our favourite place to stay, good prices nice and clean tidy rooms, the staff are very welcoming and make you feel like family, can’t wait for lockdown to be over so we can spend a few days there 👍👍with my dog Teddy

It would appear that you have taken the reviews on you pub, that have stated that you are not sticking to covid, to an extreme level! My partner and I entered your premises...which had a total of four people in it...seated at opposite ends. We sat in the middle of your premises....nowhere near anyone...and with masks on. Completed track and trace at door and sanitised hands. We were approached by your member of staff who appeared to be irritated at us....why i do no know?? My partner then asked if you had ale...was told no! So he took a few steps towards bar....still nowhere near any of the FOUR people in your premises. And the man shouted at us and told my partner he was on CCTV ???????!!!!! We have since found out, your premise operates a table service. However, even if we walked to the toilet....it wouldve been a bigger challenge than taking a few steps,with noone near him...and with a mask on...towards your bar. That said...rules are rules. But perhaps it would be an idea to just gently tell people they cant leave their seat, rather than immediately shout at them and threaten them with CCTV! We had just arrived in Windermere....we are from Scotland...rules are different...this is new to everyone..you dont need to be so aggressive and threatening. We left. We wouldnt recommend!!

We popped in for a drink found a table before a staff member approached us asked us to scan barcode nhs covid app which was in the middle of the pub not by the entrance. Waiter service waited 15 minutes to get served. We saw a lot of customers walking around with No masks!! and not social distancing!! People going outside for a smoke not wearing masks using the entrance to the pub not the exit door. We felt very unsafe did not even finish our drinks and left. Avoid at all costs.

We visit this pub every time we come to Bowness. Great atmosphere and the bar staff are so friendly and welcoming. Very dog friendly. Keep up the great work!

Llamado en este pub el lunes 28. Seguí instrucciones, desinfectar, buscar mesa, sentarse, etc. El personal que hablaba en el bar no nos reconoció en absoluto. No hay otros clientes en el pub. Nos sentamos unos minutos y nos fuimos. El personal sigue charlando. ¡No debe necesitar el negocio incluso después de haber estado cerrado durante meses con la pandemia! ! ! Disfruté de otros lugares con hermosas vistas del lago Windermere.

Honestly the cleanest place we visited, in a lovely location off the main road. Really reasonably priced drinks too. Worth a visit.

Owned by Tony Knowles the former snooker world number 2. Nice garden. Tony is nice. Bar a little tired but perfectly clean. Great location

Llamamos aquí después de un paseo, para tomar una copa antes de regresar a nuestra casa de vacaciones. Tienen desinfectante de manos en la puerta para usar antes de entrar. Todo pago sin contacto, personal observando los procedimientos correctos de distanciamiento. Nos sentamos en el frente, tienen un jardín de cerveza más grande al lado. La señora de la tierra nos trajo agua limpia y fresca para nuestro perro, lo cual fue agradable. No tenía comida, pero olía delicioso.

We booked to stay here last minute and it didn’t disappoint. Kath was a great host and Tony made us feel really welcome. Great place to stay but also have drinks with the locals. We’d definitely return.

Very basic, needs a lot of work doing on it. Only had one drink and didn’t finish it. No atmosphere at all. Apart from the member of staff we were the only customers in there

Went in, as outside it says 'grill house'. However on Sunday there was no smell of food cooking. Has a nice seating area in the conservatory. The place was empty. The barman said 'no meals' so we left without drinks etc. (Just as well, after having read the reviews!).

10/10... you must try the hanging kebab. Lovely pub, great staff and option to eat inside (conditioned) or out.

I stopped here for a beer whilst passing the place is a dump especially the toilets I am surprised the place has not been shut down I will never stop here again

Where do I start? Absolutely stinks - toilets are something you’d expect in a Third world country - filthy and smelly,Ordered a drink and the glass smelt hence didn’t drink it.How they are allowed to serve food In here beggars belief.Avoid at all costs unless you want Cholera or Weils disease.

Just walked into here, smells of s#!t. Ordered drinks for me and the wife,then went to the toilet which were absolutely disgusting....really wish I had thought about it before ordering drinks. Bar staff & so called cleaners need sacking. Left the drinks as we didn't want to be up all night being sick. Should have gave the money to charity instead....

Only plus is that they sell alcohol and the garden gets sun. Otherwise it’s an absolute dump. Avoid.

This is the worst pub in Bowness on Windermere but actually one of the busiest.It is absolutely filthy and stinks of stale urine.The drinks taste vile..the wine I had was the worst I’ve ever had in my life.The reason it’s one of the busiest is because they have on really amazing live bands most of the time...and when I say amazing..they really are! If you have drunk so much that you can’t taste your drinks properly and your sense of smell is not that good and you don’t pick up germs easily and you just want to hear some good music then this is the place for you..don’t come when your sober whatever you do!! ....and never ever eat here!!

I went here last night with my partner and his family and it was nice enough pub. The singer on was very good.

Visited tonight to watch a band! Best band I've ever seen! Not sure what they were Called but so good!

Popped in for a drink as the bar looked amazing from the outside. How wrong were we! The place was dirty, glasses filthy and the wine wasn't good at all so only drank half. Such a shame as the pub has so much potential with the location, size and garden.

Staying at the excellent White Cross Bay site in Windermere, we decided to have a night out in Boweness. Whilst the town is scenic and wonderful, we made the mistake of visiting Churchills. The downpour prompted our decision and the sign displaying live music. The interior was dark; no doubt to conceal the decor. I paid £4 for a pint of cider, which I though was extortionate. We selected seats at the front, as the establishment was quiet. The singer/guitarist came on and I have no complaints about his act. Superb. That is where the niceties end. I visited the toilet and found them disgusting. My partner also compalined the women's facility were filthy, with brown stains around the basin. She also said there was a strong reek of cannabis. Anyway, the rain intensified, so we had a couple more drinks. I'm glad we had already eaten. We ordered a taxi and decided on one more drink, and this one tasted awful. Mine had clearly been watered down. The taxi driver told us he was surprised at picking someone up from such a dive and dropping them at our five star lodge. It was a popular haven for drug users, he told us. I am not usually offended and don't mind a pub with character, but this was something else. A beautiful town, but I would beseech all to avoid Churchills.

We stopped off for a drink after being attracted by the sound of live music. Big mistake. Short changed by the barman for poor quality beer in smelly, unkempt surroundings, we couldn't wait to get out. A visit to the toilet completed a miserable experience. Filthy with broken tiles and stinking like a broken sewer, I wouldn't be surprised if the rats wore overalls in here. Awful place. Extremely wide berth advised.

Called in here Saturday evening good live bad, dancing friendly atmosphere bar service good. Good for local live music when other pubs in the town were shutting. Worth a visit late evening and prepare for down to earth good music pub!

Great Choice of food, Staff friendly, Some great choices in local beers and Larger. Wide choice in wines, we did return to check out other food on the menu and we were not disappointed.

The place was empty which was not a great start, load music and bad drinks (shorts tasted watered down). Also the toilets (both his and hers) were full of dead ants, wish we had read the other trip advisor reviews before entering this hole. Avoid.

Visited here with friends for a few drinks whilst pub crawling round this beautiful town, we didn't even finish our first ones.

Knew we'd made a mistake when having been in most of the other packed pubs in Bowness, one Saturday evening. We entered this place to find out we were essentially the only ones in there... Soon became apparent why!

Avoid avoid avoid. Had a tuna and mayo baguette (more mayo than tuna). Baguette was wet underneath, ate top half, left the rest. Visited to loos before leaving, absolutely disgusting, hand dryer not working. Got back to our hotel and within an hour had the most dreadful upset stomach and body came out in huge red scarlet blotches. Medical opinion sought, I was told there would have been something in the food that had poisoned my body and it was fighting back, had to have anti histamines and remained by the loo. God forbid any child or elderly person had suffered the same. It needs shutting down.

We visited with the intention of purchasing food and drinks but found the place in need of a lot of talc.I ordered drinks from the bar only to be served by a miserable person who seemed like she did not want to be there.We then both paid a visit to the toilets only to find them dirty smelly and need of repair and looking at the state the place was in we decided not to purchase any food.I don,t think we will be in a hurry to visit again unless it gets a good makeover.

I'd give this a miss! Needs some serious tlc. Looks like a modern sports type bar from the outside an appealing escape or rest bite from the hustle of tourists. However on walking in we knew we'd made a mistake. The walls are more than tatty, stained and the seating the same. Some tables appear to have been ripped out but the benches remain in the cubicle. There was a huge dog near the bar which the barmaid was petting then proceeded to pour our drinks without washing her hands!Did not eat here but quite frankly would not have wanted to! We drank our drinks and left just as a little boy had entered and fallen down a step which there was no warning of. Wouldn't return any time soon

This place should be shutdown.don't be tempted to eat in there.The place is damp.The stench is unreal.stains on ceilings.barmaid not so friendly.even thought of writing a review on the place makes me feel sick to the stomach.

Heard some live music from where we were staying, so as it was a warm afternoon we felt duty bound to follow it. It led us to Churchills, and we got an outside table and an entertaining hour of music with a bit of audience participation. The music was good, the beer more than acceptable, but the building inside and particularly the toilets needs TLC. Didn't try the food, nor see anyone else trying it either so can't comment on that. The adjoining building seems to be run as some sort of hostel, as people come past you with apparently all there worldly goods. So enjoy a bit of music, but once that stopped it was time to exit.

Best place by far for lie music. DJ on a Friday but Saturdays they have great bands on. Reasonably prices drinks compared to other bars. Never ate here so can't comment on the food.

Me and my partner were having a look around when we passed Churchills,so decided to go in for a drink.

Been visiting here since 2009, it used to be a great place to catch-up with people & have a laugh, but after visiting here over the weekend, we won't be going back, the bar man was so miserable, the Carling he served was cloudy with orange bits floating in it, he exchanged it for fosters & just said it's same as Carling, haha NOT, sad that this place as gone down the hill in past year, they really need to work on it, as there's a lot of competition out there.

We went by and looked in. We had already eaten and wanted to see Churchill's. Right in the center part of Bowness. Appeared very businesslike and should be a good place to eat.

This is a bar/restaurant and I just visited for drinks and to watch footy on the TV there. It was almost empty. It completely lacks character, is grubby, has little of interest adorning the place, other than a log fire and the toilets are in need of some serious attention. I absolutely would not risk a meal there. I understand that it hosts live music from time to time but quite frankly, it would need to be a pretty impressive line up to tempt me to go back. Dog friendly, for what it's worth.

We ended up in this establishment due to a need for space for prams. Ended up with a bill for £25 for two baguettes, chips and two half pints of ale. They don't accept card and the quality of the food was the worst I've experienced for quite some time. There was no soap in the toilets so goodness know what the hygiene is like. Left feeling ripped off, hence the review. I don't like writing negative reviews but feel that people should be warned about this place.
