Choppy's Restaurant at Waggon & Horses in East Hertfordshire

Really like this restaurant. Opens Mondays unlike a lot of places. Have been a few times for lunch and food has always been good and service friendly.

Since it was local and others gave good feedback on the reviews, I thought I'd give it a try. Looked nicely presented upon entering. However the dinning experience was ruined by the table next to us. To be truthful they was plotted right next to us (might aswell been one table) Really loud and rude. I mean there was plenty of other tables to choose and the staff put them there. The Ribs was really average. The sweetcorn over charred, coleslaw tasted old and the cheap frozen chips wasn't even good. It annoys me when they charge these prices but doesn't reflect the quality. Shame cos it's local and I wanted it to work.

Pork with crackling didn't have crackling (even 2nd try at it didn't have any!) Service good. Loo didn't have toilet paper & could have been cleaner.

Amazing food. Small portions that keep you wanting more!!! Set menu great value for money!

Stopped for a pint, saw scallops on the specials board, absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked with a red pepper sauce, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff.

What a surprise. Passed this pub 'Waggon and Horses' many times. Friend suggested for a group meal. Lovely ambience, great menu, more than just seafood as we thought. Well cooked and presented. Friendly staff. Checked for allergies, reassuring. Mussels, skate, whitebait, lamb burger some of our choices. Delicious selection of ice creams and sorbets. Outside seating inviting but too cold for us on this particular evening. Lunchtime menu looked great too so we will return.

Visited on quite a few ocassions now in recent months, welcoming staff, never been disappointed with the food, well presented and very tasty. Would have no hesitation in returning.

Dirty sunshade but otherwise nice

Very tasty food and staff were friendly. We were very confused at the start because we were given four different menus. It then turned out that people within our party were unable to have some of the dishes they wanted (lamb shank, seafood linguini, hummus). Atmosphere was nice in the restaurant though, and lovely for celebrating a 90th birthday. Thank you very much!

Lovely 3 course meal. Food was freshly cooked and served really hot. I had skate, which was delicious. I highly recommend the homemade chocolate brownie .

Pleasant evening enjoying great food and service.

Awful. Three people behond the bar when we walked in, not one of them acknowledged us. Eventually, the young man attempted interest, and wet off to book is in to eat. He then came back and took our drinks order. Some sort of discussion ensued, and a full five minutes later, one of the women started to fulfill our order, and pull a pint of Guinness. She kept pouring it into a bucket, then eventually pulled a pint. No conversation, no comment about the pump playing up, nothing at all. Another couple came in after us and again, no acknowledgement and a full five minutes until she asked if they wanted serving. Very few staff, and even less folk eating. Dreadful place, let down by staff with no personality, and even less customer service.

Was excellent food loverly staff pleasant will be going again.

Lovely sevice! I just got home and got so used to my time in america and was pleasantly shocked at how clean and polite this place is. More of a statement on the rudeness of American restaurants than anything, but please keep it up, restored my faith in humanity right here

Good pub, friendly and professional stuff and tasty food. Went for a Sunday lunch and was more than happy with all dishes. Everything was great, as a Sunday lunch should be. Will be coming back for sure.

Food and drink were good but gravy gave the food a funny taste

It’s a nice place, but service was soooo slow! Took a good 40 mins for food to arrive and were only having mains!

Fabulous food at great prices. The fish is exceptional. Wine choicevwas excellent. Staff were attentive and lovely. The odd serving spoon missing did not detract from a lovely experience.

Lovely food and friendly service, but flipping chilly!

Awful. We ordered 3 meals and two of them were dropped at the table on my mum and dad soaking their clothing The two meat dishes (beef and pork) were brought back out having been under a lamp in the kitchen for 10 minutes and the meat was overcooked and impossible to eat. The plates were taken leaving one of us to eat alone. We were charged for the glass of wine that was knocked over.

Lovely food and plenty off it. Prices quite reasonable and a good choice on the menu. Service was good , waiters very attentive. We did also have food envy with the rack of ribs that someone at the next table got. 😋

The food was somewhere between excellent and delicious, possibly with a dash of sumptuous.

Absolutely dreadful, young kids that literally can’t be bothered. Service is a task, why not just ask the table if they need anything rather then walking away after the first contact 🤦‍♂️ To be fair 5* to the chefs food is alway pretty good. Just let down by the general service and atmosphere

Food was lovely. Found us a table even though it was day before mother's day.

I went with a friend for Sunday lunch. Admittedly we were a bit early but we had to wait a long while for service. Our meals were put out on the pass and were left for quite a few minutes. I had roast pork loin which was two joined chops with no flavour. It was a job to get off the bone. The carrot had a very long crispy burnt root. My friend had roast beef which was tough. We both had the artisan ice cream which was expensive but disappointing

Great food as always friendly staff

Had dinner here recently and the food was excellent. My wife went for swordfish and i had the duck, both were really good (the potatoes dauphinoise on the side were fantastic). Went for the trio of seafood for starter which was also good, crab cake had a real kick to it. The pea puree with the scallop tasted great. Shared a passionfruit cheesecake for dessert after being quite full up (not baked, vanilla base with a passionfruit sauce on the side), also excellent and a decent sized portion (there is nothing more disappointing than a bought in, baked cheesecake cut into 8 small portions). The food had the feel of all bring homemade and authentic. The two waitresses serving were also very nice and friendly. Would definately go back.

A great find. Excellent food to suit all tastes cooked superbly and served in a friendly and efficient way. Prices are reasonable and offer great value considering the quality of food.

Excellent restaurant. One downful, we were a party of 20, it was a bit cramped, with people having to get up from the table to let others out. Drinks bought at the bar to save service charge. Other than that, it was perfect.

Nice upmarket restaurant which has a good seafood menu plus normal pub classics. We had haddock and chips.

Quick bit of lunch, enjoyed the seafood pasta dish.

Went there for a pre Christmas meal with friends. Food was nice but the portion sizes were so small they were smaller than a standard kids meal. We all left feeling hungry. My girlfriends calamari starter was a joke. The calamari rings were sliced into even thinner slices it was ridiculous. The seafood linguine consisted of 2 mussels and a light sprinkle of other frozen seafood pieces. The pasta barely covered in the bottom of the bowel. Talk about stretching food out. It’s been getting worse for a while now. I won’t be going back in a hurry. Especially if I was going there hungry.

The evening menu isn't particularly enticing for me but having chosen something from their specials I really enjoyed the meal. Food was good, service efficient and friendly n handled our large disorganised group well. Bonus points for being dog friendly. Thanks

Pepper sauce was so so HOT it ruined my meal. Waiter couldn't be less interested. Shame as usually although pricey it is usually excellent.

Food was so nice but it’s a shame I saw how it was being made, chef coughed a few times without covering his mouth then continued to serve the food and then he scratched his beard while holding a toasted burger bun I ate it as I wouldn’t of had time to eat anything else and it won’t kill me but I defo won’t be going back! The service was pants the staff are too busy chatting they need more mature staff

We've been here a few times and decided to come back for for a last meal of a two day birthday celebration and and it couldn't have been a more perfect place to do so. The food is always excellent with a wide variety of options including lots of fresh fish and seafood. If you want oysters or lobster you can pre-book and let them know and they will order in specially. Our waitress Lizzie was excellent. She was so friendly and helpful and made the evening that much better. You can have great food and bad service and it can ruin the evening but there's no chance of that with Lizzie so note to the owner, keep hold of her as she makes a big difference to to the overall ambience 👏👏👏

had a lovely meal tonight, food was great and nicely presented (baked brie starter and sticky toffee pudding was beautiful) but the 5 stars is for the friendly service from Lizzie who was super helpful and welcoming all night :)

Wowsers! Fantastic food and brilliant service. Went with a group of 7 for an 8-year-old's birthday and the personal attention we received was as good as it gets.

Was given a wine we didn't order, unless we noticed it we would have paid a lot more for a wine we didn't get. Food was excellent. As for the service they were more interested in serving coffee for people outside than looking after anyone inside, we waited 25 minutes for a sweet menu which I had to go out and ask for, then another 15 minutes before we got it. These young girls should be supervised by at the least a mature person, who will show them that laughing and talking between themselves and ignoring clients doesn't deem good service. Good luck if thats how you take care of your customers.

Staff were great very polite and helpful. However the food was a let down Deep fried Brie cold Cray sandwich absolutely dripping in cocktails sauce and burnt bread Mushroom and Brie on toast burnt so bad bread was rock hard Brie so salty had to leave it Cobwebs and dead spiders on ceiling Needs good clean Toilets yuk Very disappointing

Absolutely awful. Overcooks Sardines… Worst steak I have ever had. Dry as a bone. The whole experience was very disappointing and I will not be returning.

Food generally good but the seafood linguine was disappointing.

I can’t believe how this place isn’t rammed tonight! Such a great menu, that has you salivating and left with so much choice. The Beef Wellington was melt in your mouth and dare I say so much better than Gordon Ramsey’s Heddon St Kitchen. We’ll definitely be coming back, next time for the Choppy’s exclusive. The service was great too!

An enjoyable lunch with friends. Menu was varied, however there was nothing available on the 'specials' board. Could have either wiped it clean or with a little thought could have used their imagination to provide one or two alternatives?

Went here with my family 6 adults.. The Resturan was busy only 2 lovely polite ladies working taking drinks/food orders and clearing tables - the mussels in white wine sauce was delicious paid by the kilo - lobster was £75 not cheap but bought as a treat (not something I would ever do in this country) but delicious .. everyone enjoyed their meals ..

Really disappointing. Not very clean and the food felt overpriced for the quality. Dirty cutlery, dirty glass and service was soooo slow.

Made to feel very welcome when we visited for a light lunch. Food and service excellent.

Food was very good although a bit expensive. Problem was the acoustics . Its so loud you cannot have a conversation at your own table. That's why I won't go back again, shame.

Lovely food , good location and great staff

Food very very nice. Overall experience not so great. But willing to put it down to a bad night for the staff involved, after a series of unfortunate events. We ended up not paying for our drinks,vwhich was a nice touch. The manager was very young, but did a good job in the circumstances. Would like to go back to try again! :)

Fantastic paella. Hot, fresh and delicious. Super plate of pork with an amazing, tasty jus and great service. Also,was lovely to sit out in the garden afterwards.

The service itself was astronomically pathetic, so slow came for a 3 course meal with 3 others in my group but was still sat there 3 hours later and hadent had the dessert yet! No one checked up on us to see if we wanted more drinks, empty plates sat in front of us for around 30 minutes between both the starters and the main courses. And the food is way over priced. The food itself was actually really good but nevertheless it was absolutely appalling how slow and useless all the waiters and staff are. I do have to say the manager (Harry) himself was actually a really nice, humble young lad, and did a very good job trying to rectify everything that went wrong with our experience. Really appreciate everything he did.
