Popped in for lunch and we both chose the senior citizen mince, tattles and tea or coffee. £6.50 each, so not particularly cheap. Long wait for the meals and certainly looked terribly unappetising when they finally did arrive. The tattles were obviously of an instant variety and the mince must have been the cheapest on the market. No taste whatever from the mince other than being overwhelmed with onions. Quite why you would require a gravy boat with this meal is bewildering. We both only managed a few mouthfuls and left the rest. This was absolutely the worst meal I have ever had. We have both suffered mediocre meals n the past but this was in a league of its own.

The staff are very friendly and the service was good. I also noticed that they cater for special dietary needs, which is a bonus. I would visit this café again, but I didn't give 5 stars because I feel there are areas for improvement. My friend and I ordered egg and chips, which was quite nice apart from the portion of chips being a bit on the small side and one of my eggs being slightly undercooked. However, the eggs were obviously free-range, which made a huge difference. Not exactly cheap either, but overall it wasn't a bad dining experience.

Went for lunch and ordered toastie and a piece of cake each. Went in at 1.05pm. There were 4 tables with 2 at each. 2 of them came in after us and they were served first. Unfortunately just after 1.40 I went and had to wait a few minutes as they were all in the kitchen until the waiter came out and asked if we could get them as a take-away as I had to get back to work. That was after 40 minutes! He said yes we can do that! Not very impressed. They boxed it all up. A lady came through with it and said sorry darling we've not charged you for the cakes. Nice of them but it rather spoilt my birthday lunch. Had to race back to work and eat it quickly. Shame. Ok if you have plenty time.

Chimes is easy to find, and free parking is available close by in front of the next block of shops. On the flat, it is wheelchair accessible. Staff were pleasant, but didn't seem to know what they were doing. We were a big group, but not sure why that should be a problem. Half an hour after we had finished our desert, the rest of the group hadn't even been asked if they wanted any. Hard wooden seats, but there is a couple of padded window seats. If they weren't available, would not have been able to stay.Had the vegetarian burger, which was sweetcorn based. It was nice, and came with salad, but had no dressing on it. Finished with a chocolate muffin, which was ok, but a bit dry. May try it again, if any comfortable seating is available.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Recently moving to the area we had a quick survey of the high street and liked the look of Chimes, we popped in and were taken away yet again by the large blackboard menu with everything we needed to know. Wi-Fi? Yes and here is the password, take away? Yes have a menu. Everything spelled out.Taking a seat the only bad point I would say is I can’t see four people managing to sit and eat comfortably round one table despite four chairs at most. Other than that decor and atmosphere were great. After a short time we had just decided on our order when we were very politely and professionally asked if we were ready to order. We took the Steak and Haggis burger along with the Chicken Pesto pasta with crusty bread, a latte and a soy Oreo milkshake. The milkshake bringing me to a point. This place is very inclusive. Vegan, gluten free and reduced calorie options alongside availability of soy milk. All of which for not additional charge. I never picked any of these options but it still made me feel very welcome and cared for. One star was that after ordering the soy milkshake the waiter double checked it was ok to put normal ice cream in.It wasn’t very long before we had our drinks and spotted the lovely big cake and tea stand to the back. Having them all on display but under glass covers was a great move. Both drinks I couldn’t fault though I would have preferred to have seen through the glass for the milkshake that’s just personal preference. The food not only looked and smelled great but tasted it too. The burger was beefy and the haggis subtle, I would have preferred it a bit more textured so you really knew the haggis was in there but each to their own. Plenty of Bacon and cheese added on. A tasty bun, nice side salad though no dressing and a good portion of crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle chips; filling and tasty. The pasta gave me some mixed feelings. Although not specified on the menu when I think of pesto pasta I think creamy green sauce, a kick of pesto not just a touch. That’s not what came out to the table. I got my pasta and I could taste some pesto but it was more of a broth. I’d never seen pesto pasta like it. Now don’t get me wrong, it was delicious. The pasta cooked perfectly and it had absorbed the flavor and the flavor it absorbed was great. I could have had a bowl of just the broth as a soup happily. But I never ordered pasta soup. The crusty bread was delicious too, perfectly complimented the broth. I ordered the pasta to fill me up, I was very hungry and it’s a heavy meal I expected so I was disappointed by that and left still hungry but I can’t fault the taste. All in all we had a good time, enjoyed the food and can’t fault the service. I had my small disappointments but that was all personal preference and it didn’t break the bank either.

Just to start with the look of this place is just right, not too “posh” not too “cheap caff” just right. It hits for me that medium spot of good quality food with good service but nothing “too fancy”. So what does it look like? Try a black board wall with the full menu in clear to see text all spelled out for you with prices. Plenty of room to move about and chairs that should really have been less comfy that they were looking at them. What’s on that menu? Everything. I think you’d be hard pushed to not find a large chunk of it you’d enjoy. One thing I will point out is a large range of vegetarian and gluten free options clearly pointed out (even the all day breakfast) to top it all off the array of cakes on display is great. All nice and fresh with at least eight or nine different options. If you end up going often and start to get sick of the same old 30 odd choices of foods you’re in luck. They have a seasonal selection menu.So our experience included a steak and haggis burger, BBQ chicken toastie (both with chips on the side, a large coffee and pit of tea and two soft serve ice creams. For £18 I was quite happy with that. Couldn't fault the service and the food was great, the only thing knocking this down to a four star was the BBQ chicken. Honestly it could have been mayo chicken put on the wrong plate if it wasn't for the tiny touch of a BBQ sauce. Don’t get me wrong it was still nice, nice but not enough of a BBQ taste.I know we’ll be back regularly and I get the feeling this may be a one of mistake, I expect if we’d asked the staff they could have done something to help with it but we were just as happy with what we had and the staff were visibly busy.

They have an extensive menu, written on chalk boards on the back wall, I recommend that you carefully position yourself so that you can see all of it! There are a number of healthy options and there are quite a few gluten free meals and treats, which is commendable on all fronts. The portions were good and the prices were very reasonable. The staff were very friendly and the service was quick but not at all rushed. It seems to be popular with locals and there were a number of regulars in whilst we were having lunch, but we didn't feel uncomfortable or like outsiders at all, which has been the case in other places that we have visited.
