I use chessel cafe quite often as I think it has a nice feeling about the place very clean, friendly staff and nice ambience however i think the coffee is way overpriced as you only get a small pottery cup pour that into a normal cup and it wouldn't even be half full also had a toasted teacake very small and asked for some cheese to go with it was charged £1.50 for two small slices of cheese just think it's very overpriced

We travelled from Guildford and America to the island for a short break! Have been told it’s a friendly and nice place to have lunch. The signage was poor when we looking for a parking space, the actual parking space is located on the other end of the building, on a different road! We mistakenly driven in and realised the car park is elsewhere. When trying to reverse out, the place was so narrow and one of the ground staff told us that we did a bad job and reversed on the path! We apologise and tried to get to the car park! The car park is next to a field, the signage was poorly displayed and it was full. We had no choice but to abandon the plan to visit. I would not recommend this place for visit. It’s not a friendly place, definitely not parking friendly.

Two oat flat whites ordered, £3.95 each according to all advertised pricing. Bill came with 75p added to each for the oat milk. When challenged this was removed but really poor service to a) not stating this pricing b) 75p to have alternative is just ripping people off when most places now do not charge and c) to be told that most places now charged due to price rises, well they don’t and customers should not have to put up with being told this after rightly highlighting that prices aren’t being advertised correctly. Nice to see that customers here that prefer milk alternatives are treated this way! All very poor, unlikely to be back.

We didn’t know what the menu looked like before arriving as I couldn’t find one online and once there, we opted for a chicken, bacon & lettuce wrap and fish finger sandwich, both of which were enjoyable. The cakes were really lovely as well. It was nice that there was a call/pay button on the outside tables so we didn’t even have to move to order. The lady who served us displayed exceptional customer service.

Our only reason for visiting was for one of the legendary cream teas we had had on previous visits to the Isle of Wight. Hugely disappointed to find they were no longer doing them and almost felt told off for asking if they still did I them. A curt ‘no’ was the response! Despite this being a must visit on every trip to the island, I will not be returning or visiting on any future trips. 😢😢

Having lived in the west Wight for over 20 years and driven past here many times today gave me the opportunity to visit. Wonderful service, the staff seem genuinely happy to see and greet us. The food was superb, freshly cooked and the kitchen staff obviously take pride in what they produce and its presentation. The waiting staff were friendly and approachable and very polite. What a treat this place is.

Not an ideal visit. The old car park has been abolished and you now have to park further away in a car park nearer the road. The other small [closer] parking area was full. The walk to the cafe' was too far. We have been going here for some years but we won't be going back again. We did not visit, turned around and found another more convenient local establishment instead.

We were looking for a tea stop and had seen the sign for “Pottery”, so passed it on way to Freshwater Bay (silly mistake). Turned around as nothing there and headed back to the “brown sign”. SO GLAD WE DID. Forget pottery, think more somewhere to enjoy freshly prepared food in beautiful surroundings. We were a party of 4 wrinklies and two dogs. We initially sat outside and pressed the button on the table for service. 4 teas (it’s 15:20 and they close at 16:00), do you have cake? Come inside and see our selection the nice young lady said. DO THEY HAVE CAKE?? Name a cake, any cake, have a slice. Saw the size of the inside, some very large sofa’s suitable for LARGE bottoms, “Do you allow dogs in?” Then I saw they have Fred, the in house hoover dog. YES THEY ARE DOG FRIENDLY. In we sat, right by the log burner (no, not light as 20c outside). Can’t rate the quality of the “home made” cakes highly enough, the friendliness of the staff, spotless cleanliness of everywhere, highly enough. I can’t remember how much I paid, but was not upset AND able to pay by Amex. If touring the Isle of Wight, try it, you won’t be dissapointed

Visited this summer, not been for 2yrs due to a family emergency last year. We were very disappointed to find the cafe business has changed hands. Not nearly as charming as it used to be, much more canteen style in delivery, less choice, fewer types of lovely cakes etc, but plenty of processed foods. The ‘bottomless’ cream teas (used to be served in Chessell pottery plates) are now gone and replaced with the usual tiny plastic pots of mass produced clotted cream and jam. Very boring atmosphere and even the pottery classes are now acrylic rubbish. Such a disappointment. This used to be a destination for our holidays on the IOW. We will not be visiting again. BUT! This review is based on past experiences with a different ownership, as a fairly pleasant break for lunch i’m sure you can do much worse. It’s just not up to its usual nostalgic scratch. I guess everything changes. Not always for the best though.

My boss comes here with his family as he really enjoys his lunch here. Because of this he bought his workers here for breakfast. Unfortunately the breakfast didn't live up to our expectations. The sausages were dry and tasteless the baked beans were cold, the bacon was very fatty and the cherry tomatoes were to carry dryer in butter. The breakfast was very pricey for what we got and this did not include a drink. Which is usually the normal. All in all we played far to much for what we got. After asking for a refill coffee because our coffee was cold before our breakfast was bought out we were very rudly told no. It is all very well this time of year when there is plenty of visitors around but don't forget who keeps you going when the visitors all go home. The locals.

We went there out of interest in the original Chessell pottery, many examples of which are collectible and can be seen online. However since a recent change of ownership the ceramics now come from other sources and fall into the novelty category, seeming to exist mainly for children to paint. The café did reasonable sandwiches but inexplicably had no beer in the middle of a bank holiday weekend. Two sandwiches and two (soft) drinks cost nearly £20. Never again.

We are on holiday on the Isle of Wight with our friends who live there and mid afternoon decided to try the Pottery Cafe. Our friends had been several times before, but not this year. The whole place has changed layout and unfortunately not for the better. The shop is now a shadow of its former self with very little on sale. We felt so sorry for the lovely girl that works in there. She was so pleasant and attentive but there was nothing that we could see that was worth buying. We went into the cafe which is now larger than before apparently. Oh dear! We know that they had only just re-opened this week, but it was a farce. As there were 4 of us we ordered two cream teas and an extra pot of tea for two. Total confusion! No fruit scones left so 3 plain scones and 1 lemon and poppyseed scone. The scones were heavy but not that fresh. There was 1 small pot of jam, and the cream had been refrigerated for so long that it would not spread. The solution by the staff was to tip the cream onto a plate and give us a spoon to mash it with ! The cream went to the consistency of thick milk and trying to distribute on four not fresh scones with a miserly scraping of jam destroyed any pleasure in the event. I did feel sympathy for the one lad behind the counter as he was clearly out of his depth I think due to lack of training by management. Our friends could not believe how quickly a good business could fall so far down and certainly in my eyes it is a question of when and not if. Poor show.

We came to Chessel for a cream tea, there is a choice of savoury or traditional with plain, fruit or cherry almond scones, I had the cherry almond scones, if you don't have enough jam or cream you can ask for more which we did have to do. The only let down is the pot of tea, it's a large pot but has a one cup tea bag in it, so the tea is very week, if the tea was better this would be the best place on the island for a cream tea.

We picked our items to paint and were given a demonstration on the best way to paint our pottery. As my daughter is a teenager we spent a few hours personalizing and perfecting our creations. We were not rushed at all and staff were on hand for any help needed. I was so pleased with my creation and looked forward to picking up the finished products. We were not disappointed with the final products. Definitely worth a visit.

The cream tea is presented on pretty pottery, we had cherry scones which are baked on the premises and are delicious, plenty of tea in the pot and lovely fresh cream. It made a wet and windy day into a delight.

I have never been before but heard fantastic reviews!! went with 3 friends who insisted i made a visit. i was not dissapointed and I must say the scones were enormous!! 4 different types too... so big that i ran out of jam and cream after just eating one-- Im disappointed to read on another review here now after the visit that you can apparently ask for more jam, cream AND tea refill???!! "as much as you want" quote unquote on review ? why doesn't anyone politely tell you that when you are ordering? i struggled with trying to make my jam and cream cover 2 scones and ate the second one virtually dry.....i must apologise as perhaps there was a sign up somewhere but I didn't see it as I was too busy looking around at all their lovely goodies! of which there is plenty- so do bring extra money with you. I questioned why my bill was a bit more than the advertised price- and was told because I had ordered earl grey with my afternoon tea and that was a specialist tea-- again...please communicate-- nothing was said when I placed the order?!!! sorry- I used to be in customer service, small things like talking to customers make a big difference. I loved the plates with strawberry pattern on them that we ate from but was told that is not for sale to the public, only for use in the café...but I guess I could always return and try to paint my own in their pottery section which looks great fun to do! my friend bought a mug in the shop with hearts on and enquired about matching teapot-- however when she discovered the price tag of approx. £50 she changed her mind. iv heard the place is up for sale- do hope the new owners will keep the quality this oozes of- I hear there is music too on sundays- how lovely- nice outside seating too. I will return with family.

Having cycled and battled the hills around the West side of the Isle of Wight my wife and I wanted a break and rest our posteria's.We pulled in to the Chessell Pottery Barns and leant the bikes up against an oak tree in the secluded gardens containing picnic tables and chairs. We settled for coffee and cake and were pleasently surprised when the freshly made lattes arrived with a lovely fresh piece of ginger, date and apple cake. All priced well and served up quickly we were only too soon back on the bikes and climbing more hills. We will be burning more calories on the bikes this week to pop back for the cream tea, they looked delicious!

I met a friend for lunch and also took along my five month old daughter. We found a large table in the garden which had an umbrella which provided plenty of shade for the baby but also allowed us to enjoy the warm sunshine too. I ordered an egg and cress roll and my friend had ham and horseradish mustard. The food arrived fairly promptly and the rolls were served with some plain crisps and a salad garnish (rocket leaves and two plum cherry tomatoes - one red and one yellow). The granary rolls were delicious and fillings were fresh and tasty. It would have been nice to have a few more tomatoes as they were so good - local no doubt. We had tap water with our lunch which was served from a jug on the counter with lemon/lime in it.After lunch we went to look at the great selection of cakes and decided to order a cream tea which we shared. It was delicious, two large fruit scones with jam and lots of delicious clotted cream. It came with tea which had free refills.Living locally, we will definitely be back. Next time we're planning to have the savoury cream tea as we saw someone else having it and it looked great.I have never had a bad experience at Chessell. It is a lovely place to visit even if you're not planning to do any pottery painting. The gift shop is well worth a visit too.

We visited with 4 adults, 1 toddler and 2 small dogs. The food was excellent - well presented, good quality and great service. We ate out in the gardens which were very picturesque, and dog friendly. Our toddler also spent time painting pottery, and had a great time - very reasonably priced, very helpful staff.Well worth a visit!

My partner and I went as a cute day trip and ended up spending over 3 hours painting! We had two items each to paint and it ended up coming to around £70 for the four things and the studio time (per person) it's very expensive!! They charge extra to send home so make sure you do it early in your holidays so you can collect them!Very informative tutorials at the beginning, there's a range of colours and tools to use and it's a lovely quiet space with the radio on to create a nice atmosphere. Lots of children but still calm and relaxing. We both really enjoyed our visit and then we got coffee and cake after! Lovely cakes - try the apple date and cinnamon one. - sounds odd but it was INCREDIBLE

The capuccino was beautifully presented by a friendly waitress and the decaf tea was served in a large pot. The carrot cake was moist and more-ish as was the flapjack. Good value for money. There were tables outside in the courtyard or inside and there were fresh flowers on the table. A great place to chat with a friend.

This place is famous for its views across the Solent, but only in the summer. In the winter the windows are always steamed up giving you near to no visibility outside. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good and average prices for the area. Drinks were more expensive than the Seaview Hotel just around the corner. +£1 per drink on gin & tonic. It was November on a Friday evening and all tables were reserved. We did sit at one of their best tables for our drink ‘Captain Ted’s Table’ and it was wobbly as hell. Felt like it was going to give way at any time. Come on this is an easy fix.

Nice busy cafe, lots going on with a lot of choice to make your own baguette. Popular with the locals for lunch who fancy an upgrade from a morrisons meal deal.

We have been here many times over the years and looked forward to our visit again this year. What a disappointment. We had a cream tea which consisted of a pot of tea, 2 scones, butter, cream and jam. The jam and cream pots were half the size they used to be and the butter was barely there, adequate enough for one scone but certainly not two. The jug of milk supplied did not have enough milk for one cup of tea and we had to ask for extra. I do not drink tea and asked for my tea to be substituted with coffee, big mistake, it was undrinkable. Went we went to pay we were told 'cash only' and I was lucky to find some cash in the bottom of my bag. This should be made clear when you enter and before you order as a lot of people do not carry cash. Our experience was so different to every other visit we wondered if there were 'new owners' but overheard the owner telling other visitors that she had been there 17 years. Sadly will not be returning.

Remember coming to this pub with my family when I was ten so had to come back 40 odd years later. Disappointed the coffin by the door was gone 😂 but it was a real highlight of our trip. Our dogs were welcomed and fussed over and the food at lunch was amazing, so tasty. Really friendly staff and all the facilities were spotless. Fantastic views over the garden too. A lovely trip down memory lane
