There has been a few poor reviews lately but we used at the beginning of June and a biggish order and the food was of a very good standard and this is the first time we have used for some time as we avoid too many take aways! It was quiet but it is a take away not a sitting restuarant.

Best Chinese takeaway we’ve had in Hitchin. It used to be good but didn’t deliver, and was put off by the negative reviews of new ownership. Maybe that was just them settling in though as the two takeaways we’ve had have been great. Regents cottage aside, this is incomparably better than the other Chinese takeaways.

Delicious take away dinner. We had Singapore Noodle with rice vermicelli and extra chilli annd vegetables with satay sauce. The vegetables were wonderfully fresh and crunchy. The satay sauce had little segments of pineapple. Wonderful. The Singapore Noodle had lots of prawns and meat cut finely, and lots of fiery chilli. Superb!

It's the end of an Era, been eating here for 30 years and it's sadly gone down the pipe, doesn't taste fresh, very expensive and the amount of salt in the meal was terrible. Never again.

Since management has changed hands , quality of food has gone down and prices have gone up! Young lady taking payment doesn't even say please or thank you . The quality was good at first but not now it's just average but not worth the money they are charging. I've been coming here for years but will go elsewhere now. Wouldn't recommend anymore. They should change the name instead of living off a good reputation. No excuses to serve up average dishes for premium prices .

the food is actually disgusting and so bland now, idk who's bright idea it was to change chefs but they made a big mistake. this used to be the best chinese in the area but wouldn't bother wasting my money or time now.

So sad to be writing this review but so disappointed. Loyal customers for 35 years and over the last couple of years there have been some changes but whatever has happened in recent months seems to have caused this well respected establishment to be a shadow of its former self. It’s very clear there have been cost cutting efforts (understandable in current climate) but this is to the detriment of the food quality. Ordered chicken chop suey and what I received was so far from the original I used to order. They’ve opted to go for a sweet n sour style sauce rather than the original white sauce! Not sure as to why they had to ruin a perfectly good dish!! The seaweed was chewy and the veggie spring rolls were so clearly frozen and had little to no filling! Bland food with poor quality ingredients. You can see from recent refurbishments internally it looks as if they’re going for a bland look with no atmosphere, when you’d usually hear a hustle and bustle in the kitchen there was just silence! I think this will be our last time ever ordering which is such a shame! RIP Chop Suey Bar as we once knew it!

Gutted to say the least...been using this place for 40 yrs...but not anymore shockingly bad food..well compared to what it was up till about 3 months ago!! Bland boring tasteless no unique flavors..all gone..must be thousands of loyal customers over the years very disappointed.such a shame!! And to still call it chop suey bar is a joke.

This Chinese take away used to be our go to place for a nice Chinese chicken curry and more but recently the quality has plummeted and the price has rocketed....... Tonight's curry was basic with none of that mysterious spicy taste that always distinguishes a take away from the supermarket equivalent. The rice was very plain and not very tasty. The price was, I thought too high for the items we ordered. I don't do a lot of reviews but felt after tonight's effort from this restaurant that I had to report. I won't be going there again. It's such a shame that this restaurant has gone downhill.. Just my opinion, I hope it helps

The best Chinese in town is no more, having been taken over by some outfit from Stopsley the menu is now bereft of all the family favourites. The special fried rice has no egg, the gravey/sauce is a out of the bottle cheap kind and not the unctuous rib gravey it should be. Also the cartons have changed from fully recyclable foil/cardboard to plastic. Needless to say we're looking for a new place to get our fix :(

The Hitchin Chop Suey Bar has always been good, but they have a new chef, apparently, and the food tonight was excellent - fresh and flavoursome.

We’ve used this takeaway for at least ten years, if not more and apart from a blip, due to a change of Staff, the food has always been good. Food was on time and was well cooked and very good. Staff were friendly and always check everything is ready to go. Well worth a visit.

I have been coming here for over 25 years. Tastiest Chinese around. We have tried a few!! Only thing … Large dishes are still quite small Prices have gone up, definitely now the most expensive around. Still … yummy though.

I've used this place on and off for over 20 years, but after tonight I'm done with it. It's always been a bit more expensive than other takeaways, which used to be justified, but it's really gone downhill the last few years, And the portions are now comical - a £13 meal bar barely covered half a plate tonight. I can forgive expensive, I can't forgive expensive and stingey.

I decided to try this place after several recommendations from friends. The food is really nice with lots of dishes to try that aren’t available at other Chinese Takeaway places (try the King Prawn Cantonese style). Veg options are a bit lacking (they haven’t joined the Aubergine band wagon like other places), however all the meals are obviously ‘home made’ rather than just reheated/deep fried. The Pancake roll (large) is definitely the best I’ve ever had. They don’t deliver & aren’t on any apps, but I’ve never had to wait longer than 25mins between ordering & collecting my meal.

Its a little bit expensive but its one of the better chinese takeout places in Hitchin. Food is tasty and when I go to collect I never need to wait very long, its pretty much ready on time. Its a regular place for us.

Hitchin Chop Suey is still one of the best Chinese takeaways in Hitchin. You won't be disappointed.

The best Chinese in hitchin in my opinion. They don't deliver, which I think is cool and I think their opening hours aren't long either. But well worth the walk to collect. You can order ahead or buy at the counter.

Good quality food but expensive. Less meat in the dishes even though the price keeps going up. The two youngsters behind the counter have no manners and never say please when they ask for the money and rarely say thank you.

This used to be the best Chinese in Hitchin by a country mile, been coming to chop airy bar for over 40x years,ever since I was a kid,but sadly this place has gone downhill dramatically,especially when Kathleen and her family retired and sold the business a few years ago! The prices just keep going up and up and the food quality keeps going down and down,I won’t eat from here anymore !! Sad times !!

Been visiting this take away for over 25 years. A fantastic family run business that’s easily the best in the area..(that’s saying something with so many restaurants and take seats nearby) The food and service has always been fabulous. Never ever had an issue. Highly recommended !

Sorry to say my takeaway was awful. Won ton soup was tasteless. Pancake roll was tasteless. Sweet and sour chicken balls stodgy batter, once you cut into them. Chicken chow mein was excellent and thank god. Not a good experience.

Great meal. Initially concerned as our Crispy duck was very, very crispy but the rest of the takeaway was fantastic.

I usually go to magic wok which is so fresh and tasty and the portions are huge, but due to covid is closed at the moment. Collected my Chinese which was ready and waiting, which I was impressed with however the food Portions are tiny for a Chinese (usually a meal for 1 is enough to feed two!) the egg fried rice has no egg in it and is bland, the chicken balls are over fried, greasy and all batter with a tiny bit of brown pork in the middle, the chow mein is the only decent part. Paid £10.80 for this and really is not worth the money!

Cant understand the bad reviews. They did drop standards for a while, but back on form now. Have to order from here when my fussy girlfriend visits as it is the best anywhere.

Food is great, our favourite Chinese takeaway only gave four stars tho as a delivery service would encourage us to use them more but we often go else where due to lack of a delivery service. Unless anyone can reply with a service that can collect from here? 🤔

Walked in and ordered this was very quick but the food was awful. We were up ALL night presumably from the MSG in the food, it was sickly sweet. Came on trip advisor this morning to see if anyone else had complained and the other comments are spot on I would say, wish I read them before! Agree with the halal meat side of things, wish I knew this before too as I don’t agree with this method and wouldn’t have gone in there if I new that. Do not use this Chinese.

Worst take away I have ever had! I called to tell them how disappointing it was. The reply was you bring it back tonight and we will refund you for what you haven't eaten!!!!!

Terrible food, chicken curry ordered and meat in it was not chicken, not sure what it was but so fatty inedible. Rest of the curry was swimming in grease!

This restaurant has taken a turn for the worst. I don’t eat chicken from there (because they serve halal chicken) yet my order of sweet & sour king prawn balls, was mixed up with chicken balls. They eventually agreed to refund my money!!!! Furthermore, these prawn balls have become considerably smaller in size over the last few months. Yet the price per portion has increased. I would highly NOT recommend this place.

The worst Chinese ever. Been here quite a few times in the past so decided to revisit as was in the area visiting relatives, but certainly wont be going back! The rice was hard, the chicken in the chow mein was hard and very chewy, the meat in the sweet and sour chicken balls was also hard and chewy, the sweet and sour sauce was tasteless and too thick, and the Hong Kong style chicken was just stodge! I assume all the chicken meat had been re-cooked for it to be that hard and chewy? Absolute waste of money. Normally I wont waste food, or save for another time, but the majority of this meal went in the bin! Would not recommend and will not be going there again.

Sadly that was very disappointing, wasted money, should have just had cheese on toast! Couldn't stomach it all and only the starter odeurves between two of us as a snack. My boyfriend tried here ten years ago and said it was disappointing but I said let's give them another chance, sadly he was right. Seaweed too dry, veg rolls had more pastry than filling, prawn toast best bit but not moist, ribs were weird, hoping for moisture but like KFC but deep fried pork which which I do not consider as tasty food. Sorry but that's what the experience was like, sad end to the evening🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁😢

Absolutely the worst Chinese meal I have ever had. We ordered the meal for 3 (C1) The chicken balls came with a pot of dark brown liquid with a layer of congealed fat on top, It looked more like the scrapings from the wok than sweet and sour sauce. The pork dish consisted of 1 decent slice of pork, 6 or 7 pieces of fat and assorted overcooked vegetables of unknown vintage. The beef was little better. The rice was actually quite edible although it had a slight chemical aftertaste that I could not identify and the Prawn Crackers tasted only of oil which seemed to be a little rancid. Had it not been for the fact that we had travelled 15 miles to collect it in the first place I would have taken it back and had an argument with them but after a hard day I was not in the mood. Instead the whole lot went into the bag and got thrown in the bin, £27.00 down the drain! I will never revisit and to be honest my advice is that you do not either! I can only think that the other good reviews on here are put on by friends and family because I do not recognise any of them as pertaining to the meal that we received.

Used to be easily the best in town but sadly gone to being one of the worst! Portion sizes have got smaller and the the food is not anywhere near as good as it used to be. The food is greasy anything in batter is soggy and chips are always re-cooked. The order collection time was always spot on now your waiting for ages when you collect. I ordered on Saturday for the last time ever, the order was 25 mins later than advised, I checked before leaving and two dishes missing which I had to wait another 10 mins with no apology at all. To make matters worse I am still laid up with food poisoning. Do yourself a favour stay away and spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.

we have been using Chop Suey Bar since December i have not had 1 bad experience. We use mainly fri/Sat night. The chilli beef (I ask for the sauce separate) but I think it comes that anyway....is mmmmmmmm and to die for. Thank you and keep up the good work, and we will use you again again

The halal thing was the icing on the cake for me. Been a customer for 17 years. Ordering from Hitchin chop suey bar practically veery weekend. Over the last year, the food has deteriorated in all aspects. The curry doesn't taste half as good as it used to. The prawn balls have shrunk. The sweet & sour sauce used to have various vegetables in it, but that stopped (years ago might I add). The chicken wings hardly have any meat on them. It's appalling. All this, whilst the price continues to increase a bit by bit, all the time.The final straw was when I found out they've been serving halal meat all this time. Admittedly, naively, I assumed it wasn't halal and so never bothered to ask. BUT IF YOU'RE FEEDING US HALAL, AT LEAST TELL US OR STATE IT SOMEWHERE ON YOUR MENU OR SHOP!! Not all of us eat halal!!! Furthermore, the new owners are just rude. the old owners were oh so friendly and always smiling. Boy has this place gone downhill.Have stopped eating there now. By the way, Magic Wok across the road is halal too!!!!!!

My family and I used to regularly order from Chop Suey Bar, it was the go to take away! Now they have gone the food is disgusting. The chicken balls were burnt and inedible. Will not order from here again.

Used to be very good but now original owners have retired the meals are terrible, the service is poor with everything being a hard effort. Previously the last owners were very happy and friendly. Now it's just miserable. Will not use it again.

Used to be the best in town - tonight for a second time I had the worst meal I've had in ages - dried out chips reheated too many times - curry sauce that was like eating a spoon full of salt and spare ribs that were like they had been boiled rather roasted or deep fryed.

I have used this Chinese as my local for 5 years -and had some amazing food - the last twice it was awful - dried out chips - curry that tasted of pure salt and boiled spare ribs - I rang to explain and offered the opportunity to refund and asked if new chef had started as was a big difference - they were so rude and would not believe food was bad unless I took it back - he said he would refund as long as I never shopped there again - nice ! He can keep his refund and I won't shop there again - my initial call was just to be helpful - what a pity having been in business for 14 years he hasn't learned to value his customers and their feedback when food is frankly awful

This family business was a huge part of my life. Walking around town with my parents was like being local celebrities! Good reputation from friendly service and amazing food! This restaurant is what gave my family the life we can have today!

Deliciosa comida a precios razonables. No hemos comido en el restaurante ya que teníamos una comida pero sin duda un orden de aquí de nuevo.

Tenía mi primera llevar desde aquí esta noche. La comida estaba caliente y rápido. No estoy seguro sobre la salsa dulce y amarga (raro sabor ) o el pollo suey (no hay color en el pollo y la salsa fue no era genial ) de Chop pero comeré desde aquí de nuevo. La señora que me atendió era amable y eficiente, y sólo tuvimos que esperar 10 minutos.

Always struggled to find a good Chinese in Hitchin and finally got round to trying here.Fantastic Chinese. Speedy service and very tasty food that didn't leave that horrible dry feeling in your mouth the morning after. The crispy chilli beef was lovely and nice to have the sauce seperate. The duck was especially good also and very generous portions.

Been coming here for over 9 years, by far the best Chinese takeaway around. Authentic high quality food, no stodgy fake tasting crap you get in some places. Service is brilliant, the lovely lady on the phone is always prompt and concise and I've never had a wrong order. Always get a couple cans of coke free with our orders. My girlfriend loves this place so much she wont eat from any other Chinese takeaway!

We were thinking of going down to China Town in Leicester Square this evening but didn't get around to it. Instead tried the Chop Suey Bowl for the first time and how good was that! Only down side as other reviewers have mentioned is that there is no delivery service. But I certainly wouldn't mind driving to pick up the food if it tastes that good!!
