Boars Head in East Hertfordshire

We have been here before and thought it was great. However, this time we got there to find the restaurant was shut? We had pre-booked our table via their website?? Google said open. Their website opening hours said open. Completely threw us and wasted our time walking there. No signs saying it was shut or anything lights completely off, no one inside and couldn't open the door. This was on 19/07/2024.

Booked 3 weeks ahead on web, got there and place was deserted. Ironically got email after asking “how was my experience”

Today I went to dinner with my family to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary, it was spectacular with excellent service, super fresh and appetizing food, a very pleasant atmosphere, I highly recommend it. Thanks so much

The menu was basic with not much choice. However the service was even worse, there was not enough staff and we were a large party who waited over an hour for our food. The staff brought out three or four items that we hadn’t even ordered! To make matters worse we had to pay a service charge that we didn’t know about, and which was never mentioned by the staff, and which the manager would not refund. If we had received a good meal with good service, we would have willingly paid a tip but we shouldn’t have been forced to pay a service charge for indifferent food and service.

Was very much looking forward to an amazing steak, however we were bitterly disappointed. We had scallops, chilli prawns and calamari for starter, all but the calamari were previously frozen and then overcooked. We had the Dallas steak, ribeye and fillet, all majorly disappointing. No flavour to any of the steaks and had a dry grainy texture. The fillet was sliced and we asked all steaks to be done medium, they were all well done. Didn’t try the desserts as assumed they would also be undesirable. Bill came to £265 for 3 people without desserts and one bottle of wine (which they thought they’d run out of but we had the last bottle). Extortionate for what was provided. Unfortunately we won’t be back.

Really quite disappointed. The service was ok, despite the server not knowing the menu. We booked a Sunday roast, which they no longer serve. The food itself wasn’t at all memorable - frozen burger and frozen side vegetables with my overdone ribeye for £80.. It’s a shame really, beautiful location and it’s clear a lot of work went into refurbishing the place in ‘22.. they just forgot about the menu. Hopefully this will change because we’d like to go back.

Great experience, great food and great service. We had a family meal here after travelling up from Dorset to see family. What a hidden gem! Great restaurant! We had a combination of meals between us and there was no complaints from anyone. We were served by Louis who was a great waiter! We will definitely be back!

What a shame the owners have let their standards slip so badly the worst service I have recieved anywhere for a long time

To start with positive, great cocktails and nice looking place with good atmosphere. Steaks however were tough, very chewey and a bit stringy. We ordered rib-eye and sirloin. Both felt like poor quality meat that hasn't been sufficiently cured. Certainly not on par with other steakhouses I've eaten way better quality meat, for very similar price, or even less. Overall not recommended if you're looking for a decent steak. To be fair, we've not eaten other food, which might be better, hope is...

AVOID, waitress children allowed to run around the whole restaurant screaming/shouting extremely loud all the time we was at the restaurant. Other staff doesn’t say anything to stop this. If your looking for a peaceful meal AVOID, shame as the food was nice.

Lovely place; excellent tomahawk and the staff were hella attentive and friendly. Couldn't figure out the music thing, but perhaps it's just not my jam!

I really loved my meal at the Boars Head restaurant as it was my birthday i was surprised with a cake. And the staff sung the birthday day song. I highly recommend this steak house.

The food was delicious and well cooked. The waiters where wanderfull they even surprised me with a cake and sang happy birthday it was my birthday. I enjoyed my time there. And i highly recommend the boars head bishop Stortford Steak house.

Could not fault this restaurant. Food excellent-had fillet steak. Life singer was very good. Service was with a smile. Will definately eat there again.

What a fantastic place, food and staff are lovely, and the bonus is on a Saturday night they have live music, we absolutely love it here

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch here. Starters of Hummus, bread and olives, followed by a really lovely Roast beef, great service and some lovely red wine.

One of the best places I have eaten it was my first experience on Saturday Night Live music and brilliant food and the service was brilliant really friendly stuff I will recommend and definitely will be coming back again

Amazing customer service, but unfortunately the food was really quite terrible. Scallops to start- clearly frozen and heated up, also the size of a pound coin. Fillet steak main was 4 medallions of meat, sub par at best. Dessert, absolutely tragic cheesecake, tasted like curdled candle wax. The staff however were great, really attentive and took the desserts of the bill. Just a major shame about the food. Will not be back when restaurants like Goggling Squid and Skew are just around the corner!

Nice varied meals , great selection

Lovely little find in Bishop Stortford. Very friendly staff who were more than willing to make our visit more relaxed. Happily turned down the music for our sleeping baby. We sat in a relaxed little beer garden out the back. They provided very tasty food (lobster ravioli and Sheesh kebab) with fabulously tasty olives as a starter. Recommended.

Booked the restaurant for a special occasion but was very disappointed with overall visit to restaurant. Food (starter/mains) was good but overpriced in my view. Dessert - requires much improvement, (chocolate cake) seemed like it was off shelf, straight from a shop, quite bland & tasteless. Service - Was main factor that I chose to give 1 star as they were well below par, and at times the waiters would suggest to me they are too busy and too wait for someone else, which was unacceptable. As a result, on multiple times I had to order drinks from bar myself, even then wait was far too long. Steaks were served without any cutlery, and by time the waiter came back with cutlery was 5-6 mins, just seemed disorganised, and as if we had to constantly chase them for everything to attempt to enjoy our evening . For the money they charge at Boars head you would expect to have a fantastic evening but was simply the opposite. Even when I asked them to take off service as it was non-existent, the waiter started to tell me this is for restaurant and not him, lol..🤦. Even though it clearly states it's optional, I pointed this out to him and then he removed it. I would avoid, as better restaurant s to go to in Bishops Stortford than here where waiters actually provide a service!

The duchess steak I had was cooked to perfection. The meat was really tender and full of flavour. Everyone I was with thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The staff were friendly and very attentive. They didnt rush us, we were left to eat and chat at our own pace. Overall a great place to eat with great quality food, fabulous staff and great atmosphere. Will definitely be back again

It was our first visit and the whole experience was excellent. The staff were very attentive and the food and drink was delicious. Great portion sizes too. Can’t wait to go back and try something else.

Very disappointed. We had dinner here Saturday night the steaks we ordered were all undercooked. Two of us asked for medium and another for well done, to which the server replied that the chef wouldn’t be happy; but we insisted that it needed to be thoroughly cooked due to dietary requirements. The food arrived and the steaks were one medium and two medium rare/rare. The restaurant was busy and service seemed rushed which might not have helped with the communication but for a so called steak restaurant, cooking a steak how you asked should be the basics. Prices are also very high for what you get. Beware the OPTIONAL SERVICE CHARGE, they include it in the bill automatically!

Amazing Saturday night dinner! Brilliant atmosphere and brilliant food! Chicken shish was great. 10/10 service and entertainment from the live singer Alysa! The staff were super welcoming and attentive - probably the best we have experienced in a long time. Definitely recommend here! 5*

Evening started off very good - brilliant reception, sat at the fantastic bar and had a few great cocktails. Barman was drinking pints which was a bit of a red flag... A few of us had prawns to start - and they were not nice at all. Luke warm, very tough and clearly not fresh, I sent mine back (I was offered something else but didn't take anything). Ordered Tomahawk - they had none (despite all the fridges full of steak in the bar). I ordered the Ribeye rare, it came out medium (it was nice, but I like it rare). Waiter totally got the order mixed up, and spilled my wine over the table (the one who was drinking). Other main courses were very nice. After, no one came to ask for desert, coffee etc so we had none. We ordered more cocktails - and had to send one back as it was terrible, I actually think they forgot to put the spirit in! Music was too loud to talk comfortably. We had a great evening (because of the company), but for the prices, I will not go back. Could be so much better!

Went here for a celebration and ordered quite a lot of food. The service was fantastic, starters were absolutely lovely, the flavours were really really good. I ordered the wagyu steak and it wasn't the best but certainly not the worst I've had by any means. Will highly recommend

Unexpected steak restaurant in an old timber beamed pub. Very expensive steak so we ordered off the pasta and burger menu. Well presented food, with an underwhelming flavour. The decor is very mismatched, giving turkish restaurant vibes. I didn't like the drying meat on display at reception.

So disappointed with the whole dinning experience for a mother's day treat. So much was wrong struggling were to start.

We originally came to the Boars Head for one drink but ended up staying for hours. The waiting staff are so friendly and welcoming and made the most delicious cocktails. The interior is lovely and they even had an open fire to keep the place warm and create a cosy atmosphere. We had a great time and are going back again today to try the roast! Couldn’t recommend enough!

We walked in tonight, Saturday, without a booking for 5 people for my birthday as another venue had let us down. We were made to feel very welcome and the food was amazing. There was also a live singer that enhanced the atmosphere. We will be coming back. *****

Booked table for 8pm arrived early for some cocktails, at 8.15 our table wasn’t ready Then 8,30 we were told it would be a few minutes Finally seated at 8,40 at a table that had a draft and was freezing cold . Got up to leave as now was feeling really dissatisfied and disappointed with the customer service Was asked to stay and they would find another table 15 minutes later no table so we left ! Awful way to treat customers they clearly had double booked and weren’t even apologetic Will never return , in Bishops Stopford there are many good quality restaurants offering amazing food and service this isn’t one of them

I've been here 3 times now, excellent service and food.

Spent a lot of money on the Wagyu steak and rump steak as the place looked nice. Cocktails and bar staff were really nice. But the word “steakhouse” should not be used when taking about them. You’d better off spending money on a ticket to London (or even a taxi at these prices), go to average 4* place and they would do better steak there. Wagyu steak tasted like it wasn’t even cooked, and I could do a better rump steak. I felt sorry for the Wagyu that was used for this meal. Its rare when I chose not to tip, but when complained I didn’t even get a sorry, I’ve never been so disappointed about a steak place.

Was welcomed at the front door shown to our table and handed menu's. After being seated for approximately 20mins we were asked if we would like to order drinks, this should have been done when we were handed the menu's and so after around 15 minutes later our drinks arrived so now we had been sitting in the restaurant for 35 minutes with no order taken for food. So the service was very poor. The food was nice, but very over priced for Turkish food. We paid our bill which had a service charge which we didn't notice at the time and gave one of the waiters a tip which really he shouldn't have accepted.

We went to the Boars Head after it being recommended by several people online, we are foodies and was not disappointed. The food and the service was exceptional and the restaurant is beautiful. Are only disappointment was booking early evening meaning we left before the DJ and disco started but this is a excuse to return. The team are warm, welcoming and very attentive, the food is just incredible and the restaurant is very nice. We will definitely be going back.

Had a party in the back garden, felt in my granny's house at some point, there's even a horseshed in the garden 🤣. The interior deco is stunning, it does not make you feel uncomfortable, everything is where it needs to be. The menu is decent, price are reasonable. I had a fried cheese as a starter recommended by the fat and bald guy who's walking around, very sweet man most be the owner. 8/10 And a Fillet steak which was one of the best I've ever had I will be back 100%.

Really lovely interior and garden outside. The waiting staff were also very friendly. Starters were tasty. However, very disappointed with the steak. I had a rump which was tender but very bland. Two other guests had T-bone which was very tough. Not worth getting steaks for this price which is a shame as they are supposed to be a “steak house”. We could have had better steaks cooked at home. Maybe if it wasn’t a steak house and we had ordered something else, we would have had a very well rounded meal. But on a good note the cocktails were tasty.

We had a very enjoyable meal a couple of days ago, and as we were a family party of ten with various meals the service was marvellous. The food was faultless, I am not a steak eater but after trying my husbands I think that will be what I order next time. It was also a celebration which the restaurant went out of their way to make the most of the evening. The best Irish coffee.

The restaurant was very pretty, but that’s where it ends. Ordered ravioli, each plate came with literally five of them. The T-bone steak had so many bits of fat that my friend had to remove. Wouldn’t mind the extortionate prices if the food was delicious and the portions were acceptable, but paying £18 pounds for five ravioli, ending up ordering chips to fill me up and going home hungry is just not acceptable. To top it off, we politely tried to let the waitress know at the end of our meal to give them a chance to get it right rather than through public reviews; she had a go at us without even listening “Now I can’t do anything, next time if you have problems you need to tell me when the food comes”. We didn’t want to create problems, just let her know what we thought but kept talking over us and refused to listen. That service, people, came with a 12.5% service charge.

Waiter Alin, was great. However pricey for what it is. You pay for the entertainment. Which was fun. Not a cheap night out. Our husbands tried to join us for a night cap but were refused entry. As the place was emptying out at this time, really not sure why more money being spent was refused???

Booked a table for my hubby's birthday and I can honestly tell that this is going to be one of my favourite places in Bishops Stortford. Lovely staff and food was to die for, and worth every single penny.

Fantastic food here; my steak was amazing and my wife really enjoyed the octopus starter and lobster ravioli. Staff were very friendly and attentive as well, will absolutely be back as this place is a bit of a hidden gem.

A thoroughly enjoyable meal at The Boars Head last night. Attentive and friendly service, timely and well prepared drinks and a Perfectly cooked and seasoned Ribeye Steak. Chips were just right and tender vegetables were delicious. A very good Malbec completed it! It takes experience and skill to deliver a meal like this and on this occasion they exceeded. Will definitely be returning and recommend mid-week reservations.

Food was great service was terrible. We waited 30 minutes for our table which had been booked in advance. People who came in after us were seated straight away. Other people who were waiting were giving complimentary drinks and we weren’t. When we asked about our table we were told “we need to wait our turn” which was extremely rude coming from someone who is front of house for the business. Once seated we had to look for someone to take our orders so we were waiting around again for this. For the price you are paying you expect exceptional service along with your meal and we did not get this. Very disappointing and has put us off going again.
