China Cook in Northumberland

It had been a little while since we had been here so decided to give it a try, really wish we hadn’t . The service was very slow , the restaurant freezing cold and the food very basic . I got the impression it is used more for takeaways now which seemed to keep going out whilst we sat and waited for our food to arrive . Such a shame as it was always a lovey place to go .

Food is absolutely disgusting made me vomit and made my belly turn , far to salty do not recommend

I've used this takeaway for years and only ever had a couple of minor issues with orders but my last visit was horrendous and the reason is I've found out that the place has recently changed hands. The chilli black bean sauce dish was literally like dirty dishwater and the chow mein was tasteless and had no beef or pork and very little chicken in considering it was a house special. We called the takeaway to complain and were offered to choose another dish so we went for a king prawn curry which I had to go back and collect and when we opened this it was disgusting eatered down and tasteless and went down the toilet. Such a shame it's changed hands but whoever is doing the cooking has never cooked a Chinese meal in their lives I'd have added photos but the food was down the toilet quicker than I could get my phone out

Group of us came here no longer do buffet on Wednesday and Sunday. Half of menu not available. Starters came out in stages same with main courses. 2 course meal took 2 1/2 hours. The place was empty used to be rammed. It's definitely gone down hill will not be returning.

Sweet and sour Chicken was very dry and rubbery couldn't eat and chicken curry was loaded with large soggy mushrooms. Spare ribs used to lovely but sauce now very bitter. Massively gone down hill on both taste and quality of food

Takeaway inedible, overcooked, sauces insipid. Part of order missing. After 37 years as a regular customer that is it. Hope the bin enjoyed the food. A place now to be avoided

Very nice atmosphere and great service. Overall dishes are like "western style" chinese food. Mains are not very impressive. But all appetisers are very nice. Crispy dishes were very tasty. All dishes came in big portion. Very much value for money Clean restaurant and nice staffs

Lots of food. And by lots I mean LOTS. Too full to say anything more. It was delicious though, but the chicken could be seasoned a bit more.

So disappointed been ordering here for years, obviously a new chef literally everything we ordered was disgusting and the beef tasted off!

If I could give 0 stars I would. Apparently the new owners fired the kitchen staff thinking they could do it themselves. My egg fried rice had no flavour, tastes like boiled rice. The satay sauce I get now tastes nothing like peanut, more like curry and gravy mixed together, and to put the icing on top of the cake… my fiancés plain vegetable chow mein, had a chunk of what appears to be raw beef in it and she ended up chewing it. Never going back

Just ordered a meal, didn't know it had changed hands, it was absolutely disgusting spare ribs tasted sour, couldn't chew the king prawns in batter and the chow mein was terrible old meat did not taste fresh at all, used to be my favourite chinese, wouldn't recommend

The food here was amazing. Sadly, it's gone that far down hill we won't ever be using the place again. Not sure if it's new owners or a new chef, but either way the food is garbage. It slowly went down hill, and got to the point where we literally couldn't eat it, the worst Chinese I'd ever had. I complained but it fell on deaf ears.

Restaurant has recently changed hands we had the happy hour meal 2 courses for £11.50 food and service was excellent food hot and tasty certainly a big improvement from previous owners I hope people give the new owners their support as this is a real asset to the local area.

Just had Singapore Noodles and Crispy Beef Cantonese and they were amazing. Totally recommend 😀

Worst chinese food I have ever had Special chowmain had next to no meat in it 3 prawns 4 bits of chicken 3 bits of duck and tasteless the ribs tasted funny and looked weird the chicken balls where just balls of batter the curry sauce tasted off the duck fooyung was dry and full of fatty duck skin the spring rolls were OK out of that whole meal costing £60 really not worth the money so disappointing won't be going back there again sorry

Had a number of takeaways from here. Great service,very quick and the food has always been excellent.

horrible my gravy on my food was burnt & when i phoned up about it was told i would get a replacement meal next week,went for it the following weekend would told i would have to pay for the chips as the meal only came with one. side even thought i bought chips and rice which got ruined by the burnt gravy when questioned this the staff were rude and said it was the kitchen manager that said it and there was nothing they could do about it i paid for my chips and left i will not be in a hurry to go back.

Appetisers are 1 per table but does not state on menu, you have to order thing 7 or 8 times before they come out main dishes then wait 20 mins for the rice very poor service food was ok but would never ever return 10 of us went and the whole meal was drinks and drabs not good at all

We went out as a family for a sit in all you can eat buffet from a family members birthday. We waiting 45 mins from our starters for them only to bring half the starters out, prawn cocktail starter was horrible prawns tasted funny & sauce was sour. our main course was cold by the time they bought our chips out which looked like they had been reheated, the whole night was spoilt. The 3 waiter’s did try their best to serve us but the whole place has gone down hill

Never been here for a while, I think it was closed a long time due to covid, decided to try the buffet night There was 4 of us we couldn't fault the food or the service, definitely as good as it used to me. Minor things could be improved when the sauces are served there should be a spoon in the dish as well as the meal courses. Of course we could have asked for a one. We will definitely be going back.

We stayed at the Commisioners Quay Hotel for our 33rd anniversary and walked in to the China Cook Chinese restaurant for an evening meal.We were given a table and picked a set meal for 2 at £17.50 each and ordered 2 drinks .Along came the prawn crackers which we ate while waiting for our meal to begin ,filled by another bowl,3 in total.The food came and went all 4 courses absolutely spot on well cooked and great tasting ,we are good eaters but could not finish it all ,we were offered the leftovers to be boxed to take home .The two girls who worked there were great ,friendly and not overly chatty which I like.At the end of the meal we were offered anniversary present which we could not accept .This meal could not be beaten for the amount of food served,quality and value for money .thanks again

The owner was lovely. I asked if they make this specific Chinese dish and they made it specially for us. It was tasty as well.

I frequently purchase takeaway food from here. Their menu is your fairly standard (British) Chinese menu with all the classics, although a decent seafood selection is welcoming . I'd however say their food is superior to most Chinese food you'd get in Britain - certainly Northumberland. Their chicken soup from appearances seems freshly made from real stock and is one of the better examples of that dish I have tasted. Their meat dishes are all cooked well. Crispiness is the order of the day. I even quite like their sweet and sour/Cantonese sauces which are normally a glutinous mass of sugary syrup in most ''fakeaways''. Not here. There is nothing too authentically quirky on the menu however they get everything they do right. Seem friendly on the phone also and swift delivery. I know they are a restaurant and must visit at some point.

This is hands down my fav chinese takeaway in Blyth. I always like to change it up and order/try new dishes. But you have to start with Chicken & sweetcorn soup! Its a must. The honey & chilli crispy chicken or beef is a personal fav / go to dish as well.

I've been in for a few buffet meals with wife and family. Food is lovey and diverse. The take away I do once a month and is always nice.

Visited with a friend on a Monday evening. Staff disinterested; food was fine but not restaurant standard and took too long to arrive. I suspect this was down to the inattentive staff more than the kitchen. Served by someone in a puffa jacket. We stood up to leave and asked for the bill. No questions asked, just charged for what we ate and waved out. Disappointed and would not return.

Food took over an 1 hour and 15 mins to come which I didn’t mind. When food arrived it was cold and rock solid. Food quality wasn’t great, couldn’t even eat very much due to not wanting to loose my teeth. Wouldn’t recommend unless you want to go to the dentist with toothache.

Monday night visit with a friend. We were the only two in the restaurant. To be clear, food was takeaway.

Fantastic food and good service. Attended as a party of three for the 'All you can eat' buffet and was not disappointed. The venue, once past the slightly unsightly piles of chairs, is well presented but if you are over 5ft tall be cautious about sitting down as the seats are very low. The selection of starters and mains ensure everyone is happy and there is no pressure to rush through your dishes. The staff were very polite and knowledgeable about the dishes. Price is fair but like most establishments you do pay through the roof for soft drinks. Would certainly return. 5*

Went here for my mams birthday on a Sunday night for the buffet . Honestly can’t fault this place, food and service were both amazing

Ordered a Saturday night take away to be delivered. It took an hour to arrive and we must have been the last delivery. The food was stone cold and I had iit up in the microwave. The chips did not take well to this and were almost inedible. Have used China Cook in the past and it was good but don't think we will do so again.

Went for the buffet and just had the starters, amazing duck and pancakes

Order meal at the small front bar. Special fried rice, plenty to eat, with tender beef, king prawn, chicken with a good flavour, served in round tin foil platter. Portion of curry sauce, very tasty. King prawn foo yung, plenty of prawns and nice sold egg, this comes with chips, good or rice. Also a bag of prawn crackers, very good quality. Plenty to eat (some left over for tea). Would definitely recomend, will be back.

Have been to this restaurant before but was so disappointed this time. My daughter ordered chicken curry but could not eat any of the chicken as it's taste and texture was strange so she only are the sauce and rice. I had king prawn garlic which had no taste or colour. I was so d as this was a meal for my birthday treat. Will not be back. Total waste of money. We were the only diners in the restaurant.

The Wednesday and Sunday all you can eat is incredible value for money - cooked fresh to order. I normally never get passed the starters before I'm full! So much choice

Lovely food. Their happy hour menu up to 9pm was a bargain and had loads of choice. Very quiet on a Friday night in the restaurant, though the take away was busy. Nice young staff working front of house.

It's been some time since we visited the China Cook for a sit-in meal and had been looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately, the food could only be described as "average". The Peking Duck wasn't brilliant (quite chewy) and we waited some time for the mains. The young girls who work there are very polite and courteous however the restaurant is not a patch on its' former glory days when it was "The Great Emperor". The carpets leading up the stairs to the toilets are worn away to a shiny finish and your hands actually stick to the bannister rail as it's so dirty. The toilets themselves were marginally better. If this is what it's like in the "front of house", it does cause concern about cleanliness and hygiene behind the scenes?

Just had a delivery which was possibly one of the worst we have ever had. It arrived 1.15 after ordering and was cold and tasteless. Chicken in black pepper had a thin sauce that was bland , although the chicken itself was ok it was cold. Crispy chicken in plum sauce was soggy and no flavour to it - both dishes were binned ! Chips not up to much, only edible thing was the fried rice .Never again

Have always had excellent food from here but just collected a meal for a birthday celebration .... quality of food dreadful .... sweet & sour chicken ..... chicken over cooked & the batter solid burned ...... prawn crackers soft & chewy ..... just not able to go back with it so probably won’t use this place again.

1st time eating here and have to say it wasn't very nice! Curry sauce very oily and lumpy, salt and pepper chicken not very salt and peppery! Fried rice not nice atall! My cat seems to be enjoying it tho!

The restaurant is open from 12 noon to 2 pm we called at 12.30 to book a table for 3 at 1pm and was told no we close at 2 pm. Shame we went else where

Use several times a month never been disappointed and usually answer the phone fairly quickly and from phone call to meal being ready has never been more than 20-30 mins even on busy weekend times

Had a very tasty meal with the family, staff were very attentive and very helpful the children lived the duck starter and the ribs which had lots of meat on them, they cooked the chicken fried rice as we had requested - minus the peas and one of the mains minus the chillies making it spicy but not too hot. There was lots left over which they kindly boxed up for us to take away. The only letdown was the children wanted a 'fantastica' for dessert which they have had before at a different restaurant however this was a homemade version which for £3.20 each wasn't good. I would recommend the restaurant.

Visited here yesterday with family. They have stopped doing a buffet and now you have to order from banquet at just under £15 per head. That would be ok but we all ordered fried rice (7 of us) and only received 1 bowl between us all which I’m almost sure was not 7 portions as there wasn’t really enough to go round. The toilets are somewhat to be desired and need a damm good clean along with the carpet to get there. I don’t know if this place has changed hands but it certainly wasn’t as good as it used to be

Came here with husband, kids and in laws for the mother in law’s birthday yesterday and have to say it was really nice. Only us and one other table there but, given it was a Monday and only 5:30pm, that’s not surprising. I enjoyed the quiet to be honest. Food was lovely and the staff also lovely. I think a little updating is needed but that’s nothing major. Would return again.

Lived in Blyth for four years and had never visited China Cook before. Silly. Absolutely top Chinese food served quickly and all piping hot. Had starter and main and a drink for three people and got change from £30! All good size portions .

Wednesday evening visit with friends to sample the buffet menu and was not disappointed. There was lots of choice in both starter and main courses. You can order what you want for the fixed price. We were a group of three. We ordered four starters between us, ribs, duck with pancakes, prawn toast, and won tons, these were absolutely delicious and cooked freshly. Main courses, we had one each with boiled rice and chips,chicken in black bean sauce, lemon chicken and king prawns in garlic sauce, again simply out of this world, so tasty. The buffet is on Wednesday and Sunday evenings only. Staff really friendly and service great. Bit of a wait but was expected since food is cooked fresh. Would definitely come back for mode of this delicious food

Was tasty but not what I asked for! wanted mushrooms and onion in didn't get either . Delivery man was nice and come in about 20 mins just a shame they didn't take order correct.

Only had a few dishes as just started using this takeaway. Mongolian Chicken is delicous would definitely recommend it.

Place was empty, only two of us in, so no atmosphere. But service was good. Asked for pint of larger and was offered John Smiths.... really!!! please train your bar staff. Prawn crackers were on table, lovely, free and topped up when requested. We had cheese and chicken spring rolls and crispy chilli chicken as starters. Both were very good. Then had squid in garlic sauce which was chewy and cold... not recommended, and morning glory chicken which was excellent and is to be recommended. Portion size was good. Rice very nice. Chips hot dry and crispy., very nice. Two glasses of medium house white wine went well with our meal. Total cost £45. Not the cheapest night out but I enjoyed it and would return, although my partner would not wish to rush back.

Went here for my husband's birthday for the buffet meal and it was really good. It was very busy and we didn't book but they found us a table. Service was very friendly and quick. We ordered a few starters and they were very good same with the main courses. We had our three year old with us and they didn't charge for him. Will be going back for another meal.

On a quiet Tuesday, I was the only diner fora relatively early sitting. Attention adequate, portion sizes HUGE, that's lunch sorted for next day...and tasty too. Take away counter really busy

Although they were doing a lively take away trade we were the only eat in customers. The set meal was really good, and filling. The service was efficient, and I liked getting warm wipes after each course.

Went with family and enjoyed £14.50 set meal for 3.Food all freshly cooked and looked and tasted great.Very good portions and value for money. However not much atmosphere on the night, and owners small children sitting nearby playing games on tablets by themselves which was a bit noisy and annoying.

Visited here tonight for my husbands birthday. We were a party of 4 and went for a set menu at £14.50 a head. The soup and duck were gorgeous and portion sizes very good. We ordered 4 separate main courses and the servers pointed out that we could choose any mains from the menu and not just what was listed on the banquet menu! During our visit the hygiene inspector landed unannounced on a general inspection visit, and not due to any concerns or complaints I must stress! As the place was quiet when she arrived we could hear her asking questions of the front of house staff who coped without any sign of stress, they answered all questions open and honestly and with excellent knowledge of health and safety and hygiene procedures, how to handle allergies and showed true professionalism. I do hope the staff get to see this as they are all so friendly and helpful and are a credit to the restaurant. Often get take always from here and it's the best around this area.
