Have been meaning to do this for a long time. To begin, the food and beer were spot on, but it's the staff who deserve a mention. Went there with my wife and in - laws. My father in -law suffered from dementia and the patience shown by the staff was commendable, they did scampi for him and it wasn't even on the menu. Nice pub too.

Visited last night and it was great. Excellent vegetarian choices for main dishes and pies. Pie made to order, took 40 minutes, and was a good eat. Meat dishes were also well received. No Belgian beers, so had to have cider, which was nice too. Very friendly. Get there early for a table by the fire. Not cheap, but then good food shouldn't be.

Despite the very long but expected wait for the cooked to order pies, we really liked this place. The woman who served us was really welcoming and a genuinely lovely person with a flair for what she does, which is just about everything - serving drinks and food, taking food orders, tidying away, tending the open fire... and she stays chirpy and calm throughout. The bar is a cosy place with a friendly, homely atmosphere. The pies are heaven itself. The premises could do with a good tidy - you enter via the back door into a hallway, which could be very attractive if there wasn't cleaning stuff, a vacuum cleaner and other clutter around, and the outside seating area needs weeding and decluttering. But none of that really mattered in the end and I really enjoyed my trip there.

We have been her on a few occasions over the last few months and have allways received a warm friendly welcome from the team there. There is a good selection of delicious home made pies to choose from and after sampling a different pie with each visit I have yet to be disappointed. I recommend that you pre order, we do as the pies are all freshly made to order and can take upto 40 minutes to cook. But the wait is well worth it. We will definitely be returning soon.

Have finally managed to get to this absolute gem! A small country pub in a quiet village but with a welcome as warm as the fire blazing in the hearth. The pie menu is vast and all home made to order, so be prepared to wait for it to be cooked - it is more than worth the wait - numerous, very different options .You can have a small pie if you don't think you can manage the large one but if you don't fancy a pie, there are other lovely choices on the menu. Advised to ring to book a table to avoid disappointment. We will certainly be back with the aim of trying each and every variety of pie on the menu!!!!

Wow! This pub offers pie meals and believe it or not there were 33 types of pie on the menu when we went. The pies are simply huge! I had a pulled beef with caramelised onion and horseradish flavoured pie but there are traditional flavours such as steak and ale for the traditionalist. The pie menu changes occasionally. All pies are made to order so be prepared to wait for your meal. The wait is well worth the outcome. Not an expensive meal out either. The pub itself is difficult to find and very basically kitted out.

What a real surprise! Our Friday night for a pint and a pudding, turned into, let's try a pie. We were recommended by a friend to go and see for ourselves, well, outstanding, marvellous, just amazing taste. Look at the pictures, absolutely cramped packed with filling and the pastry so firm but not hard like most pies. There must have been over 20 to choose from. My friend had the Special and I had the Friesen. with half and half, peas and a jug of onion gravy. This was served with a huge smile from the waitress, lovely girls behind the bar too. The heading is about Kat, the lovely barmaid who made us very welcome, as did everyone in this very small pub,but very busy. The dog, puppy, is an obvious addition to the pub and was a talking point. These pies were so good that I can confidently say the BEST ever tasted. So much so that my friend had no room left for a pudding and I asked if there was a possibility of just having a small one to say that I had one. No trouble at all. Everybody so friendly, a real pleasant change to the normal drinking pub. The only draws back was they didn't serve none alcoholic cider. Kopperberg, for examples. Becks Blue is awful. But we went for the pies. Next time we are going to ask for the small ones then have room for a large pudding. Go and see for yourselves, you'll be going back for weeks trying all the pies.

During our holiday in the area we saw this pub on google maps and so emailed to book a table. We arrived and ordered our drinks. We were served by Lucy and she was so friendly and chatty with me and my children. We were shown to our table and told about the extensive choice of pies on offer. We ordered 4 pies and a scampi for a child. I ordered mash with mine and was later informed no mash was available so opted for chips, no problem. Lucy allowed my son to have garden and mushy peas with his scampi and I chose carrots. The pies arrived and we were not disappointed, they were definitely worth the wait. Lucy brought us a huge boat of onion gravy to go with our pies. You can choose a smaller pie if you cannot face the big ones and believe me they're huge. We all really enjoyed our meals and wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend this establishment to others. We're so glad we found this hidden gem. Sadly we had no room for dessert and I suspect many people don't. We'd like to thank Lucy and her team for making us feel so welcome and for the delicious home cooked food and beer.

That may be but it didn't affect all the parties' food only one person, so we felt that was a little unfair on the pub. After they left they returned after about 10 minutes disturbing our meal looking under our table for something they left behind. We never saw anything, the staff cleared the table and no other customers sat there after they left, so perhaps the item was never left behind after all.

Me and some of my work colleagues took out the patients we look after to have a special meal for one of their birthdays. We called ahead letting them know we were coming and asked if it was alright and if we could order special requirements. They were completely understanding!! At the meal the staff were nothing but kind and friendly and made conversation with all of us. They brought out a complimentary ice cream for the birthday girl and we all sang together. We had a laugh with them and bought them a drink for being so kind to a group that is usually quite hard to take out!! I would always recommend this place to friends, family, colleagues and to my boss so we could take them out again. Also the chef/manager/owner was an absolute delight. She came out and thanked us for coming and hugged everyone goodbye. They couldn’t stop talking about the new friends they made there for a week. Thank you to all the staff and locals for putting up with us.

This was my second visit to this pub. My first being last year as we had it recommended by a friend. There were 9 members to our party. We were a little apprehensive as the exterior didn’t look the most welcoming. They reluctantly said they could accommodate us so we stayed and ordered. The food took over an hour to arrive which as you can imagine was frustrating with 5 children. Our meals finally arrived and a child’s chicken goujon meal had a bone in it.

Our first visit last night after hearing nothing but good things about the place. Quirky old school pub made a nice change from the usual franchise type of pub we usually eat at. We arrived at the same time as a party of 9 that had pre ordered their food so we had to wait our turn. This was no issue at all as the waitress explained what was happening and was very apologetic. The food was amazing but be warned that the pies are HUGE. None of us finished them so no room for pudding - next time we will ask for a small one. Massive selection of pie flavours. I had scampi and it was crispy and golden with proper chips and peas. Overall a great experience with lovely food and friendly staff.

We visited this pub as it was dog friendly (we were on holiday so couldn't leave them). The menu is typical of a country pub with one exception, their vast pie menu. After each of us all ordering a different flavour pie, we waited quite a while as they were freshly cooked. This was obvious as we watched the Guinness being poured behind the bar as ingredients for the Irish pie that was on order. It was worth every minute of the wait, they were all delicious. They were served with peas and onion gravy. The staff were very friendly and the locals were all equally as friendly. Looking forward to our next visit

Visited this excellent establishment with friends who’d travelled over from Leeds having heard of the quality of the food. We seated in the bar area whilst we perused the extensive menu sampling the fine guest beers. We opted for the rabbit pie,Irish pie steak and ale pie and finally a steak and black pudding all accompanied by chips and garden peas. Upon our meals being served they were a sight for sore eyes, the pies being of a large proportion chips well done and peas succulent. The taste of the fillings within the pies was all agreed by our friends and us to be of the highest quality and the shortcrust pastry was to die for. I’ve got to say the owner has got the service to a high standard and that if her food and cannot recommend this please b highly enough it’s the best within the area and we will definitely be returning one day soon.

I had ox cheek pie and it was the first time I’ve eaten ox cheek but it certainly won’t be the last as it was gorgeous, the meat was melt in the mouth! Yes it was quite a wait but we were told beforehand that it was about half an hour as each pie is freshly made and anyway they were definitely worth waiting for! The staff were very friendly and the pub itself, although a bit tired had oodles of character so please don’t do too much of a refurb as it would be a shame to lose its character! For my 26th birthday me and my girlfriend wanted to try somewhere new to eat. My dad recommended the chestnut horse as their “pies are to die for” so that evening we set off and unfortunately we couldn’t get a seat. (We assumed that as it’s a small pub we’d just be able to eat when we turned ). No. This wasn’t the case and sadly got turned away on the bar staffs deepest regret. As walking out the door we had a glance at the pies through the kitchen door and they really didn’t look incredible. If they tasted half as good as they looked we’d be in for a treat. This meant I turned back to the young man behind the bat and made a reservation for the following Sunday. The following Sunday came around and was greeted promptly by the same bar staff who recognised us from last week. Drinks offered as soon as we stepped into the bar area and it was nice to have the option to sit down in the bar area with the superb open fire. Was a very friendly environment with the bar staff engaging and having friendly banter with I presume was the group of locals. Are order was taken and we had a wait of about 45 minutes till our food arrived. We we’re SPOILT for choice with over about 20 pies to chose from. I went for the “welsh cob”(minted lamb pie) and my dad didn’t half sell this pie. It honestly was to die for and certainly worth the wait. it nearly killed me but I managed to get a clean plate but my girlfriend didn’t come close. That’s not because she didn’t enjoy it, it’s just from how big it was. She’s have to order a smaller pie in the future if they do them. We will be back and I recommend anyone reading to visit the chestnut hours but be advised to book. Great staff and different get your value for money.

Fantastic pies that are well worth the wait. Friendly and welcoming. Only on holiday for a week near there but will definitely be going back.

We chose this pub for an important family birthday because we all love a beautifully made pie and the selection on the specials board was too enticing for words. They didn't disappoint. Lucy and her team worked hard to make it a special evening for us and the pies were just amazing, the service friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. The pub was cozy with a two real fires and the atmosphere was lovely. Seriously... Lucy's pie selection has to be seen to be believed, there's over 30 unique recipes, and each one is made individually and is toweringly tall with crisp pastry and tender fillings. The jugs of gravy just kept on coming. The little dining room can accommodate quite a big party. Seriously recommended!

Birthday meal for my Mum and we weren’t disappointed. Two of us had pies (Welsh Cob and Palomino) and other had gammon. Pies were full to the brim of delicious filling and pastry was perfect. Chips were to die for. Will be returning in near future.

The place had been recommended and I'd read reviews on Tripadvisor but things were even better than we anticipated. A proper country pub; good range of well-kept beers and pleasant service. However, the highlight is the food, or more to the point, the pies. A mind boggling variety on offer and really spoilt for choice. Superb filling and crust, choice of mash or chips, mushy or garden and a jug of rich onion gravy. Heaven! Arrive hungry, take your time over a beer or two and await something special. Top notch!

We were staying at Barmston and tried to book a table Saturday evening but they were too busy. So keen to try this country inn after reading the trip advisor reviews we booked for Sunday to take our 2 small dogs...the minute we walked in we were made so very welcome in a pub filled with local clientele.

Went out for dinner at the chestnut horse, oh my god, the food was excellent there was an amazing vibe in the bar with locals and new customers. The staff are all brilliant, the food is excellent and even if you’re not a pie fan the other options all look spectacular! Well worth a visit or a trip out!

This place is a real gem. I love taking the family as we always have exquisite food and excellent service. There is an amazing assortment of pies, but also a good variety of other foods if pie is not for you. On our first visit I had the chicken strips with salad and it was super fresh and perfectly cooked. The portions are not for the faint hearted and if you can’t get through it the staff are more than happy to wrap it for you to take home for later. Believe me you won’t want to leave a thing. It is sooo delicious. On our second visit I had pie and it certainly lived up to the hype. Absolutely gorgeous flavours and cooked to perfection. These pies are made to order so if you don’t want to wait for your FRESH pie to cook then you can just pre-order and it’ll be ready for your arrival. We are more than happy to sit and wait - we’ve all made pie at home so we know how long it takes - we sit and talk (or play cards) - it’s such a nice place to be and the staff are all very welcoming and the service was great both times. I will definitely be revisiting. Fantastic fresh food in a lovely environment- what’s not to love xxx would definitely recommend.

We were made very welcome. We were seated quickly even though it was busy. We had a mixture of pies and meals from the menu. The food is cooked from scratch. It is worth waiting for it. This isn’t a fast food experience. And that’s good. The food is amazing. The portions are very generous. I even ate the salad which surprised my family. We’ll be going regularly!

Having read the reviews and looked at their menu, we thought we would give this pub a try and we are glad we did. The service was excellent and very welcoming. The pie menu was expansive and with a real diverse selection of pies. Yes you wait a while for your food, however this is because everything is cooked and baked to order. This is not your average microwave a meal pub. The pies came out 40 mins or so later, piping hot and full to the brim with filling. The pastry beautifully baked and golden. The only issue was the portion size, massive! We can not recommend this place enough. When we are back in this area, we will definitely be dining again.

We were warned the food would take at least 40 minutes to arrive and in actuality it was probably twice as long but when the pies arrived the wait was forgotten. Lovely crisp pastry and magnificent fillings, and so much of it, they were huge. Great food at a very reasonable price.

One of North Yorkshire gems, so don't be put off by its looks, we nearly were and would have regretted it. The hosts were so welcoming and we felt a great ease with our two young grandchildren. The food was absolutely delicious, the best gammon I have tasted, and the range of freshly made pies was unbelievably. Would thoroughly recommend and we will be returning next time we are in the area.

Visited this pie restaurant as the friends we travelled with had been before. All the staff without exception were extremely friendly, courteous and efficient. The blackboard must have had 40 different pies all freshly made.

Booked this by chance when looking for somewhere on the way to the coast for Fathers Day, criteria being reasonareviews and good beer. We nearly drove past it as the exterior was a little understated and run down looking. However, the young bar staff gave us a lovely warm welcome and we stayed in the bar until our meals were ready. As others have said you do have quite a wait, especially at busy times, so if you have young children come prepared! You will however, be very rewarded as the choice and quality of the pies (and other food) is exceptional, but the portions are huge and real value for money. Would definitely recommend and am looking forward to another visit some day.

Passed this place many times in my hgv but never stopped as it's quite a narrow street and parking is limited. I was passing in my car tonight so stopped to have a gander and got curry and chips to test the water.......chips were spot on, and the curry was amazing, might even be the best I've had from a chippy. Next time I'm passing I'm stopping to have a go at the fish even if I block the road while I grab it 😄

The best fish and chips place on the east coast and in bridlington they do a old pensioners rate for you and the place is exceptionally clean plus they is a disabled toilet on the ground floor so we would recommend this fish and chips place to anyone who wants great quality fish and chips just to let you know the shop only takes cash which for me is fine
