During a break in the area we visited for a meal and were the only customers dining in and does appear to be more of a takeaway restaurant rather than dine in. We opted for a set meal at £12-80 each and have to say we thoroughly enjoyed the food. Was a little cold inside the restaurant with people opening and closing the door but perhaps we sat in the wrong place. Lovely English girl taking order and serving who did have some character but place is generally tired and in need of a good clean up and redecoration. Having said that we really did enjoy our food which was cooked for us and was hot and tasty.

We'd been to the Chinese Lantern on a previous trip to Hornsea so knew the décor and service were nothing special but that the food was good. Two years on, nothing much has changed. The décor is a little more tired and the service is slow and vague, but the food is still delicious. A shame they can't teach their staff the difference between a soup spoon and a teaspoon, or what a Chinese soup spoon actually looks like! Wine is only sold by the glass, and our 2 glasses of rose arrived looking decidedly like red (it was quickly replaced). The catalogue of oddities added spice to the evening and we certainly enjoyed ourselves (and the food).

Dined here because of it's convenient location to our stay. Service was welcoming, friendly, courteous, professional and very accommodating. Starters (soup and ribs) were lovely. Mains (scallops, duck and seafood) were incredible! Topped off with desert (pineapple fritters) which tasted spot on. The best Chinese food we have eaten for a long time ( and we have travelled around the country). A big thank you to all at the "Chinese Lantern" for making our evening great.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but used the Chinese Lantern for takeaway whilst staying in Hornsea. We found the food was reasonably priced and we enjoyed what we had. The only slight disappointment was the egg fried rice which had barely any egg in it.

Not wanting to drink & drive on our Aniversary we decided on a Chinese Takeaway from the Lantern. Staying in Hornsea in a friends home it was easy to do, along with a bottle of Alcas we enjoyed the meal, shared starter, prawn dish, crispy beef & chicken satay were all delicious with a special fried rice Mmmmmmm, !!!!!

My family and I ate here a few years back and it wasn’t great and foolishly thought I would give it another go in the hope that it had improved. The staff are very welcoming but the food and drink are just so poor. Not average or mediocre or even acceptable. Actually bad. This is the first negative review I have ever left. I actually can’t be bothered to detail the myriad faults I would be here all day. Suffice it to say; flat tasteless soft drinks, burnt sweet and sour, big lumps of gelatine floating in the soup and no detectable taste. Very sad, such a shame.

I am not a lover of Chinese food but I do love my family. So when they decided they needed something other than something and chips we found Chinese Lantern and turned up for their "Happy Hour" menu (two courses for £7 per head). Plenty of room for a family of six and although it was a limited menu there was plenty of "standard" chinese choice to suit all. Prompt and pleasant service but not rushed at all - no children's portions so plenty of picking at the 5 and 8 year olds left overs! Desserts came extra but who can deny a grand daughter their choice of ice cream? A couple of soft drinks each and a final bill about £70. Quite reasonable and good fun was had by all.

I use trip advisor a lot to make decisions about where to go , where to eat etc.I experience of Chinese takeaways these days are lots of sauce but limited amounts of meat. That was not the case from the Chinese Lantern, the food we ordered was prepared swiftly but still with quality and substance. I was very impressed.

We frequent Chinese Lantern often due to it being the best Chinese restaurant and takeaway for many miles around. The owner is extremely friendly and has a clear understanding of vegan requirements. We've ordered many delicious vegan versions of our favourite dishes. Nothing is too much trouble! We have had pretty much all the beancurd dishes and a few additional requests - the salt and pepper beancurd is a very tasty starter and they are happy to make adjustments to cater for vegans. The food is always freshly cooked with good quality ingredients, although do expect to wait a little extra time when collecting your order, especially at busy periods. However, the food is well worth waiting for!

The service was good (though the waitress should wear a skirt that doesn't keep needing to be pulled down everytime she walks!). The mixed starters were OK but the crispy rolls were disappointing. My husband had the house special chow mein and it was lovely but a tiny portion, about a third of the size of the portions at Yinjibar in Hull where we usually go. I ordered the Green curry. It was hot, so hot I eat one tiny mouthful and it seared my mouth. It didnt warn on the menu that it was very hot, if it had I would not have ordered it. I sent it back but was told that was how they made it authentic.I didn't really want to argue but i did point out that I have had hundreds of green curries and none have ever been searingly spicy, even in Thai restaurants. The owner just told me it was very popular, people like it like that. I pointed out that it didn't say on the menu that it was hot and perhaps that would be a good idea. None of this was taken on board. She was quite adamant and mostly talked over me, even when I told her very spicy food can (and has) put me in hospital on oxygen through anaphylactia. Thankfully I only had one mouthful. They did offer to cook me something else but my mouth was burning and that finished my appetite. It hurt!At the till she said as I had only eaten half of it she wouldn't charge me full price. i informed her that I had only had one mouthful, so she scratched it.So my husband is hungry again now due to the tiny portion and I am heading for the kitchen for some much needed supper.

Having read reviews of the two Chinese restaurants/takeaways in Hornsea we decided to try the Chinese Lantern on the toss of a coin as both had good and bad reviews previously.I can honestly say that the quality was pretty good and value for money. We had a takeaway and took the food back to our motorhome on a site about 10 minutes from the restaurant and it was still piping hot, and I mean piping hot, when we got back.I had crab meat and sweet corn soup to start and found it very tasty and of a good consistency. As tends to be the norm nowadays the majority of 'crab' was of the crab stick variety but this came as no surprise and it was still very tasty.I then had sweet & sour king prawn Hong Kong style which again was very tasty with 8/9 very large king prawns, carrots, onion and green peppers. My wife (the ultimate fussy/plain eater) had dry spare ribs and chips. She said they had plenty of meat on them, were not greasy and tasted very nice. All in all good food without any of the problems others seemed to have encountered. We wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future.

I had read reviews about the Chinese Lantern and confess I tried to convince my wife to pick an alternative. She insisted we give it a try so off we went. When we first walked in, I actually thought that, maybe, it wasn't a Chinese restaurant any more.Inside looked more like a cafe. There was also no background music which I thought that was a little strange but maybe that's just me. There was only one other couple in but it was very early on a week night. I sat and waited for the service to be poor and the food to be bad but everything was quite the opposite. The service was good and the food was excellent. The staff and the owner took time out to chat with us. When the food came it was was well presented just the right portion size and tasted great. I've no doubt that we'll be back again.

My brother called in for a takeaway banquet for 3 people on Sunday teatime on the bank holiday weekend. We had seen some good reviews on Tripadvisor so on the spur of the moment decided to try it. I am sorry to say it was something of a let down. There were prawn crackers (some so hard, nearly broke my teeth), spring rolls (which were ok) and crispy duck pancakes to start. The duck was tasty. The strips of cucumber and spring onion were nearly curly, definitely dry anyway. There were four dishes for the main and two fried rice. The rice was ok, felt like it had been recently cooked, as was one of the dishes, pork we think. Spare ribs not bad. The prawns in the sweet and sour were juicy and fresh. The sauce though was so brightly coloured and very sweet and a little hot? The last dish of the four was awful. We couldn't tell what it was, other than really tough strips of some fried meat in a batter. Unbelievably chewy, I would say even burnt? How many times had this been reheated we wondered as we tried to chew and swallow them and actually gave up. They were in a very spicy highly coloured sauce again. It just all felt a bit strange and uninspiring. I kind of feel we buy Chinese takeaways, and what we eat in some places here in the UK (East Yorkshire) is so far removed from the delicious healthy food I've eaten in Hong Kong and even Australia. We're being duped! Really sorry to write a negative review, it's my first. Sadly this is one local (family) who won't make a spontaneous visit to the Chinese Lantern again.

I ordered pork with mushrooms and noodles, my portion was a good size and was fine.. Although I do think it's sly when you have to order noodles or rice as extra..My partner, his nan and aunt went for the set meal for minimum 2 people (option C) and when ordering it was stated that my partner wanted it to himself and would share bits with me (so none will be wasted) and then his aunt and nan would share too.. But what came out was maybe just about enough to go between two of them, Their meals were average..We should have ordered everything we wanted separately so we would have all left full and satisfied..Drinks were ordered and came out wrong/unsure what they were. Port and lemonade was ordered but it wasn't the right colour or taste so still not sure what it was and 2 cokes were ordered but we're really flat, when we mentioned it to waiter Jack he explained to us that he had filled half our glasses with flat coke from yesterday and half with a fresh bottle! Was horrible and he never changed them either just said sorry..Staff we friendly, service was a bit slow and we were left sitting there for quite a while waiting for the bill even tho they knew we were all done and didn't want any more drinks etcTake out is the better option in my opinion

I went into this ' restaurant ' whilst on holiday in Hornsea. We were greeted by a girl in school uniform !! who showed us to our table. (Not a good start and we should have left then). The room had no atmosphere at all and felt bitty. I had to ask for some music to be played to try and give the place a bit of feeling. We waited a bit too long for our food and when it did come it was not a good quality meal. Not high standard. The lady in charge was very polite but a bit too friendly with the next customers who she seemed to know. They started to talk to her about their hospital procedures whilst we were eating our meal. Also I feel that there was only one chef in the kitchen and that persons time was also taken up with cooking the takeaway meals that people came in to collect, thus making us wait longer for our food. The eating experience at this restaurant was not special at all and I wish I have stayed indoors and had beans on toast. On leaving I saw the school girl in the through room at the front of the restaurant at her computer. Most disappointed.

Just wanted a quick meal so popped to local takeaway. Great welcome and quick service but disappointing meal. Chicken with ginger and spring onions was a pile of chopped ordinary onions and huge chunks of ginger instead of fine slices and a few pieces of chicken. Ordinary fried rice was just rice mixed with loads of soy sauce, just a bowl of brown mess. Pancake roll was ok but no better than those available at Aldi. Not great.

We were staying in the area for a week and had a takeaway from Jack's. There was a good veggie choice on the menu, which included tofu / beancurd. The sauces were tasty. The main dish and rice portions were generous. Definitely recommend this place.
