Chinese Chequers in Mid Suffolk

First time we went, this restaurant was nice, delivering good food quickly at reasonable prices. So when we went again a few days ago, was rather disappointed. The service was very very slow - waiting an hour from getting there to our first food was excessive. A table of customers next to us walked out due to long waits. The food was mediocre this time. A lot of sauce, not a lot of veggies or meat within it. They delivered some wrong dishes to that ordered as well. I hope they get their act together and return to the quality of food and service they originally had.

I have only lived in Norfolk for a few months and have been searching for a proper sit-down Chinese Restaurant ( not a takeaway ) since moving here which had either free or very reasonable car parking closeby. I found it with this Restaurant. The food was excellent as was the service and atmosphere . I will definitely return !!

Best I’ve had for absolutely ages

Had a takeaway on 12/6/24. Fast, friendly and efficient service. Excellent food, spare ribs best we’ve ever had, in fact the entire meal was absolutely delicious👌🏻. Definitely recommend!!

Nice for eat in or take away. Have had the odd bad dish but the staff have always handled it well. The crispy pork is very good. Worth a look

Always get take away from here but decided to dine in and it was incredible. Amazing customer service, lovely people and great food! Would definitely come here again all staff here are amazing and lovely people and the food was really delicious. Egg fried rice was amazing and I cannot recommend the crispy shredded beef more! So yum! Definitely recommend.

Traveled here from Ipswich, glad we did, one of the best Chinese restaurants I have visited, great food and very friendly staff.

Nothing has been done to the interior of this restaurant since it opened decades ago. Bamboo furniture and hospital lighting. Cheap flooring. No music. No website or online ordering. Nasty curtains and dirty windows hanging above the restaurant Food is great BUT I wouldn’t choose to book a table here due to the aforementioned. It’s a shame because it would be a gold mine if they were to adjust to the 21st century and do a redesign to the interior

Good food, friendly staff. Not too oily on some foods which is great. I think Chinese Chequers is the best Chinese restaurant in Stowmarket. Prawn Crackers should come free though haha

Really disappointing. We drive past the Chinese in our village to drive 20 mins to Chinese Chequers and have done for years. Last night will be our last. Egg fried rice was disgusting, resembled cous cous and no taste. Special curry a rip off, portion size in the new containers is very poor. Overpriced and terrible portion sizes. Egg fried rice was NOT rice !

Went for a birthday meal with my family nice waiter checked on us regularly wide range of delicious foods everyone enjoyed their meal they also do takeaways which are just as nice we went the year before was so nice we had to come back would happily go back

A group of 9 visited for the Sunday buffet for a double Birthday celebration. We requested an additional seat at very short notice which was actioned immediately. The service, friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. The food, plentiful and tasty. A lovely afternoon full of fab company, conversation and celebration with delicious Chinese food. Buffet included starters, mains and desserts. I provided celebratory cakes and candles that came out as requested with candles. Free parking in Stowmarket car parks on Sundays an added bonus. We had our table from midday and left around 14.45. We are all looking forward to another visit and will certainly book again in the future . Thank you for ensuring a surprise get together was a special afternoon out enjoyed by friends and family.

Friendly staff .... wonderful food , even our really fussy kids cleared their plates would definitely return and the Singapore chow mein was the best we have had anywhere

BEST CHINESE EVER - we have eaten in on a couple of occasions but mainly we order take aways. This is the best Chinese food I have had. The service is first rate, the staff are professional, courteous & friendly - they are impeccable actually. Can't recommend Chinese Chequers enough.

The decor is pretty basic and very tired looking however the food is lovely and the service second to none.

Our party of 9 had a family meal yesterday ( Sunday ) and, having called in to have a Noodle bar meal a few days before, checked to find out how they could cope with two persons who would need advice as one Vegan and the other with Lactose intolerance, nothing containing tomatoes and no fresh fruit. Separate meals of ample a proportions and great selection provided especially for them and we had the usual Buffet choice which was great. Very caring and personal attention. Service not found too often but appreciated by us. Also compare prices with others, this is very reasonable. Speak as you find !!

Ordered a takeaway in person at 6.30pm for collection at 8pm. Had to wait for 30 minutes before it was ready! No apology by just said they were busy. 10 minutes delay is acceptable but NOT 30 minutes. Will take my business elsewhere from now on.

The worst Chinese food you could ever get in England. Small portion and overpriced, almost like a joke. We asked for a bit more soup bc the wonton soup was so small and the answer was no. British standard for Chinese food seems so low given the misleading high rating. Not recommended at all if you want proper Chinese food at reasonable price.

Went here sat evening for a meal before i left stowmarket food was awful ku po chicken and chicken in black bean got 4 pieces of small chicken and had fat in it was not worth the money. No atmosphere at all and two glasses of wine £11.60 would never go there again.

We ate dinner before a gig at the John Peel Centre. We ordered bbq ribs chilli prawns king pao chicken Singapore rice noodles and bean curd w veggies. It came out really quickly from the kitchen and all was really unexpectedly delicious. Will def go again. Huge place but quite empty on a Friday night - but don’t worry the chef is fantastic. Run by a cool older Vietnamese guy.

When the lady brought out the sizzling dish she scolded me, my partner and my son. It literally spat hot oil everywhere as she poured it into the other dish and hurt us all. Couldn’t she have done that before bringing it out? Other than that, the food was nice.

We ordered a takeaway from here and when we got home the food was soggy and cold and our chow mein looked like super noodles!! Would not reccomend at all!

Last minute decision to eat in the Restaurant rather than having a takeaway from Chinese Chequers. The service did not disappoint. Food was really delicious and freshly cooked. We were well looked after without being intrusive. Definitely eat in the restaurant again.

Authentic Chinese with great chef. The food is delicious, crisp and fresh. Served by elder Chinese man who was attentive without being intrusive. It’s a no-frills place but in China in my experience, this is the normal, they aren’t show offs so this is how they live. Earlier reviews complained about lack of atmosphere and the wine is perfectly drinkable.

Have used this establishment in the past and this was our first visit in quite a while. Standards are still high, food delicious, service spot on.

Having watched a movie at The Regal we decided to go to Chequers for dinner afterwards. Best decision ever!! The food was really good - and I mean, really good. The spare ribs were lightly crispy, tender and melted in the mouth. The hot and sour soup was just the right balance of tangy and spicy. We then had the sizzling steak (so tender) with black pepper sauce - frankly, the best we’ve ever had - and delicious, delicate prawns in ginger and spring onion sauce. Egg fried rice and noodles with bean sprouts also excellent. Every dish was cooked with care and expertise. Faultless.

Really good Chinese. I’ve order a lot of different dishes off the menu and everything has been delicious. What really makes this place special though, is the super friendly staff. I don’t know how anyone can say the staff are not friendly in here - because this is simply not true. If you want decent Chinese food and decent staff then this is your place! Simply the best around.

The standards have dropped considerably since our last takeaway. Reheated salt & pepper chips, tasteless chow mein and small portions particularly of the prawn balls. Used to be the go to Chinese in the area - we won’t be back

Best Chinese in Stowmarket ....has been consistently good over the years however atmosphere desperately needs some attention.....just turning the lights down and adding some music would be a start!

Me and my wife use this place a lot for takeaways and every now and then for a sit in meal and the food is always a very good standard and the staff are very good it's a lovely Chinese well worth a visit

Although I have lived in Stow for a while it was my 1st visit for a family birthday meal on 13th November that we missed out on last year due to one of the lockdowns !! Food and service was really good and had one of the set meals and particularly liked the pork ribs. I will return to try a takeaway at some point. Thank you.

This restaurant could do so much better. Interior is nothing like a Chinese restaurant and hasn’t changed since it opened decade or so ago, cheap with no character. Wine glasses and cutlery very cheap. Wine is awful, warm and cheap. Restaurant is huge but rarely even a quarter full, I’m not sure how they stay open. No website, or online ordering/booking. No delivery option. Windows above restaurant covered in bed sheets, not a great look. Exterior looking very tired and unloved. Food is good on a normal day but buffet is cheap and salty. Service is good.

I'm sorry the food is so salty !!! We haven't been for a year ..nothing has changed..very little meat in chowmein...ribs are delicious.. the house wine was terrible!!!

Was ok but not fab unfortunately. Singapore rice noodles had so much curry powder in it that it was unpleasant. Spare ribs were cooked nicely but the sauce had a tinge of a brown sauce flavour to them, maybe too vinaigre-y or maybe actual brown sauce! Kung po king prawns tasted ok but wasn't expecting the dish to be 65% water chestnuts. Real shame, might try again at some point but not in a rush to go back.

I have eaten here in the past and the food is always lovely, so imagine my surprise when we ordered take away recently and the chicken chow mien didn't use the normal noodles. They looked and tasted like super noodles. Very disappointed.

This is by far the best Chinese takeaway that we have experienced in Stowmarket. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. The staff are excellent and their COVID precautions are very good. Highly recommended. Try them you won't be disapointed.

Best Chinese I’ve ever had! Food was delicious, full of flavour. Was a bit more pricey than we normally pay but that won’t stop us coming back and this will now be our favourite Friday night take away! We ordered 6 different dishes and all were really tasty. Highly recommend.

My family and I have regularly been going to and getting takeaways from Chinese Chequers since it opened!The food is so delicious and you can tell its authentic. You don't get the gloopy, jelly-like texture that you sometimes get in chinese takeaways. Everything tastes fresh and the staff are amazing! We have been lucky to develop a good relationship with the staff over the years and we've found that regardless of whether you are an old or new customer they will always go the extra mile to make your experience fantastic.

The only chinese to visit. Friendly staff, great food, well priced. Eat in and take away. Unfortunately they dont deliver, but it's well worth the drive to get it. Now set up with separate take away collection area and entrance for dining in. 5 stars easily.

So, I asked them if they had food which are is not sweet and without meat - I think there was at least 7 such options, so I was very happy. I took noodles, chestnut with cashews, spicy fish, prawns, spring rolls, and then vegetables fried with soya sauce and tofu with vegetables. It was a feast! My boyfriend took lots of lamb and other meat dishes. Both of us were in heaven - now I want a Chinese cookbook! The owner(s?) and waiting staff were great and attentive - great example of hospitality. I highly recommend it!
