China Red 2 in Welwyn Hatfield

I was quite disappointed with our experience as a group of four people with a £200 bill. When we asked for dessert, specifically fritters, the owner rudely shouted, "Next time, call to reserve fritters as you were too late." Our table was booked for 8 PM—what time should one book to have dessert? Additionally, the food was watery, consisting mostly of soggy vegetables with very little meat. I can’t help but feel that the patrons who dine here lack an understanding of authentic Chinese cuisine and haven't ventured beyond their familiar surroundings.

We spent £200 for four people, but the kitchen had closed by the time we wanted dessert and fritters. The waitress had gone home, and the chef spent the evening chatting at another table. The food was mediocre—nothing special at all. Save your money and look for a better restaurant.

We visited China Red on Tuesday The 20th August 2024 for Birthday For An Evening meal. On Arrival We Found the Restaurant Nearly Full, When We entered We Were Met By Member Of Staff No Hello Just Took Us To A Table And Just Left. It Took Ages To Get A Drink And Then We Had To Ask For Our Order To Be Taken. It took 20 Mins For Our Starter to Arrive, No One Came To Remove The Dishes After We Finished The Course, Eventually They Did Remove The Dishes. For A Long Time We Waited I Then Asked How Long Do We Have To Wait For The Next Course The Answer Was We Are Very Busy And Short Staffed It Will Come Soon, We Gave it another Few Minutes Still No Sign Of It Coming. I Saw The Manager And Told Her The Service Was Very Poor And Got A Half Hearted Apology. We Just Paid For What We Had And Left. We Will Not Visit This Restaurant Again .

Just not up to its usual high standards. It was very busy and they seemed not to be able to cope with demand. Starters were OK except for the lettuce wraps which were hot and filled with a strange concoction of vegetables in a tastless sauce. Duck was good. Main course took ages to arrive was mixed; sea bass in ginger was excellent but the chicken and prawn dishes were tasteless and in the same sauce as the wrapped vegetables. The noodles were overcooked and dry. No one came to ask if all was OK!

My husband took me here for my birthday dinner and although it was in May I want to write a review. The restaurant itself is not too big but it did have a lovely atmosphere to it we started with spring rolls which my husband enjoyed but they were not quite to my taste we also had seaweed which was delicious and Tempura vegetables were lovely. My husband tried the peppercorn, salt and with Asparagus and aubergine which he enjoyed for our mains we had deep fried vegetable strips in sweet chilli sauce and they were delicious, we also had vegetable chow mean and steamed rice. All in all our dinner was throughly enjoyable and although we live near Bedford we are planning a return visit.

I bought chicken chow mein and vegetable spring rolls from here. The chicken chow mein was nice, but the spring rolls were a letdown. They were overly greasy, to the point where I couldn't finish them. I had to dispose of them, even after attempting to blot the excess oil with a kitchen towel. Customer service was very poor. The person who served me was rushing me and passive-aggressive. It seemed like he didn't want me to be there despite potentially becoming a repeat customer. There was a slight discount for collection, and the food was ready very quickly. Can't see myself coming here again.

Place was packed being mid week, quick pleasant service, but the food was so bland and slightly greasy. As part of our meal was lamb with ginger and spring onion. We both found we couldn’t taste the ginger and the lamb tasted fairly strong as if it was slightly passed its best. The smoked prawn noodles were greasy that it hid the flavour of the prawns. I’ve eaten in there before on several occasions over the years but this time was disappointing as I love Chinese food and was really looking forward to it. I can normally gauge how the food is going to taste by the prawn cracker.

10/10 food and the service was great too, the ladies at the front really helped me out and the chefs deserve a round of applause. Thank you!

The best Chinese I’ve had in years, we came with friends on Saturday night and ordered way to much but couldn’t fault any dish, clean tasting and fresh and not full of msg that I experience at other chinese restaurants just wish you weren’t a 2hour drive from my house

I visited China Red with my friends for dinner and we had a wonderful experience. The restaurant is cosy and elegant, with glass screens that create a sense of privacy. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the service was quick and efficient. The food was delicious and generous. We ordered the Peking duck, which was crispy and tender, and came with pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce. We also tried some of the other dishes, such as the spicy Szechuan chicken, the vegetable noodles and the mixed seafood. Everything was fresh and flavourful, and the portions were large enough to share. We enjoyed the variety and quality of the food, and the prices were reasonable for the amount and quality. We paid £50 per person, which included drinks and desserts. The desserts were also very tasty, especially the chocolate cake and the ice cream. We had a great time at China Red and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice Chinese restaurant in Hatfield. It is one of the best restaurants of its type that we have ever been to. We will be back soon to try more of their dishes. .

On a Sunday night I was driving around the Brookman's (the apostrophe denotes ownership - read a book, Hertfordshire) Park area looking for human misery to feed upon. The usual 4x4 drivers were about. You know the sort - people whose only claim to being satisfactory in this life is having poked a hole in a prophylactic so they could lock down some rich dude and negotiate for a new car through the rationing of marital favours. Nine Inch Nails screamed from my stereo at reckless volume as I drove at a conservative and safe speed past China Red. My counsellor said it was good, once. I parked my automobile in a timely manner, and took my business into this den of inadequacy. Immediately the staff fawned over my lustrous mane and bid me welcome. "SILENCE YOUR SYCOPHANCY," I yelled. "A STEREOPHONIC REPRODUCTION OF TRENT REZNOR AWAITS ATTENTION IN MY VEHICLE OF MAGNIFICENT VINTAGE! YOUR FINEST CHILLI BEEF AND BEEF FRIED NOODLES, POST HASTE!" Their bowing and scraping pleased me. Upon reaching my domicile I discovered, to by immutable, unmittigated horror that I HAD BEEN HOODWINKED. The lid of my chilli beef had been cut. As in, a sizeable chunk had been taken off with a pair of scissors before being secured. As if letting the heat escape from a meal that is to be transported elsewhere is a good idea! I can assure you that it is not. Not that there was much heat to escape, as heat is retained by food and there was not an awful lot in there. About half of that which you'd get from other places. An exorbitant price for a tiny portion that's just been reheated from the asian cash and carry in Enfield. Not joking - you can go there yourself and grab all the deep fried chilli beef you could need. Seriously - try that dish from any two places and note the uniformity (discounting sauces and vegetables). The beef fried noodles had magically transmogrified into beef fried rice. The beef in it was really good, though. Despite the lack of noodles and abundance of rice. To summarise: I AM AGGRIEVED. MYSELF AND MR. REZNOR SHALL PATRON ANOTHER ESTABLISHMENT IN FUTURE!

We thought we would try a new place. Turn out it's Tlthe worst Chinese we have ever had. The salt and chilli chicken was tasteless. The Sechzuan tofu was more chewy than rubber. Lemon chicken was so bitter. And flavourless chowmein.

Amazing food, service and atmosphere. Whether it's eating in or take away - we are never dissapointed! My favourite restaurant by far. I would highly recommend.

Close whenever they want, opening times are irrelevant often Close an hour or 2 early because they’re not too busy, have a bad attitude to customer service. Foods decent, but don’t waste your time driving there and they rarely answer the phone

A great Chinese restaurant All the classic dishes are on the menu and the ones we got were spot on. All the dishes tasted like they had come out of the pan seconds before they were served and the crispy dishes were just right. Food was not greasy and the sauces were nicely balanced and not too sweet. The service was friendly and efficient and the prices are good too. I am looking forward to going back and trying more of the dishes.

Vile restaurant. Rude staff and ‘regulars’. Avoid like the plague! Much nicer and welcoming restaurants around. I wouldn’t even give them one star if possible.

We have been going to China Red since it opened years ago in Brookmans Park. Still think it's the best restaurant of its type. Go. there but book first it's quite small. Does good takeaway too.

My wife and I have travelled to this restaurant on a few occasions from North London. Today we decided to book a table and asked if our table had a space for a pram, in response to my question the lady on the phone paused and proceeded to say ‘ um if your baby cries, can you take them out for a walk to calm them down’. I was speechless as this was the first time any restaurant and even China Red has made such ridiculous terms and conditions when booking a table. I kindly asked the lady to repeat herself as I was left confused, to which she repeated the new term and conditions. I then stated that i have visited the restaurant with my daughter many times and never received any complaints, nor ridiculous T&C. The lady proceed to explain over the Christmas period that they had received many complaints over babies/ children making noise, but emphasised that they are family friendly restaurant. Now are you really a family/ child friendly restaurant if you have specifically stated that if my baby makes one single noise I would have to leave the restaurant, quote “ walk up and down the street” in the cold , dark, winter evening/ night? I am sadden and shocked that you have made such new terms and conditions upon booking. Do you think as a mother , I would let my child scream down a restaurant? In fact in our previous visits to the restaurant you have complimented how well behaved my daughter was. I am disgusted! NOT A CHILD/ FAMILY RESTAURANT. Discrimination at it’s finest.

We visited China Red and were blown away by the wonderful service, lovely atmosphere and amazing, delicious food. The staff are friendly and accommodating, nothing is a problem and the food is fresh and delicious. Since being for a sit down meal we have also been for takeaway a couple of times and the food is just as fresh and delicious. I couldn’t recommend this place high enough.

Mixed feelings for now, will try other dishes and adjust as needed. I went for a take away. I probably should have asked for plastic utensils. The staff should probably asked if I need them. Chicken satay was quite good for a Chinese Restaurant in England. The sauce was noticeably different than what I remember from Malacca's and Georgetown's night markets, but still lightyears closer than typical English understanding of satay. Green thai curry however turned out to be huge disappointment. It was purely, blandly hot. Zero real spices or fishy ingredients you should expect at this price tag.

Have been to China Red a few times. The owner is really nice and friendly. Food is always delicious with good sized portions. Love the salt & pepper squid/prawns! Be warned, book a table because often busy (for a reason). Will be back soon!

Probably the best Chinese food I have ever had in my entire life. Everything about it is amazing, the staff are wonderful and helpful, quality food and all for a good price. They are both a sit in restaurant and a take away which is also very good. I would recommend making a reservation all throughout the week as they do get very busy, even on week days.

Fantastic Restaurant Great Service and Great Food!

Visited here based on a recommendation and had high hopes! Sadly very disappointed! Whilst the food tasted ok, the restaurant was dirty, loud and unwelcoming. Service was awful. We had to wait 20 minutes to get a drink, even then had to ask if we could order, then wait an eternity for our food, despite watching a never ending stream of takeaways going out. The day after we all felt awful and so tired which I can only put down to the vast amount of MSG added to the food. We certainly won’t be visiting again in a hurry.

Me and a couple of friends went to China Red for the first time. The food was loaded with sugar nothing savoury and overpriced for a very small portion. If you were unaware or just lived in the area you would be non the wiser. Just an Awful meal. Disappointing!

Since first reviewing this about 5 years ago we had been visiting fairly regularly up to lockdown. Just returned this evening after a long gap, and we were delighted to find everything is absolutely as good as before. Friendly, efficient, and excellent food. With many of the traditional Chinese restaurants disappearing from the area we hope this one will keep going!

It was our first visit to China Red this evening. Tonight was our first visit to China Red. The friendly staff were cheerful and polite, and they were attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious; we particularly enjoyed the smoked chicken which was included in our hors d’ouevres, but actually the whole meal was great. We were given hot napkins at the end of the meal, which we appreciated and thought was a nice touch. Thank you to all tne staff at China Red for a lovely evening, we’ll definitely be back!

We decided to order a takeaway after a friend recommended. So last night had friends round and ordered 12 different dishes. From Hong Kong chicken, Mixed chow mein, rice, sides, beef in black bean sauce, prawns, chilli beef etc. Every dish was tasty, fresh and by far the best Chinese we have ever had. I am known to be fussy when it comes to takeaways. But it was hot , nothing was greasy and although the price was higher than our local takeaways, it was worth it. Thank you.

Been eating at China reds over the past 15 years . Had take out last week due to recent world virus! . Food was ready to pick up in 20 mins nicely packed . At home unpacked dished up eaten. Fab quality and 95% as good as served in restaurant . Best I've had for take out can't wait to go back in and enjoy in restaurant.

Often visit this restaurant as the food is always delicious. When lazy I get the takeaway which is good. All the food is excellent but I can recommend the prawn dishes and one of the best starters is the salt and pepper chicken wings - wonderful

I Love this restaurant and the food here. I use to be a regular at their old branch in Ware until it closed and have since come here , Usually on Mother's Day . It is further for me to come but always worth the journey! The lady who owns it is SO nice and always remembers me. The service is great and the food comes quickly. They are the best prawn crackers too! My Mum and i shared a lemon chicken, a lamb dish, broccoli in ginger, noodles and bean sprouts and an egg fried rice. Really delicious . Good portion size .. Not greasy. Full of flavor.Value for money! Hope to come again soon!

Went for Valentine’s Day and the food was lovely. We were told when we booked that only a selection of set meals would be available but when we got there they were serving the full menu. Very busy with takeaways too. Good service.

We were invited to this restaurant by friends who have been coming here for years. Though we live near, for no reason, we had never been. First impressions were good. The service was impeccable as was the food. I say first impressions as we were with regulars so I am hoping when we go next time on our own it will be just as good and I will update my review.

I have waited until my fifth visit to rate this restaurant/take away as it is very easy to get carried away with an excellent meal received on a one-off visit, so I can categorically state now that the food and service here is excellent. I have been trying to find a decent Chinese takeaway near to where I live which unfortunately doesn’t exist and so I ventured out as far as Brookmans Park to find this gem. Admittedly there is little by way of parking locally but that’s not the fault of the restaurant, however once inside you are made very welcome if only to select a take away meal. To date I have sampled Kung Po chicken, Singapore noodles, egg fried rice, chicken chow main, smoked chicken, sweet and sour chicken balls, Malay curry, salt and chilli spare ribs and chicken wings, and lemon chicken all of which have been excellent. This restaurant also offers value for money; you may pay a little more than an average Chinese, but the food is not average and the quantity is outstanding for the price. I don’t hesitate in awarding five stars.

Having lived in the village now for 18 months, we regularly eat in and get take away. The food is always consistently good and the staff are friendly, welcoming and accommodating. We have high standards and this genuinely ticks all the boxes.

We've eaten here in the past and have found the food to be delicious, last night was no exception. The food was freshly cooked, hot and enjoyable. We ate the set menu and changed one dish to suit our tastes with no problems. Well worth a visit.
