Previously a busy but organised and efficient oasis of wonderful food and respite after a long walk, this beautiful place has changed beyond recognition to enable minimal staff to serve maximum customers with little regard for customer experience. The fantastic take away section has closed and to even just get a coffee you now have to queue in the main cafe. There is no table service so the long queue snakes through the cafe disrupting diners who are trying to enjoy their food. Disposable cutlery and plates are used under the guise of being ‘biodegradable’ but just cheapen the dining experience and contribute to environmental waste. At the end of eating patrons are requested to clean up after themselves and put everything in the bin. This self service model destroys any sense of hospitality, reducing the need for staff and enabling maximum profits for the cafe. What used to be my favourite place to eat is no more. Chesters your preoccupation with profit above customer service has destroyed the wonderful ambience of this place. I’m sorry but we will be having a trial separation from now with minimal chance of reuniting unless transformative change occurs.

Not what it once was unfortunately. We used to love Chester’s, gorgeous food, cakes and friendly service. Didn’t mind queueing for a table during peak season because of the lovely views of Skellith Force. The shop used to have local bits and bobs. But I think now, it’s trying to be something it’s not. As a foodie I like quirky menus but this just felt pretentious. The menu is all spicy, mostly vegan food. There are no waiting on staff and yet they still ask for a tip when you pay. You have to queue at the counter for ages to be served, despite most of the food being already made or quick to make. It took 45 from sitting at a table to getting our food which was a five min 12” stone baked margarita pizza and garlic flatbread with hummus and rocket. Add one can of beer and it totalled a shocking £45 which you have to collect yourself and clear the tables. All this and the place was only half full. The toilets were disgusting, very unclean and were remiss of a child’s potty having been made of off-white yellowing plastic moulding. The shop sold pretentious overpriced items, limited local products in favour of brands like Nkuku which is quite a specific taste and available in many places. Really disappointed with what used to be a jewel in the countryside, I’m sad to say, we won’t be back.

Our B&B landlady said it was now bad but we have been visiting Chester’s for years and it was always a favourite so we gave them the benefit of the doubt! BIG MISTAKE!!! Chester’s has now turned into an awful fast food bakery with terrible burnt coffee and everything in single use throw away containers! Surly staff focused on making a quick buck whilst destroying the environment its customers have come to see!

I haven't been to Chesters for over three years due to Covid, so I was looking forward to visiting again. Very disappointing 😞. The menu is not as good and remains expensive. Your food is served in half of a cardboard takeaway carton whether you're sitting inside or out. Drinks, whether hot or cold, are sold in cardboard cups, and the knife and forks are wooden. Whilst I appreciate that these items are placed in a recycling bin, I can't help but think the costs associated with these could be avoided. There were many people behind the counter serving. Service was slow, and they weren't very warm and welcoming. It wasn't overly busy at the time of my visit. Despite the number of staff you are now asked, or rather a note on the table asking you to clear your table. The tables and chairs and indoor area in general were messy. Asking people to clear their tables is not something you accept in any cafe/restaurant/pub setting. My recommendation would be to go back to proper plates and knives and forks and employ someone to wash pots and clear tables. I will add, though, that despite the above, the food I had was tasty.

Well… We were really looking forward to visiting one of our favourite restaurants in the whole of the Lake District. We have visited multiple times over the past ten years including bringing both of our young children here for amazing vegetarian meals. My phone is full of photographs of the wonderful meals we have eaten. But we have not visited for three years and it’s clear from the reviews on here that there have been major changes. Queuing was often a frustration but rewarded with friendly service, delicious food, generous portions all served on proper plates, mugs and cutlery. This revised approach didn’t inspire us with confidence tbh, and the reviews were not inspiring. It sounded horrible… However we did re-visit, we’ve always loved the food and the shop. And the shop is still great, and the food is still awesome. But there were changes, there’s a lot less tables, and yes, there are disposable plates, cups and cutlery. The wooden cutlery is not great and we struggled to cut up some food with it. We visited on a wet first Monday of the Easter holidays. The experience was passable, it wasn’t too dirty or messy, but it was quiet. We didn’t have to queue… We both dreaded to think what it might be like on a busy weekend or in the height of holiday season. And unfortunately the change in approach had meant a change in the food. We loved the big choice of salads, they were always exciting, inspired and full of interesting flavour combinations, sadly now gone, presumably permanently, probably not practical on paper trays…. I think that was our biggest loss. We don’t understand why it is felt that generating tons and tons of unnecessary recycling from using disposable plates and cutlery is about. That is muddled up thinking of the worst kind. I suspect driven by reduction in staff costs for washing up, but beyond who wants to eat off of paper plates?! It’s not a chip van is it… Good luck with the new business model, I guess for a while return visitors will keep you ticking over, as well as first time visitors who expect nothing else. But as one of the other reviewers writes, words gets around. It certainly has for us. We hope you re-visit this approach, then we can look forward to returning in the future.

Chester's by the river has deteriorated with each visit. No table service, just queues akin to a school canteen. Lack of menus at the queue's start leaves diners uninformed. Wooden cutlery imparts an unpleasant taste. The premises are marred by dirty floors. Despite the hefty price tag—£30 for two drinks, noodles, and a flatbread—the food, while decent, lacks distinction. It's disheartening to witness the decline of what was once a cherished spot.

We were recommended Chester’s by a friend as we advised we would be walking in the area. Location is great and I imagine in the summer it will be lovely to sit outside. First of all be aware it’s a vegan restaurant we hadn’t realised but wasn’t a problem as we went for coffee and cakes. Everything is served in disposable cups/bags etc … it really spoils the experience. You also have to dispose of all your rubbish yourself. The price does not reflect it’s essentially a takeaway. Tables were really dirty and didn’t observe any staff cleaning. Cakes were lovely - coffee wasn’t pleasant made worse by a paper cup !! Surely if you are eating in you could have a plate & cup ?!

Cakes look delicious, but extremely difficult to eat from a paper napkin as they are so soggy! The coffee was a big disappointment, used to get a good flat white in here, but it was weak and milky. I'm sure a lot of places are now putting only one shot in flat whites as a cost cutting exercise. Expensive!

Used to be a favourite. In fact named one of our dogs Chester 19 years ago due to this place….not any more. Really disappointing unfriendly service, very blunt answers on the desk. Had the Makhani which was basically inedible and left most of it. £20 for a lunch, can of coke and a cake. Disposed of our own plates / cutlery in the overflowing bins which is great that it’s recycled but SO MUCH of it. Used to have a lovely vibe here but now feels like a fast food place. Really disappointed and sadly won’t be returning unless some big changes are made.

Really disappointed with the change at Chesters. It’s a very popular spot and so really busy, which is great for them, but I don’t like the change from formal to informal, the removal of the lovely salad bar to mostly bakery and the cardboard cups, plates etc. I appreciate I no longer represent their target audience and I wish them all the best but the change is not for me. Chesters is such a lovely cafe that serves incredibly vegan food (note this place also serves vegeterian cheese and milk) The food is delicious with huge portion sizes. If you're in The Lakes and you're looking for some hearty vegan food, this place will not disappoint. I have visited a few times now and each dish I have tried (pizza, vegan sausage roll, blackcurrant scone, various cakes) was truly delicious. Friendly staff and a scenic location, however it's always overrun with children and families with prams so I always order to go as it can get too loud and cramped. I was told by one member of staff that everything was vegan, but when ordering a few things such as the margherita pizza or the scone with jam and butter, I had to specify vegan cheese/butter otherwise I would have been given dairy, so this is something to note if you are vegan.

So disappointing Chesters…….where has it gone wrong? It was a grim day outside which never helps, makes everything feel a little less sparkling, but……..nobody cleaning up or wiping in the quite considerable time we were there…clear your own tables and dispose of the rather pathetic paper plates and cutlery that is now in use. I’m sorry but the whole place just had a grubby unwashed Greenham Common feel to it. Food was ok, but I dont want to eat on sticky dirty tables. I fully agree with all of the comments made by "992911 Resting on Laurels..." earlier this week. The big redeeming feature and why we will probably return is the choice and quality of the cakes. Really enjoyed the mincemeat tart topped with marzipan. Hopefully, the owners will read the run of poor views and work out a plan B that meets both their environmental objectivities and the desire of customers for a cleaner establishment with a less DIY approach.

This is sad to have to write. Chesters used to be special, a very metropolitan experience in the heart of the Lakes, fabulous Ottolenghi style food with that sense of largesse as you walked in, from huge platters of salads on display, and sharing plates on the menu, with a gift shop stuffed with unusual books and gifts that you can't easily find anywhere else. I would have recommended it to anybody. It was always busy, with rather fraught table service of the food, but the food was served on plates with proper knives and forks. HOWEVER......yesterday's visit was a pretty dismal experience. Paper plates, cups, useless little bamboo knives and forks that are almost functionless. All this paper may be recyclable but it's arguable that the quantity of it is more of a burden on the environment than the power needed to operate a dishwasher. The menu is still Ottolenghi style, but the food was lukewarm, with a messy cramped eating area, reduced terrace seating...the shop still looks smart and stylish but the stock is very pared down and there are lots of Japanese ceramics and paper goods but very few of those unusual vegetarian and vegan cook books, and the whole experience was cheap and trashy - metro food but felt more like eating street food. This was a destination eatery for me before, but now I will not go out of my way to go there again. There are better places to eat good food with your hands or wooden cutlery - Ambleside has some good chippies and sit down cafes with hot food, proper cutlery, crockery, and clean tables.

When we arrived we parked by the river and while the car park is small (maybe 10 cars max) there is a larger overflow car park if you take the lane to the left of the Skelwith Hotel. We decided to go for their overnight oats and was amazed by them, mine were topped with strawberry, raspberry, coconut shavings and passion fruit and as an ex chef of best part of a decade, I was taken back by the balance of flavours. If you have ever tasted a meal and on that first bite, had to stop and go to yourself "Ohh my..." then you know what I'm talking about. The breakfast menu was very good, wide selection of teas and coffees, cakes and pastries. I would arrive early as we left at 11 and was already a que to be seated. Going to Chester’s was always one of the treats of trip to the Lakes. Not any longer. Couldn’t understand why we could park with ease - and then went in. All drinks and food in paper cups or bags. Cheap wooden cutlery. Self clear -...

Sat outside for tea and cake today (marmalade and ginger cake). Always worth a visit, busy but managed to get a table. Thanks.

Seems a really pleasant place, the food was nice. Shame about one member of staff. He had a really unpleasant, hostile attitude towards visitors and apparently couldn’t be bothered to join the others in uniform wearing a t-shirt and open toed sandals instead which another customer thought was unhygienic. Another set a good example and was helpful and friendly. Hopefully they can lose this guy before he drives away business. They served everyone’s food in takeaway packaging even if you asked to sit in, which seemed needlessly wasteful.

Used to be really good before Covid but now it’s gone vegan and all the cakes are bone dry. The pizza looked alright but a lot of people around me in the cafe were also talking about how it had gone downhill. If you’re just coming for drinks it’s not bad but stay away from the food.

Being a local we’ve been here loads over the years. But wow it’s gone down hill. All eco friendly, all vegan! No menus, just a board behind the till. Massive selection of cakes but they were not great. Over all, massive let down. Won’t be...

Current ownership need to re-think their customer service. All food and drink is served in cardboard/ plastic, not actual crockery as it should be for any cafe. Icing on the cake is you are now asked to clean you’re own table when you leave taking all rubbish into the car park and separating it into multiple bins. I’ve been visiting for the last 20 year, the one positive is that the cakes remain amazing and location is perfect. Hopefully the current management will realise that this is not suitable customer service for any business in hospitality. Looking forward to customer service returning.

A great place to have a drink mid walk. Sat outside and had coffee and a HUGE freshly cooked scone. Only issue was the number of wasps flying around when we tried to put the jam on the scone! A very popular lication

Have been to Chester’s for tea and cakes over many years, and always enjoyed it. But they seem to have lost the plot. Drinks served in cardboard cups. Cake given to you in a paper bag. When you’ve finished, you’re expected to clear up yourself.

Chesters tripadvisor ratings have taken a hit since the beginning of the pandemic. And I got why to begin with. The range became more limited and the food being served in takeaway bags rather than on plates seemed to annoy people. Though one thing no-one...
