Schottische Tradition pur!

Have wanted to come here for a long time - what a disappointment- not family run now and you can tell it’s a business only.food was Nice , staff just doing their job , no friendly manner- perhaps the only native was the restaurant manager and he was flustered when we arrived. The potholes at the front were shocking- this was in January!…. This is my third attempt at writing this and no I cannot recommend. It’s needs a good clean and had its day!

Lovely lunch at the Chez Roux Restaurant inside Greywalls Country House Hotel. For starters 2 of us had tomato soup and the other 2 Scotch broth with beautiful crusty bread. To follow, I had Seafood Fish Pie (absolutely delicious), one family member had the salmon and the others roast chicken. They all said it was all so tasty. Everything was perfectly cooked and arrived quickly. There were plenty of vegetables and although we were tempted to have a desert, we were all full. Chez Roux is a really quaint place and the surrounding gardens are so beautiful and is surrounded by the "world famous" Muirfield Golf Course. Unfortunately, due to the weather (so much rain and wind), I didn't take any photos of the outside. ( I hope one day to come back in nicer weather). Even though we hadn't pre-booked, the very attentive staff must of seen us parking and came out with umbrellas so that we didn't get wet. There are 3 dining areas and a lovely library with a baby grand piano which they very kindly allowed me to play. Throughout, the restaurant rooms there are loads of memorabilia from "days gone by" eg. a working gramophone, antiques and books and pictures. Ah, it was all so lovely

A lunch for 6 where 3 of us ordered the roast pork. The roast was dreadful. More fat than meat and the yorkshire puddings were like greasy cardboard. We had mistakenly expected that a restaurant of this standard would offer a perfect roast lunch. How wrong we were! The 3 other meals were fine. We have had many memorable meals at Greywalls over a 35 year period all of which have been delicious. Buck your ides up Chez Roux you have a lot to live up to and a LOT to improve.

We dropped in at Greywalls on a sunny Saturday lunchtime for a light lunch and to enjoy the gardens. We opted for the pasta of the day, which was penne in blue cheese sauce with broccoli. It was a simple dish superbly cooked, whilst the service was impeccable; very efficient and friendly without being stuffy. We took the opportunity to sit outside to enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful gardens. All in all an exquisite lunchtime.

We visited on a rainy Sunday lunchtime. We were met by a member of staff armed with an umbrella to assist from the car park into the magnificent building. The service was first class throughout our experience. The food, despite being from the ‘bar menu’ was excellent and reasonably priced. We opted for the four course tasting menu which was more like a hot afternoon tea with four dishes on a large plate. Soup, fish, main and sweet. Absolutely lovely and more than enough food to leave satisfied. An amazing food experience. Thank you Chez Roux.

Having eaten at Greywalls on many occasions we looked forward to visiting again for a birthday lunch. What a disappointment it was. From the outset the grounds were not maintained to their previous high standard. We had a drink in the garden sun which was fine. The menus arrived and we were amazed to find that it was more suited to a pub lunch than a high end hotel. We opted to eat in the dining room where only one other table was occupied. Prices seemed high for what was on offer. One of our party was gluten free as we had advised in advance. We had to remind them of this. She chose the burger which arrived between two slices of bog standard gluten free bread with no attempt made at presentation. On the plate sat a pan with some leaves in it. No dressing. This was supposed to be a salad we presume. Also on the plate was a "stack " of six chips which were far from crisp. My wife chose the Four Seasons quiche which turned out to be another very large slice of tasteless egg. It also had the pan with the bare leaves but no chips. I had chosen the shepherds pie which was ok other than it somewhat unusually seemed to have been made with tomato. No bread was offered nor were we asked if we would like wine. When the waitress asked if our meal was ok i told her that it was very poor. She apologised and said she would tell her manager. She returned to say that the manager was going to"do something " for us - suffice to say he never appeared. We decided not top have a sweet as from the experience so far we thought that ice cream at £12 was unlikely to be value for money.I cannot believe that the great Albert Roux would find any of this to be acceptable far less of a standard he would have associated with his name and reputation.

We drove from the Borders to Greywalls as we wanted to eat there while 'nearby'. Some great sunset views over the east coast on the way up, we managed to see the Muirfield views just before darkness.Finding Greywalls is easy and there's plenty of parking. We were shown through to the library for drinks, (Please Remember Scotland has a different drink drive law to England), which appeared promptly and we were very comfortable there, despite the restaurant clearly being booked up that evening and plenty of people arriving for pre dinner drinks. The menu had plenty to choose from, the cod was a great choice and generous portion also the venison was tasty, perhaps a slightly larger portion would have been better, as it was moreish. The wine list was good with some refreshingly alternative options included along with the usual safer choices.Overall the food was excellent and the staff/service was flawless.Well worth driving over an hour each way to eat at Greywalls.

My husband and i ate dinner at the restaurant last night and it was average. We were shown to the library before the meal but it was pretty much full and the only 2 seats were a few meters apart - not great for conversation! Then, when I asked if they offered any non-alcoholic drinks, I was told they could give me coke or fruit juice... not exactly what I’m after when out for dinner. I found this particularly disappointing (especially in Scotland with zero-tolerance policy) as there are a number or excellent non-alcoholic spirits and wines on the market nowadays. Later on during the meal, when my husband requested the wine list, it stated that they did in fact offer a non-alcoholic beer but this wasn’t told to me when I asked which was a shame. The Al a Carte menu / set menu was ok but not especially exciting, and then, when the d’oeuvres arrived there was literally a cherry tomato and mozarrela ball on a cocktail stick! Not exactly exciting or “restaurant standard” food - more like kids birthday party. When shown to our table, the waiter picked up my glass by the rim which is a big no-no for me. The food and service in general was pretty good although the pea veloute starter I had was almost cold. I probably wouldn’t rush back.

As ever, the hospitality and ambience at Greywalls proved to be second-to-none. Lunch too was great, although we were there on the first day of a new abbreviated lunchtime menu that harks back to bar-food and snacks rather than the full three courser to which we have become happily accustomed. I feel that this is a mistake. Sure, offer this style of service in the bar, but please provide a pukka lunchtime service for those wanting to sit down for a couple of hours. The food itself was great - no doubt about it - and the 4 course tasting plate option was an interesting offer (served mezze or thali-style on one large platter - meaning that the dessert has to be wrapped in tissue to keep it warm, or the entire meal has to be wolfed down sharpish - the option I chose). Service was as bright and friendly as ever although there was some uncertainty - on this opening day - regarding the precise nature of the plates on offer. It is plain to see why Greywalls has decided to adopt this course: It smacks of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Perhaps, in time, I will come to love it but I can't deny a hankering for the traditional regime - and a good digestif!Thankyou for yet another lovely afternoon Greywalls. I hope you won't mind my offering an opinion.

We had a family Sunday lunch here. Greeted at door and as we were early, waited in library. Such a nice way to start and relax rather than charging in. Canapés were tasty. The maitre d was excellent and attentive. Food was traditional rather than contemporary but was classy, both in construction and cooking. Liked that the meat and supporting elements we proportionate rather than the danger of huge helpings designed to please with quantity over quality in some other places. After dessert we had coffee back in lounge which was a great way to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and digest. In Summer the beautiful gardens are worth a stroll. So I would happily recommend if you let yourself relax into it. It is traditional and it could be argued that some menu elements could be contemporised but this is conform and tradition with a touch of Franci Scots.

Great staff who are there but not there (i.e. They're not in your space all the time). Beef tartare is best I've ever had. I liked the time between courses; some establishments rush this. Lovely old lounge to "lounge" in and it was fun watching the golfers duffing it on the Muirfield course (as an ex golfer I sympathised). From the aperitif of champagne through to the lunch, this was an excellent choice of venue for a birthday celebration. It was possible to mix and match the table d'hote and the a la carte menues. Spoiled for choice from the good selection of locally sourced produce. Amuse bouche in the library then, as an example, Albert Roux soufflé Suisse for a starter which was a delight of cheesy softness. The main of sole was perfectly cooked with brown shrimp and potato rosti accompaniment. Fellow diners managed desert (fresh warm bread a fatal temptation on arrival at the table!) Coffee and petit fours back in the library followed by a walk in the attractive gardens. Quiet as a Tuesday however staff did not rush us and ensured we were well attended throughout.

Very easy to make reservations. Drinks are scheduled 30 minutes before your reservation. We decided to take part in the prefix menu included in our room rate. The staff would have allowed us to order anything and alter our dinner as requested (of course with a reasonable up charge). Food quality was AMAZING. Presentation was top notch. The second night of our stay my husband requested a specific table, for some reason we were seated somewhere else but we were happier with our table. The maitre d' right away was going to switch our seat and seemed willing to do anything to make us happy. We were happy with our decision to stay at our table. Staff was ridiculously attentive. I felt as though we were the only people there! We live in Chicago, we are used to great food and service... and loud restaurants. This place is great! Great food, and amazing service as previously stated. AND QUIET! What a nice change. We decided to take dessert in the library and were happily taken to a quiet romantic seat by the fire. We booked for our 10th wedding anniversary (29 Sept) and invited three friends: two had dined there before with mixed experiences. But, we wanted a venue where we could dress up for our special occasion so we booked undeterred. We needn't have bothered with the sartorial effort as most of the American guests certainly hadn't!The staff were the best thing about the evening. Friendly without being obsequious and the right side of 'attentive' and not intrusive. Unfortunately, the food was a big let down. Two of the party were vegetarians and, before booking, we'd looked online to find a fairly good separate veggie menu. The veggie menu wasn't initially offered to us, so we asked for it, only to find it simply repeated the vegetarian options printed on the main menu! None of the dishes found online were available. A bit bizarre. The duck, described by two of the diners, was tough but it was the two vegetarian dishes that were really abysmal. Mushroom Fricassee was a quenelle of mushroom paté served on 3 baby carrots, two leeks and half a dozen other field mushrooms in an oily dressing. The other veggie plate was a small 'Greggs' like puff pastry affair, topped with cheese and a repeat of the scant roast vegetables. The company was great, the wine was lovely and a nice touch of petit fours served with an iced "Happy Anniverasy" [sic] plate was thoughtful (despite the spelling). The decor is a little run down and it seems like Greywalls is simply happy to cater for Americans who have little taste but plenty of cash. I wouldn't rush back to part with over £300 for a pretty poor dinner actually.

We chose this restaurant for our 50th wedding anniversary as we were married close by in Nth Berwick. The initial impression of the restaurant and setting was excellent. Our table was perfect and overlooked the golf course. We were given the menu and wine list and my wife requested a vegetarian option which was on a separate menu, but with limited choice. We chose our wine from the list but was informed that it was not available so we chose another recommended by the waiter. The wine was acceptable but not the one we wanted. The description of my starter, a seafood concoction, was detailed and very long - unfortunately the dish itself was minuscule and consequently difficult to judge whether it was good or not . My wife's starter was a cheese souffle and excellent. I chose duck breast for the main course and requested that it was just pink. I was assured it would be. The dish arrived with two very rare slabs of meat on something - it looked and tasted awful. My wife ordered a cheese gnocchi with a poached hen's yolk. Luckily we had the description otherwise we would have had no idea what it was. The dish was most unattractive and could not be described as a 'main' course. She left most of it, the little there was, as it was just unappetizing. For pudding I chose a lemon tart which was very good and my wife had a selection of cheeses to make up for her awful main course. The cheeses were very acceptable. We did not stay for coffee or after dinner drinks as we just wanted to leave. Our overall impression therefore was of extreme disappointment. We were looking forward to an excellent dinner to celebrate our anniversary and the evening was ruined. We have eaten in the Roux restaurant in Bray and that was, as it should be, very good. Luckily the following evening we went to a 'pop up' restaurant in a delicatessen in Nth Berwick and the complete meal for both of us was truly excellent. We would not return to Grey walls.

Two of us chose the strawberry crumble soufflé for desert which was one of the tastiest I'd ever eaten. Had a lovely lunch here in a stunning building in a beautiful setting at Muirfield. Great value lunch menu & a la carte is not much more, depending on your choices. With the Roux family pedigree in the kitchen, you can expect French classics like my starter, quenelles of pike in a shellfish & lobster veloute. Stunning. Some dishes are better than others but the standard is pretty high. They clearly have an expert pastry chef in the kitchen as my lemon tart was also superb. Front of house staff were nice & very professional too. One one issue but I was aware of it before booking. The 12% non-discretionary service charge. Not common practice in Scotland for tables of 6 or less but typically a 'London' thing. Taking the tip for granted no matter how good the food & service is is just plain wrong. I normally leave at least 10% for good food but I leave a cash tip to ensure it goes direct to the staff & not through the till system. It's just a major issue for me. Still. I would definitely recommend & re-visit as the overall experience was delightful.

Greywalls is the place where many of the big players have stayed when the Open has been at Muirfield (wonder when that will happen again...) and it has always served good food, perhaps not always open to the public in the form it is today. If you have dedicated golfers in your party, make sure to take the time to look at the photos pinned to some of the walls. Sadly, some of the staff are probably not golfers at least not very familiar with the history of the place so make sure you ask around until you find someone who can tell some real war stories.

It's a Roux restaurant. Need I say more. The standards are the highest, the food is sourced perfectly, the cooking is wonderful and and the whole experience is very, very pleasant. If I look hard and try to find fault, it would be the dining room. It's slightly tired and a bit dated, still nice but could be better. The rest of the hotel is delightful.

First visit to Greywalls and the Chez Roux restaurant and we were both very impressed with the quality of the food and value for money from such a prestigious establishment. We both had the trout followed by the beef and portions were just right and flavours just complimented each other brilliantly. Chez Roux is one of those intimidating places where you can hear the clink of the silverware on the plate because everyone speaks in hushed tones and eats quietly. Not much atmosphere and the food is over rated. My wife had the hake which she said had no taste, I had the puff pastry stuffed with game, it was ok but nothing special. Stay at the hotel but there are plenty of other fun and interesting places to eat in North Berwick. Pretty disappointing.

I chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner this year - firstly because it's within walking distance from my home and because it has a Michel Roux label on it.The food was disappointing overall for a restaurant of this standing. The starters were fine - I had a salad of French beans and tomatoes with quail's eggs and crab croutons and my partner Em has courgette and basil soup. We both had coley with risotto as a main course. This consisted of a piece of fish on top of a sea of risotto. I had mine without chorizo but Em had it with chorizo which was uncooked and overpowered the rest of the dish. She ate the fish and left almost all the risotto. Despite this no one inquired why she had left so much of her main course. It was a very disappointing dish for a Michel Roux restaurant. We both had poached pear which was fine although served cold as if straight out the fridge.I then ordered a double expresso and Em an americano coffee with both turning out to be exactly the same. When asked if "everything was alright" I indicated that it was ok ... "Only ok?" was the response. Yes, disappointing I replied. And that indeed was the end of our conversation. The service in the restaurant was delivered by two youngsters - fairly efficient but a little inexperienced. Finally, we were left in an empty dining room after paying and on leaving had to hunt for someone to retrieve Em's jacket. Last year i had my birthday dinner in Gordon Ramsay's Bread Kitchen restaurant in London which was significantly better than this experience. Very sad since we had very high hopes for the evening and because the restaurant is on my door step.

Really relaxed food and service. We stayed there so it was an unexpected treat in this Sir Edward Luytens hotel that is more like staying at rich friends. Really rich friends. The Sultan of Brunei takes over the whole place and put in his own putting practice green, since it is adjacent to a famous golf course, Muirfield. You can't play there unless you have an approved handicap.

Since many years back, GreyWalls restaurant has been a beacon of culinary excellence . Now under the legendary hand of Albert Roux it still maintains a high standard of culinary excellence and ensures that a visit there will result in a meal to remember. The ambiance of Edward Lutchyns Greywalls and the Gertrude Jekyll gardens in which it sits , compliment the elegant dining room . The food is generally of a high standard and always a tasteful experience . I did however feel this year that some of the service niceties were not being maintained and that the cost of a set menu lunch, makes one think twice about enjoying its delights

I have wanted to visit Greywalls for years but various hurdles have stopped me including that the restaurant has often been full. I can see why. It is a wonderful building and feels more like a family home (which it of course it was) rather than an hotel. As such it isn't as easy as a modern hotel if you are disabled but they easily coped with my needs. We decided to select a main course and pud from the a la carte menu, which was much more enticing than the online sample menu, rather than the 3 course lunch menu. The canape was warm leek and tiny prawn soup with a choux pastry filled with a cheese sauce. All the dishes were full of flavour, interesting textures and beautifully presented, exactly what you would expect from fine dining. The only reason I have given 4 rather than 5 stars was that while the service was good, I was a little shocked that the waitress piled up the dishes in 2s in front of us and leaned over us to take away the napkin rings. When we asked her what roasted crones were, not only did she not know but didn't offer to find out. However this was just one person who as she didn't seem local, may leave soon. I wouldn't like the restaurant to be condemned just because of her but closer supervision would be an idea. I would definitely recommend it and hope to return.

I write as a fan of both Greywalls and Albert Roux. We took 2 friends here for lunch on Sunday - their first visit to Greywalls and they were impressed. As always, we enjoyed ourselves - excellent food and pleasant surroundings. However, there are some areas, all around the service, that need attention:- path to front door should be swept - had lots of small stones on it- lack of welcome on arrival - lots of staff seemingly moving about their business very quickly. Ambience makes Greywalls - I would suggest you quit the rush - guests are not usually in a hurry when they are at Greywalls, so the staff should slow down and ensure they are greeting the guests properly- there was a young woman in the entrance area who did not seem to have a grasp of English - suggest that only people who are fluent in English should be front of house dealing directly with guests- we had to hang around at the end waiting for our coats, whilst once again lots of staff were rushing around past us.I would appreciate contact from the General Manager as there are other suggestions I can offer to improve service at Greywalls. We live very near and are frequent visitors so really want to see the Greywalls experience be as good as it can be.

The food - very good, I'm no fine dinning expert but to me the food was really good, right sized sized portions at, while not cheap, what I would say are reasonable prices. Certainly the set menus were very good value. Very nice atmosphere in the dinning room and a great library for drinks and coffees, although they need to give the poor old cushions a break, they were plumped up within an inch of exploding.... All in all I would have no hesitation in recommending!

i have often thought that the quality of an 'amuse bouche' gives an accurate indication of the meal to come. Here it was sublime- a light Brie cream sandwiched between leaves of delicate pastry and topped with olive pieces and black pepper corns. Nowhere did the surprisingly modest set lunch price compromise the food quality which resulted in one of the best meals I have ever eaten in a Scottish restaurant. My main course of braised skate on a bed of puy lentils flavoured with bacon and white parsnip was beautiful - tasty and well presented. The desert of prune pieces in Armagnac syrup with 'pain perdue' - discs of aromatic baked bread fruit mix was superb. We completed our meal with coffee and petit fours in the library. Every component from bread to our opening ' Kir' had that feeling of being carefully chosen to compliment the meal. Service was polite fast and efficient . What more can I say .

A short drive along the small lane off the A198, you turn into a driveway at the head of which is a charming Arts and Crafts style house. But on approaching the house, the driveway continues through a walled entrance and the rest of Greywalls awaits you. And what a glorious spectacle it is.I've read other reviews where people have griped about some aspect of the property. One of my gripes is that folk fail to comprehend that not all buildings can accommodate contemporary demands because of their historical relevance and value to society. So for your own sake, to avoid disappointing yourself, do bear in mind:1 Greywalls was built in 1901 by one of the finest British architects, Edwin Lutyens and is the ONLY sole surviving Lutyens house in Scotland today. How fantastic that it's here, and we can see/visit/stay/enjoy it?2 Because of its historical significance, it is a grade A-listed building so you can't just knock chunks out of it. It HAS to remain a " fine little-altered example of some particular period, style or building type".3 In a book about Lutyens designs, Greywalls was described as 'a small, albeit dignified, holiday home' and so it is, even today. This was our first visit to Greywalls, and was a treat to celebrate my birthday. We were immediately greeted on arrival and shown through to the library with a fantastic log fire to welcome us. Seated, we surveyed the menu over a pre-dinner drink and delicious canapes. A wonderful selection of fish, meat and game as you would expect in a country hotel so intrinsically linked to golf. We opted for a tasty leek and potato soup with scallop tortellini followed by Pavé of Scottish Beef, Braised Ox Tail Pastilla, Smoked Garlic Mash, Spinach, wild mushroom. Dessert was Lemon tart, with grapefruit and ginger sorbet, Italian meringue and another ingredient I forgot to list! The staff serving us were true professionals but still managed to be friendly and helpful. After dining, we sat by another fire in a fine pair of Lutyens designed Napoleon chairs (exact replicas) surrounded by furnishings in keeping with the period and interesting antiques, for coffee and homemade sweets (inc passion fruit jellies, yum). This had been a delightful, relaxing evening which felt more as though we'd been to someone's house than formal dining. Gorgeous.

Our family group of 4 guys were playing Muirfield and staying for lunch in the dining room.since Muirfield does. Of permit women in their clubhouse, let alone their dining room, I was on my own for about 8 hours. As I left the club I noticed a small, beautiful hotel directly next to Muirfield's gate called Greywall. The hotel advertised a restaurant, so after kicking around several small towns, I stopped in. I am so glad I did! We have eaten in many fine restaurants, and in some of France's finest... And Chez Roux takes 2nd seat to no one. I treated myself to lunch in the dining room- which overlooks the 18th hole of Muirfield. The meal started with 2 amuse bouches- salmon with cream and a haggis ball. I must admit that neither initially appealled to me when identified... But I tried each and they were amazing. Everyone wanting to try haggis should eat the tasty morsel prepared by this chef... And I hate salmon, but this bite was delicious . I had the cheese soufflé as a starter and it was heavenly. I wish I had been able to get the recipe. For a main I had ribeye steak, a potato gratin, creamed spinach, and haricot verts tied by prosciutto . It was divine. I was too full for dessert but they brought 2 truffles, 2 jellies and 2 mini Madelines as a gift from the chef. In addition to serving dinner, the hotel also serves a high tea in a beautiful walled garden...it was quite beautiful. I was lucky to stumble on this gem.the service was excellent and the food memorable.mdo yourself a favor and visit,

We had a delightful lunch at East Coast Musselburgh today, choosing from their set menu. The restaurant is clean, contemporary, and tastefully decorated, which created a welcoming atmosphere. We both started with the mussels in a spicy tomato sauce that also served as a flavorful broth. The sauce had the perfect balance of heat and richness, complementing the fresh mussels. For mains, I opted for the Spaghetti Harbour, which was generously portioned and packed with clams and mussels. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the dish was hearty yet refined. My wife had the King Prawn Calamari, which was served with a light, perfectly cooked batter, accompanied by crispy skinny fries, a fresh salad, and tartare sauce. She loved the combination of flavors and textures. We washed everything down with a refreshing Leith draught beer, which rounded off our meal perfectly. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The facilities were well-maintained, including spotless toilets, which is always a good sign. Overall, the meal was excellent value for money, and we left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend East Coast for anyone looking for fresh seafood and a great dining experience in Musselburgh.

Went here today for a birthday meal What a total and utter disappointment the quality of the food was very poor. I would have rated it no stars but had to give at least one to continue with the review. The meal I ordered was billed as a triple steak burger, OMG it was awful, when it was served to me the burger was bone dry and very small, over cooked and totally tasteless. There was no burger sauce, (what we were offered was a bottle of ketchup and seriously watered down mayo) there was no onion or cheese only a little piece of stale lettuce and one slice of very thin tomato in the very dry bun. It was listed as being served with rustic chips but I actual found they were nothing more than a handful of frozen skinny fries from a bag. I was charged almost £17 for this which is an absolute disgrace. I've had far better any tastier burgers from McDonald's for a third of the price. My partner had what was billed as peppered chicken which was very poor, served in a skillet which was no deeper than a saucer and it was served without rice which was listed on the menu. The manager came over before it was served and gave her a spoon and we were wondering why you would need a spoon to eat the meal! Then It became apparent when it was served, hardly any chicken and a few bits of pepper and onion and was swimming in some kind of peppered sauce, hence the spoon. This was also priced around £16/17, again ridiculously over priced for what was actually offered. We checked out the menu online before booking a table but when we arrived we were given a totally different menu from what was online. Then to top it all we paid cash and after some time we had to ask for our change from the bill (over £5). When the ki Manager came over he then said "folk normally say just to keep the change " we were Shocked and utterly embarrassed by this comment. What an absolute rip off this place is and we certainly won't be back .
